This game works on nearly all fronts. From the storyline to the music to the gameplay to the replay value, this is the one to get.
The storyline is excellent, especially near the end of the game, when the secrets of Gerald Robotnik are revealed. Also, the story moves at a good pace, beginning with some mystery, keeping the mystery throughout most of the game, and then ending with a dramatic conflict with the true enemy of this game. It is also a great plot device in the final level when both sides join forces to stop ARK from crashing into the Earth.
The music is great, and I recommend the soundtrack to anyone who likes the game. The music for the different levels is great, particularly the music in "City Escape" and "Meteor Herd". The boss level music really brings out the intensity that goes along with the storyline as you near the conclusion of the game.
The gameplay itslef is outstanding. Except in one case in the Dark story, no character has two levels in a row. This is refreshing as it gives the player a new challenge to work through. The Rouge and Knuckles levels are particularly good, as they are large and it is not a level that is finished in two seconds. The game also nicely progresses from easy levels to moderate levels to difficult levels. The player doesn't feel like he's fighting something impossible or doing something that is so easy it's not even funny. The one complaint I have about the whole game is the camera work. It is not very freehand and it is often difficult to backtrack your steps if you miss something.
This game has the best replay value of any game that I've ever played. The Chao Garden helps. But this game truly never gets old. And once you finish the actual game, you still have nearly 150 emblems to try and get if you want to collect them all. It may be hard, but it's fun to do. I recommend this game to any gaming fans and especially to Sonic fans. Of all of the new post-Dreamcast Sonic games, this is the one to get.

I will be completely honest, and also somewhat picky, but with anything as greatly made as Sonic the Hedgehog, I have to be.
First thing about this game - It's great, and that's all there is to it. The controls are tight, make sense, and are easy to figure out as soon as you pop the disc in the system. Level design is generally varied and exciting, and therefore very interesting, assuming you actually enjoy the robot-fighting sequences, which can be a drag at times. The battle mode is good for an hour or two of fun with a friend, but really does not add too much value to the game. However, playing hide-and-go-seek on emerald-hunting levels is a very fun way to make a frustrating search game into a rather interesting two-player "game."
Secondly, the graphics are solid and definately clear enough to make out what you're running after, blowing up, hunting down, etc. The Gamecube, having an ATI-designed-and-built graphics processor in it, could certainly have powered some greater graphics, but it really doesn't flaw the game at all. It's solid, and the framerate is as fast and furious as always, without a hint of slowdown at all.
Thirdly, the sound is tremendous, and music is very mood-and-tone accurate. The special effects are spot on, and the jet fighters flying up ahead in several of the levels make really nice "FWOOOSH" noises, adding an extra little bit of fun in there, too. Unless you absolutely adore cheesy 80's rock music, then the music won't bowl you over, but it definately does what it should do, and that's to set the overall mood of the levels. However, the "City Escape" (level 1 for Sonic) song will really get on your nerves if you play it too much.
But with most games, I will also point out the bad. But the bad here shouldn't be so bad that anyone would avoid buying this game. Most of the problems are caused by the camera, and much like the original Sonic Adventure (Now available for the gamecube in a lackluster-but-still-classic form known as Sonic Adventure DX: Directors Cut), the camera WILL get in the way. Many times one must jump from platform to platform, but the camera will fix itself looking in one direction, causing the jump to be blind. That's not a good thing. The boss fights are challenging, but rather uninspired. Boss fights are generally supposed to be fun and cool, instead they feel more like frustrating filler material. However, the original Sonic Adventure's bosses, as far as I've been through it, aren't much better.
Overall, it's a great game, but it really doesn't compare to Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure DX: Directors cut, which are both more problematic but generally more fun and interesting. But if you've got the money, buy both. Just remember the DX version is pretty lackluster, having just barely enough substance to make me wonder what in the world a "Director's Cut" has to do with anything. But it's still fun. And Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is fun too. Get them both for the full effect.
Good, But not Perfect

This is a pretty good game. I share everyone else's complaint when I say there aren't enough Sonic and Shadow levels, but the other levels are pretty good, just not nearly as fast and as fun as Sonic and Shadow's. One word of warning, change the voices to Japanese. The English voices are just horrible. In some levels, the music is really annoying, but I'd just try to ignore it. The graphics aren't as nice as most other Gamecube games, but it's a pretty game anyway. The Chao raising might be too cutesy for some, but it's a fun little distraction. I'm giving the game five stars because the games minor flaws, like the pissy camera, don't hurt the game too much. Now, give us Sonic Adventure 3!

"Live and Learn...hangin' on the edge of tommorow...Live and Learn..from the works of yesterday...Live and Learne...if you beg or if you borrow...Live and Learn..you may never find your way" sings the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle theme song. This game is GREAT, let me tell you. I first bought it only because of the chao, but I soon realised the story part of the game was excellent! Most of the stages are very fun, and the ones that are challenging really get you thinking sometimes. The story in this game is, the 'ultimate lifeform', Shadow(a black hedgehog) has been commiting crimes in town. He's stolen the Chaos Emerald, allowing him to use Chaos Control and teleport from place to place. Sonic has been blamed for these crimes, and the police is on the run looking for him. Eggman finds Shadow after breaking though a military base(or something like that) and Shadow tells him to meet him on the space colony, ARK. Meanwhile, Sonic is busy trying to escape from the cops. Tails is also helping Sonic, while Knuckles is trying to get the Master Emerald from Rouge the Bat; I won't explain who she is because it would ruin the suprise. He ends up breaking the Master Emerald into pieces.(thus is why Knuckles and Rouge are constantly searching for the pieces on their stages) Knuckles goes away and ends up helping Sonic as well. Soon Eggman meets up with Shadow at the ARK place, and they plan to get all the Chaos Emeralds so they can take over the world. Rouge follows them into ARK and helps them, while doing a secret plan of her own. Sonic and co. soon figure out that Shadow, Eggman, and Rouge are causing all this and it turns into a fierce battle! I won't tell what happens, but it suprised me quite a bit! Overall, this is a great game, I loved it. The camera angles are bad, but should it matter? Buy this game! Not rent, BUY! Once you're done with this adventure, my friend, another one awaits you, Sonic Heroes..
I rate this game 5 stars.
