Love it!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This game some how combined the best elements of an RPG, FPS, and strategy game into a very deep, very involving game.
The levels and the objectives therin make sense for a society going down the tubes.
The level of NPC interaction is amazing! JC can talk to and question almost any character in the game.
This level of interaction comes at a cost, though. A full install of this game takes 750mb (I don't know where the 150mb on the box came from!) which a lot for a laptop user like me.
That leads me to my second point. This game will run reasonably well on a 8mb video card(my ATI RageMobility 128, to be specific), but I would reccomend a 16mb or better and lots of RAM.
...you really aught to grab a copy before GoTY Edition is all that's left.

DON'T BUY THIS GAME...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Don't buy this game unless you want to be absolutely absorbed and addicted. If you have a wife and family, I recommend you leave it to the bachelors. This spectacular game is so engrossing it's hard to stop playing. I've been up til 4 AM saying just one last stage before I go to bed.

Listed as an RPG...I prefer to call it a First Person Perspective Shooter with a great plot. You are half man half synthoid...and you are the only one who can save the world. You travel to New York City, Hong Kong, and Paris in your search for the answer.

You can chose different methods to play this game. You can go Rambo-style and take out all the enemies, or you can sneak in the dark shadows with very little enemy encounter. I chose a mix depending on my mood. If I was feeling like a postal worker, I made it a point to take out every enemy. If I wanted to experience a chill down my spine or two, I went the stealth-route. Both spectacularly fun.

PC Gamer named this 2000 GAME OF THE YEAR...I call it the GAME OF ALL TIME.

Warren Spector is a God!

Simply amazing. Warren Spector has made a masterpiece of a game. It sets new standards in the Action Roleplaying Genre. I cannot recommend this game more. It is and still remains my favourite computer game of all time. The levels are varies, ranging from secret Area 51 labs to the markets of a future Hong Kong. The things that immediately hits you is the sheer depth of the game. I remember at one time hearing two random people on a street holding a long philisophical conversation for about 10 minutes. The action is clever and consistently gives a choice in a play style. You can charge into a situatation but there is always an alternative. The plot is what however really drives this game. If you like a good plot on the same level as that of Baulder's Gate then this is your game. A beautiful conspiracy is slowly crafted around you as you become more and more immersed in the games world. I could write forever about this game.

Just buy it. It has redefined what gaming should be about.

New Type of RPG

This is a revolutionary new game. It is a new concept. This is an RPG through a first person view. Although on the outside it looks like another shoot-em-up game like Quake or Doom, it isn't. You can't go around blasting people with rocket launchers and never get hurt like in Quake of Doom because one or two shots and you die. If you fire a rocket launcher, the alarms go off and the turrets start to fire and it is the end.

There are many skills people can learn in this game which is what makes it an RPG. Everything from Swimming to Environmental Training (I still don't understand why someone would be a master in that) can be learned. The best part about this game is there are many ways to complete the mission. If you are a swimmer, you can take the sewers and take a covert approach. If you are a hacker (My favorite), you can hack into the computer system and disable the cameras and turrets. If you are a master in Medicine, go in and blow everything up then heal yourself. There are always many ways to complete every mission.

There are a few cons for the game. The main con was the graphics. The graphics are very good, but they take a very high chip. My computer is an average Pentium II and it struggled with this game. I had to make it a window because if I made it fullscreen it ran very slowly. I also had another problem. Sometimes it was very dark. Sometimes it ran fine, then it was dark. It isn't a big problem, but kind of annoying because the whole game is played at night.

Other than that this is a great game. I gave it 5 stars because of the storyline and compared to most games it did not have that many bad points. I urge people to buy it not only because it is a great game but because IT IS ONLY $..., WHICH IS A STEAL.

great story,action, and characters.

I am a big fan of FPS (first person shooters) and when i read about this game i thought back to half life, could this be another step up for this genre. After i played it i answered that question with two words Oh yeah! This game is the best action game there is and it's large enough, and challenging enough to keep you going for a while. I was playing this game for quite some time (a month and a half to be exact) before i got all the alternate routes figured out. It would've been shorter if work didn't intercede with my gaming time but i have to pay for my bills somehow right. The story involves two brothers, one being the veteran and the other being the rookie take a guess on which you'll be playing. Anyway you start off the game by wiping out the terroists that have taken the statue of libery. Now here's where this game sets it apart from most shooters. There are multiple ways to complete an objective either you can go in and kill everyone in the area or you can sneak by them and knock them out. I usually choose the second approach since it's more of a challenge that way rather than just start blowing things up, which gets old real fast. Once you complete your objectives you get a set number of experiance points which you can give to certain abilities such as sniping (my favorite) or other attributes like hacking or electronic bypassing. This gives the game maximum replayablity with all the choices you can make in the game, if you foul up a mission you continue on, you just change the attitudes of some characters you meet later. The only problem i have with this game is it has a slow start, but once you get past the first couple of misions it's a breeze the rest of the way, with a great story that twists and turns with every step you take, it's great gaming defintly a must have for any hardcore gamer.

Lost 2 months of productivity, but had a blast!

I am a Real Time Strategy (RTS) fan-Starcraft, WarCraft, Age of Empires. Deus Ex was the first game in the First Person Shooter genre I have tried. I was not dissapointed.

This amazing game lets you play the way you want. Do you want to blast your way through every encounter, making each puzzle a battle? Build up your rifle and heavy weapon skills and enahncer your ballistic protection augmentations. Or would you rather sneak around, hacking the computers to open the doors instead of blowing them off their hinges? Build up your electronics skills, and choose the stealth augmentation. Or maybe you would rather swim...

Every mission has multiple success paths, and several have multiple outcomes. The game has three endings, based on whether you trust the Illuminatii, the worldwide AI, or another group...

I have to tell you, I loved this game. I got nothing done at work for two months because if it. Please don't tell the boss.

When does the sequel come out?

I will take some time to explain a couple key elements to the game, and explain why you should play this unique, amazing game.

1: You play HOW you want to play:
-Silent and sneaky or violent, rambo style
-Close range or long range weaponry
-Primitive or extremely high-tech weapons
-High explosives or tranquilizer darts
-Computer hacking ability or being a master of lock picking

2: This game is not a First Person Shooter (FPS) the way we've ever seen on before.
-A similar game that was released recently is called Metal Gear Solid for PS2. However, this game for PC I think has a little more depth and possible creativity.

3: Replay value. Replay value is the best thing any game could possible have.
-The first time I played, I trained myself to be a master sniper/master hacker. I sat back, picked enemies off from a distance (or close range sniping) and the surviving enemies had a heck of a time trying to find me.
-The second time I played, I trained my pistol skills all the way to the max, and I could pick someone off sniperlike, using a silenced pistol. If I was in close quarters, I whipped out the trusty flamethrower to teach em who's boss.

....Trust me, this game is worth the money. I eagerly await the sequel, in production now.

a most excellent game

Deus Ex is one of those games that redefines the genre, playing it was a blast and the combination of RPG and FPS was incredible. The story, which is now getting more attention in games, was amazing, i would complete a stage and be too freaked out to play again... for about ten minutes or so. While sometimes the difficulty was incredible and limited ammo makes the game tedious near the end, the average gamer should not be deterred. The plot twists keep the player playing just to find out what happens next. Winner of the PCGamer Game of the Year, this is one game where your dollar will not be wasted.

One of the most memorable games ever

[...]. And after getting into the game this happy grin on my face would not go. This has to be one of the best PC Games ever. It has an intriguing story line and although the voice acting is a bit patchy the game keeps you interested the whole way though. The gameplay is absolutly awesome and the greatest part would just be the amount of ways 1 problem can be solved. The biggest problem with the game is its lousy framerates. Because its based on the Unreal Engine the game performance is not good on a non-voodoo card. I have a fast PC (Athlon 1Ghz, 256MB RAM, GeForce 2) and had to download drivers to just get the game running at a playable framerate. The graphics are good but if you dont have a VooDoo card then the framerate will suffer badly. Dont let me put u off on that. This is still one of my favourite games off all time, and my Favourite PC Game Ever (even beating Half Life!)
