The best of all genres!

This game combines RPG's, first-person shooters, action, adventure and puzzle genres into one amazing game. At the beginning the various augmentations and specializations can seem confusing, but play through the first mission (another interesting component - unlike other games, the first mission is neither easy or low-risk), and you'll find yourself upgrading like the pros. For those of you like me who like to explore every corner of their virtual world , then rejoice! What in the past yielded fruitless results will now get you extra exploration points, that go towards your specialization upgrades. As the specializations go, you can become a bad... napalm-throwing killing machine, or an elite hacker few systems can withstand. Or, you could decide to focus on your lockpicking skills, for when you really want to see what's behind that door. For the smokers out there, rejoice! Specialize in environmental and you'll be able to withstand nearly every possible toxin, poison and gas. (You'll also find many cigarettes during the course of your game)
I think though, what makes this game so compelling is how real the environment seems, and how free you are to do as you please. Along the way, you'll meet people who want to sell you items (some you want, others are junk). Want to buy some napalm, but don't have enough credits? (1 credit = 1 dollar) If you specialized in computers, just hack into an ATM and withdraw all the money. Or, if you specialized in melee weapons, pull a knife on the seller and raid his corpse. See a building you want to enter? You could take the front door, but is there a back door? Maybe a sewer pipe leads in. There are so many ways to complete your objectives that this game quickly becomes all-engrossing.
Finally, what this game has in spades is a brilliant, ever-twisting plotline, influenced by your events during the game. UNATCO is the righteous organization, dedicated to giving out the much-needed ambrosia vaccine to victims of the "Gray Death" - or is it? MJ-12 is completely separate of UNATCO, right? Is it? Just a suggestion for those who buy this game (buy it now!), during the course of the game read the stray newspapers and books lying around. They piece together a vibrant history of America, up until 2052. You'll learn how President Mead took power. You'll learn about the Order of Cincinnatus, formed in 1785 by George Washington to take over the government by force in case the flegdling democracy fell, and still a super-secretive group. (Is it even a gruop? Type "Order of Cincinnatus" into a search engine and find out!) Kudos to all the writers. Actually no, double kudos.

For gosh sakes, you've been reading this review for long enough. Go out and buy Deus Ex already!

An immersive Sci-Fi roleplaying game from Eidos and Warren Spector, Deus Ex is one of my all-time favorites. Combining roleplaying elements with FPS action and a great story to follow, of which you can influence the outcome of, Deus Ex has few rivals to date.

Political conspiracies, familiar turf, moral choices to make, gun battles to win, far away locales to visit...Deus Ex grabbed me and didn't let go until I finished it.

The game now has a multiplayer mode as well now and may be of interest to some.

Not bad but... not great.

I'm kinda stumped as to why everyone went so nuts over this game.
I found it kinda boring and repetitious, of course I was playing Max Payne at the same time which in my opinion blows this game away.
The first thing that bothered me was the system requirements just to get this game to look good, I'm running a PIII 933 with 256MB of DDR and a 64DDR Nvidia Geforce 2, and it still choked up in some areas unless I turned the graphic settings down.
Fortunately the game had some interesting concepts that kept me playing for a while but I eventually became bored and never finished the game.

Game Of The Year!

After years of production and hype, Deus Ex is finally here. Is it good? Oh yes! The gameplay is out of this world! Never before have I been so engrossed in a gaming world that seems to change all around me. At the start of the game, you get to chose an area to focus on. This could be a firearms expert, computer whiz a sneak etc. Each way can help you and get you through the game. Example- Your breaking into a lab to find the drug you need to prove that aliens exist. Its guarded by 4 men. Do you A- Shoot the guards and run in. B- Sneak through the ventilation shafts to get in. Or C- Crack into the system, tell the guards to get off duty, and open the door. These are all options for every mission, except there are over 10 each! The game is extremely long, not done yet, and has a story of espionage and conspiracies. The graphics look nice, and the other options will keep you playing for a long time. All in all, front runner with The Sims for game of the year.

The best!

This is the best first person shooter/rpg that I've played since Half-Life. I'm only half way through the first level and already I can tell I'm not going to be away from my computer very much. Forget Diablo II, order this game now. The longer you wait the more risk you take of having the plot line spoiled for you.

This is what I was waiting for and it finally came. When I finished System Shock 2 I was wanting more so I immediately went on the internet to look for System Shock 3. I didn't find SS3 but found something even better. Deus Ex just grabbed me with its plot. The first go around I went from 9 to 2 in the morning. Fighting off sleepiness to findout what happens next. Yup, its that good. The story is very imersive and what you do actually changes the outcome of the game. How many friends you will make and what will happen. I have to agree that without the cheats on its too hard. But it was an honest challenge for the first couple of missions, and then it was too hard to enjoy the plot.

The good: Exelent plot, great missions and voice acting, great replay value (play again)

The BAD: Graphics aren't quite top notch on lower end computers (ie.400MHz or below) will take 100hrs.+ to beat without cheats

Bottom line: Buy this game right now!

Inmensively inmersive

I had read a magazine's article about this game in which it said that this was a very good game, at first I didn't believe it. But when I got this game bundled with my sound card I got inmediately sucked by it.

At first glance, this game may look like a lousy copy of Metal Gear Solid, but don't be decieved! it has more than enough elements to stand on its own. The plot is very inmersive and add that to the richly detailed levels and you'll understand why it's so adictive; best of all, you'll never find yourself stuck and unable to go foward for there's ALWAYS more than one way to complete your objectives. The music is equaly good it keeps the tension on and on, and there's a lot of intrigue and paranoia during the game if you check the emails ar read the computer's advices, add that to the ability to customize your character in skills and augmentations, and you have a game that will fill every die-hard player.

Deus Ex. saw this game on the shelf of the videostore (of course) had never heard about it before( bought it cuz i liked the case). I think that this game is a revolution for future 3D shooting games. Now u can actually get thru an whole level without killing any1. before it was only running around and shooting 2 kill. but anyway i just had 2 write a little sumthing about this game cuz i just plain love this game. the first time i played it i sat for 17 hours. i just couldn` stop, always had 2 get a little further 2 see what would happen next, and i can tell u reading this that i had many surprises. this game has a bulletproof storyline, exellent music, a very cool main caracter and what i think is best is that the truth about his past unfolds a little. one2buy

Deus Ex is EXCELLENT. It is the first of its kind where there are multiple ways of doing things especially at the end where you have the choice of ruling the world with a power crazed machine, destroy the worlds economy putting the world back to the stone age, stop the machine (daedalus) and rule the world along side the triads or letting bob page join with daedalus and ultimatly destroying the entire world. The gameplay is brilliant where one mission leads into another without it ending and you starting each new mission with full life and ammo in Deus Ex you have to survive and find the necessary things you need to get on with the mission. This is probably the best game i have bought and it did not get as much credit as it should have done.

Deus Ex is one of the best games ever made. A very long and excellent single player gameplay with a great replay value. It has a great and lenghty story. Set in the future with the world in bad shape, There is poverty, famine, with martial law in almost all cities and a plague called grey death has broken out. You play J.C.Denton, who works in the unatco, an anti terrorist agency along with his brother paul and a few missions later you will find out what the agency really is. Besides a great story the script changes the way you play the game, Like in one mission you will be called to save a girl hostage, If you save her you will be rewarded, If you failed the game will continue it does not say "Mission Failure - Restart Level" ect like in other games. Deus Ex's level design is fantastic, You can go anywhere and do anything you want. All the objectives have more than three paths to complete. The graphics are not very good and the charecter animations are very ugly, but they are more than enough for the fantastic single player gameplay. I played Deus Ex on the Direct3D video mode and the game runs very smooth, The first version may be optimised only for 3dfx glide, but the latest version has a very good Direct3D support. I played it on Direct3D 800x600x32 with all detail set to high and without any trouble and the load times are very good. The bad things are the save games take large disk space and the AI is bad, Besides that it is the best game ever made and deserves the game of the year award. Get Deus Ex, It is the game of the future.
