The new expansion for SWG will be Trials of Obi Wan. Yet another attempt by the development teams, of SOE and LA, to destroy continuity for the sake of selling something else. Paying to play SWG is paying to play in a commercial.
I beseach any and every person to boycott this game until the developers start listening to their player base.]

The game started off great when I first started playing it over 2 years ago but with the NGE it is no longer worth playing.
-Quest and missions are broken.
-Crafters and Entertainers are useless now.
-Servers are practicly empty even during peek hours.
-You used to be able to change your profession if you didn't like it or wanted to try something new. Now you have to delete your charactor and make a new one if you want to play a different profesion. speaking of professions swg went from 32 down to 9 professions.
-the biggest problem is with customer service. Sony Online Entertainment (the company that runs swg) is notorious for having the worst customer service in the online game industry (mmorpg.com or any other gamming website will confrim this)
Heavy Feature Cuts, Game Delays.

Please note this game has been pushed back from it's original release date of 4/15/03. No future release date has been announced. Since none of the reviews seem to have provided decent information about the game itself, I'll try and provide some. Further information and explinations can be found on the official site...
First, comparisons to EQ, DAoC, AO, AC1/2 apply only in regards to SWG being a MMO. The game is set out to be more like UO 'done right' than a real relation to any of the recent entries into the market. They are using Skill-based characters that don't fit into the hard 'class archtypes' of the rest of the market. You could have a crafter that fights or a healer that can tinker, dance, and cook up a set of buffs.
There will be only single character servers. You have the ability to play on a maximum of 10 servers, with one character on each of those servers. 'Rerolls' will require playing on a different server, selling back exsisting character skills, or (in the case of playing a different species on a server you like) deletion of the character.
There will be no vehicles in the game at launch, although they are a high priority immediately after launch. The same is true of player-run cities and the 'politician' profession to manage those cities. (This just means no taxation methods, or central 'governments' for player housing. You can still build houses and guild halls at launch.)
There will be no spaceships available to players for a minimum of a year after launch. This will also require the purchase of an expansion pack.
You *will* *not* be a Jedi in this game. Period. This is a stated goal of the developers. You can try, but they only want the slimmest portion of the playerbase to be able. (i.e. only the Crush(FoH) or Tigoles of EQ, or the Ronald McDonalds of UO) There is a complex system to create a 'Force Sensitive' Character slot. That slot is subject to perma-death. (You die, the character is deleted)
I've given the game a two star rating because it can only fail to live-up to expectations. The lack of vehicles, ships, or other iconic (outside of NPC characters) touches is leading this game towards dissapointment of fans of Star Wars. If it weren't hampered by the franchise it's linked to this could be a good game. With the various expectations of the franchise and the fans linked to it, nothing good will happen for this game.

Star Wars: Galaxies is one of the best MMORPG games I've played to date. And I've played quite a few. If you've ever wanted to immerse yourself within the boundaries of the Star Wars universe, wield blasters, fight alongside alien races, track down villans, or wanted to set up a shop and become a wealthy merchant, this game is right up your alley.
Each character will be different from another. Instead of just taking a single class profession, you will get to choose different professions within professions. For example, a Brawler can be good with unarmed combat, or may choose to wield a weapon, such as a sword, or a polearm, or even an axe. Artisans can delve into learning different creation traits, like specializing as a Weaponsmith or an Armorer. Once you have gained enough experience, you can take your character from a basic class into an advanced class, which will let you develop even more different abilities than were available to you before.
The gameplay itself is nice. The screen and controls are very user-friendly and easy to understand. The combat sequences are simple enough to understand, and instead of there being combat "rounds" like in traditional RPG's, your weapons will have specific recycle rates that allow you to attack after they finish. For example, most times blaster pistols will allow you to attack every 4 seconds, while knives and daggers are somewhere around 3.7 seconds.
The maps are absolutely gargantuan. They're scaled to be a whopping 15 x 15 kilometers in size, and characters generally travel at a maximum rate of 5 meters per second. If you were to go from the top of a map to the very bottom, it will take your character at least 50 minutes of real time to walk. This leaves you with plenty of opportunities to explore, and to take on missions for experience and cash.
Also, you're not limited to a single planet. By using transport stations, you can go to other planets, such as Tatooine, Dantooine, Endor, Naboo, and many others not seen before in the movies. Plus, future expansions promise more areas to explore, as well as combat in space! Imagine yourself piloting an X-Wing or a TIE fighter.
Of course, no game is without flaw. The missions are far too difficult to do when you first start out, so making money becomes tedious as you do simple delivery missions within the city. Most times, you should only take destroy missions with a group, and sometimes that can still be challenging. Running around the map can get a bit too boring as well, since you'll have to spend 10 or more minutes in just transit time to reach a certain destination. Fortunately, future updates promise to include personal speeders and animal mounts to correct that problem. And lastly, the hostile "mobs" (mobile characters) get too ichy with their trigger fingers. You have to be extremely careful to avoid them when travelling, or they'll kill you in a matter of seconds.
Overall, though, Star Wars: Galaxies, is one of the best MMORPG's, if not games, out there. Pick up a copy, and go back a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
Steer clear unless being ripped off is your thing

I started playing the game about 2 years ago. When i started there were 32 professions that you was able to play and although they were time consuming to master, They were fun and i made many friends while playing. This is no longer the case as you will see later on in the review.
SOE charge £10 a month subscription to play on the server, or to basically rent a character space.
Anyway now to my reasons that i would steer clear of the game: Sony announced a new expansion JTL. I bought a hard copy of the Jump to lightspeed expansion which was £20 and enjoyed it. In the space of a year they bought out another expansion rage of the wookies i then decided to buy a hard copy of that also (another £20). Althought i felt quite annoyed when buying the rage of the wookies expansion they were giving away Jump to lightspeed along with this on hard copy. (I prefer to buy hard copies of the game and try not to opt for the digital download) So basically i had bought JTL twice. Annoyed i still carried on playing and thought SOE wouldnt screw their player base again. So i carried on spending the £10 a month to play as well as the other monies i had spent on paying for the expansions. Then SOE announced that they would be releasing another expansion "The Trials of Obi Wan" This time it would not be released on hard copy but only available via digital download. This time i had to pay another £20 but i wasnt able to have a hard copy of the game this time i had to download it. There were loads of promises that this would be a great expansion pack and that there was going to be loads of new loot on the new mustafar planet. I was pretty excited about this as i had completed my jedi grinding and needed something new to do within the game. Then the day after recieving this expansion on the download it was revealed that there was going to be a mass overhaul of the game. It was going to be changed into a FPS sort of game with 9 professions that you get locked into. There is no more changing professions like when there were 32 starting professions and if you want to be a new profession you will have to start from scratch, hence SOE making more money of the people that play this game as grinding a profession can be done in either a few days or a few months.(Depending on if you are a powergamer or not) Jedi is now an out of the box profession that every one can start with (and after playing it on the test center i would say 90% of the players will be jedi.) All what i had worked for over the past 2 years was going as of the 15th November due to the NGE. I tried out the new version of the game on the test center servers and thought oh well maybe i can adapt to this even though at this point in time i had spent £300 playing this game. The next time that i logged into the game i was greeted with a message saying that everyone that is currently playing the game will be recieving the Jump to lightspeed expansion for free and it will be downloading to them in the back ground. This was the straw that broke the camels back.
I feel personally betrayed by SOE as does most of the player base that used to play this game. Also another point is that everytime an expansion was released so was some other part of the starwars franchise. For example when rage of the wookies was released so was Starwars Episode 3 in cinemas, When Trials of Obi Wan was released so was Starwars Episode 3 DVD. I am afraid that there is nothing to save it now. Except the people that will be playing via their xbox or PS2 as this is what the game seems to be preparing for.
Most of the player base is leaving as they feel that they have been slapped in the face by SOE. This game will eventually die a death. This game was an excellent MMORPG and i had many hours of fun playing my character. It was time consuming but i enjoyed it while i played. I would tell people now though if they are going to try this game i wouldnt bother, Unless you enjoy clicking a mouse button 300 times to win a fight against an animal or player. If button mashing is what you enjoy play this, otherwise steer clear.
STAR WARS GALAXIES IS DEAD

First off let me say that I used to love this game. I played it for 2+ years.
NOT ANYMORE - THAT GAME IS DEAD AND BURIED
Before NGE (New Gaming Experiance), what they called it when they gutted the entire game and pushed a pre-Alpha to live, I liked being able to run around on the ground doing stuff, questing, hunting with friends, jumping into a ship to go into space to shoot down starships... I liked just hanging out with people in it and chatting, the player based economy... The wonderful multibranched tree profesion system that let you do a little of this and that and have fun, and drop the classes/profesions when you got tired of them and try new things...
All of that has been removed.
Most of the vitrolic reaction that you will see here is due to a monsterously botched "upgrade" that was done over strong objections, and pushed out to the live servers WAY before it was ready. The called this the "New Gaming Experiance" or "NGE".
Selling points on SWG these days include:
- A player economy taht has been ruined.
- Crafting that is now pointless.
- An unplayable level of bugs.
- Went from 30 professions down to 9.
- Years worth of in game work wiped away.
- Bad/non-existant quests and experiance to advance.
- Their custmer service is bad or non-existant.
- The interface is the worst I have ever seen.
- Even chatting with other people is now painfully hard.
(So much so people have left for this reason alone!)
- Consistantly good content is broken or removed.
- Your complaints will be at best ignored.
- The player comunity has been destoyed.
- They never have been good about fixing bugs.
Seriously, it is horrifingly bad now.
* There is more that I could say about the way this game has been run, and is being run that would be true and *REALLY* negitive. Amazon says I am not supposed to be spitefull so I will merely point you in the right direction:
Do not buy this game until you have checked out the forums on the official site, be advised that views that they don't agree with there are often deleted. Check out their posting guidelines and read between the lines. At least on person who worked for them in customer relations and actually told customers the truth and did not lie on command to us was FIRED for it.
Don't just take my word for it. Do a google search too on NGE and SWG. This game is ruined and SOE cannot be trusted to ever run a good MMORPG ever again.
I am *VERY* sad to make this review. I used to like this game, and it is not just because they made changes I am annoyed, but because they could not even get them working before forcing them on us. That all the unique and good things in the game were destroyed.
Not all MMORPG's are like this, so don't play this one. :(
Amazon sells many good MMORPG's might I sugest looking at one of the following instead:
World of Warcraft
City of Heros
City of Villians
When they come out:
Dungens and Dragons Online
Star Trek Online

...i played THE best (not one of the best) games i ve ever seen.
I ve buyed Star Wars Galaxies (made a mistake- looked for another game) and decided to test it, cause i am the biggest Star Wars fan alive (I know, every one of u think that of yourselves :-) )
I loved that game from the first second i played it, and i played it with lots of fun till the "Black Day" 15th of november...
Unfortunately SOE decided to make some "inovative changes" and changed the whole game. Now there is not a bit of fun playing it, i tried, but i am sad about the result SOE gained with that changes... I am not up to the point canceling my account, cause i played over 1 and a half year, and had lots of friends in the very exciting community in a very exciting game. Now 80% of them are gone and i am sure, my account wont live longer than 2 months from now...
Let me give YOU a very honest tip: DONT BUY THAT BULK OF ****, BURNED ON A CD, AKA Star Wars Galaxies.... not until SOE changed their opinion and brought back the OLD SWG...

Okay, I have been playing for almost two years. The New Game Experience (NGE) has totally changed the game and it's combat system and not for the better. It's far more frustrating now than it is fun.
The best MMORPG to date!

Having played this for five hours with a friend, I can say this really is changing my prospective on MMORPGs. I really used to hate them after I bought EverQuest because of its time consuming gameplay and I always didn't feel it was worth the money I paid monthly to keep on playing. I am not a star wars fan in any way, and I really don't enjoy watching any movies of its sort, however I love this game.
The choices are endless for just about every aspect of this game. There are not too many servers up just yet, but the popularity of the game is growing by the hour. Currently, this game is at its third day, and Sony is already making changes and updates to its servers (the servers are down RIGHT NOW which is why I am writing this review). In the game you can be many different types of people including Marksmen, smugglers, bounty hunters, mages, Jedi, Entertainers (who can dance in the Taverns and even play instruments) and you can even buy houses and create stores (don't trust me on the stores part because I have only played for three days; I am not totally sure about it).
I found that there were was a more than necessary ammount of players in my server. The atmosphere in the game is very upbeat and I was able to ask people for advice almost all the time. When I asked people to Dual, people were very polite in saying "yes" or "no". I have come to expect that kind of behavior on MMORPGs since I had EverQuest. I am happy that the game has started off so well.
I really appreciate some of the aspects and extras of the game that make it unique. I really feel that if this wasn't a starwars game, it would be terrible. Yes, I know I hate StarWars, but the atmosphere is so fufilling that it can only be themed by starwars. You see, the fact that you can just sit down and socialize and get a drink at the Tavern is quite a "Starwars-y" feeling. Other features of this game that are unique is the built in clock which can give you a notice when you've reached a time limit that you have set (it doesn't matter currently because it is summer, but next year I go to college, so you can imagine it is a very usefull tool when I know I have to go back to work).
I also like how people can just start the game without much tedium like how there was in EverQuest. SWG has gotten rid of this by making a much more interactive world. Now, instead of slaying rats for weeks, you can kill criminals and other enemies you might make during playing the game, and this will raise your EXP. Also doing PvP will give you many bonuses. I really like doing this because of the loot you find. I found a rifle on one person when I beat him up with a survival knife. I then sold the rifle which gave me enough credits to be able to buy training for the next level in mage training. I was never able to do anything this great in EverQuest.
So, casual gamers out there? Want some fun? Even if you hate StarWars, I recommend this game to ALL casual gamers that want a project. Hardcore gamers, I don't know how you guys feel, but I am sure that this game will suit your needs as well. I'm off to play SWG, the servers are back up now!
