This game is awesome. One of the best plots I've seen in a video game. The characters are amazing, all with their own personalities and traits. This game is addicting. The battle system is just awesome. Combos and deathblows are awesome to watch. Gear Battles are very cool. The anime(Yes you heard me right ANIME!!!) is very good. The only problem with the anime is there's not enough! I wish there was more; there is about 20 minutes total. This game is a must buy!!!!
This game is a rare gem among RPGs and Square's greatest!!

Xenogears is one ...kicking game, if you liked FF7, you'll love XG . But the drawback is once you beat it twice or so, you probably won't want to play it again, it's a very long game. But after a long while, you'll crave some more Xenogears once again!

When I first started playing Xenogears, I thought "I hope Square made this anywhere near as good as the FF games." As I played on, I found that it was definatly as good, and in many areas, even better.
I've never played another game, not just RPG's but any game, period, with a deeper and more involving storyline. One bad thing about this though, is that while they're going deeper and deeper into the story, the actual gameplay slows down and you spend a lot of time reading and trying to remember things said, which turns off some players more interested in fighting and battles. Most of the second disc is mainly reading text and very little exploring until the very end, and I would've hoped for more exploration of some of the areas, but I'll live.
After the spectacular story, there comes the actual gameplay, and while it in a way does play second fiddle to the story line, it doesn't slouch either, though it can sometimes be a little repetative fighting the same enemies over and over in some areas...
Overall, while it is one of my favorite games on the PS, it won't appeal to all RPGers, especally not softcore ones. But if you play RPG's mainly for the story, this game will not disapoint.

I bought this game in August, 2000. I was expecting just another SquareSoft Quickie (Not much effort), but I was very wrong. Xenogears truned out to be one of the most fun games I've played in a while. With colourful hand drawn cinematics, a unique and innovative battle system, and interesting characters, Xenogears is at the top of it's class in terms of gameplay and storyline.
Xenogears' storyline is one of the best that I've ever seen. In it, you don't know what's going to happen, as the story is kept hidden from you for mch of the game. You are told what to do as it happens, which is a nice refreshing change from traditional RPGs, in which there is one "Winning" task to be completed, and then the game is over. Squaresoft has created an amazing world with Xenogears, and they should continue in this direction - for profit and customer happiness.

The reason I decided to write this revue is, when I saw a description of this game, the reviewer simply stated that it brought a tear to his eye to think about it. When I saw that revue all I could think was this person felt the same way I did about this game. I can remember sitting spellbound in front of my T.V. waiting for the plot to unfold. The graphics aren't the best ever, but they are good enough to keep the game interesting. Also the new battle system, which is quite unique to the rpg format, for the most part adds to the excitement of the game. The only problems that I can identify with the battle systems, is after a while it becomes rather repetitive when you are forced to use the same deathblows over and over again. Chrono cross seemed to try and imitate the points based battle system from this title but made a mess of it in the process. Anyway back to the thing that makes this game so special, the plot. What really excited me about it was how, it started out so locally battle between two warring kingdoms and then continued to expand to braoder and broader concepts, such as life, love and creation and existance itself. For anyone who gets this game it takes a while until you even begin to touch the real plot behind this game, but keep playing and you will get blown away.

Xenogears is not so much a game as it is an experience. On the RPG level it is very basic. Turn based combat, experience points, leveling up and exploration.
In terms of plot, it is one of those special stories that is so amazing it stays with you forever. When it's over you'll secretly long for more.
On the continent of Ignas, there are two warring nations. Aveh to the north and Kislev to the south. The nations have been at war so long, neither can recall the reason they are fighting. Drawn into this conflict is Fei Wong, an amnesiac trying to discover the truth of his existence. On the path to finding himself, he is joined by Elhyam Van Houten, a military officer from the Sacred Empire of Solaris. Little does Fei know that their meeting has been preordained since the creation of the world.
Rife with religious allegory, fierce battles and a stunning soundtrack, everyone should experience Xenogears before it goes out of print.

This game brought some controversy even before its release. Some fundamentalist found its storyline absurd, atheistic and therefore must be condemned. I believe this is due to misunderstanding.
If you love Anime (excluding Pokemon), this game should sound very natural. Bit of violence, some mecha, some religion, and some Sci-Fi elements are blended perfectly into one game.
Graphic: Anime scenes are generally well done. Afterwhile, you will see the influence of Production I.G. with character design, etc. However, general graphic looks unrefined at best. Characters are very blocky and stiff. You will find this tolerable with PS2 option on.
Sound: Amazing, simply amazing. Chrono Cross moved me to buy the soundtrack, but this is even better. Every note perfectly captures the emotion of the game itself. Once you finish this game, try to listen "June Mermaid". It will ache your heart.
Story: This is where people are divided into. Some hated it, while some loved it. If you are fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Chrono Trigger, Grandia, you will love it. While some denounces this as atheistic, I think they misunderstood it altogether. This game is about timeless love brought by fate, plain and simple. Other elements are played to make this story complete, but not the primary point.
It is unknown at this point whether Xenosaga: Episode I will be true prequel or not. But if you love this game, you will be anxious to get it just like me. If you own Playstation and have yet to play this game, do yourself a favor and get a copy. You will be rewarded with 65hrs. of goodness.

Xenogears is without a doubt one of the best games ever created. The game's best feature is it's story. The story is entertaining and complex. The graphics are nice, they were great for 1998 standards. The gameplay is about average, if you're not into RPGs then avoid this game like the plague. But for those RPG lovers out there this is by far one of the best that the genre has to offer. And with a length of about 60 hours you'll be playing this one for quite a while.

the central aspect of any rpg must be the story. this game has the most enthralling storyline of any rpg i have ever played. the game play is good and you can battle in mechs or hand to hand. but really, the story is unbelievable.

If there were more stars, I would give it a ten or more. This game may not have 3d characters, but it makes up for it with an awesome storyline that is just too good to believe. Twists and turns, betrayal, love, and death are all there... and the characterizations are complete. The music is just unforgettable, and the loads of strange and fun secrets/games makes this a game with a lot of replay value.
For those of us who desire good stories in RPGs, Xenogears can't be beat... Xenogears RULES!
