This is without a doubt one of the greatest if not the greatest baseball video game ever. Having played all the others there is nothing like ASB 2003. The game has great detail on a lot of areas that I think make baseball the most unique sport in the world and makes baseball America's national game. The game has minor leaguers that are real players who are really in the big leagues team farm system. I could go on but words don't describe how good this game is. I would just say go out and buy it. It is well worth the money. But a warning this game is really for true fans of the National Past Time.
ALL STAR BASEBALL 2003 is as close to realism as I've Seen

The best baseball game I've ever laid my hands on, but it still has a lot of improving to do. Due to all the work that I think needs to be done.... it only gets 2 stars from me.
For one, game play is difficult. But that's cool. Because that's realistic. Practice. Practice. Practice.
A lot of things have been done well. The players come to the plate, and you can tell who they are by looking at their faces. The movements and throws are very realistic. The atmosphere is sharp. The game keeps track of league leaders and league stats. You have a realistic farm team to work with. Send guys down... bring guys up.
The thing that thrills me the most is the franchise mode. Very cool. I liked playing PC games more than game system games for that very reason in the past... but times change.
Downfalls... AND THERE ARE A LOT!! There are a lot of animation glitches. Outfielders will wait till the last second and then start to run and make an over-the-shoulder catch almost EVERYTIME. When stealing or outfielders throwing people out at bases, the way the tag looks means nothing. The animation is off. Players will tag the ground on the wrong side of the base and still call guys out.
Walks are very rare. I think I've played 35 games and my pitchers maybe have 5 or 6 walks AS A TEAM (note: I just manage).
I play in manager mode, because that's more fun for me. Yet, there is no way to pitch-out or pitch around. I get a two-strike count to somebody like Bonds or Sosa... you pitch around, yet there's no way to control that. The manual says L2 & R2 are pitch out and brush back, respectively. NOPE. They're both brush back pitches and brush backs usually make contact.
There is no way to do instant replay. There's an automatic instant replay after EVERY play (even pop ups), but there's no way to control it. You can only hit a button to skip it.
Finally, and what I think is the most important, is there is no drama in the commentary. You'll crush a long enough to be a homerun down the line that might be.. could be... a homerun, but the computer instantly tells you... foul ball.
Too many baseball games soup up the power numbers and I don't care for that. I'm one of those guys that likes baseball exactly the way it is. This game does that too, but from what I understand, not as bad as others.
Oh, one more thing... the computer changes your lineup without your authorization. You'll set it, start the game and find that the computer has rearrange things and even started other people. This severely pisses me off.
Despite all that, it's still the best baseball game I've seen. There's A LOT of work to be done... but this is definately a step in the right direction.
pretty cool

Yes, the graphics are decent, but the gameplay is awful. The pitching interface is very annoying and hitting is close to impossible. Maybe I'm just not a baseball-video game type person, but I couldn't get past an inning or two without getting bored and frustrated.

The last time I checked, baseball games were supposed to be fun. No, I do not like games like 989's MLB where I win 50-1 every single time, but I don't want a game that's impossible.
All-Star Baseball 2003, though, has made me very frustrated with my PS2. Since Amazon.com is my source for reviews, I will review as they do, listing the pros and cons of ASB 2K3 for the PS2.
PROS:
1. VERY up-to-date rosters.
2. Franchise Mode (but then again, who would play 20 162-game seasons?)
3. Minor leagues
4. Hitters charge the mound and are ejected.
5. Expansion mode (Original)
6. Hall Of Fame Team
CONS:
1. Almost impossible to hit.
2. Very hard to pitch.
3. Although the rosters are up to date, some transactions are on that game that occured after the tragic death of Mike Darr. Why is he on that game?
4. No trades with uneven players.
5. Letter ratings instead of number ratings.
6. Games last over an hour.
7. Did I mention that it is difficult?
Do yourself a favor and go out and buy High Heat 2003. Yes, the rosters are kind of off. Yes, the graphics are not great, but the gameplay is unmatched. If you want a quick, 30-minute head-to-head baseball game, it is your one.
An improvement overlast year but some problems

Allstar baseball 2003 is an improvement over last years title. The graphics are better and the gameplay is good, but some things hit a miss. Such as you have to play a 9 inning game evertime, which takes about 45 minutes. You can not alter the number of inning you want to play making it almost imposible to play a full season unless you have nothing better to do, also you can not play with your created player ion a regular game only in a season or franchise. Allstar baseball 2003 is an imporvement bu fails to reach th pinnacle of baseball gaming.
Very good, but has room for improvement...

Let me start of by saying that this is one of the best baseball games I have ever played. I am not a serious gamer so to speak, but I buy every baseball game that comes out, and I have never seen any game that is as realistic as this one. The expansion mode is great because you can create your own custom team. The only drawback of this feature is that you can't create city team names of your own; you have to choose from the options on the game. So instead of having my Lake Balboa Aliens, I am stuck with my Washington D.C. Fury. Not horrible, but not as good as it could be in my opinion.
The game looks absolutely incredible. I was amazed at how realistic the stadiums and players stances are. For instance, when I play with my beloved Atlanta Braves in Shea Stadium, not only do the fans boo, but you can see planes taking off from JFK. THAT IS DETAIL.
I love the fact that you have farm systems. If you are playing a season with Yankees and Robin Ventura goes down? Hmmmm, do you go after Joe Smo free agent third baseman? Nope...call up Drew Henson. NICE!
Okay, let's get on to what I don't like...afterall, you are reading this review for why you shouldn't buy it...not what you should, right?
There were only two things that really bugged me to start:
1) I created a pitcher and picked him as a free agent. One of his pitches is supposed to be a knuckle ball. The problem is, every time I hit the button to throw the knuckle ball, the game freezes. Well, it took me a couple of times to figure out that was the problem and the pitcher is my closer, so I was getting freezes with 2 down in the bottom of the ninth. NOT FUN.
2) The game play is a bit odd. I am tentative to even call this a con, because once you get used to it, it is fine. But I found it a bit strange to get used to. For the most part the control works the same for every baseball game created in the past 10 years, this one doesn't do that. It incorporates new things. Be prepared to lose quite a few games before you get the hang of it.
One other thing that impressed me was injuries. If you bean a player in the head with a fastball, not only are you going to probably get thrown out of the game, but you are going to hurt him. Badly. So, make sure you mean it.
All in all, I say that Triple Play Baseball 2003 is a great game, probably the best available right now.
Best baseball game I have ever played!

This was a really good game good graphics good sound. The only thing that I didn't really like was it dosen't tell you what the buttons are and it dosent show where the ball is going to be before the pitcher throws it, they show it at the last second. Thats allright though it makes it a little more challenging and I will always like a challenge.
Why can't they make a good baseball game?

This game is much more frustrating than it is fun. The main problem with the game is the batting. You can have the setting on easy or regular. On easy batting you hit the first pitch all the time, so the opposing pitcher throws three or four pitches each inning. On regular batting you are lucky if you can get three hits a game. Another problem is the pitcher's stamina. You can have a starting pitcher with a no hitter in the 5th, but he will be completely out of gas. Relievers can pitch about 1 inning before they are done for. Others have said this is the best baseball game out there, which is not saying much about these games.
There are many great football and hockey games, so why can't they make a half decent baseball game?
