One of the most interesting plots Square has ever created.

I purchased Xenogears simply because I had credit with a retailer that was in danger of expiring. Square was known for its reputation of producing well-made games, so I decided to use my credit to purchase Xenogears. I have played many of Square's games, and it is my opinion that Xenogears has perhaps the best plot I have ever experienced. The game begins with Fei, a young man who does not remember anything from his past. Due to events beyond his control, Fei is forced into a quest he does not even understand. During the game, Fei gradually discovers more about himself (or so he thinks). Then suddenly the game has a large plot twist that causes you to rethink many key events. You suddenly find that many key people are not who you think they are--literally. I hope this is not too vague, but I do not want to give away any of the surprises. As for the gameplay, it often suffers from being too slow. However, the plot is enough to keep you playing the game.

A great story telling RPG

This game is one of the best storytelling RPG's I have ever played. The game-play and controls are simple and the story is incredibly intriguing, the game play flies by with ease. Bottom line, if you got the money buy the game.

This game RULES!

This game is worth well over the price it costs. It is such an Amazing game, especially if you are an RPG fan. If you're not an RPG fan and you want to start, I suggest not to start with this game, because it is very hard for beginners and it's Very long. The only flaw in this game is that there's a lot of dialogue. Anime is awesome, but it could use some more, the gameplay is great, great storyline, and some replay value. Great Value!

Xenogears lives up to the Squaresoft name

Jeez, when I first picked up a Squaresoft game that WASN'T a Final Fantasy Game, and after seeing things like Bushido Blade, I really didn't know what to expect (the truth was, I didn't foresee much excitement in the future). I was blown away! Xenogears brought an awesome story to life, with a whole bunch of cool characters and plenty of action, as well as a new fighting system: the gears. TWO whole disks of nonstop fun, with a story translation better than any I've run into so far. The animation is beautiful, the people are drawn as anime, and the music is definitely a plus. Also, the new freedom of the character control and the camera was so much greater than I was used to in an RPG. The only problem? The story could have been executed so much better than it was, and Squaresoft could have taken the game easily onto a third disk with all the loose ends they left. There was so much potential in this one-of-a-kind storyline, but for some reason, it wasn't carried out. Still, the game wasn't a disappointment, and provided me with nearly an entire summer of fun. To anyone that luvs Final Fantasy, RPG's in general, or Science Fiction/Fantasy, I recommend this game to you.

Possibly the most twisted plot-line ever!

SquareSoft is up to its usual standards of excellence in XenoGears, a very unique RPG that combines one-on-one unarmed fighting with giant mecha combat. Occasionally even giant mecha versus unarmed fighters, which is ... interesting. Many early RPG's focused entirely on fighting and left the characters with no personality at all. Fei, the main character of XenoGears, compensates by having enough personalities for everyone! Throughout the course of this very lengthy game, Fei's sordid past is revealed piece by piece, explaining the mysterious voices he hears in his mind and his phenomenal ability with the Gears. You _will not_ get bored with the plot. You may need to play the game through twice just to get the story straight, but you definitely will not get bored. The opening and ending animation, and the many animated cut-scenes, are wonderful, and I will be surprised if this game does not spin off its own anime. I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Great game by Square

This game has the best plot since Final Fantsy 4j (2 in America). The battle system is interesting especially since there are 2 of them. Definetly worth the purchase if you like RPGs

You don't have an overabundance of battles, however, untill you learn special moves for charicters, the battles CAN be difficult. Also, gear battles are ok, but the only way you can power up your gears is through purchasin items, and the limited amount of fuel to run them is a major annoyance.

Even with all the bad aspects, the plot alone (a rather dark one I warn you) is definetly worh the purchase

Forget FF8: this is Square's best 32-bit effort.

It seems that as time goes on, the RPG juggernaut Square seems to be leaning more on graphical flash and whimsey than on what made them so great in the first place: the story (which, by the way, if you're new to rpg's, you owe it to yourself to play FF3 and Lunar, two of the best ever in the genre). Xenogears represents a stark turnaround from FF7, which was in itself a good game, but not a hllmark by any means. Xenogears does have some flash, but its strength rightfully lies in its incredibly complex plot. My only major complaint is that with all of the buildup and tension provided in the first disc, the second disc is a slight letdown. And be forwarned, this game can get LONG, upwards of 100+ hours if you go through every nook and cranny. But I guess that's partially what RPG's are about...

GREAT!

I play RPGs all the time and I've never seen a plot as complex and emersive as this! It is made by squaresoft (the same people who make the Final Fantasy series) and is a true work of art. The graphics are 3d, while the characters are 2d sprites, but it doesn't decrease the value of the game. Again I state that the plot is the best I have ever seen. Some people are tuned off when the game starts conveying religiously sensitive material, but the more careful observer will note that it's just a game, and the plot later reveals that these themes are perfect for the story.

Wow.

One thing I'll say for Xenogears--it was pretty amazing. Theplot reads like a science fiction novel, featuring incredibly deepcharacters (the main character, Fei Fong Wong, undergoes development that must be seen to be believed), an outstanding (yet incredibly complex and often difficult to understand) plot, and terrific gameplay. Among the unique features of the gameplay are a combo-based battle system, fully rotatable three dimensional realtime environments, and, of course, battling it out in giant robots capable of extremely powerful (and very cool looking) attacks; actually, the battles are full of style and coolness. As I rant, people wonder why I dropped the fifth star. Well, that star has been sacrificed because of the dismal failure that is the second disc of the game. I'm not sure what happened, but the designers completely changed the feel and approach of the game. For the life of me, I can't figure out why--the change is very much for the worse. Fortunately, the awesome first disc is far far longer than the second disc. This is a long long game and a wild ride, but stick with it--the ending is worth it. END

Incredible action story!

What a great game. Wow. Graphics for the gears was great, while for the ppl, it was old school. It has a great plot, and some very good fighting in it. It is somewhat like FF7, but a bit more futuristic. This competes with some of the FF games for best one ever made(as you can guess,I'm a hardcore RPG-Squaresoft supporter). It is a great story for the struggle for a planet, and good against evil. Definitely a must-buy.
