I would give this a 4 1/2. The graphics are good but sometimes the ball looks to land 3 feet to the right of a fielder and he catches it. The expansion mode is awesome. It is hard to steal but once to realize that you have to move extra bases by hitting triangle and the direction button of the base you are on and then the direction button you are going to. There is a lot of homers. About 2 or 3 a game. I've scored about 35% of my runs off of homers. This one of the best games.
FUN, FUN, FUN!

Hey, If you are a first time at sport games and you dont know wat to choose, i recomend strongly, All Star Baseball 2003. The graphics are unbelieveable, believe me, I've played other baseball games for Nintendo 64 and this one blows all the other ones out of the water. If you can only play one sports game out of the year, I strongly recomend All-Star Baseball 2003!
High Heat 2003 blows this away

Let me start out by saying that before you read any further go buy High Heat 2003. All Star 2003 might possibly be the worst, most annoying game I've ever played in my life....and I've played many many baseball games. For starters, there is NO way to shut off the auto instant replay!! And I'm not talking about replays after homers, I'm talking about the stupid replay they show every time a batter hits the ball....whether it's a home run or a ground ball to short. Why wouldn't the game allow you to shut this off?? But that is just an annoyance...the game itself is even more terrible. The pitchers are all the same....Randy Johnson throws as hard as Jeff Innis, which is 110 MPH. You have to start your swing practically as the pitcher is releasing the ball. You have no time to decide if it is a strike or not, not to mention no time to decide what type of pitch it is. Not that it even matters, every pitch comes in at the the same speed, curveballs, sliders, fastballs...makes no difference.
Furthermore, The fielders are so slow in reacting...you're trying to throw the ball as quickly as possible and they do a crow hop on every throw, whether it's from 2nd to first of from deep center to the plate. Quite stupid. I won't go on all day, but I just cannot stress enough that High Heat 2003 is so far superior to this game...please trust me and save your money. High Heat gives you so many options to choose from...you can slow down the pitches, speed up the runners, 5 different skill levels as opposed to three on All star (which are all impossible anyway) Trust me people. I started playing baseball for the nintendo, and I have woven my way through Baseball stars, bases loaded, baseball simulator 2000, ken griffey baseball for N64 and many many others.....High Heat 2003 is THE BEST one yet, all star 2003 stinks. Oh and lastly, there is no umpire in all star 2003...so you never know if a pitch was called a strike or a ball until you look at the score card in the corner. If you strike out looking..the fielders just run off the field...no umpire??? What were the producers of this game thinking?

All Star Baseball 2003 is one of the most overrated baseball game I have ever played. It is almost impossible to hit the ball. And when your in the field and A batter hits a fly ball the camera trys to look real by moving in slowly and if its a line drive it will go past you. On rookie mode the ball comes in so fast its almost impossible to hit the ball. To many strikeouts and too little game play. In the instruction manual it tells you nothing.

ASB03 was the worst baseball game I have ever played. The graphics were alright but the gameplay was horrific. It was almost impossible to hit the ball. This game was so overrated and I think the person who made this game should be fired an thrown out on the street.
Bad, just bad

I am writing this review so that someone won't make the same mistake I made. The graphics are good however the gameplay is flat out horrible. One time I was batting and the other pitcher had just thrown me strike two. Then the count was erased and the same player came up to the plate and the at-bat started over again. Another time there was one out and after I threw to first base for the second out, the inning ended. These glitches make the game completely unrealistic and not fun to play.
Also you are unable to bunt if the pitcher is already in his windup. You must show that you are going to bunt before he throws the ball which doesn't allow you to bunt for a hit. Another glitch is that when fielding the players don't throw the ball as soon as you hit the button. It takes the fielders a couple of seconds to set and then throw the ball. It feels like your not controling the players if they don't throw when you hit the button. Running the bases is also a problem. If you hit the ball to the gap or down the line and you want to go to second base, you can't. Each time the runner rounds first base, goes back to first, and then runs to second. By that time the ball is usually there and you'll be out. Also sometimes the runner just keeps running even though you didn't tell him to. I have been thrown out at the plate many times because the base runner on my team continued to run even though I didn't tell him to. If you like the game of baseball don't get this game because it is a disgrace to the sport. It seems as though Acclaim despirately needed to get this game out for the beginning of the 2002 basbeall season and therefore rushed it a little bit. They didn't take the time to work all the kinks out and as a result the quality of the game suffered.
Best Baseball Game By Far

This game is definitely the best baseball game out there. Franchise Mode, plus an AI that will actually kick your bottom on a consistent basis. I've got a franchise with the Pirates and I've won 3 games while losing 2, with the 2 being lost to respectable teams (Mets, Cubs). As far as glitches go, the only one I've seen is the ball appearing to be out of reach on a fly, but instead being caught. But, the glitches that Jason Hofer described are certainly not common. Personally, I think he just needs to take better care of his Playstation. As far as the game goes, get this game, it beats every other game on the market.

When i first started playing i loved the piching and the fielding. The batting was a different story. It was so hard. The 95 mph fastball was almost to realiztic. I don't recomed this game to people who want to have a lot of home runs or to people who don't watch or play baseball much. Overall i thought it was fun but not fun enough to pay [money].
Greatest game ever!

If you are crazy about baseball like me, then you will just love this game. The gameplay is sweet, with basically no problems, the graphics you ask? Take a look at the screenshots and you'll see why this game has me going wild. The game also features many different modes of play from, career mode( following a player), to franchise mode where you coach, general manage, and play for your favorite team for many fun filled seasons. So why are you reading this?! You should be buying All Star Baseball 2003 right now! SO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's soooo close, but...

i'm a long-time triple play player, they are graphically far and away the best, but pretty shallow, so i was ready for a change. it looked like asb had everything right (franchise with farm systems, challenge points to buy cards to unlock cheats/uniforms/stadiums, throwback uni's), but frustratingly they just miss on so many points. don't get me wrong, the game is fun, the pitcher/batter interface is very realistic and the game is much more intellectually challenging. The batter guesses what pitch is coming, much like in real baseball. but there are so many annoyances like the fact you can not change teams once you start a franchise (you have to play 20 seasons w/ the same team), you can not access cheats from season/franchise mode nor control uniform selection, and you can not access player skill attributes (you only can get an overall grade so there is no way to tell who may be a good pinch hitter or substitute). Another thing is that the collectable cards are not player boosts like in madden, you just collect them for collecting's sake. Also, you can only create 25 players that can not be used for a different season play, so you'd have to create them again if you start a new season unless you're on franchise. the graphics are ok, but far from great. it'll do, i think play-wise it's better than tp baseball, but not the kind of improvement i had hoped for. i will probably buy a better game in the future.
