WWII: The Most Underexploited Video Game Concept

Speilberg does with Medal of Honor to the video gaming world what he did to the film world with Saving Private Ryan and what the History Channel does 24 hours a day: reinterested America with the Second World War. I haven't played a good shoot-em-up since Wolfenstein 3-D, and brother, it's been too long. This game excels at everything: top notch controls (use both analog sticks, trust me, just do it), graphics (some minor clipping probs, but hey, it's a Playstation), and gameplay (ooooooooh yes), authentic weaponry (no bogus gun names here... Browning, Walther, Colt, Thompson, Panzershrek, these are the real deal), behind the scenes detail (original artwork, your charatcter's training records and college transcript) but what really drew me in was the sound. The ambient background noise - dogs barking, planes flying overhead, German commanders shouting orders - not only make you feel like you're behind enemy lines, but you actually believe it, while the superb and unparalleled soundtrack makes those enemy lines feel like they're in a classic war film. My advice to you is to also purchase the accompanying music CD, it's that bloody good. Hopefully this will spawn a new revolution in historical-based period piece video games instead of the cookie-cutter action games set in the present and near future. Congratulations Dreamworks Interactive, you've made my century.

Easily the best first person shooter for the Playstation

I must admit that I'm a somewhat jaded game player but when I started playing Medal of Honor I was totally astonished. Believe what people say about the enemy AI in this game. It is truly incredible. I even threw a grenade at a guard dog only to have it bring it back to me in its mouth. Ouch! I now laugh when I think of the enemies in the Tomb Raider games that just run around aimlessly. Featuring a totally immersive 3D environment, including probably the best use of sound in any Playstation game, Medal of Honor quickly gives you an appreciation of the logistical aspects of planning and carrying out covert military missions. You can also feel the anxiety caused by being dropped into unfamiliar territory and knowing that you can die at any moment. In terms of weapons, there's no BFG here--just standard WWII-era pistols, rifles, grenades, etc. But they are highly effective and ammunition is plentiful. The game features a number of interesting missions, most of which are not very difficult. However, you'll definitely be satisfied when you complete each one. Make sure you hook up your Dolby Surround Sound receiver when playing this game. The sound is THAT good.

This game is the best game yet to be released for Playstation. I have played it, and am very satisfied with buying it. I sit down to play it and without even knowing (or caring), I spend three hours trying to beat it. I end up missing my favorite shows. I have been obsessed with the 1939-1945 era scince the fourth grade. This game lets me experience the war as the Men and Women that fought in it themselves, apart from the fact that I'm playing it on a TV, holding a controller, and am never hurt by the enemy fire. This game also has the best graphics and the smartest enemies yet. If you throw a grenade at them, they run away, or if they have time,they kick it back or pick it up and throw it back. The Germans shouting orders, talking, or cursing in the background really adds to the realism. If you sneak up on them around the corner, they are sometimes smoking or talking to their fellow guards. Also, taking control of the enemy machine guns is pretty amusing. All in all, this is a VERY excellent game that I would highly reccomend to all.

A Kraut Killer on the Playstation

This is the most wild game I've played. It has great graphics and sound. WWII enthusiasts should take to this, seeing the tracers fly to the left and right, hearing the debris falling following an explosion, the sounds of bullets slamming into the walls right next to you, it's cool as it gets. The only problems i have are that the machine gun that the Germans use in their bunkers and pill-boxes look more like the American Browning .50 Caliber than what the Germans would have used, the MG-42. Overall an astounding game.

One of the best 1st person action shooters of all time!

OK... let me lay it down flat for you. "Medal of Honor" is probably the best 1st person shooter I have EVER played (with the possible exception of Valve's Half-Life), and here are a few reasons why. First off, for a PSX game, the graphics are incredible and the frame rate (at least in single player mode) is consistently smooth. Better yet however, are the sound effects and music. The sound is ultra-realistic and the quality is crystal clear... play Medal of Honor with a stereo or surround sound system hooked up and you'll FEEL like you're actually in the game! The music is recorded with a professional orchestra and has the feel and sound of an epic film score (it sounds a bit reminiscent of some of John Williams' works) that keeps the mood going. Enemy animations and AI are extremely well done with intelligent enemies (they'll scream for help, flip alarm switches, and throw grenades back at you when you lob one at 'em!), and an intelligent body system that will have enemies react differently depending on what part of the body you shoot them. The missions are realistic feeling (there are infiltration and rescue missions, just to give you a clue) and are exciting with a variety of vintage WWII weapons ranging from pistols, submachine guns, a sniper rifle, and even a mighty bazooka! Great stuff! Does Medal of Honor have weak points? Yes... from a certain point of view. Its graphics, although great for PSX, can't compare with the 3D powered graphics on new 1st person shooters on PCs. Multi-player is available, but it's limited to 2 player split-screen action (somewhat reminiscent of N64's GoldenEye, although this supported 4). The frame rate is still acceptable in this multi-player, but let's face it, split-screen is not a great way to play a 1st person shooter. This is better down with a PC and a decent connection to the Internet. For console multi-player however, it ranks almost as well as GoldenEye... you choose the map, the time limit, the weapons you're allowed and the character models (you can even play as the Nazis!). Overall, there's nothing else like it available on consoles, and I honestly believe that in its own way, it gives most cheesy PC shooters a run for their movie. It's gotta rank up with Metal Gear Solid as one of the greatest PSX games of all time. HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION!

Overall the game is well worth the $40 you'll spend on it. Some pre-empts though: first, if you have played either Metal Gear Solid or Syphon Filter you will think the control is absolutely terrible at first. Give it sometime and stick with it, you get used to it. The graphics are on par with what you would *expect* from the Playstation and aren't phenominal. The music creates an errie atmosphere that will have you jumping at the crack of a bullet. For those who are WW2 hacks, Doom genre hacks, or just like shoot 'em up games- this should definately be on your wish list this holiday season.

Okay, I know that I'm going to get a lot of flak about this, but I liked this game better than goldeneye.The AI is incredible. Enemies don't just run at you blindly, and let themselves be obliterated. They hide behind corners, and will snipe you from long distances. The capper is that they will pick up grenades thrown by you, and throw them back at you. COOL. The music is also incredible. the soundtrack is sold on Amazon, and I strongly suggest that you pick it up, and hear it in it's full orchestral glory. The graphics were ragged on by a couple people. First, let me say that to the person who complained about "blocky graphics", Goldeneye was just as blocky, if not more, than Medal of Honor. Also, the death sequences are some of the most realistic that i have ever seen. Enemies fly back in remarkable realism when shot by a shotgun, or blown up by a bazooka or grenade. MOH features 12 actual WWII weapons: The M1 Garand, The Mark 10 Fragmentation Grenade, The MP40 Submachine gun, The Silenced Pistol, The Combat Shotgun, The Springfield '03 Sniper Rifle, The Walther P38 Handgun, The Stielhandgranate Hand Grenades, The Thompson Submachine Gun, The Colt .45 Handgun, The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), and The Bazooka. Each of these weapons has their purpose, and not a single one is deadweight. This game is just kick *ss. Mission difficultly is perfect, and once you master the regular game, start a new game,and type in the code "Captaindye." This will give you much harder levels, and your life bar will not regenerate as normal at the beginning of each level. This game is awesome, plain and simple. BUY IT IMMEDIATLEY!

For the most part, I always thought Playstation games were poor PC knock-offs. Well, I now own a Playstation and this game makes me very glad I do. The graphics are great (I love it when the Germans loose their helmets after taking a head shot), although they do get a little rough up close and personal. The audio is amazing - especially when you have it hooked up to a surround sound system. And the whole story line is completely addicting - you'll wish you really could take on the whole Wehrmacht by yourself. The best part, though, is the heavy machine gun - especially if you're playing with the Dual Shock Controllers. You'll giggle as you mow down a whole cluster of Germans with one pass! Definitely worth the money.

This game is definitely one of the most realistic, fun games I've ever played. The graphics are decent--about what you'd expect on the playstation--but thats not what makes this game so engaging. The sound and music and the enemy intelligence is what makes this game seem so alive and real. Nothing ruins the mood of a game more than having your enemy run around in circles or run kamikaze straight at you like in so many other shooters. Not so in Medal of Honor. The Nazis act so real at times its scary. Shoot their helmet and it flies off. Shoot em in the face or just under their helmet and they go down in one shot. Shoot once or twice in the body and they'll get knocked down and try to crawl away in desperation, and if you don't finish them off they'll roll over and keep shooting. They kick or throw your grenades back at you. The best is shooting a nazi in the leg as he picks up your grenade and watch him limp for a second before it goes off in his hand. If you get too close to them they swing the butt of their gun at you. At one point I blasted a vent to enter a room and watched a nazi look around in confusion before I shot him. If you jump around a corner and surprise a Nazi you can see him fumble for his gun as he yells stuff in German. It's all these little details plus many many more that make this game great. Not to mention the awesome musical score and sound effects.

A couple minor things that could have been improved are the movement of your character which sometimes gets stuck in tight places and some of the levels are a little too simple and linear. Not that this is always bad because it prevents you from wandering around aimlessly which gets frustrating. The levels do progressively get much harder but I thought the first 2 to 3 missions were pretty simple. Overall though I HIGHLY recommend it.

Medal of honor is simply the best first-person shooter for the Playstation today.I mean,how many games are there where you can go around and mindlessly shoot Nazis?Not many,eh?Even though you don't just walk around.That's a death wish.You need to invole a little steath.That's where the variety comes in.You have to go deep into Nazi territory in disguise more than once.You'll also get to use weapons such as a silenced pistol and a sniper rifle to take out your enemies quickly,silently,and from a distance.The multiplayer levels are a little small,though.But still,I seriously recomend this game to anyone who's just looking for a little fun,or to a die-hard gamer.
