Fascinating story. I mean, UTTERLY fascinating. It entraps you, it grabs you, and it holds you. About the only problem with the story is that it's really long, which means you have to remember a lot of details to make certain connections. As soon as I finished the game, I had to go back and play the first portion of Disc 1, and then I matched everything up. However, the 3d system is fairly interesting. Much more interactive and grabbing than FF7 and FF8's (two games also by Squaresoft) 3d characters in 2d environments (although the pre-rendered backgrounds were interesting). The sprite graphics needed a bit of work, though, as they are slightly pixelated. Furthermore, the battle engine could also slightly use some improvement. The gear system, I like, and the deathblows are neat, but I don't think there's enough variety. For each character, the DBs are identical in key configuration (for those of you who played FF6, it's like Sabin's Blitz moves), although the graphic and move is different. Spells? There are spells? Oh, you mean that extra menu option you never use because it doesn't do anything useful. THOSE spells... ah... However, the music is incredible. Although occaisionally a bit overused, it's incredible. Even better than the FF7 soundtrack. I bought the Xenogears soundtrack a while ago, enjoyed pretty much every second of it. Another thing worth buying. But overall, aside from the slightly lacking graphics and battle engines, the game is extremely worth the buy, because the story is more compelling than some novels I've read.
Xenogears - The best Final Fantasy spinoff yet.

SquareSoft should be awarded a "Best RPG Maker Ever" award. This is it folks, THE definiative RPG. I will admit that for the first 10 - 15 minutes, the game was not all that great. But after that, I skipped eating, was late for work(on several occasions), and even ignored my girlfriend for several days (no other video game has ever done that). The story line just kind of "sucks you in" along with the awesome sound track that accompanies the game (Great work Yasunori). What people don't know is that the game is based on a Japanese fairy-tale (forgot the name, sorry) of ever-lasting love. I don't know if SquareSoft intended this, but they always seem to throw in a little bit of the real world in thier games. Also, if you payed attention to EVERYTHING Cloud said in FF7 you would have heard him mention "Xenogaeos" (Something along that nature). Of course, SquareSoft split some of the developers from each game to help with the other. All in all, this game has still never been matched by anything else on the market yet and looks to be that way for some time.
Totally overrated...

From what people make this game out to be, it was supposed to be the "best game of all time" perhaps, but I saw it completely different. I dunno if it is just me, but I found this games storyline incredibly boring, the battle system was OK in some areas, and the music was absolutely dreadful. Let me break it down for you....
Music: 1/5...
Why? Because it repeats the same tunes over...and over...and OVER AGAIN. The reason I gave it one star, is because when you first hear the music it sounds good, but after hearing it in so many areas throughout the game, its tedious and very annoying. And when it comes down to it I wasn't very satisfied with the music to begin with. Like for example, most of the areas in the game will play the same exact music, so it gets very repetitive.
Storyline: 2/5
I found the storyline pretty horrific as far as being interesting and captivating. Not once in the game did I really care about the characters or what was really going on. And there is so much talking in this game I could probably fall asleep after drinking 10 glasses of cafe mocha...To be blunt...there is way too much talking...and the story isnt explained till the end. So throughout the whole game you are confused about what the heck is going on.
Entertainment- 3/5
Why am i giving it a decent score for entertainment? Well there are a lot of interesting mini games here and playing in the xenogears mixed with humans is also interesting.
Playability- 4/5
This is probably the only good part about this game. You can actually jump around here (unlike most RPGs) and there is plenty to explore in your environment. This sometimes makes traveling through long boring dungeons...not so dull.
Graphics- 3.5/5
The graphics are alright, not good enough to give four stars, but pretty good for when it came out. I am a sucker for 3d playstation one style graphics...kinda the old-school style that playstation RPGs used to have. If you are looking for final fantasy 8 graphics....you wont find them here.
Overall- 2.5/5
If you have a lot of time on your hands...or like playing games for extended periods of time...this is for you.
I however, do not enjoy playing games for 80 hours just to see the ending. Yes thats right...80 + hours just to finish it off, not including finishing everything such as side quests...just the storyline. How someone can sit through 80 hours of jabbering and a boring storyline...and let's not forget annoying music...I have no idea. I hope some day I will understand why this game is considered to be so great...but I don't think it will happen.
Do i recommend this? Nope.
Finished this one thru sheer will power

FF 7 was a complete joy to play and I was sorry it ended so quick and easy (It takes only about 45-50 hours with no fooling around). But the minigames like the snowboarding were great and there were always more small quests to try and complete if you got bored with the main quest. Xenogears was what I would describe as a rather Joe Bloggs type RPG. There was no real challenge, all you had to do was the most obvious thing next and the story proceeded. The characters were mostly 1 dimensional and uninspiring and there was just a ton of items with no real use or importance. The story was also convulted and drawn out. Near the end I finished out of sheer determination to not give up on what was ultimately a bust. Definitely rent this one before going out and buying it, you would profit from knowing what you are getting into. Square should concentrate on creating more strategy/RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics that really show the depth and creativity the company is capable of.
Not as good as it could be.

This game starts off great with an interesting storyline and a unique fighting style, but as the game continues, you find yourself falling asleep from the long, and I mean long story sections of the game. There is too much dialog and not enough exploring in this game. This game could have been made a lot better.
Over-hyped and too long.

I enjoy all types of RPGs. Old and new-school, on most any system, and any style or setting, so this is not biased in any way. Xenogears was bad. Well, it wasn't completely bad. The first 50 hours that take up Disk 1 were quite enjoyable. When a a short RPG is good the whole time, it passes by quickly because you're having so much time. However, when you have an 80+ hour-long game like Xenogears and when you're going through the Chinese water torture that is the last 30 hours of the game, it suddenly seems bad. Very bad. Then again, the entire game started out with problems. When you have 1000s upon 1000s of lines of dialog in an RPG and the text goes by about t...h...i...s... s...l...o...w, it can get on your nerves, especially when the programers seemed to think your reward for shelling out [$] on the game was to slow down the text EVEN MORE when important dialog is spoken. There is no option to speed up text. None. All RPGs have this option (or at least are nice enough to make the text all show up at once), but Xenogears lacks this option.
Then there's the FMV. Small tip for next time, Squaresoft: If you don't know how to dub the anime sequences, DON'T. Take Evolution 2's example and subtitle them. The dubbing-over is HORRIBLE. The voices themself aren't bad, but the voice actors seem to be blind since the synchronization of lip movement and speech is completely off. Not by a little, but by a LOT.
Then there's a story, which is quite simply a direct copy of Neon Genesis Evangelion's plot, with a few names changed around, and a few characters added. Even Elly bears an unquestionable resemblence to Asuka. The Gazel Ministry? That would be Seele. Deus? That would be Lilith. (Right down to the 7 eyes), etc.
So what's good about Xenogears? There are about 50 hours of enjoyable game play. That could easily be the length of an entire RPG. (Or 2 in Suikoden's case), so it's not completely bad. And, well, the song that is your reward for beating the game is quite nice. ;)
I have played a lot better

This is just the plain truth, I have learned that noteverything square does i great, case in point: XENOGEARS. You realizeat the end of the game that it is just not that fun, sure the graphics are great yada yada yada, but the actual enjoyment you receive from playing this game is not there. For crying out loud, there are practically zero secrets in this game! In the end when you get the airship(always happens) and get to explore the world there is almost nothing to do maybe....2 secrets. What is that about? Plus all those neat armors you get at the end of the game cant be used! THE ENTIRE END STAGE IS FOUGHT IN LARGE COMBAT MODE. In summary I give the game a 3 and if I had one word to describe it...."eh". END
An unforgetable expierence.

Man, I heared Xenogears was a great game, but it went beyond what I heard when I actually played it. Xenogears is one of the best RPGs I have ever played. I'll start witht the story. The story is what makes this game unforgetable. The deep religous issues made the story so interesting. This is also the most serious story I have ever heared in a game. There are very little humor in the game, but there is a bit in there. The graphics are not the best. The characters are ugly sprites, but the background and gear graphics are great. The gameplay is great. The battle system is creative, with different types of normal attacks, and being able to fight with or without your gears. The combo system makes the battles more fun than Final Fanatsy's battles. The anime cutscenes are amazing. While the dubbing is a little messed up, the story will make up for it. All in all, this is a game that all true gamers should add to there PSX library.
