This is fact...not opinion

To sum up the entire game, Xenogears, into but a 1000 words would be pointless and unjust. Haha, I know it may seem that is an awefully bold ... statement....but its the truth. This game.... is the most exhilirating, encapturing, and well made RPG ever created. This is FACT, no lie. There is not an RPG player among us who can deny it. This game contains the most well thought out and implemented plot and storyline ever created by Square...well ever created period. There are no downcast characters (as we have seen countless times before by square) no, all characters are enjoyable and even admirable. What makes this game better than any other though, is the fact for once, Squaresoft concentrated on story instead of graphics...and the result was the most valuable and infamable RPG ever created. If you miss this game, you miss the best...and thats a fact.

an rpg that is absolutly stunning

with Xenosaga forthcoming, (its in the mail!) I was remebering the first, Xenogears. I played this when it first came out back in 98', and I can safely say it changed my gaming completely. Xenogears' has a captivating story, and at the time its gameplay was impossible to dislike. Remarkably, the Japanese makers did a wonderful job on creating a story with a relgion similiar to that of the West. Insightful views on a world dominated completely by the 'shepards' high above in the sky, and the lives of the 'lambs' on the earth.

Theres no easy way to say it, I get all confuddled just trying. 5+ for story, 5+ for gameplay.

One of the best RPGs ever made!

This game is easily one of the top 5 rpgs ever made. I love everything about it, from the highly stylized and unique graphics, to the innovative story line and battle system, and have played through it multiple times just because of how great a game it is. The battle system is awesome, and never leaves you bored because there are usually more new moves to learn, the combo attacks are an innovative solution and makes fighting battles and awesome experience.
The games story is amazing, not only is it well thought out, but the plot twists and concepts presented in the story are amazing. Whoever wrote the storyline for this game really took their time, and thought out every concept. This RPG will easily keep anyone hooked, and if not for the story then for the battles and beautiful anime style cut-scenes. I give it a 5 because it is my #2 favorite RPG of all time, and almost ties with #1, which is Final Fantasy 6 or 3 in America.

5 stars is not enough for this EPIC R.P.G!!!

This is perhaps the greatest game ever. If you have played FF VII and thought that was great, prepare to be blown away. The story of the game rivals, if not beats, the quality of that of a novel. The gave actually had me occasionally questioning my religious beliefs that were previously firm.

The gameplay is also an exciting change in pace. Half of the game, you fight hand to hand, learning and then executing combos or ether(magic) attacks. The other half, you fight in large gears, humanoid robots. You can then also use combos, but must also watch your fuel consumption, so you don't get left high and dry. In all, the fighting takes a lot more thinking than a FF game where you just hit x to select attack every time.

The graphics are old school, meaning that if graphics are everything to you this is a bad choice. However, I was at home in the 2 1/2D environment, where you are free to rotate the camera at will. There are over 100 characters with a somewhat important role, so you must be on the ball at remembering everyone. There are 8 main playable characters, each with different combos and ether skills, as well as gears.

(I realize that this is not the actual average, but Story would be above 10 if possible.)

A wonderful classic!!!

This is one of the most entertaining yet serious RPG's I have ever laid my hands on!! This story starts off with our hero in the midst of a gear battle in his village which is destroyed and many of his friends killed. He seeks answers in the empty gear that remains at the scene, and the vast game unfolds as he uncovers the secrets of his past and future. As I said, this is one serious game of biblical porportions! The music is among the best, and if you like martial arts and robots, this is the game for you!! Get it while it is still out there!!

THE Greatest Game Ever

Xenogears must be played by any RPG or anime fan. That much is given. The story is incredible, though admittedly hard to understand the first time through. I have played it four times through and finally understand it. It's worth replaying, though, trust me.
I must say the story is what sets this game apart. The graphics in gear combat are something else for the ps1, but the rest is only so-so. Still, veteran gamers know that graphics are far from what make an rpg great. Musicwise, the composer did a fantastic job, although nothing is really catchy (that could be good or bad depending on your point of view). In style you may find yourself thinking of FF7, but hey, it is a Square game, right? Overall, a good score.
The combat system is refreshingly unique. No "attack, magic, item, run" menu this time. Magic is called Ether and is hardly ever used except for healing. Combat, when in character form, relies on learning Deathblows by pressing different button combinations to defeat your foes. Certain button attacks consume more Attack Points. AP's you don't use are stored for later use as one devastating combo move.
Gear combat relies on fuel. Again, the same button-based system is implied, this time with fuel instead of AP's. The more Deathblows you learn as a human, the higher level techniques you'll be able to perform in a gear. It is possible to reach Attack Level Infinity, but I shouldn't reveal that...
The ending will leave you aching for more, but don't fret. Namco and Monolith Soft are releasing a prequel (Xenosaga Episode 1) this Spring. I'm definitely checking it out. You should too.

Great story, deep philosophy, but dont play it for that. Play it for the incredible battle system. The fact that this game's average rating isn't 5 is a TRAVESTY! Well, its not that big a deal but this is one of the best games ever.

Complicated, but top notch.

This game is definitely for those who like a story on the thought-provoking and serious side. Mindless hack and slashers need not apply. Though there is quite a lot of fighting in this game, it also requires a lot of reading and a good deal of patients. There are times when this game can be a bit hard or frustrating, but the deep storyline and the glorious anime cut scenes will keep serious RPG gamers coming back for more. In a time when games seem to be more about good graphics and sex appeal then trying to immerse a player into the time and plot of the games situation, it might be a little refreshing dip to visit a game that puts an emphasis on good graphics (for itýs time) And a wonderful idea filled story.

This game is the rarest game on ps1. It's one of the best rpg's I've played so far and the combos are wicked.
