What a great game. Wow. Graphics for the gears was great, while for the ppl, it was old school. It has a great plot, and some very good fighting in it. It is somewhat like FF7, but a bit more futuristic. This competes with some of the FF games for best one ever made(as you can guess,I'm a hardcore RPG-Squaresoft supporter). It is a great story for the struggle for a planet, and good against evil. Definitely a must-buy.
One of the top 5 RPGs for the Playstation

This is a game for the mechaphiles out there. A very good story line complete with surprises that will keep you on your toes (remember to save frequently and in numerous slots!). Very good 3-D graphics, however, character graphics should have been cleaned up. A great soundtrack rounds up this great RPG and the result is outstanding. There are many elements to this game that can only be found if you search and explore in addition to just playing the game. I find new things everytime I play through it. All in all, a great addition to any PS RPG player's library.
P.S. Hope the motion picture from Square will be coming out next year. A friend of mine works for them here at the Harbor Court location for their Motion Picture Design Studio. I caught glimpse of their works and I must say, it rocks!
It barely Tops FF7, but it's still better!

This is officially the best Rpg ever made. It has everything. But the biggest thing about it was the storyline. It has so many plot twists, and emotional moments. Being able to fight in giant mechs, and buying new parts for them is very unique. You can also pull off killer combos, it's awesome. The graphics are better than FF7, and these are the best polygons i've ever seen on playstation. I know FF8 sounds tempting, but this is better. This should keep you going for about 75 hours, that's if you get all the secrets. This has both CG cinemas, and anime cinemas, it's just so cool. The soundtrack is great also. The whole story is very unpredictable, and will keep you thinking. I thought that some of the bosses were very hard in this, but i'm not too good at rpg's anyway. Don't pass this up, it's the best Game ever, in my opinion. I know it sounds outrageous, but you've gotta try it to see.
My all-out favorite RPG!

The plot of this game is simply stunning. A deep, haunting theme, with many religious overtones, debating the existence of God itself. With the collaboration of all energies to one point near the end, and the unveiling of the Deus Ex Machina, this game is truly stunning. Combining the plot with the superb graphics and addicting music, as well as the likeable personalities of (most) of the characters, this game simply outdoes all. I have played FF6 (3 US), and Xenogears is the 1 AND ONLY game that has been able to oust FF6 from my 'Favorite Game' seat. MUCH better than any of the games of its time, such as FF7 and Parasite Eve, plus Xengears even rivals the masterpiece of FF8!

I would give this game a ten out of five, if I could. This is truly the BEST RPG made, my all-time favorite. I bought it back in 1999, and I have bought it a total of three times now, so I can have a new copy just in case. I have played it nine times now, for a little over 620 hours, and it never bores me. The characters are amazing, the plot grabs and never let go (with the best plot-twists I have ever seen or read), the soundtrack, breathtaking and the battles, just incredibles. This is a long game, specially if you get all the secrets (75 hours aprox., and thats WITHOUT maxing-out all the characters). The characters are very, very cool, everyone has motives to do what they do, almost everyone has some kind of hidden agenda or have something they don't even know they do. Its plot is the best I have ever seen, but be careful-some gamers won't like all the hours you spend reading and reading-but it is neccesary, or this plot could never be what it is. It has religious, political, and social overtones, and a serious and strong story. The soundtrack has 44 amazings songs, featuring various instruments and the geniuses of Yatsunori Mitsuda(composer). The only drawback here is that 44 songs for a 70+ hour game may cause some overly-used songs, but it didn't (and doesn't) matter to me. There are happy songs (My Village is Number One), other so sad that, combined with the events that are happening in the story, could make you cry (Shattering Egg of Dreams), others that you could never forget their melody (Emotions), some bad-guy trademarks (Grahf, Emperor of Darkness) and the coolest battle music (Stage of Death, Knight of Fire-for bosses). The battles are very entertaining, I often find myself actually looking for fights. The mech battles are cool, featuring 3D mechs and lots of options. The mechs use fuel for their attacks, and you build "Attack Levels" as you fight to perform even better combos and moves. The character fights are cool too, featuring a fighting system using the buttons on the controller to execute different attacks and Deathblows. You can also reserve that AP and accumulate it for a strong and very damaging combo. Finally, this game shouldn't be played by kids (15+ only) because of some mature scenes (drugs, blood, sex, etc.) and very, VERY complicated story (you WON'T understand it completly in a first try through the game). Definetly buy it, you won't regret it. If you liked Neon Genesis Evangelion or Final Fantasy, you will love this, since its a mix of both. Also buy the soundtrack. The best RPG ever created and from the looks of it, will remain at the TOP forever.

It's a shame to know that such a wonderful concept of a game had to go through budget cuts due to other Final Fantasy games coming out. Xenogears is a pure RPG classic. However, I only recommend this to those who are in love with the RPG genre and also whom don't mind to read for long periods of time. This brought a great gaming experience, but some times frustrating. Often the mazes the characters were forced to find their way through brought on a lot of aggravation when there were a lot of random encounters. By the time the battle was through one could almost have forgotten where they came from.
The Pros: Excellent story with strong, believable characters.
Beautifully done animated cutscenes with voice-overs
Fun battle system with learned combos and magic.
Quite a lengthy game, (took me 63 hours to complete)
A gorgeous musical score, (get the soundtrack too!)
The Cons: Often times frustrating areas to explore.
Graphics can be quite pixilated
The battle sounds are quite repetitive
Overall, Xenogears is one of those hidden, "treasures" in my oppinion. However, if you are not an avid RPG player, young into the genre, and lack patience for lots of reading, Xenogears may not be the game for you. Though the game is hard to find, (which may change, since it may soon become a Greatest Hit) Although if you can't wait, and believe your game collection is not complete with out it, (which is what I believe), run and get it now, it is worth a great cost. If the gameplay doesn't capture you, then at least the heartwarming, yet complex story will...and vice versa. There's enough to love about this game!
A truly great game.

This game had what I wanted: it made me think, it had plot, the characters ARE deep (if you actually, you know, READ the words that appear onscreen), the gameplay didn't get old, music was great, and it provided a challenge. Oh, and it's long.
I'm not a real graphics kind of guy; if a game has great visuals, more power to them, but I won't deny a game greatness because the graphics are a tad outdated. Besides, this game has excellent Anime artwork throughout.
As far as talking is concerned, the grammar was sub-par, but I forgive them; grammar doesn't make or break my game.
The real area causing anger would probably be the letdown of Disc Two: not to spoil, but the majority of it are the main characters telling you the story. A great part of this is that you have time to absorb the story. A horrid drawback is that...well, you can't move. You're just waiting, waiting for the time when you get to go back to exploring and playing in the rather enjoyable battle system.
At the end, you regain control for an indefinite amount of time to do as you wish, so I forgave Square and Monolith for what they did to the rest of the disk. It's a shame that funding was cut, because that second disk could have been phenomenal. All in all, it was still excellent.
And then the deepness. It makes you question your perception of religion, if you read enough into it. It truly poses great questions, which, to the ordinary person, seem contrived and impossible, but actually when thought about make much more sense than it seems.
Anyhow, I loved this game, and I wish I owned a copy. If you can borrow it, do so; if you can buy it, do so; if you can steal it...uh...get back to me on that one. It's worth getting, definitely worth playing.
Very good..

After beating Xenosaga, and hearing all the hype around this game I just had to see if it was really that good, and so I just beat it.
Gameplay- After playing Xenosaga I feared about hearing how Gears were the dominant thing in Gears, fearing that they would be exactly like they were in Xenosaga. To my relief gears are done perfectly. Their is no way to possibly describe how fun it is to go around and just fight in gears. The character fighting however, it's decent, but to me felt like it was pushed on you, especially after you get out of your gear. The length isn't all that long, I beat it in about 57-58 hours and I thought I was going at a rather slow pace. I even just left the game on a few hours here and their forgetting to turn it off, so it's even less than that.
Graphics- The videos are nice. But then you play it... It's old, but even for it's time I thought it was just a little bit too chunky and choppy. The Anime really fits in nicely with it, as long as your not paying attention to the dubbing... which made Godzillas earlier English movies look good.
Sound- The soundtrack is beautiful. But however it does kind of get old by the second disk. The final battle song is wonderful, I just listened to it for five minutes before even doing a single attack.
Story-This is a masterpiece. The universe if filled with such depth, such tragedy, and so much history behind it. This is the key of the game. I would highly recommend finding Perfect Works on the internet if you cannot speak Japanese. It explains so much, and after reading that and looking back on a certain part of a game, did I truly understand how much thought and carefulness was put into it.
Just some questions that people are sure to be having.
Is this game the sequel to Xenosaga? No one really knows yet. The Zohar is in the game, which is one key as to what says it very well might be. The developers all state that it's not, but you can speculate that's only because they don't have the legal rights to Xenogears. Their are many arguments that can be made for both sides, which it wouldn't be worth my time to go into them. If it is then it's a modified version.
Will this be the FF killer? No, it seems few people have a real craving for extremely deep stories, that can even question moral beliefs. Because of that, the Xeno games will not be the FF killer.
Overall, this game was rushed, that was excruciatingly clear when I popped on in the second disk. Even with it being rushed, this was one of the best games I have ever played.
Awesome Game!

I think this game is awesome. Though its graphics could be better this game is great! I think the best thing about Xeno Gears is the gears, I think the gears are totally awesome. I think this game is a mix between Final Fantasy IIV and Armored Core. I think all RPG fans should at least try Xeno Gears.
A unexpected surprise!

Xenogears is a SUPER game! I love all the chacters and gears. And the extra jump option is a way cool change. I love the fighting option in Kislev Imperial Capital. It's really awsome when the 2 player option becomes available. It has some humor(and Chu-chu's soooo cute!) I urge you to go to the store and buy it right now! Even grils will enjoy this game) I was going to pick the 4 and a half because there was 2 scenes I didn't approve of. The characters are realistic and in depht . Ramsus and Miang really are hard to beat in the last battle. This game gives Final Fansy 7 a run for it's money!
