Many people have been slamming this game. It may seem a little off beat now, but just wait until the expansion packs come out. All of you SW fanatics out there will finally be able to fly in space.
This game, overall, may seem a little disappointing at first. Don't go and quit after a couple of days. Give it a shot and you will learn to love it. It does have a nice learning curve of about 1 week or so, but in that week you will become a Galaxy expert.
Horrible, insignificant

You thought this would be better than everquest, playing a wookie on different planets, tons of nerding for sure. Unfortunately it is nothing BUT everquest. Sure it is addicting but the design is fundamentally weak and the graphics are brilliant but only because it is funded well.
It's pretty much mmorpg back to the basics, don't get this game whatever you do

I have been a long time beta tester of this game and it is my first time playing an online game of this type. First and foremost George Lucas gave us a rich and deep universe filled with creatures and charecters that awed us as we sat in the theater. What LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment dishes up is a static world where your goal is to run from one terminal to the next in an attempt at advancement. Cities are flat and one dimensional, in Mos Eisley one would expect to see creatures from every corner of the Galaxy working, playing and walking down the street, instead you see other players running back and forth attempting to master their fields. I just would not buy this game for quite some time, currently unstable, buggy and just plain boring.
From beta test and still loving it

Like all Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, this game has encountered a million challenges. And the game continues to evolve, with new features being added (as well as old features being nerfed). The game is always in a state of development, not from a stability standpoint (I've had the game crash on me only once even while beta testing), but from a features standpoint.
I'll say this, though - this game is a BLAST. Playing around in the Star Wars galaxy is intensely addictive and has given me hours upon hours of fun. If I get bored doing one thing, I can try something completely different. Want to blast a whole cornucopia of Star Wars monsters? Just wander out of town. Want to tinker around building things for a while? Go mine some resources, pick up a crafting tool, and you're on your way. Want a pet Bantha? Just fly on over to Mos Eisly and wander off into the hills. Feel like getting down and dirty and fighting some real people? Head into a rowdy faction town and start some static. Personally, whenever I tire of one facet of the game, there are always two others that catch my interest.
Another great aspect of the game is that the people who play it are, for the most part, courteous, intelligent, friendly, helpful, well-spoken, and generally fun to be around. I've never personally met anyone who was rude and have met quite a few people who are fun to get together with and go adventuring.
Sure, if you go to the SWG boards, you will see complaints about things being nerfed and game elements being switched around, but personally, each change has just changed HOW I play the game, not how much I enjoy it. Plus, the SWG team is working around the clock to make the game even better.
Without reservation, I recommend this game.
Don't get your hopes up

Don't expect too much, and expect to pay $15/month, and you'll enjoy the game, somewhat. Dull combat, tedious crafting, and 'upkeep' that means you have to work, constantly, just to keep what you own.
Good luck.

First, I must say how suprised I am at the negative reviews I have read about this game. It seems that you can play the game for a week or two, and form the opinion that it is boring, "lame", monotonous, etc. As a player than logged into this wonderful, vibrant, socially driven game over a year ago (the first day it went live, to be exact), let me give you my thoughts.
First, you can not beat this game. It is not a "run through to the finish, then let me write a scathing online review because it only took me three days to beat it" type experience. This is a UNIVERSE full of interesting (and not so interesting) people. That's what drives the game, the social side. Sure, you can build a player up that can defeat anyone else in combat (which is possible), or you can become a Master at a non-combat profession (like a Doctor) and help the defeated. You can meet and explore new worlds with new friends, or you go go at it alone and see what adventures the galaxy holds for you.
Have you noticed I have not once mentioned controls, gameplay, weapons, skills, etc. since I started this review? There is no need to, actually. The controls are intuitive, the professions are numerous, and finding yourself bored with this game should tell you that it is not the right game for you. Imagine a Chat Room with all aspects of the Star Wars Universe... you travel from planet to planet. You will soon be able to fly your own ship (the Space Expansion pack is due fall 2004). The people in this game, good or bad, are the ones that make the universe what it is, just like at your job, neighborhood, or any social interation in your life.
Without the Lightsabers, of course.

This game is amazing because of all the great variety you have. It really does immerse you into the Star Wars universe. You can be an imperial bounty hunter with an array of stormtrooper servants ready to kill anything that moves, you can be a rebel medic healing the wounded soldiers in the Galactic Civil War, you can be a neutral droid engineer selling attack droids to the highest paying customer. Whatever you want in the Star Wars galaxy, you can have. I am giving it alot of praise for not owning the game anymore. There are a few reasons I gave up the game though. But before I say any of this, anyone who is thinking about buying the game and is a Star Wars fan, Do It! It's a great game but just doesn't suit my tastes enough. Anyways,
1. This is true in most MMORPG's so this isn't just a negative for this game. I love Role Playing. That's why I like D&D so much. There is a lack of people in this game that will Role Play at all. I find myself among people who just seem to treat their character as a microphone for themselves rather then pretending to be in the Star Wars Galaxy. But there are a few people who will stay in game and talk like they were that character, but very few.
2. Like I said before, Grinding, Grinding, Grinding. This game really does involve alot of doing the same thing over and over and over. Some people like doing that though. But for others, it's not so fun. Take the artisan for instance. Although there are quite a few things you can build to begin with, most require resources and tools that are sometimes hard to find, and therefore, you are found building the same thing over and over and gaining little experience each item.
3. It can be hard to find a group of willing individuals to tackle a quest. Every so often, you might receive a random invite from someone, but it's rare. You have to start making alot of in game friends to get a chance at having an epic group battle. But I do remember a fun time that I had in SWG one time. I was in a Rebel city on Tattoine (spelling?) which was totally populated with Rebels. So naturally, I became one. One day, a large group of imperial forces accompanied by stormtroopers and AT-ST's attacked the city (I'm sure just to see how long they could last.) It was wicked fun seeing the creatures that can be trained by Rebel Creature Handlers take on the AT-ST's, and seeing all the lasers flying everywhere from Rebel and Imperial forces. I died about 4 times in that hour or so.
So, I'm barely against SWG but enough to turn me off and make me not want to pay $15 a month. That's pretty much money.

Like many people who joined the game back during the first beta test I walk away from the game deeply saddened by what SOE did to destroy what was once the best online game around (argueably). Like many people, I devoted much of my real-life time to grinding, exploring, and playing a difficult game to master and appreciate. I have read many of these reviews and enjoyed getting a laugh from several people who tinkered with the game in playing then quit because it was too "hard" or not "thrilling" enough. It is clear from the reviews many people found Star Wars Galaxies too "something". Well, it sounds like excuses, but everyone is certainly entitled to their own experience whether good, bad, or indifferent. I walked away from this game shortly after the NGE release. I vented my frustrations to SOE via both the in-game form and through the forums, to no avail. Star Wars Galaxies once boasted a thriving population of over 250,000 active accounts worldwide. Without knowing the exact number left I would speculate by saying that if half remain they're (SOE) doing well. This game was without question (once) a game well-worth playing. It has been reduced to nothing short of a complete debacle. A game that now rewards the first-time user of becomming a Jedi without spending time playing the game. So, before you become enamored with the advertisements of playing this game read ALL the information. Remember to set aside $15 dollars a month and try to understand this is NOT your character it is the property of SOE who can at will change the very game you are playing to fit their needs. Do you like typing? The new NGE "enhancements" preclude you from using your mouse or joystick, but require you to type. If you must own this game buy it, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't live up to your expectations...
Great time to be had

This game has divided a great many people in the gaming community. You have those that are completely in love with the game, and then you have those die hard Star Wars gooks that gripe about how there are far too many jedi for the time period. MAny of these reviews say that the pvp system is broken. I feel that in many ways this is correct, the pvp system for this game does hav flaws and a rebalance is in the works after Jump to Lightspeed is released, HOWEVER, Jedi do not have the last word when it comes to pvp, if you are skilled enough you can easily take out a padawan learner, and even a knight with the help of a few friends. There is no reason a JEdi knight should be soloable by anyone. Think of how powerful the JEdi are supposed to be and ask yourself why you think a single player should be able to take out these jedi. The graphics depend upon your system and after playing EQ for 6 years it is a refreshing change of pace. The graphics in this game are far superior to any of the many other MMORPG's out there. he sound is fantastic, with the exception of the musician music. And the PVE can make for some memorable moments. There is nothing like getting knocked down by a bright blue stream of light from a force sensitive Night Sister during a fight. I say to those that love star wars... read a little more about the game on the webiste and the forums before buying to see if the current state of the game doesnt offend the geek in you. To all other players get this game now.. hehe and oh yeah LONG LIVE THE REBELLION
I was cautiosly optimistic at first but little did I know ..

This game rocks.
After having tried a few MMORPG, the latest being 'Sims Online', I was usually bored after a few days for lack of adventure. Star Wars has turned my world upside down. After installing from the 3 CD's (20 minutes) and applying the initial patches (5 minutes), I only wanted to take a peak. What started at noon ended at at 2:30 AM with little breaks in between.
I would recommend you experiment with the different races and professions at first before you spend to much time on one character's development. The UI is relative easy to learn yet complex if you use all features available to you. The world is vast and adventures, missions and fights are everywhere to be found. Skill Development is very well mapped out but if anything is unclear, help is available via life HELP characters or online searches and mouse-over messages.
You can develop your character by taking on missions (group missions are ideal training ground), by performing the activities of your profession such as entertaining, constructing items etc. They even have an eBay like online marketplace available to trade. I had a hard time finding sellers for my goods but time will tell if these various profession really develop and interact by building real markets.
The graphics are excellent and scale down to many lower grade cards as well. I do recommend that you have lot's of RAM to your availability. I have 512 on WinXP and it could easily use more.
Even though I spent a second night up until 3:30 am the game can be played also in very short increments. They even built in an Alarm clock you can set yourself to remind you to log off.
I hightly recommend this game to novice and experts alike.
