It's about time a great game to the PS2. Yes, I know there have been some good games coming in slowly but this is one that want have you saying.."It's over....just like that." Ex. Onimusha and ZOE. Both pretty good, both pretty short. Okay, on to Red Faction.

First thing I noticed.... well the graphics weren't what I was expecting. I was expecting Half-Life PC. Anyway, once you get into this game and explore a little, you come to find the graphics to be very well done, especially the textures. If you have the game be sure to look down at the ground..close up. Don't mistake me..this isn't Metal Gear Solid 2. But that's okay because a game like this you need depth and gameplay. Both of those make a bigger hole in the wall than you can even think of blating. Yes, the Geo-Mod is very, very cool.

Depth.... you actually feel part of this world. It's a movie and you're the lead role. Plus some 60 levels. This game is huge and their is always something new to try. Instead of just shooting enemies, get into vehicles to run em' down. Hell, take over a gun turret and mow 'em down. Blast a hole in the bridge by an unsuspecting guard and watch him fall. The environment is very interactive. The bottom line.....if you want a game you can spend time with, explore and not get bored of....Buy Red Faction.

Onto gameplay...Okay, this is where I thought it would fall apart. Me, I'm used to having a mouse and keyboard to be my eyes and feet. Okay, can't do that here unless the usb keyboard and mouse work...haven't heard. But that's okay, The control is tight and the game moves at constant frame-rate. The load times are short and the save times are shorter. The games' multiplayer feature is good if you want to shoot up on some friends or some bots. Though, this is designed to be a single player game...and if you're like me....that's the one you'll be playing.

Alright that's about it. RED FACTION is a great all-around game. No other game out there now comes close. So proud PS 2 owners....go do yourself a favor. Pick this one up and join the revolution.

Oh, yeah...

When I first played this game I thought it would be another of those FPS who have great ideas, but really stink. I was so surprised. Everything looks realistic. The guns are sweet, the graphics are great, the sound is awsome, and, the best part, you can blow right through walls. Don't have a keycard? Just blast a hole in the wall and you have just done the soon-to-be-famous technique, wall-be-gone! You can destroy bridges, pilot vehicals, and snipe victoms from a distance. Is there a big tank coming your way? Just pop a hole in the ground and down it goes! This is defenitly a must buy.

So, I picked it a couple of hours ago and I've been playing it ever since. The story is well done and I like the fact that you can't just shoot everything that moves, as some of the characters are friendly members of the Red Faction. Also, the ability to drive vehicles is a nice touch, although I've only hopped into a couple at this point.

I'd spoken with the [gentleman] at ebworld and he said that, when playing the demo, he'd also experienced the framerate drop that others had mentioned-- which was the most negative thing that I'd heard about this title and I was a little worried about it. Fortunately, I have yet to detect a drop, although there's not been more than 4 or 5 characters on screen at any given time and I haven't done the 2 player thing with multiple bots yet. Sure, it's no Timekillers, but the framerate was pretty much the only thing that was great about Timekillers. In fact, Eidos hyped the game with the 60 fps tip, so it should have performed at that rate.

So it's onto the aspect of this game that's supposed to set it apart from all others- The Geo-Mod or Geometrical Modification component. And I have to say, it really is sweet and I'd bet that many FPS's will follow Violition's lead in the future. It's a very cool thing to send a rocket into the ceiling above your enemies and watch the rocks rain down and put an end to them. The flipside of this is that you can waste a whole lot of time drilling through a wall in the vehicle only to end up no where, and then have to turn around. But, I suppose that's the price you pay if you don't want to be confined by standard video game logic-- and I think it's worth it.

Overall I'd say the graphics are decent, but I have to admit I was hoping for a little more-- at times the textures and detail are lacking, but the gameplay and Violition's other attempts to bring new elements to the FPS make up for it.

Bottom Line-- If you like most FPS's you should definitely pick this up, as it does introduce new elements to the genre and it is a lot of fun.

Not Quite a Killer App... But Close

Now THIS is more like it. PS2 games of late have been plagued by the curse of brevity. After a string of INCREDIBLY short games, such as Onimusha, ZOE, Crazy Taxi, and Starfigher, PS2 owners finally have a reason to use their memory cards. Red Faction goes a long way towards remedying the "beaten in one sitting" trend with a long storyline full of twists, turns, and a huge variety of environments to explore. What starts out as a revolution in the mines of mars eventually sees you raiding Ultor's corporate offices, piloting submarines, fighting HUGE mutant worms, sneaking aboard a space ship, and blowing up a huge space-station. And that's not even the game's brutal, down in the trenches, finale! Red Faction is a long game and, just when you think it's going to end, you're surprised by yet another twist in the plot. It's also a fun game and, with the inclusion of a variety of vehicles and the "Geo-Mod" technology, a fairly innovative one.

Speaking of which, a lot has been made about the Geo Mod technology. While it is very rewarding to blow the bridge out of personel transports and take out guard towers at their foundations, Red Faction hardly capitalizes the possibilities of being able to alter the environment.

The "revolution" has also been a major tag line for this game. While that is all well and good for the storyline, don't expect any of the other members of Red Faction to help you (ala the martians in "Perfect Dark"). Your fellow rebels are really nothing more than cannon fodder, pretty much dying without fail seconds after you encounter them. While this isn't a huge problem, a huge battle between your fellow proletarian miners and the brutal security force would have been very cool and was, in fact, expected based on the previews.

The multi-player game is also somewhat disappointing, but that's okay. Red Faction replaces the pointlessness of FPS's like Time Splitters with a fairly entertaining story that actually rewards you for continuing on. It's certainly no Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, but it's definately a start for shooters on the PS2.

a MUST HAVE for anyone with a ps2

To start off this is one of the best console fps i've ever played. if you like perfect dark, medal of honor, or anything else in the genre then there's no way you won't like this.

To start off the environments, in this case a mine on mars, are beuatifully done. In the mines there is very little light, and the yells of the guards echoe as the come after you. the sound is done perfectly, to the hiss of rockets flying to the crackle as your stepping on glass.

one of the best features the geo mod technology, is one of the many things that makes this game awesome. if you shot rockets they make holes in walls, pillars, and the floor or ceiling instead of just exploding making no damage as in quake etc. also you can bypass certain "broken" doors by blowing holes around them. it's great seeing the damage of a huge boss fight on the environment.

another cool feature is there are no real "levels" in this game, you can save at any time in during the game and it's never really split up into parts, only short load times between certain areas give some seperation.

overall this is one of the best games avialable now for ps2, i would recommend it to anyone. worth the 50 bucks

the best fps ever

Red Faction is the best first person shooter on PS2 and probably the best one ever. Red Faction combines gameplay from two other great first person shooters, Half-Life and Goldeneye 007. Red Faction is far supirior to both of these thouigh. For starters Red Faction uses Geo-Mod Technology. For example if you shoot a wall wiht a rocket launcher it will create a big crater or vlast a hole through the wall. If you can't hit a sniper in a tower, no probelem, just blow the wall down. Or shoot a hole into a pipe and watch the steam come poring out. The aresnol is great. There are 15 weapons, most of which have as second option for fireing. For exapmle with the flamethrower you can either blast a long flame or chuck the gas tank attched to the flamethrower and use it as a bomb. Other weapons include a control baton (tazer), riot shield, 12mm pistol, submachine gun, automatic shotgun, assult rifle, sniper rifle, remote charge, grenade, rocket launcher, rail driver, precision rifle, heavy machine gun, and a fusin rocket launcher. For those Metal Gear Solid fans there is one part of the game where there is one part in the game where you go into stealth mode and have used a silence pistol and hide the boddies. The game has four different levels of difficulty ranging form easy to impossible. So weather your a hardcore gamer or a just a beginner this game is perfect for you. This game will take longer then a weekend to beat also. In facto it could take you quite a while. You are aloud to save wherever you wish to during the game because there are no levels. The game does have to load sometimes but these loads are qucick and far apart. The preste controls are easty. The left anolog stick moves you foward and back and the right analog stick is used to turn. R1 is the fire button. These controls can be changed quite simily though. But the game does not allow you to use the d-pad to move. The story of the game is set in mine on Mars. You name is Parker, a rebelios miner whi joins up with the reble group, Red Faction. Many of the miners are dying of a plague in the mine and you want to find out why they are dying and why no one is doing anything about it. But be careful this one may go all the way to the top.

The Red Faction Wants YOU!Trust me,you want to join..

Alright. I'm not one for first person shooters, but this baby is worth a look by anyone who does enjoy straight up action. Hell,I played through the demo I received half a dozen times. First off,the Geo-Mod technology is far from a gimmick. Basically, you can blow stuff up good in real time. Remember the rescue scene in the Matrix? That's what the rooms look like after certain battles. Especially rocket launcher duels in multiplayer. While this new technology is nice,it would mean jack if the gameplay wasn't tight. And it sure is. Fantastic weapons, level designs, and fun vehicles to pilot add up to a winner. The multiplayer is a tad thin, but it's still a blast . For those of you who know your copies of Half-Life and Perfect Dark better then you know some of your loved ones and families this bad boy is definitley for you. Just do me a favor, remember to eat and use the facilities OK?

I recently bought Red Faction for the Playstation 2 game console.
RF is definitely one of the best first person shooters I have ever played. You get a huge array of different weapons to shoot the crap out Ultor's gaurds. Movement is easy and simple, however, short and narrow bridges and catwalks will sorely test your paitence. RF's storyline is "exciting". Hey, you're a miner on Mars about to rebel against a major mining facility. The abiity to alter your environment is a sure plus, blasting your way through walls or a group of gaurds can be entertaining. The game constantly progresses throughout the entire story, I think that gives it a sense of realism and makes you feel as though you're not stuck at a level-choose menu. Frequent loads between parts of your mission can be annoying, but its worth it. The graphics are excellent. Real life movement and gun sway are done properly. The best graphical feature in this game is the weapon-reload animation... for once they look real (which is why i didnt like Goldeneye for N64). Red Faction reminds me of Unreal Tournament, Especially in multiplayer against bots. Fast moving, large amounts of munitions and weapons, bloodshed and destruction all around you. The gameplay in both multiplayer and single player is increibly fast.

If you're known to "camp" during games... dont try it here! Campers will almost always find themselves gunned down in their little burrows. The single player missions are lengthy. You start out unarmed and literaly helpless. But within seconds, you've got a riot control baton... soon thereafter a pistol and so on.

RED FACTION WEAPON LIST:

Riot Shield -Protects against batons and pistol rounds
Riot Baton - Used as a taser, or hand-to-hand combat
12mm Pistol - Optional silencer, very accurate.
Submachine Gun - Toggle between 12mm and 5.56mm rounds.
Auto Shotgun - Buckshot or automatic fire.
Assult Rifle - Bursts or full automatic fire.
Flamethrower - Flame or toss canister for fire bomb.
Rocket Launcher - Normal, or "dumb" rockets.
Heavy Machine Gun - Inaccurate fast rate fire, or slow accurate fire.
Fusion Rocket Launcher- 1 round, massive explosion
Remote Charges - Explosive Device
Precision Rifle (my fav) - Scope, or Extremely accurate semi auto
Sniper Rifle - Scope, or manual aim, 6 round clip.
Grenades - BOOM
Rail Driver - 1 shot kill, infared scope (shoot through walls)

The advancement of games now is amazing, it wasnt that long when we were all amazed by pacman and tetris, but by looking at this game you have to feel humble. Red Faction is a truly excellent game that can only compliment its programmers. It out classes Quake, Halflife and many other 1st person shootem up's. There are 20 different levels in one player mode to conquer and a multiplayer mode to keep you and a friend busy for a long time. You can destroy walls, pillars and other objects which have a dramatic outcome on the level of the games as by doing this it can be to your advantage or it can hinder your progress. If you have just bought a Playstation 2 then this is the game for you as it shows off all of the machines potentcial

A good solid FPS, lots of fun!

I don't have a lot of gaming experience and I tend to guage all FPS against "Medal of Honor" which was the greatest game I'd ever played. Red Faction ranks right up there with it. One of the things that jumped out at me immediately was the ability to save at any point in the game without having to complete a mission. (This was first console game I encountered with that feature and I love it! I wish all game designers would do that.) In fact, this game is really a continuous "movie" without true mission levels in the traditional sense.

The game is engaging and addictive and fairly long and complex. (I'm stunned by some reviews that say this game is too short ????). It's hard to put the controller down once you get started. On the easy level it's relatively easy until later into the game, but you can adjust the difficulty setting if you require more of a challenge.

The graphics are great, although the hype over the "geo-mod" is a bit over done. I had a little trouble at first with the controls but with practice that was overcome. I really didn't find too many flaws other than a mission or two where you have to give up your weapons and be "stealthy" (Hey I love shooting things).

This is a good solid game that will provide hours of fun.
