Best PS game I've played

This game is a masterpiece, exuding quality on so many levels from the get go. It's a James Bond-like game where you're supposed to sneak around a military base and prevent armageddon. The best thing about this game is that stealth is the key. I nearly fell off my chair as my character started crawling with a box over his head, only to have the guard see it, kick it over, and pursue me! 3D as well as overhead views, good array of weapons, and an exceptionally strong story line. Full motion video is good, though lacks resolution probably because of space constraints. One caveat: there are several video game-like scenarios, so if you're not dexterous, you may have problems advancing.

Incredible graphics . . . even less credible story.

It is undeniable that MGS has hands down the best 3D graphics I have seen for the PSX. The polygonal backgrounds are excellently rendered and the use of a standard eagle's-eye camera angle never confuses the player. The static settings of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy just look cheap by comparison. The voice-acting is done by experienced thesbians(Jimmy Flinders from Akira and Ninja Turtles is particularly recognizable) and they keep the endless cinemas from becoming boring. Unfortunately, I just cannot give the same accolades to the story. It's kind of like a Spiderman or X-men yarn. On the first disk, it is focused on a joint project between the U.S government and a profit-minded corporation to test a prototype nuclear weapon. Of course, terrorists capture this weapon and that's where you come in. A masochist ninja and a mysterious informant provide intriguing sub-plots. Then by the second disk, things quickly spin out of control with numerous double-crosses, genetic engineering, and a programmable virus that kills specific people. There is one particular twist before the final showdown with Metal Gear that is completely absurd and unbelievable though I won't spoil it. If this game was an RPG, an epic storyline like this would be appropriate but Snake's mission takes place on an island facility with only 4 buildings! I just couldn't help but get the feeling that the writer was desperately trying to impress me with his talent rather than just make a plausible story.

One of the best games I have ever played. You will become totally emersed in the game and find yourself as I did skipping class/work just to see what happens next. Buy this game. I guarantee if you love action games you will love this one.

Great game but rent it

Metal Gear Solid was an excellent Playstation game. The purpose is stealth not killing everyone you see. Similar to Thief and Tenchu (in the way that its stealth first) however with a much more modern feel.

As far as game play goes if you want to get a high ranking you can only be caught a certain number of times to simply beat the game. It may start off stealth but as a drawback later on the enemies aren't really anything to worry about as your life bar and ammo amount increases. The boss fights are definitely a challenge. Even though (like a Megaman) there's always often a new weapon you got that you need for the easiest time and an easy pattern if you find you can use. For the stealth part you get a little radar thing which tells you which direction the enemies are facing and where they are to help you avoid them.

As far as Plot goes it's a little... poorly written. Strange things go on without explanation the surprise to it that surprise you don't really make any sense and the before ending things heard seem like they have been written by a four year old. (A little silly) However the game play leaves the game wonderful even with its plots difficulties. In the beginning though the plot is interesting.

As far as control goes it made take some getting used to. Once you get used to it though you well find yourself having no trouble getting your fingers to any of the buttons. Also going under things while lying down is a little weird but that's rarely even used.

The graphics are very good. No complaints they're aren't any wonderful spots to point out either. I'd compare it to a lot of the modern 3D game graphics. (Parasite Eve, Resident Evil 2)

And finally as far as length of time it can stay interesting I'd have to go too say I'm disappointed. Like the resident evil games it very short and easy to beat. Even though after you beat it there are extra items you can get and new secrets to find or different rankings you can go after. Still this can get boring for a while.

Overall the game is original a challenge and you are missing out if you don't play it, but I recommend renting it if you can and not paying the 20 dollars to buy it.

Solid Snake better than James Bond?

Metal Gear solid is one of the best games ever created, even though it was realeased around the sametime as Goldeneye, it is still better than some of the games coming out today! I know people who have bought a Playstation for this game.This game has better voice acting than some the games comming out! Even though Goldeneye sold more copys than MGS did,MGS is better. Bond is Good but Snake is great!

This game was fun and challeging. The graphic blended well with the story in a Japanese Animi(sp?)-like style. Not just a regular shoot-em up type game. You have to sneak around and have to find weapons to use so you can complete the mission. I bought the Cheat book and I still had a hard time finishing it.

Addicting as ...! Once I started plyaing it, I had to play it until it was finished. ..., it is a steal for one of the best game on any platform.

A friend let me borrow the game and I was amazed. I requires a heck of a lot of strategy. I am still waiting for a game like this for my PS2. This is the only game that got me away from play Madden 2001. Basically you go threw a bunch of missions so you can destroy metal gear, which is a nuclear weapon. The game not only includes killing and adventure, but also tries to teach you about the nuclear weapons and power. I think getting this game for ... is a steal. If you have never played it definitely buy it and play it on normal or hard mode. It will waste the adventure to play it on easy. It took me around a month to beat, playing it about 2 hours a day. Only negative is that there is a lot of talking in the game.

for a start im not under 13, im 15, because i dont think you guys will pay much attention to under 13s. metal gear solid is a great game, your sneaking about but it aint such a badthing if you get spotted coz you can run and hide or fight back. the story line is great and whenever you do get spotted, it makes your heart beat faster
