Some let downs, but...

Ok, first of all this game was WAY TOO OVER-HYPED. However, FABLE IS STILL TOTALLY AWESOME! Yeah, it could have been a little deeper, but it's still very fun! Here's some highlights...

GOOD:
Superb graphics
Deep character development
Awesome combat mechanics
Tons of cool stuff to do in Albion... Total freedom
Lots of humor
Totally addictive
Many crusty old RPG clichés are thrown out
Fantastic musical score

BAD:
Not enough enemy types
Main quest runs a bit shorter than most RPGs
Story isn't the most interesting
A few more spells wouldn't hurt

The UGLY:
Some frame rate slowdown

Molyneux has outdone himself.

Dear God. It is the best game I've seen. Ever. Be a creep. Grow horns. Kill kids. Sacrifice people to the dark god. Nobody will like you, but who gives a troll? Or, you can save people from beasts. Start glowing with a halo. Be a nice guy. Kids will want to be like you when they grow up. Everyone loves you. Nice. Be normal. Marry a lady, and have kids that are demons like you if you've got the horns, or little angels in your resemblance if you're glowing. Be truly odd and marry a man. Wonder why Molyneux added that bit. You can also change by skills. Simple sword slashing, and you'll have bulging muscles in no time. Arrows your game? Good-bye little weakling, hello Robin Hood. And lastly, magic appealing? Soon you'll be going Merlin on everyone.

Molyneux deserves money. Lots of money. Good night, fellow gamers.

Peter Molyneux has created arguably some of the best games of all time. Naturaly, when news of his latest brainchild Fable was released, a lot of people sat on the edge of their seats. Although most people complain that Fable did not live up to Molyneux's hype, they forget as a game designer its also his job to hype whatever product he's working on. Fable falls short of best RPG ever but introduces molyneux's "god" characteristics into a stable and imaginative game.

From the very beginning, Fable offers great graphics. The player will be pulled into an imaginative world of good and bad. Everything is well designed to resemble fairy tales and -fables. Particle effects are very well executed and animations are smooth and rarely choppy.

The musical score of Fable offers an authentic fairy tale atmosphere. Different places give you different tunes based on the moods whether its a creepy little graveyard or a quaint old town. Sound effects all sound good and the voice acting is great.

The gameplay is based on a cross between a fairy tale story and a molyneux "god game." Players will experience the life of a young boy to an adolecent and onward to adulthood. Fable's combat system offers a pretty standard hack and slash feel, but falls short of using a good control scheme. During the thick of battle it is easy to accidentally use the wrong spell or switch spells you want for spells you don't need. Another problem of the combat system is the lock feature. At times the lock finds an enemy way off in the middle of nowhere, leaving the player at the mercy of enemies in front of them. Once an enemy is killed, the lock remains on the corpse for some reason, instead of grabbing onto the nearest live enemy.

Aside from minor combat problems that cause big irritations, Fable is a good world to explore. There is always something to do even after beating the main missions. Players can continually change their avatar's appearence, even weight and build. Properties can be baught and sold or rented out, people are still roaming around and waiting for interaction and so on. Although I don't consider Fable to have good replay value, it has continual play value. Even after beating the main missions, my character is collecting tons of rent and making money day in day out. As well as exploring towns and talking to NPCs. Between sociallizing with NPC's, managing properitary ownerships and trading after the main missions, Fable is a worth while buy.

With the features and let downs tallied, Fable puts forth a worthy effort to muscle its way into the RPG scene. It may not be the greatest of all time but stands tall among the rest.

Short but Sweet...

This is one of those games that really has a ton of hype built up around it for years while it is being developed and then when it finally comes out people are disappointed. I kept my expectations relatively low so I had a good time with it while it lasted. Unfortunately I probably won't be playing it again unless I get very bored and decide to go the other route with the whole good/evil thing. It was fun overall although a few of the missions got on my nerves for repetiveness or just being boring. The story was pretty mediocre as well, but the games main flaw is its shallow length which brings its score down. I would recommend this to people if you are really into action/rpgs but I would wait until the price goes down or get it if its on sale like I did.

Lots to See and Do, But Has a VERY Lackluster Ending.....

One of the few shortcomings of the Xbox system was its lack of RPGs to compete against the Final Fantasy titles showcased by other systems. Fable was promised to be a revolutionary RPG that would take interactivity with computer controlled characters and environment to new levels. It didn't quite live up to the original expectations that were set, but Fable is still a lot of fun.

The basic premise behind Fable is that you guide a Hero from childhood to fame and fortune. You can choose to be good or evil, and the choices will change everything from people's reactions to you to your physical appearance. You can also choose what type of adventurer you will be by how you distribute your experience points. Put points heavily into Agility and you'll be a rogue. Put more points into Magic than anything else, and you'll be given the title of a mage.

One of the best features is your statistics subscreen, which tracks just about everything you do. On this screen you can see the number of: people you've killed, times you've gotten drunk, wives you have, times divorced, and much more.

The only noticeable shortcomings are the relatively short time that it takes to beat the game (a pro could get through in 10-15 hours), and the extremely short ending. Even if you can beat the game in 10 hours, you should be rewarded with more than a 30 second ending.

A little more interactivity and more quests would take Fable to 5-stars. However, it is still a fun game with a good bit of replayability. Definitely worth a purchase.

Dissapointed

After hearing and reading about how Fable was to be a huge step up from Morrowind, I pre-ordered it and waited anxiously. I was at a GameStop and managed to get mine along with six to eight other lucky people on the evening of the fourteenth instead of the fifteenth. I proceeded to take care of more important issues such as LIFE and put the game on hold until about seven that night. When I did get home and finally started the game, I was up until three a.m. playing. I had the next couple of days off from work, so I played Fable almost all of the 15th and 16th. That is, until I beat it on the afternoon of the 16th with under 13 hours of total gameplay and not really that strong of a character. While the game was progressing, I enjoyed the graphics, combat and to a lesser extent, the openness. This game is FAR from as open as Morrowind although you can deviate from the main quests and do pretty much as you please. However, where Morrowind excelled over Fable is the fact that there literally was no limit (other than my characters level) to what I could do. If I wanted to jump from roof to roof in Balmora then I could do it. In Fable, the character is limited to pretty much staying on the path to your next quest. The only deviations you can really take are when you come up to a town. In town you can spend as much time as you want talking, drinking (then puking), seducing women, get married, kick some chickens, digging up graves, buy a house or just about anything else, selling almost anything you have and pretty much anything that doesn't have to do with jumping. I pretty much skipped most of the side quests and stumbled through the main quest without really trying to and before I knew it, the credits were rolling. At least Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic took me a couple of months and I still haven't beat Morrowind even though I bought that when it first came out. The fact that it took me under 13 hours of total gameplay to beat Fable is a MAJOR dissapointment to the point I am actually MAD I spent the fifty bucks for it. When it ended, it ENDED, not like Morrowind where although the main quest has ended, the game itself continues, the credits rolled and then it took me back to the main menu. The only saving grace I have is I did none of the side quests so I'm going back through and attempting those for a while. Chances are in a couple of weeks, I'll be trading this in on my pre-order of Halo 2.

Bottom Line: RENT, don't buy, you'll have it easily beaten by the time you have to take it back.

Huge disappointment

It was clear to me after about two hours of gameplay that I had wasted my money. I will admit that I am biased toward a more nonlinear plot but honestly that is what Fable was supposed to offer. It does not count as a choice if you can merely do the menial task of killing something one of two ways.
The only other opportunities for one to stray from the very basic plot line was to woo some lucky (or unlucky, I suppose) lady or lad. This engine was definitely somewhat creative. However, it becomes apparent that the sole purpose of this is to draw in teens via sex appeal. Not only is this in bad taste, it really isn't that interesting.
In short: the game boils down to killing pirates in a plethora of ways and then seeking out someone to get intimate with. It says something about a game when its most exciting moment is when the screen goes dark and a you hear some sort of moaning. At least that drowned out the groaning I am doing because of my wasted money. I should have bought a frisbee and went and played some frolf instead.

Great but not as great as it could be

If this game was not hyped as much as it was it would be wonderful. It is kind of like combining Morrowind and The Sims, but it's not as in-depth as either one. My major beef with this game is its legnth. If it was on the PC it would definitely have an expansion pack coming out in a few months. The other beef that everyone has is that it doesn't live up to its hype, what videogame ever does?

Could have been better

The game is fun. Xbox has the fad of RPGs where you can choose your fate. The game play is fun. The game control is great. Building up your character's attributes system is simple and to the point. Some of the story lines could have been better. Overall it's a great game to play.

The only complaint I have is the endings to the game. I know it has more than one ending and I've done all the endings. A painting in the guild chamber and a short narration. For all the endings. What the Heck???

Do play this game. It is full of adventure. In otherwords, I would like to see a sequel.

Fable - Fun but short

This is a fun game but it has 3 very big draw backs that if I had known about, I would have waiting to buy the game until the price dropped.

1) Screen load times - Each screen you play on is very limited. If you want to walk from one part of the world to another, you will have to wait through half a dozen or more "screen loading" windows.
2) The game is very short. I played all but one of the side quests and still finished the game in a few days, playing only a few hours a day.
3) While you do have some fredom to move around. This game is basically played on rails.
