The best video game on the face of this Planet!

This game is one of those games that i cant stop playing. The stories were well written out. The characters are cool. I would strongly recommend you to check this game out if youre into violent games or a fan of the other metal gear games but havent yet played this game. I would rather play this game in one room for a month instead of listening to good charlotte.

The best game plot I've ever seen

WOW!!! I played this game at a friends house a long time ago, and couldn't stop! I HAD to find it somewhere, or I would go nuts! I bought here, and it was in perfect shape! The characters, plot, and everything is just amazing!! The graphics aren't that good, but what do you expect for a playstation 1 game. Still you don't need good graphics to see the best game ever made, Metal Gear Solid!!!!!!!!!

Somewhat overrated

Though I applaud the game designers' efforts to make a truly cinematic game, I'm afraid the effort failed. Okay, yes, with all the cut scenes and the linear plot, playing this game is much like watching a movie--but a BAD movie. The writing is pale, the voiceovers are wooden, and the graphics in the cut scenes don't pass muster. It all comes off as melodramatic, convoluted, and tedious. Minus the storyline and the cut scenes, the gameplay is pretty good, actually--maybe three and a half stars. Also, the whole thing is too easy to get through--you can do it in two days or less.

I suppose that my final judgement is that for gamers over age 14 Metal Gear Solid is unegaging. That can probably be said for the vast majority of Playstation games, though.

If you want a good spy story, go read a novel.

Good game, for 10 minutes

Metal Gear Solid has its hits and misses. First, it has great gameply. Instead of playing John Rambo and killing everyone within site with a giant machine gun, Snake uses stealth, a silenced pistol and a neck breaking move he learned from watching WWF to infiltrate an enemy-infested base. The graphics are good for a Playstation games, and the controls are thoughtfully laid out. The music changes with the situation: slow and melodic for when you're walking around, but tense and fast when you start fighting some enemies.

So with all that said, what could possibly be wrong with the game? Let's start with the game length. For a game with two disc, you'd expect days, or weeks of action, right? Nope, it took me about 15 hours to finish the game. So what about replay? Nope, exact same mission, except you're wearing a tuxedo. Woohoo! Finishing the game against again and you'll get a stealth suite, so you can finish the game in a shorter time period.

Second, this game has more bad acting and campy drama then an entire week of soap operas. We're talking about prime grade, mid-afternoon soap opera drama here folks. Solid Snake is suppose to be the toughest, most experience, and most ruthless killer in the world, yet he comes this close (holding out fingers a inch apart) from crying in the game. And everytime there's a plot reversal or twist, Snake witfully snaps back, "What! " in a Clint Eastwood-esque voice. Every two minutes, someone's calling you on your radio and yaps for 10 minutes about world peace, how tough Solid is, or what they had for breakfast that morning. And what do you see for this 10 minutes? Two heads on a black screen barely moving their lips!

Then you have major plot holes. Add this together, and you'll get a game that will excite you for minute, and then make you moan and gasp at the horrible writing and acting the next minute. Spend your money on a much better third-person spying game, like Tenchu or Syphon Filter.

Espionage at it's best.

Welcome back to soldier, spy and all around hero, Solid Snake (you'll remember this guy if you ever played nintendo). Snake has seen a lot of improvments. The enemies are more alert, and will not only shoot you, but batter you to the ground with their rifles if you get to close. The action is not for the impatient (well... too impatient), as you sneak around and try to off your enemies as quietly as possible (including snapping their necks, if you can sneak up on them). You have a nice arsenal of weapons including a silenced, laser-sighted pistol, an automatic, explosives, grenades, smart missiles and so much more! The story-line is epic, although in places, a little over-done. Still, I still watch most of the cutscenes when they come along, as they are just so cool to watch. A lot of those scenes made me want to jump on a plane to Alaska that evening...

The graphics are good, the story is excellent, the gameplay is pretty good (your character can't see very far in front of him, which is kind of a pain at times) and I was totally obsessed with it for weeks (after you beat it the first time, you can get one of two special items that makes playing the game again really cool). If you beat it twice on the same save, something else kinda cool happens.

If you like spy games, you'll love this one!

Undoubtedly one of the best video games ever

After beating the game, all I could say what "wow." Where to even begin?

The storyline is fantastic and incredibly involving. It has enough plot twists to keep your head spinning, but it's never confusing. I hope everyone that played the game watched what was after the credits. One of the biggest plot twists happens at the very end.

Even though it is a great, wordy story, it's also FUN. There are few things that are less fun in a video game than sneaking around, being stealthy, and solving puzzles. The weapons never disappoint and the boards are never repetative. Sometimes the puzzles get a little bit difficult but that gives it a fun edge to it if you don't throw your controller at the TV like I thought about a few times :).

Hideo directed this so beautifully. I have never seen a video game before that actually had a movie-like feel to it or an actual directing *style*.

The game is for a very mature crowd though. I'm not saying a younger crowd couldn't enjoy it but the subjects the touch on in about the last 15 minutes of the game might not mean a whole lot to, say, a 10 year old.

The game is still fantastic. Rent this game ASAP!

Amazing

OK, this is my first video game review, so bear with me folks. Metal Gear Solid is THE flawless game. It's perfect. Superb. Excellent. Absolutely NO flaws. The gameplay is the most realistic that I have ever seen. Everything is proportionate, the weapons are evenly distributed and powerful, the guards have good vision but not to the point where they catch your every move, and the level of difficulty is right on target. The graphics are amazing as well, distorting as tension mounts (for example the DARPA Chief's death). You can feel the action mounting even more with a rumbling controller, but don't go out and buy one just for this game. As you all know, this is a game based on stealth, unlike Syphon Filter per say. You have to have tactical skills to do everything the game orders you to do. Objectives range from going through an area without being caught, to finding other characters, some in disguise, in the specific level, or by defeating a boss or sub-boss. One of the hardest tasks is passing Ocelot's torture. Talk about button mashing! Your thumbs will be aching after this segment of the game (by the way, when Ocelot says he will know if you have rapid-fire on, HE'S BLUFFING! Just thought I'd share). You all know the story is amazing. Twists and turns are around every corner, leaving you stunned, but not the the point where you're in the dark. The VR missions extra is a real help to those just beginning the game. It teaches essential moves needed to survive the game. It sure helped me. All in all, this game is the BEST game for the Playstation gaming console. Go take your [money] and go spend it on this wonderful game.

This one should have been in the DVD section!

This game could have been wonderful. It has a lot of innovative stuff, has great graphic and an almost perfect control system. HOWEVER, it has VERY little game time. You spend more time watching the video parts and (worse) the CODEC parts than controling Snake itself. Moreover, even though the story is ok, it becomes a soap opera after a while. Some dialogues are really silly, like when Snake shares his feeling about being a soldier, or when he tries to justify himself for saving Meryl instead of finishing his mission. It becomes ridiculous too often. It is really too bad, because the overall story and the innovative action would have made it a must have.

killer game

Terrorists take over a base containing nuclear weapons and Metal Gear, an mechwarrior piloted by a single man that is armed with nukes. Who's to save the day? Solid Snake, a lone professional soldier with no weapons who must rely on stealth, not combat to sneak past terrorists and accomplish his mission. Unlike any military combat games, you are not supposed to use weapons until you fight the bosses and stealth is key in order to survive. This game is great because you get to experience what it's like to deal with a scenario when you are hiding somewhere in the base guarded by many soldiers who can detect you once you go into open range. The game is called Tatical Espionage Action because tatics means to plan out a strategy to deal with the enemy, espionage means spying on secrets kind of like James Bond but Snake does not engage into firefights like Bond does. The graphics are good, the music blends with the action, but the contol is kind of awkward. Overall this game is a great deal and you see why!
