This game is one of two reasons to buy an N64. It's excellent multiplayer, with enough shortcuts and tricks to perfect that's it's also a great solo game. If you have an N64 and you don't have this game, then you should stop wasting your time and go out and buy it. You could play the other games, but they are terrible...

Of all the goofy racers on the Nintendo 64, Mario Kart is still the best. If you were a fan of the SNES version, then this should be heaven for you. Four players with a race mode and battle mode. Can you have too much good? The tracks are all original and challenging. Great graphics, nice sound, and easy control. The best part about racing games like this is the ability to use weapons. Though weapons are completely random and unforgiving, this makes the game so much more interesting, competitive, and fun to play with others. Mario Kart could have used some more characters and tracks, but it's still a great game with what it has. This is one of the few games which I revert back to when company's over.

When I first got a Nintendo 64, I only could afford one game. So I chose Mario Kart 64 since I had played Super Mario Kart for Super Nintendo before and loved it. I played and played and played some more. It was my first game and it still is my best. It is very original. No wonder they sold over 1 million copies. I give this game 5 stars. Try it. You won't regret it.

When debating the best racing video games of all time, it would be enigmatic, better yet, foolish, to not bring up any of the Mario Kart classics, especially this one.

Nintendo blessed the console gaming kingdom with it's original for the Super NES in the early 90's, probably the greatest Super NES title in it's history, aside from the original Sim City and it's one and only Zelda release (both Nintendo products by the way). In the mid 90's, Nintendo made possible the impossible, by creating an even better successor, Mario Kart 64.

Graphics - 9/10

For the N64 and it's format, good luck coming across a game with better graphics. Nintendo's genius design of the character's features and courses were simply superb.

Finger Friendly - 10/10

Aside from Golden Eye 64, no game for the N64 has more dominant controls. From the 50cc class, to the intense battle mode feature, one couldn't ask for a smoother ride.

Ear Pleasing - 7/10

Nice, better than your average N64 title, but easily could have been better. The more highlighted flaw would be the actual music for the courses. The character sounds were done fairly nicely, as well as the use of the items.

Theme/Fun - 10/10

If you have competitive players around, take a vacation, it's going to be awhile. It doesn't matter if you're eight, or eighty, one can't help but fall in love with the entertainment Mario Kart 64 provides.

Storyline - 7/10

Nothing really new here. Just one new character, Wario. There really isn't a detailed story for any of the characters, which isn't expected. Afterall, this is a racing game, not Final Fantasy VII.

Freshness - 9/10

For years, millions awaited this release, and it sure as hell didn't disappoint. Well worth the wait. Until this title was released, was there really any racing game worth playing for the N64? Didn't think so. Easily, Mario Kart 64 was a huge breath of fresh air for N64 gamers worldwide.

Challenge - 6/10

Easily, the game's greatest flaw. The original Mario Kart was twice as challenging on the 150cc class. My grandma can win the N64 version with her false teeth. No, really though, Nintendo made a mistake of making this more of a "kids" game, as opposed to being as challenging, or even more challenging than it's original.

Multiplayer - 10/10

Minus Golden Eye 64, you won't find a better N64 game with more potential with the multiplayer aspect. If you have three or four players around, we're talking about hours and hours of your life down the drain. I hear the new Mario Kart for the Gamecube will have the ability to play up to ALL EIGHT racers AT THE SAME TIME!

Replay Value - 8/10

Greatly depends on who's around to participate. You have competition, you have exceptional replay value from this game. You playing solo, make plans later in the day, you'll need them.

Overall - 9/10

Golden Eye 64, and maybe Zelda Ocarina of Time, are the only titles I can name better than Mario Kart 64 for this console. If you're reading this, you more than likely already own this classic, so all I've told you is probably nothing new to you, but if you don't own this, buy it, used or new, it's worth every penny you'll pay for it.

Best Racer out There

Wow. Mario Kart is the best racer. Here is my chart:

Pros"

1. Good tracks
2. Good sound
3. Very fun
4. Great music

Cons:

1. Graphics are fair.

This game is awsome. In every track, you get weapons such as shells, shrinking stuff, slippery bananas, and more. There are many multiplayer modes, such as Single Race, and Battle. In battle mode you are in an arena and you have to defeat your player by hitting him with weapons.

The tracks are spectacular. They are the best, ranging from the easy 'Luigi's Raceway' to the hard 'Yoshi Valley' to the super hard 'Rainbow road'.

You can pick characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, DK, Bowser, Toad, Yoshi, and more. Each character/racer has they're own characteristics.

This game is a must-have for everyone. Buy it now, because it is worth all the money. Buy it! It is the best racing game EVER.

Some of the Most Fun You'll Ever Have...& it's a Video Game!

It's a shame they don't make Nintendo 64 games anymore, because they flat-out don't make games like them anymore! "Mario Kart 64" is one of the oldest and best-loved video games my family owns. Everyone plays it and enjoys it, including the parents. I'm 16 and have loved it for years. We still play it often. You can race with up to 3 other people, or race with the computer characters and/or other players. You've got a choice among 8 different racers, each with its advantages and disadvantages, but each pretty good in his/her own right. I like Peach myself; she's fast, she maneuvers well, and is of medium weight. The heavy guys, like Bowser or Donkey Kong, are slow and difficult to steer, but they're strong and will knock back anyone who runs into them (or vice versa.) But the lightweights like Toad or Yoshi, while fast, get knocked about and fly off-course easily. Then there are those like Mario and Luigi who are just plain in the middle.

Picking up items to use against other racers or for yourself is one of the neat features. Battling in one of four areas is another. Time trials, trophies, and other cool additions make the game a ton of fun. But the concept is simple: place at least 4th out of 8 racers in each course! And the courses are excellent. Here's the breakdown:

Luigi Raceway. Extremely easy and kinda boring, this course is very short and basic.
Moo Moo Farm. A cute, short, easy course with adorable cows and little moles that pop out of the ground--watch out!
Koopa Troopa Beach. I like this beach, with its crabs and water and palm trees and ramps.
Kalimari desert. A barren wasteland with a few cacti and some billboards. Have fun goofing off by making Peach drive repeatedly into the train and hearing her scream. Or make any driver run from it.
Toad Turnpike. An annoying "highway" course that looks cool but is difficult to drive on; hitting several cars per race is almost inevitable.
Frappe Snowland. One of the best courses in the game! This awesome winter wonderland is complete with snow, ice, and snowmen.
Choco Mountain. Another favorite. Yummy chocolate boulders fall from this brown Hershey mountainous course.
Mario Raceway. Full of grass, mushrooms, and sharp turns, this course is cool but can be hard.
Wario Raceway. A long, dull course full of dirt, arrows, and hills. Not hard but boring.
Sherbet Land. Possibly the best (and definitely the coolest) of the courses, this one is challenging but far from impossible; those precious penguins rock. Imagine being there!
Royal Raceway. A real pain-in-the-butt course, this one knocks you into the water or the side of the mountain as often as it can--even when you steer in another direction. Watch out.
Bowser's Castle. Scary as anything, this one involves some freaky moving rocks with faces (like those from the Mario game), and lava.
DK's Jungle Parkway. Boats, waterfalls, and jungly-type trees characterize this one. Go off course and get hit with coconuts.
Yoshi's Valley. This one is weird because you can choose any number of directions, and no one can tell who's winning until all three laps are done.
Banshee Boardwalk. Another of the favorites, this one has a totally wicked awesome giant red fish who leaps over the haunted, abandoned boardwalk. It also offers a scary old concrete building, ghosts, and some gnarly curves and turns.
Rainbow Road. Exceedingly long but exceedingly beautiful, Rainbow Road stretches through the Universe for miles. A never-ending gate of stars ensures that you won't fall too often, but watch for the chained doggie things! Look for the neon signs in the sky--you'll have plenty of time to stare at 'em.

Back when I was in middle school and was scooping up every possible game with Mario's name attached to it (hey, anyone remember Mario Paint?), the original version of Super Mario Kart was my favorite game. When I saw that there was a new version of the game for the N64 years later, I was excited and knew I had to try it. I later bought a used copy from a video rental store and have never regretted it. It's simply one of the most fun games of all time, and I'm still hooked on it eight years after it originally came out. I've played all the courses hundreds of times (including Special Cup), but I never get tired of it. My favorite part of this game is all the wacky items you can use. They kept most of the really cool ones from the original game (like lightning bolts, invincibility stars and ghosts to steal others' items) and added some new ones (like the spiny shell). One factor in this game that was a vast improvement on the original: it's less predictable. In the original game, computerized opponents pretty much all traveled in the same path around each track, and each character had special individual attacks: i.e. Yoshi threw eggs, Donkey Kong threw banana peels, Mario and Luigi could become invincible at will, etc. In this version, the tracks are bigger and the computerized opponents are "smarter" - they don't always move in the same path. The graphics may be rather plain-looking by today's standards, but in 1996, they were stunning. (I especially like the snow-covered tracks and Rainbow Road!) Most of the character voices are funny (especially Luigi's "Mamma mi-a-a-a-ahhh..." and Yoshi's squeal when he hits a banana peel), but some (i.e. anything that comes out of Toad's mouth and Mario's "Yeah, ha-ha-ha!!!!") grate on your nerves after a while. Small flaws, though, in what is otherwise a very fun and addictive game. Haven't played the newest version for the GameCube yet but am looking forward to it!
