One of the best computer games ever

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

I have been playing computer games for more than 20 years, and this is one of the best games that I have played. Many other reviewers have described the plot and the basics of gameplay, so I would like to highlight a couple of aspects that make this a stand-out game.

First and most importantly, there is almost never a single "right" way to accomplish a mission. It is usually possible to use brute force, stealth, high-tech skills, or some combination to accomplish your goals. The levels are very detailed, with lots of different characters, objects, alternate routes, and secret passages. In many cases, characters will respond to you differently and even provide you with different tools or information depending on the means that you use to accomplish a task. Even after re-playing this game from start to finish at least 10 times, I still stumble on new ways to accomplish missions, new character dialogues, and new areas or features that I had never discovered before.

Second, you have an remarkable degree of flexibility in the way that you customize your character as the game progresses. There are about a dozen different skills, including different weapons skills (pistols, rifles, explosives, heavy weapons), technical skills (lockpicking, electronics, computers), and miscellaneous skills (swimming, medicine). As the game progresses, you accumulate skill points, which you use to increase your proficiencies in whichever skills you want. The different skills give you different ways to accomplish missions, and they have a profound effect on the way you play the game. This is a game that requires some thinking; many of the missions require some initial reconaissance and the development of a good tactical plan, rather than simply rushing in with guns blazing. This is especially true on the game's higher difficulty levels. Often the first or most obvious solution is not necesarily the best.

There are, naturally, a couple of problems. First, I have tried this game out on several computers, including a brand new computer that is well beyond the recommended specs, and it is often somewhat choppy, even with the graphic details turned all the way down. There are quite a few on-line guides on ways to optimize the game's performance; you will probably need to consult these and do some fine-tuning to get it running at its best.

Second, although a minor point, the voice acting is so bad that it is actually funny, and some of the foreign accents (in Hong Kong and Paris, for example) are really a hoot.

Overall, this game goes so far beyond most of what is out there that you might find that it raises the bar for what you expect from games in the future. For example, I could never play half-life again after playing Deus Ex, because it just seemed so two-dimensional.

The best game I have played

I'm not a hard-core gamer, but I do like good shooters with stealth, character-building, and/or inventive plots. Deus Ex has all of these elements in full. The story carries the action well, but the true strength of the game is the flexible character skill development paired with the most open-ended, non-linear levels I've ever seen. Each mission has goals, but how you choose to achieve them -- sneaking through ducts or coming in the front door with the biggest gun you can find -- is entirely up to you. You will not experience the frustration common to other games in which you attempt a level over and over until the "right" solution is found. I have the highest hopes for the sequel.

Yes it will run on XP

Download the demo on download.com and give it a try first.
I tried the demo with a bit of skepticism but I was pleasantly suprised. Though I have been out of the gaming scene for about five years, I was sad to not be able to have a joystick in my hands -- too much fumbling around the keyboard during critical moments.

Anyway, I bought the game on ebay for under two bucks.

I have to Admit I was skeptical when I purchased this title. I have't Bought a computer game in a while and was disapointed at the last game that I purchased. As soon as I turned on this game I was drawn into a new world of excitement where I was making decisions that would shape the outcome of the entire world. This game will pull you in like a magnet and won't let you go. Your eyes will become red and swollen from hours of combat and investigative bliss. The graphics are stunning right down to the last detail of picking up your bosses candy bar off his desk and having him chew you out. The AI is cunning and is always trying to think what you are thinking. teenagers and adults alike will love this game because it provides entertainment as well as pushing your mind to the limit trying to get out of traps, breaking up conspriracys, and doing what you think will benefit others or you can be a merciless mercenary who weeds out the week for personal profit. You have the choice. With a huge arsenal of weaponry and gadgets at your disposal, you have the power to make a few changes. With smooth gameplay and an outstanding training program, This game will satisfy everyone from the hardcore gamer to the once a week online shopper. Bravo to Eidos interactive who brought the joy of gaming back to my household. Take a look and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Best mix of FPS and RPG yet

I instantly got addicted to this game. I enjoy the RPG/FPS genre and stick almost exclusively to it. Often I give up on games because I get into situations where I'm out of health or ammo, meet an enemy I can't kill because they're only killed by freezing (or something like that) and my character is a swordsman, need potions (hate majic games) or there weren't enough save game slots to get back to where I can plan better and recover.

This game covered all that. Plenty of health packs and other ways to recover. Plenty of weapons and ammo to be found as you increase in levels. You can get out of a bad situation and hide until the enemies think you've fled, and return to a safe area, regroup and hit them again.

You can open doors by knowing the code, picking the lock, or blowing it apart. All methods have varying results. You can kill an enemy via hand-to-hand, power (big gun) or try to snipe him from 1500 feet away (if you found the scope). If you don't have the skill(s), you just need to be closer. You increase health by medpacks, food, or med-bots throughout the game. You can also choose to augment your character to be self-healing.

Simply, the game is extremely challenging while at the same time not giving you any excuse not to continue through to the end.
The storyline is interesting as it flows, and presents multiple options (kill him/let him live, etc) which affect gameplay for a while, although it won't affect the ending.

There's just no downside to this game. Looking forward to DE2!

Awesome, kinda scary for after 9-11, involves terrorists.

One of the best games of all time

Deus Ex is one of those games that has become a legend, it has made history and it is more than deserving of the title "one of the best games of all time"

The game takes place in the year 2053 in a world on the verge of collapse; a world where terrorists operate openly, where mega corperations use more and more overt means of crushing the competition, where life is more rugged. Little does anyone know that a secret group is intentionally causing the chaos in an effort to destabilize the power structures of the various countries on earth in order to take over the world.

You play JC Denton, the second prototype for the next generation of super agent, augmented by nano technology, and JC works for UNATCO, a branch of the UN designed to fight terrorism. The game is full of plot twists and turns and nothing is as it seems. At one point Paul's brother admits he is working for the enemy, and shortly after, you find out the real enemy is a group called Majestic 12, which also controls the UN and UNATCO and you then join the resistance to fight the tyrannical organization and keep the world free. The game takes you to locales such as New York, Hong Kong, Paris, Vandenberg Air Force Base, a top secret labratory on the West Coast, on the ocean floor, and Area 51. gret efforts were taken to make the locations as authentic as possible.

The game's immersiveness and story are unmatched, and the way the game allows you to complete mission objectives in any order and any way possible is truly revolutionary. This is one of those games that will become a classic in years to come and it is already legendary. The graphics are very good; most people consider it drab however the graphics were made with realism in mind and there are many scenic parts. The sound effects are also top notch, and the voice acting is very good: true that some of it was bad, but not all of it. The game play is very good and suprisingly easy to adapt to given its complexity. The AI is also good; true, a bad will not notice a dead body of a fallen comrade, or use advanced tactics against you, but it is very good for its time.

The game was optimized for 3D FX Glide, however I had no problem rinnng it on a TNT2 in Direct 3D, and a patch came out which reduces the problem (although it does not completely fix it, you will still get much better framereates than before), and many modern systems, even low end modern systems will run it very good.

Good but buggy

Let me start out by saying this really is a GOOD game but it does suffer from some problems.

First off, it runs TERRIBLY in Direct3D UNLESS you download the patch, problem solved. Don't think you can get away with this either. I have a PIII800 with 128mb Ram and a 64mb GeForce card.

The AI is pretty terrible. Sometimes it does what it really should do and alot of times it doesn't. Sometimes a group of enemies will hear me and storm the room, other times an enemy will run around in a circle 5 feet in front of me allowing me to cap him to death. You can pick up dead bodies to hide them but most of the time the enemies just walk by their dead buddies and just assume he is taking a nap with a gaping head wound.

Another problem would be crashes. My first day playing I locked up 3 times (had to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get out). And also had 2 Fatal Errors.

Save games take up anywhere from 8mb to 30+ (and possibly even more).

Load times between areas is pretty bad, especially considering I have a decently powerful system. I couldn't imagine the length on anything less.

All that aside I really do enjoy the game...great story, pretty good graphics, and great sound effects. But I think System Shock 2 is a much better game by far, if you haven't played that yet I would suggest trying that first.

Poor A.I.

Everything about this game is great except the artificial intelligence. At least in Unreal (same engine)the enemies did flips and tricks. Here the soldiers often get stuck, ping pong back and forth in a very low tech (ancient tech) way. Then, all at once they turn into superman and become hyper-agile and quick. Then you die. Oh well, it doesn't happen so often that I advise not to buy this game. It is way cool, but the A.I is weak.
