Slow-paced, but quite realistic

This game is quite well done, but I did not enjoy playing it because it is so slow-paced.
Gameplay: In the game's campaign mode, you have two teams with 3 members in each. There are 15 missions you have to complete, and three different difficulty settings. There is nightvision, and lots of different weapons. The problem I found with this game, is it is way too slow. You spend a lot of time just running around, and not actually shooting anyone, which I find boring. I have not played it on LIVE, but that may make it better.
Graphics: THe graphics were a huge dissapointment, especially on the XBOX which is supposed to have superior graphics to the other systems.
Sound:THe sound is quite excellent, but sound alone is not something to buy a game on.
Replay Value: I think this game might have pretty good replay value, but I can't say because I haven't had it that long. The capability of playing it on XBOX LIVE will definently add to this replay value, but doing the same missions again and again could get boring.
Overall: I was disappointed with this game, but that is probably because I'm not a fan of slower games. If you are someone that really likes something very realistic to the military and don't care that there isn't much shooting involved, this game is probably for you. If you don't like slow games, or games with little action, I wouldn't reccomend it, but you can always rent it to try it out. I hope this helped you out.

This game isn't meant to be played like Unreal or HALO ... this game is intented to simulate a more realistic approach to special ops based missions. Our special ops aren't known for running as fast as they can into an enemy camp shooting their guns in the air like cowboys our West; as you would in Unreal in an attempt to shoot everything, everywhere.
If played correctly, the game draws you in as you develop your own strategies of assault for each type of mission ... my neighbor (a police officer with some tactical training) and I play this game often, working as a team against the computer. We have found ourselves holding our breaths while setting up a sniper shot or leading with the rifleman into an unprotected area -- only to have our heart thump as we made a mistake -- being ambushed by the enemies.
The graphics are good, the team play is great, the strategy is the best I've played, and even the sound effects are great -- it even simulates muffled hearing after a grenade blast.
If you're into mindless racing and fragging -- this isn't the game for you. However, if you are into fairly fast paced action games (this is still a 1st person shooter) that rely on strategy and patience; this game is incredible. This has to be one of the closest games out that rely on real world tactical strategies; like "cutting the pie", etc.
I've rented this a number of times and now buying it.
good but...

Let me start by saying this is a beautiful game to look at but for me that is about it. The thing about Ghost Recon is I am sure it is at the top of alot of peoples game lists just not mine. I think people should really know what type of game this is before buying it. Ghost Recon is a hardcore strategy game. This is fine but it is not a true FPS. This game relys much much much more on strategy based attacks and info gathering. Like I said this is fine but I think when most people think of FPS's they think Halo. In no way is this game like Halo. You will not encounter vast squads of enemies charging you and you sure wont be able to take 30 hits to the chest like in most FPS's. Like I said i'm sure some people like that much better just not me. I just want people to know what kind of game they are purchasing before picking this up. See below.
Pick this game up if:
you like strategy based fps
you like (much) slower paced fps scenarios
you prefer stealth/recon over balls out death charges
Do not pick up if:
you like fast paced gun blazing first shooter
you like less challenging point a to point b level set ups
you like a more relaxed ammo/health restrictions
Like I said this game is probally amzing for a lot of people. Just don't be fooled by it being a FPS. It is much more of a strategy recon game.
VERY disappointed

So I bought my X Box last year JUST for this game. I waited and waited and waited. Original release date was March of 2002 and they kept pushing it back. Finally was releasd last week and when I finally got it...it just plain [inhales with force]. Graphics I give a 5 stars. Playability I give 1 star. First person view [inhales with force]. Online play slow and lagging. Just not a very good game. I've been playing SOCOM: Navy Seals on PS2 and was expecting somthing along the lines of this game. Boy was I wrong. UBI needs to look at how SOCOM was made and make serious changes to the Tom Clancey game lineup. Save your money and get Unreal Championship or Splinter Cell for X Box or SOCOM: Navy Seals for PS2.
Ghost Recon will be an XBox hit

The multiplayer capabilities of Ghost Recon on the PC made it intense. It will be insane on the Xbox with the communicator headset!
Game of the Year, again!

Tom Clancy's detail about weapons and tactical maneuvers made Ghost Recon the PC "Game of the Year" according to the magazines. This should be a great game for the Xbox.
Not for the Unreal types

Ghost Recon, as has been mentioned in reviews here before, is not for the run-and-gun players out there. While you may use some strategy with those games, it is absolutely necessary to strategize in Ghost Recon simply for survival.
First, the single player campaign. And "campaign" is really the only word to describe it. You begin your mission in the republic of Georgia. The story is very gripping because you realize that something like this could actually happen. So you are instantly engrossed in the game. You progress thru a number of missions (roughly 15). Something that sets this game apart from the Rainbow Six games is the character-building process. As someone returns from battle, they get an additional skill point to spend on one of four skills: leadership, weapons, endurance, or stealth. This makes it even more imperative that you not lose a soldier, because if you have used that one soldier on all of your missions, and they have all of your skill points, losing them makes the remainder of the game very rough. Another very good reason for playing the campaign (other than just because it's so engrossing and fun) is to unlock weapons, game types, and maps for the multiplayer action.
Xbox Live is where Ghost Recon really shines. I really enjoyed the single player campaign, and in fact still go back to it, if only to unlock more items. But to play on a network with other people, communicating by voice, is simply incredible. To work together to formulate and then carry out a plan is mind-blowing compared to other games out there today. I played Counter Strike for a while, but there were too many people who wanted to work alone and not in a team environment. But with the voice communication now, it's so amazing! I really can't emphasize enough how great this functionality is. You can plan your strategy, alert your teammates to the presence of the enemy, etc. The possibilities are truly endless.
The only reason I didn't give this a 5-star rating is because of some issues with Live play. There are some people out there who should not be hosting because of their connection speeds. But once you find some good hosts, you simply add them to your Friends list and look for them to be online. Once you have a nice Friends list built up, the game becomes even more fun because you play with the same group a lot, becoming familiar with one another's strategies, etc.
Fun if you're patience and don't mind staring for hours ....

As a former Marine, I looked forward to applying what I learned in the military to this simulation especially since I'm a big fan of Clancy's novels. The missions start with briefings and insertion into the drop site. How they got the team to the site isn't shown (Transporters??). I control two 3-man teams, Alpha and Bravo. Before the mission begins I go to the Dossier Room to set up your team. I assign a sniper and machine gunner to each squad since they are going to be sepearated. The game is realistic but takes a great deal of time to complete a mission. I advise saving games at each small milestone to reduce the frustration factor. The tank weapon can only be fire in kneeling and standing position and most be reloacded after each shot. This explains the freezing problem. Here's the cons and these are big ones in my book. Although the AI team members communciates with you such as they've sighted enemy. They don't give enemy positions left right etc. You can't call for your gunner to lay down fire to cover for the asaulting squad. You have to do it yourself. The squads are bunched together a lot making it easy for all to be killed by a single grenade. Squad have formations when on patrol such as Wedge, Echolon Left, Echolon Right etc. Just a running mob. The snipers don't cover for the men doing the assaulting a position and must be manual controled by you. And the biggest of them all - the graphics. Yes the graphics are good but the enemy ARE difficult to locate even swiping side to side visually. You can be shot at several times before seeing a muzzel flash if at all. The enemy indicator is sometimes wrong and I have on many occasions had enemy standing 3 feet away from me shooting. The problem is sound and peripheral vision. I need surround sound to hear where the shots are coming from and well 3-d TV to look out the corner of my eye. Also, you don't get a radio operator to call base for updates or support. Your men can be wounded and killed even after the mission is over so be careful using your best men. Again, the enemy are very difficult to locate and I have on occasion shot tree tops thinking enemy were on the ridge. My eyes on many occasions were sore because of staring at the screen looking for movement in the brush. The snipers aren't doing their job except on the ending credits when a sniper saved a soldier escorting prisoners from an enemy sniper. Brought a tear to my eye. The graphics may be to blame since the grass seems to grow as I move forward. The best missions are the airfield and urban combat. This is not a shoot em up game like Counter Strike. So don't even think you can do a "Rambo" here.
In keeping with the Tom Clancy legacy...

GREAT game. To make it easier I will break it down by category for easy reference.
GRAPHICS: Very smooth and fluid, though the game was a little "dark". One touch night vision solved any problems created by this at night. About 90% of the game is spent outside, so the graphics don't tend to "jump" like in inside environments.
AUDIO: Nice, but not great. Weapon sounds were fairly accurate, but environmental sounds left a little to be desired. They worked well with surround sound, though. This made it easier to pinpoint enemy shooters. One cool feature is when a grenade or rocket is used, you actually lose hearing for a few seconds. Been there, done that.
CHARACTERS: As usual, you have a choice between base soldiers and super duper soldiers you earn throughout the game. Good thing is that the earned soldiers will lead a team better while you are elsewhere, while base soldiers are dumb as rocks. Bad thing is when they get waxed, their gone for good.
WEAPONS: Great weapons, but they must be earned throughout the game. ...each character came with a certain kit of equipment, which usually consisted of one, maybe two possible main weapons and a side arm. No mixing and matching. ...deploying a rocket launcher is PAINFULLY slow and can be tricky in the middle of a conflict. One thing I might note is that unlike other games, the grenade blasts are VERY realistic. You can't just drop one a few feet away and cruise through unscathed.
GAMEPLAY: Very realistic. The planning process is a bit less involved than in other games (i.e. Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear). But now the planning in more on the spot, and can be changed while in play. Such as escalating rules of engagement and in-game routing. A cool feature was being able to switch between different members of the teams. This is good when Bravo team is pinned down and you don't trust the system to get them out of it.
ENEMIES: Good shots close up, not good snipers. They don't do a lot of thinking, they mostly stick to two man roving guards and stationary guard posts. Once their engaged, they pretty much stay put until you can get to them. If you are seen, though, they will pursue. Watch your back.
To conclude, this game is excellent, and I was not disappointed with the latest installment of the Tom Clancy series of games.
Awesome!

Ghost Recon is a phenomenal game and is now my favorite game of all time. It is a first person shooter perspective, but you control five other teammates. Your squad is broken down into two three man teams. At the beginning of a mission you decide if you want riflemen, support (heavy machine gun), demolitions, or snipers on your squad. Once in the game you direct the men where to go. If the soldier you are controlling is in Alpha, they will follow your lead all the time. The Bravo soldiers will go on their own and do what you directed them to. You can split up the squad, or keep all six together. If you need a different perspective you can take over control of any of the six soldiers.
So this is a thinking man's shooter, and the balance between strategy and intense firefight action is perfect. I love the urban warfare scenarios where you fight in alleys and go room to room clearing a building. Very intense, and much harder than outdoor warfare. Expect lots of casualties.
The graphics are really good, and the game has great replay value.
