NOT Star Wars

This game represents the beginning of the end of the Star Wars franchise. It's not made by LucasArts and doesn't really have much to do with Star Wars at all.

The game was not ready when I was Beta testing it one month ago and I highly doubt that any of the critical bugs are fixed yet. This is a "serious" game which requires alot of repetitive work and a huge time investment.

Unless you are a student with nothing better to do all summer, don't buy this game. You need to invest at least 4 hours a day to be successful in the game.

On the positive side, the combat system is alot of fun. Going on a hunting expedition with a bunch of other players is cool. But the tedious portions of the game far outweigh the fun factor of combat.

I have been playing SWG for over 8 months. I am VERY experienced, so here is my review....

Graphics...5/5....Each planet is wonderfully detailed. When i first started I stayed on Tatooine for about a month. When i travelled to Coronet for the first time, i was blown away. This huge city was so much different from the desert of Tatooine. Later i travelled to Dantooine. The floral plains were made it the best looking planet in the game. Dantooine is where i live now. Dathomir is one HUGE and VERY dangerous jungle.

Interface...5/5...very easy to learn. Controls are great.

Sound...5/5....the music constanly changes from battle music, city music, or the music form entertainers.

Gameplay...3/5...I do not like that we have little control over battles. Its based on skills learned. Unlike other battle games, like Counter Strike, where you have to acutally aim, SWG is auto targetting, therefore it gets a bit redundant.

Overall...4/5...My favorite feature of the game is raiding rebel bases, as i am an imperial. Its really cool to be with groups of others attaking bases, killing rebels, and destroying turrets. Alos imperial troopers can own their very own AT-ST! Though to become strong to participate you have to train which gets a bit boring, but its well worth it. Also, ITS STAR WARS!!!! :)

Fun for the casual gamer

I am an adult gamer that only has a couple of hours a day to play the game. With that in mind, I find it to be the perfect game. It has so much to do that I have trouble fitting it all in. If I get bored with one aspect, there are 10 other activities to occupy my time.

Being an entertainer is far more fun that I ever expect. Crafting is extremely rewarding and, with the ability to experiment, gives the game tremendous depth. Hunting is fun, but not quite as rich yet. When I am out hunting, I set up a camp and craft for a while and it makes it enjoyable.

Be aware that there are bugs as of 7/22/03, but I have never had any trouble logging in and I have never encountered a show stopping bug. The worst bugs were mildly annoying, but not enough to dampen my enthusiasm

Highly recommended.

Since Verant is producing this game and Everquest is still the number one MMORPG on the internet, I think it is safe to say this game will be a hit. All the reviews I have read from beta testers and magazine reviewers have the best to say about the game. And from what I have read, becoming a Jedi will not be obvious in the game. You can't select Jedi at any time. You have a chance of becoming "Force Sensitive" and once this happens then the avenue to becoming a Jedi will be available--manually enabled for you by the GMs. And being a Jedi makes you PVP by everyone in the game and NPC Empire forces will be hunting you down if it is known you are a jedi. For the Dark Jedi it means everyone including other Jedi and kill you. It will be interesting to see how Verant deals with the power gamers who will spend countless hours playing to become a Jedi.

Tedious

The recently revamped path to Jedi is discouraging, and tedious.
I estimate approximately 500 days of gathering experience points which are gained by killing each and every day groups of beasties in the game. Hmm dont want to do that every single day? Skip Jedi
They have musician ship professions, but unfortunately all the cantinas where musicians play are vacant. Two are alive and the musicians are mostly away from keyboard. They have more music but seldom can all but the skilled play this music so the first song learned is usually all you will hear.
They have image designer professions. But most dont want their images changed.
They have Pet Handlers, but few players are skilled enough to take any pet strong enough to be worth while.
They have Bioengineers again, few players are skilled enough to manage the stronger pets.
They have weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths, but these items require a good many credits, more than any new player can afford.
They have architects but not much creativity.

I believe many players handle two accounts and one account supports the items needed for their main character, so you wont see many sales if you develop the weapons, armor or other supplies and hope to succeed along these directions.

The new Jedi who made it this far before the revamp are weak
and unable to protect themselves against Bounty Hunters
who can strike with greater force, at greater distance with better armor protection. Jedi cannot group for protection either, for grouping exposes them to BH mission terminals
placing them on hit lists.

This game has been very laggy, and frought with bugs.
Many missions you cannot attempt alone.
Gaining credits, skills, required equipment, all hinges on tedious experience (xp) gathering, and it gets monotonous.
Not many times will you exclaim Oh this was fun!

SWG was the greatest game ever made, until Sony Online Entertainment got there hands on it. I played this game threw beta and for the next two and a half years after the release. The game started off so strong it had everything you could ever want. The crafting/mining system was amazing, there were people who would just play this game for the crafting system it was that good. Its heart breaking to see what Sony Online Entertainment has done to SWG... how a company could completely change and dismantle the game after having such a large player base is beyond me. Why would you change a product that was doing so well?
Its very sad to see the state of the game today, seems to be geared at children. Why is everyone a Jedi? It used to be a great privilege to become a Jedi (I was the 4th to unlock on Bria). It used to require a lot of work/luck to unlock the Jedi slot. I remember that there was only a hand full of Jedi around, and now it's a started profession??? Kind of takes wow factor out of the game. After playing World of Warcraft for two years I still miss the original SWG. I wish they could bring this game back to its original glory, but there is no chance of that ever happening. The game is to far gone...
I wish they would release SWG II update the graphics and bring it back to the point right before the combat revamp! I would come back to the game, and so would 1000's of others.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

Hehe, I'm not sure where people get off calling this a bad game. In all seriousness, I like this game alot. The biggest enjoyment i get is dealing with other people... many will write bad reviews because they haven't learned to enjoy THEMSELVES and other people.

Vehicles are in-game now :) Bugs are minimal. Those crying lack of content have clearly never interacted with others... mission terminals are there to help you "get by" with money, but I make it as a smuggler and shady businessman. Dealing with others makes my money and makes my day.

Jedi are rare, just as it should be :) This game is for people who want to be the 3rd X-wing pilot from the left or stormtrooper TK-857, not Luke Skywalker or Han Solo.

Honestly it amazes me why some people have written as poor of reviews as they have.. this is the best of 3 MMORPG's that I have played (Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, and SWG).

If you enjoy connecting with others and making something special of it, this is a great game to do it with :) To those writing bad reviews, I'm sorry for you - the best content I know of is that I have created myself - in ANY game. Period!

Summary:

Overall: 1
Gameplay: 1
Graphics: 2
Sound: 4

System:

CPU: 1.7 P4
RAM: 640MB PC-800 RDRAM
Video: GeForce3

General/Summary: I was a beta tester, and with the NDA gone I can tell everyone that, "This game is not out of beta yet!" Anyone who purchases this game on June 26th will be paying full MSRP to participate in open beta. Bugs abound, and not even little annyoing ones, but HUGE gamestoppers. Buyer Beware! At least for a period of time from release to at least 3 months or so.
Gameplay: There seems to be a lot of depth to what you can do at first, buy a house, get married, splice professions... Be a gunfighting doctor musician etc... But any way you slice it... It gets pretty old FAST.

Graphics: Ok... Have you all seen the publicity shots and videos from E3? How everything is nice and curvy and there's Environment Reflections out the whazoo, and beautiful shadows and lighting effects? Well, so have I, and I'm not sure what game that is... but it's not SWG... In fact the Devs even admitted to putting a cap on the graphics, at least in the beta I was playing no more than 3 days ago. As they are, they aren't awful... But they're getting a low score from me for misleading advertisement. By the way, there's (was) a bug that kills your character if you have shadows activated in the city and are using an ATI card.

Sound: The saving gracec of this game, if you close your eyes and don't touch the keyboard or mouse... at least it SOUNDS like Star Wars, even if it doesn't look, play, or feel like Star Wars. So you can probably enjoy that aspect... that is until it crashes due to a C++ Runtime error for no apparent reason.

Boycott Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts.

I have played Star Wars: Galaxies for 782 days according to the /getvet command. I have purchased all of the expansions out to date. I was considering creating a second account. As of 11-17-05 my account is cancelled. The New Game, also known as the Starter Kit, is the third version of SWG and it is riddled with bugs and incomplete. It is a far inferior product to its previous versions as well. The NG was released after being kept secret for an unknown period of time and allowing players only a two week notice of it being published. Even less time was devoted to it being tested by sources outside of SOE. Trials of Obi Wan and the NG were released in such a manner as to call into question SOE's and LA's ethics. As represented by the employees who post to the forums SOE and LA are uncarring, glib, and/or vastly out of touch with the player community.

Most of these are not new complaints. However, with the release of the NG these problems have escalted to such a degree that the game is no longer playable. While some are content to merely switch games I am not. Simply changing the direction of the flow of money to SOE and LA will not get their attention. I am boycotting all products created by Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts. I encourage others to do the same.

I do not think my actions alone with effect SOE or LA one iota. In fact, I doubt anything will change their policies. The fan base for Star Wars and other properties is sufficiently numerous to mitigate any discontent portion. While some have predicted that the NG will cause the collapse of SWG I believe otherwise. It will lose many current players but those will be replaced by SOE's and LA's new target market. SOE and LA will later use the negative comments and future subscriptions numbers to prove that they were right all along and to dismiss anyone who opposes them as being knee jerk reactionaries who are against change just because they don't like change. Because most likely the next expansion will also bring a new version of SWG as SOE and LA attempt to copy whichever game is doing better then.
