We have had this game for a couple of years and really enjoy it as a family. The ability to play with 1 to 4 players makes it much more enjoyable than many other games. Most of us are competitive at it and no one completely dominates the play. Having the battle option really adds when we get tired of playing the race games.

The original Mario Kart back on the SNES was a classic and wisely, Nintendo have decided to keep much of the gameplay intact for this version. There have been some changes though, in what seems to be an attempt to keep the game fresh and to allow it to use the full power of the N64. The question is, did the game really need that much work when it was already a winning formula. Actually, most of what Nintendo have done works extremely well. The characters hang together well and single player is now generally more fun. Unlike in the original game, where computer characters had an unlimited supply of there own weapons putting you at a disadvantage, they now pick up weapons from the track just like you, putting an end to frustrating moments from the original where Mario would activate his invicibility just before the finish line and zoom past you leading to lots of swearing and the probable spiking of your joypad into the floor. The bottom line is that the single player game is now all down to skill which does make the game slightly easier in the long run but, ultimately, more satisfying and with four cups and three skill levels, it's not going to be a game you finish in a hurry anyway. Multiplayer though is where the game really comes into it's own. This is probably the game that's seen the most amount of multiplayer action since I bought it and four player racing can't be beaten. With twenty tracks and the option of racing variations on all the courses when you've finished the one-player mode and this is one game you'll never tire off. The only area in which it falls down is the multiplayer battle mode. This was one of the best features of the original but the new courses just don't seem to work. A real shame as otherwise, this would have been a five star game. That aside however, there's not many racing games that are more fun than this.

This game was the sole reason I even purchased an N64 system, after having not played videogames since the Sega Genesis was big news! I've bought other games, but none could ever measure up to the sheer fun and playability time after time in this game. I wish game developers and reviewers could get it together and realize that playability is the key to making a game successful and fun--they should all study a group of four people playing Mario Kart and take good notes. MarioKart is a title for everyone to enjoy--It's easy to learn and very addicting. Be sure you have 4 controllers, for the four player racing and battle modes are by far the most fun, you're denying yourself the expereince by playing solo. Pick up this title and 4 controllers--forget the rest of the crap that passes for games on this system. I await MarioKart II!!!

At first when you try this game it seems fun. There is a big improvement on the origional. But after you run through the game once or twice the game starts getting boring. Nothing ever changes. I suggest saving your money for a better game.
This game is great for the little guys, a must have!
