This game is pretty darn easy. I beat most of the tracks with only a rental. It's not near as tough as the SNES version. Heck, the SNES version of Rainbow Road had no walls around the track and the track was thin to boot. Rainbow Road is a cakewalk on this one. Wide the whole way with walls all around. Too darn easy. However, there is a monster shortcut that's very dangerous to go for if you want to make things interesting.
Even though it was too easy, I bought the game anyway. It's fun to beat the heck out of these computer controlled suckers. Plus I really like the game's ending.
There is one hard level, the one with all of the traffic in the extra mode. It can be very frustrating if you make a mistake, because you get run over again and again and again. It usually takes away any hope of recovery.
The most significant improvement over the SNES version is the time trial mode. You can race a ghost of yourself after you've already completed the course. The ghost is only a recording of your previous performance, but it gives you a lot more motivation to beat your old time, I assure you.
I've never been into multiplayer modes, but if you're into that kind of thing, you'll REALLY love this game. Some multiplayer matches can go on for a LONG time, since the levels are so well-designed.
I don't have this version, BUT i had the SNES version.

Greatest game ever invented? The answer to that question, sir or madam, is YES. Seriously, I lost my virginity to this game. It was a bet...that's all I'll say about that.

This is a kid friendly racing game. Many are big turn offs with sexual, and violent usage.
The various levels, and terrain, are fun to explore, with simpler navigation. Each area brings gamers new, and exciting obstacle challenges. Users can chose which character they would like to be. Adding a special pack, sold separately, gives players a feeling of riding one of these cars. A unique factor when a competitor goes off track they can go through water, and sand.
If I remember correctly, depending where you land you'll notice the slowing of your racer. In water you'll see bubbles.
Both a con and a helper is to race against the program. In the bad it often wins, but in the good you can gain awareness on how the track goes, learning to avoid most problems, and use your tools to win!
A lot of fun, but some problems

Mario Kart 64 is a lot of fun, especially in multi-player. The graphics are dissapointing though. Your charectar has a 2.5D look instead of full 3D. The sense of speed is not great either, but the game lets you choose between a 50cc, 100cc, or 150cc engine. There are a lot of tracks in the game, and they are very detailed with a lot of colorful enviroments. If you want a great multi-player game, get this, but if your looking for a pure racing game avoid this.
One of the Best racing games of all time!

This game is a must have for any N64 owner. It is an interesting veiw at racing games. Now its innovative Idea is spreading. When I first got I was glued to my TV for hours, it was fun, addicting and a great party game. My favorite part of the game was the special items you get to use against the oppent to win. The best racing game i have ever played the multiplayer mode is great! You can battle or just race the other players in a versus mode. The Mario GP has 3 modes 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc. When you race the object is to get the most points which is great!

This is great kart/racing game! The graphics are a bit disappointing, but overall it cool! When some of my friends come over and they play, they're just trying to beat each other, they even punch each other to distract the other person! It's seems to be a very competitive game to them! I just love the Time Trial Mode, making a good time then taking hours to try to beat it again! It's challenging in it's own way!
Love it

This game is great. Keeps the Nintendo feel for racing but makes the driving better to handle. It is the perfect blend of serious racing and arcade.
It's the best.
