Well deserving of praise and promise

Let me start with the bad news - very demanding on resources; the save games are HUGE, and the older systems crawl. Crashed very rarely though. Graphics intensive too.
But other than these minor details, an excellent game that redefines the first-person / role playing / strategy hybrid genre.
I had a blast - the scenery was immersive. I could appreciate the sharp echoes of drops of water in underground Paris catacombs, the brisk buffeting wind atop Hong Kong high rises, etc. A genuine globe-trotting techno-adventure.
Deus Ex presented many tight spots to me that needed strategy and even trickery to get past; I had to use quick save / load a lot! Definitely challenged my trigger happy Quake-derived methods of getting out of jams, simply cos you don't have that much fire power lying around.
But I really wish I had more rockets and grenades. Sigh. Those damn droids and robots really gave me a run for the money, and shotguns, etc were like pea shooters.
Anyway what really got me was the absolutely brilliant plot that runs through the whole game like a rich, diverse tapestry of ideas. The concept of world-domination, multinational conglomerates, new-world order, etc was fascinating. A very deserving treatment of modern mythologies with ancient origins, that reveals itself in digestible doses as you go from stage to stage.
I felt like a modern day knight-in-arms fighting against a dark hidden empire, bent upon global domination with an agenda stretching back hundreds of years, much greater than my pitiful abilities and ambitions.
Deus Ex let me exit with a grand finale that was truely to my liking; the game anticipated my intentions, and gave me the moral and ethical choice I would have preferred anyway. I wonder what you will choose? At that final point in the game, the fate of the world would be in the palm of your hand.

An ABSOLUTE must buy!

I don't care if you absolutely hate RPG/First-Person-Shooter games! Anyone with a PC that can run this game must buy it! The game is completely revolutionary in the sense that the story is in no way linear. (Well, not the first game, but the first to do it well.) If you kill your assistant, Anna, for example, the game will continue, but with a completely different outcome. I mean, when I was in the HQ, I was exploring the building and walked into the girls bathroom. When the cheif breifed me for my next mission, he also lectured me about going into the wrong sex bathroom! Another nice thing is, you can interact with nearly everything you see, whether it pertains any mportance to the game or not. All I can say is that absolutely EVERYBODY should buy this game!

At the risk of being redundant...

I realize many, many people have given Deus Ex five stars, but I simply cannot help myself. One of the best surprises I've had in computer gaming in quite a while.

In my mind, two things distinguish this game by from from the benchmark. The first is the detail. From conversations being held by various people to enormous maps to bits of newsprint scattered about, the game has gone to such lengths to create a complete world that upon completing it, I immediately began anew and discovered whole regions I hadn't noticed the first time. It's a pleasure to listen to the people around me actually interact in relevant, meaningful ways, and to be able learn what the press thinks. Without a doubt, a step in the right direction towards realism.

The second thing is the unfolding of the plot. The characters are developed uncommonly well, especially those who are not covered extensively. The writing is concise, providing a wealth of implication with each conversation (note that some characters, I felt, were just a tad 2-D - mainly Walton Simons). Thus, the game carefully crafts genuine moral dilemmas for the player to piece apart, instead of just aiming him forward and telling him 'fire at will.'

Of course, the graphics were quite good, using a clever in-engine cinematic system to make conversations more dramatic. And the object interaction was also above average (though showing its lineage to System Shock 2 quite clearly). But the above two reasons I specified were the reason the game drew me back in for a second round.

Completely addicting! Wish I could give it 6 stars!

I hate RPG's. Walk here, talk there, get a magic spell or treasure chest key..yawn..here comes the narcolepsy.

I love First Person Shooters though, and I bought this game blind on a whim, thinking that I'd get a hose-em-down game with a little twist of searching for stuff. I got WAY more than that.

Playing this game is incredibly involving and immersing. The conversations are intelligent without being boring. The weapons are awesome without being too far off the weird end, and the graphics are very good too.

The brilliant premise of a overreaching UN and patriotic US new revolutionaries, is frighteningly realistic, and make you really care about your character's well being. More than I few times I found myself hollering to the screen as I evaded withering troop fire, or Woo Hooing to an excellent sniper takedown (despite an ultra-realistic wiggling reticle caused by exertion)!

I've never been this captivated by a game this good in premise, storyline, action and being able to go to plan B or C before.

I haven't finished the game, but I know I'm gonna have to deal with more 3am bedtimes this week =:-o

For the love of God, buy this game.

I am a huge first person shooter fan. And out of every first person shooter I have played this is my favorite. What I really like is the length of this game. Its very long and challenging. It won't take you only a week and then your done. It has a great story to it. You don't just kill everyone and your done. If you're thinking about getting this game don't think, get it.

Deus Ex -- The Best Game You're Not Playing

After reading PC Gamer's "Game of the Year" edition in which "Deus Ex" received top honors, I went ahead and purchased a copy. And all I can say is "wow."

Following the tried-and-true format of government conspiracies and viruses gone awry, Deus Ex places you in the futuristic role of JC Denton, an agent for a United Nations Anti-Terrorist Group (UNATCO) who has been augmented w/ superhuman abilities. Immediately, you are taken through a training mission and from there, it's off rescuing Liberty Island, your brother, and eventually, the entire human race. The game is slickly placed, starting slow and then moving into an elusive "who-do-I-trust" mode. Although the game progresses in linear format, HOW you get to the next mission is entirely up to you. For example, if you need to find a way into a warehouse but don't have the computer key code, you can simply blow up the door. Or, find a secret entrance through the basement. With Deus Ex, you're never stuck trying to figure out where to go next or how to do it. A log is kept of all conversations and any other important information you may need, so you'll never be in a scramble looking for that crumpled Post-It note that had the lock code scrawled on it. Graphics are top-notch, and voice acting is superb. Weapons are a little generic, but the enemy AI and story is so engrossing, you'll have a hard time powering down and getting some sleep. If you're looking for an RPG that gets away from the generic dungeon crawl, then pick up Deus Ex. You will not regret it.

not much new to say about this superlative game, but there are a few items. 1. enemies are only stupid on easy. on hard, one shot from that hidden sniper and youre dead. 2. the three conclusions diverge close enough to the end that a well placed save will allow you to do all of them. note however that they all require different equipment and separate well developed skills. 3. this game is a little tough to get into. the training session is a turn-off and so is the beginning of the first level. i did the statue of liberty three times, because each time i realized approaches and pointers that i missed and i had to go back to pick them up. its best to develop computer, lockpick, and multitool skills and sneak in the back way, but you still need the inventory hogging gep gun to get rid of those annoying robots if you want to maximize inventory and point count. once past the first level, i was totally drawn in and "wasted" weeks of free time. 4. the voice acting is not bad if you dont mind the flat staccato of dragnet or the untouchables (showing my age). 5. this game is a real memory pig. after a while the center point would begin to drift, requiring a restart. i increased my real memory to 256; all problems resolved. all my other games loaded much faster too. in summary, this certainly is the best shooting game ive done. im surprised it wasnt a particularly big seller. everyone needs to go out and immediately correct this injustice.

Best all around game I've found

I'm not sure where to start...You can approach missions different ways, from being a savvy, stealthy agent to being a head-on firefight warrior. You can interact with all the characters along the way, sometimes gaining needed knowledge only after the 3rd time you initiate conversation.

There are points in the game where you have to make choices...Trust your brother, or your agency. Rule the world, or destroy technology and send everyone back to the stone ages. And the game relates to real world history, real-world places. I've never played a game through more than once, but I did for this game several times. And I found new things each time I played.

I enjoyed Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, Red Faction (recently), but none of them measure up to Deus Ex.

Most engrossing PC game ever.

This is the best PC game I have ever played. The level of interactivity and the "go anywhere, do anything" design make it extremely fun; you will find yourself just messing around with the game just to see what it can do.

Get this game and enjoy it. You will play it at least twice.

Great game with some minor flaws...

Deus Ex...one of those rare gems that help define a genre. Sure, the graphics are dated (even when the game first came out, it was already behind the times). But what the game didn't have in "gee-whiz" graphics, it more than made up for in the "I'm-going-to-stay-up-until-5am-in-the-morning-because-I-want-to-see-what-happens-next." area. In other words, this game has a plot *so* thick, you could practically touch it.

PLEASE NOTE: I've tried to push this game on a lot of people. Something I've noticed is that some people quit the game during the first/second mission because the game has a rather slow pace in the beginning.
