Xenogears - where do I even begin? It is easily one of the most amazing games I have ever come across. It's greatest asset is its storyline, which is rendered in sublime detail and rich characterizations. The storyline covers destiny, giant robots, the role of religion, questions of mental powers, and other things that you just wouldn't expect from a mere video game. Dare I say, this is actually a storyline that you'll probably sit back and ponder long after the game is over.
Graphically, Xenogears is different from the Final Fantasy series. Instead of portraying polygonal figures against pre-rendered backgrounds, Xenogears does the opposite. It puts the backdrops in three dimensions and renders the characters as flat sprites. While the sprites do suffer from pixelization up close, the ability to interact with and rotate your surroundings to see them from different angles makes the locations seem more real, rather than just pretty pictures. Although many people have complained about the blocky character graphics, I think that the storyline more than forgives it.
From an audio standpoint, Xenogears is impressive. Its music is done by Yasunori Mitsuda, who also did the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger and later Chrono Cross. The music sets the perfect emotion in every scene with its triumphant fanfares and its somber, musicbox-like melodies. Most of the sound effects are fine, but the character voices needed work.
The core of any RPG is naturally it's battle system. Xenogears has a unique turn-based system. As the game progresses, characters gain more Stamina Points. There are three levels of attacks that can be executed, costing anywhere from one to three Stamina Points - those costing more typically being more powerful. Characters can employ stored and unused Stamina Points for later on in a battle to pull off multiple attack combos. As is typical of any RPG, magic is also available. When you fight in the Gears (robots), the system is similar, except for Stamina Points are non-existant.
This may sound like a glowing review, and it is. But Xenogears is not without some faults, which I will now describe. Although the characters can jump as they move through their 3-D environments, the hit detection isn't as sharp as it should be. This makes the rare platform jumping segments of the game more frustrating than they should be. Another criticism is that Disk 2 has the main characters giving many monologues to cover plot ground quickly. It's obvious that the game designers probably wanted to do more and elaborate on the dungeons and battles they speak of, but for whatever reason they didn't. And what dungeons that do exist on Disk 2 are highly contrived and brainteasing affairs that seem thrown in for the sheer sake of slowing the player down. Upon completing them, you probably wonder how you ever got through the obscure mess of puzzles.
But as critical as these may seem, they do little to tarnish the final rating. The pros seriously outweigh the cons. This is a fine game that any fan of RPGs should have, as well as anyone who wants to read a cool anime storyline. Get this game, comprehend the detailed story, and then you too may stand tall and shake the heavens!

Squaresoft is one of my favorite gaming companies, but this time they've outdone themselves. With religious implications and an incredibly complex plot, and improving on their already amaizing combat interface, this is a game for all time. I strongly reccomend this to any RPG player, moreso to Squaresoft fans. In some senses, the intricate plot makes it more like a playing a character in an epic movie.

Seriously - this is one of the best games I have played... I just got a PS 2 and a DreamCast last month and I have spent more time on my old Playstation playing Xenogears because of the excellent storyline.
Really the only gripe I have is the typical ruse of sucking the player in with lots of CG scenes at the beginning and then... well no more for a while but no biggie!
Trust me - when the sequel comes out your are going to want to have played this one (at least download a walkthrough and blitz through it - you won't be disappointed).

Xenogears is a game based on a man named Fei Fong Wong who has lost his memory in a terrible accident. This game is too fun if you like mechs and such, but its the best game ive ever played and I have played all final fantasys... what does that tell you? :)

I never thoughts that Xenogears would be so great. Really. I must say, it has a confusing plot, throughout most of the beginning. But, later on, things will become alot clearer, and easier to understand. The graphics aren't exactly great, the characters and such are a bit blurry and may take some getting used to. There are cut scenes, anime style, which include decent voice acting. This is a hard game to find, but it's worth the money you'll pay!

I could ramble on and on about this game but I am going to make it short. Xenogears has an excellent story line along with excellent gameplay an excellent battle system and excellent characters. Added all up this is THE best RPG I have every played. It may not have state of the art graphics anymore but it was worth every sleepless night I had. Highly recommended.

I've just beat the game and it is awsome. The story line is great and while playing you're on the edge of your seat with the non-stop action. There is a wide variety of characters and plot twists. I highly recommend this game for people who love rpg games.

I played and beat this game over two years ago. It is so great. The plot- the characters, the depth. Most RPG's dont have NEARLY as much text, and if you are a reader, who loves a great plot, play this game. In most RPG's, they do not have little "things" that people just talk about and do. You will notice a TON of this is Xenogears, and trust me, it makes the game absolutely teriffic. Any RPGer, BUY THIS GAME!

A great epic and highly recommended for RPG fans. An awe inspiring and wonderfully complex story. The massive amount of text become rather tiring near the end, especially the part where Fei sits in his rocking chair while he dictates the story at half hour intervals with the only control of the character being returned to the player by a boss battle after which they are returned to Fei in his Chair, talking for another half hour. However flawed, it should still be considered a masterpiece of storyline and should be at least taken under consideration by gamers to add to their collection.
SquareSoft's best work.

Xenogears far surpasses any of the other games square has put out in recent years. The game's storyline is the best to come out of the rpg world. The graphics do tend to get a bit blocky in some parts but overall the graphics are good. You should definitely buy this game if your and rpg fan.
