I've been playing SWG for almost two years now and my wife for just a few weeks less me. We put up with the nerfing of some of our favorite classes because the game was so flexible.
You could create almost any kind of avatar, and because of the very cool skills and professions trees you could follow almost any career path.
We met many people on line and joined our share of guilds but in on fell swoop SOE and LA have made our favorite characters useless. Suddenly all the maneuvering and point balancing we've done on the skill trees to come up with characters that could hold their own in combat but had useful skills outside of combat are worthless.
Everything that made our characters unique has been trashed. You can choose, combat machine, sneak thief, or support, no mixing of skills.
I understand the kids who have the most money to spend for online games drive the market, and maybe most of them just want to play a commando and don't care if he has any non-combat abilities but as adults we don't have a use for this game anymore.
To future players, BE WARNED, SOE and LA don't care how many hundreds of hours you've invested in a character. They'll change the rules on you in a heartbeat that will make your character useless or eliminate there class/skills completely.

This game was very good when it was launched in 2003, very buggy but nonetheless very fun. Since then SOE / Sony / Lucasarts has proceeded to create too many new bugs to count and has consistently failed to correct the old ones. The customer service is the absolute worst I've EVER seen, not only in mmorpg's, but as a business in general. Simple requests and bug reports are either completely ignored or replied to weeks or months later with generic responses such as "working as intended" or "will be fixed in an upcoming patch". The changes they have made to this game (Combat Upgrade and the recent NGE) have seriously downgraded the game and have sent roughly 80% of the players scrambling to other games. In summary, if you're looking for a great Star Wars game you've found it, only two years too late. If you still decide to buy this game be prepared for laggy and buggy gameplay and the worst customer service you'll ever experience. Read the player forums at [...] for more reviews supporting this SOE trainwreck. I will never purchase another SOE game or Sony product as long as I live and this experience has caused a lifelong Star Wars fan to lose some of his love for Star Wars as a whole.
Rise and Fall of a GREAT Game

I started playing Star Wars a little over four years ago now, at first it was great. Depending on my mood at the time I could either grab a blaster and go hunting or sit in my (In-Game) House and do some crafting. Things were made much easier for me because I had the support of a well established and very active guild at my back (which Included two real-life friends).
The Expansions, starting with Jump to Lightspeed and then Rage of the Wookies were both resounding successes in my opinion. In space, the ship controls were a little tricky for beginners but once you got the hang of it you didn't even have to think about pushing this button to turn or that button to fire... you just locked on, closed in and BAGGED whoever you happened to be aiming for. My favorite component of this game was the crafting (Droid Engineer/Tailor/Medic). This was always very easy for me because my guild was always very supportive, I rarely ran out of supplies thanks to the modification of the Bazaar terminals being linked planet/galaxy-wide. I could be on tatooine in my shop and order supplies from coruscant or Naboo.
Then, they (Sony/Lucasarts) took something that worked well and was a lot of fun that alot of people enjoyed playing every day (like myself) and Did to the game what the Death Star did to Alderaan... Instant, total and complete destruction for which they soon paid a dear price. Loss of players = loss of revenue = loss of popularity and VERY negative reviews all around. They basically took everything that I, among others, enjoyed about the game and completely eliminated it. Before this.. incident.. My player character was very strong in many areas, Master Artisan (Crafting/Surveying), Master Droid Engineer (again more crafting) and Tier 3 Rebel Pilot with Master Marksman as well as a tier 2 medic. It took me more than two years to get that far and the whole thing was destroyed in less than a week. I left for about five or six months and when I returned not only was I locked out of my own houses and unable to use any of my tools but I was forced to pass up all that I had worked for in order for my character to fit in to their new (and I must say, completely ridiculous) system. One of eight or nine character base-types, no crafting and probably not much else either. Rumors abound as to why they did what they did but I think they just took the easy way out, they did it because they could. They were constantly adding patches/hotfixes (most of the time without the approval or even the opinion of their player base) and with each new patch came new problems. A continually expanding game universe.. more like a continually deteriorating one.
I am very angry about what Lucasarts and Sony have done to this game because even to this day I have not yet found a game that is anything like what SWG used to be, chances are there never will be again.

This is a textbook example of releasing a game unfinished and hoping to finish it while we pay. Only problem is that the game has so many bugs that they have been forced to spend all their time "trying" to fix bugs and almost no time finishing the game. Result: After a month of play there is little or nothing to do and the PvP is so unbalanced that everyone either plays on the Empire's side or they die - alot!
How many Jedi are in the game? None
How many Droids? Very few (bugged profession)
How many vehicles? None
Massive Star Wars Battles like in the movies? None
Dungeons? VERY few
Loot/Drops? None (they don't believe in drops)
Any "reason" to enter the few dungeons they have? None
Any reason to play SWG? None (the graphics are nice)
Number of promises? Many
You will have fun for the first month and then run out of things to do. You have been warned :)

Unfortunately Sony has turned the best online gaming experience into one of the worst with its much touted Combat Upgrade. This game is FULL of bugs, broken quests, and broken professions - this is no exaggeration, I have played it pre-upgrade and post-upgrade. It is a crippled game. The "upgrade" was rushed to live servers in order to coincide with an expansion release and the new Star Wars movie release - it was FAR from ready. Weeks later, it is still FAR from ready. Sony has a well-deserved reputation for ignoring it's customer base, and this, I feel, is the crux of their online gaming disasters. The developers refuse to utilize customer feedback, their sparce communication with their gaming community is arrogant, patronizing, totalitarian, and chocked full of broken promises. This is why I cannot recommend this game to any potential gamers - you will pay for beta testing month after month while development struggles to correct thousands of bugs that should have never been released in the first place. As they corrrect on-going bugs, more are introduced on a continuing basis. Because marketing strategies, not online gaming enjoyment for the customer base, dictate the direction in which this game evolves, the player will not find a rich enjoyment in this Star Wars universe, he will only find frustration and isolation. For an online gaming experience this is not the game to buy - servers are barren and any undertaking begins with a very long search for other players to group with because grouping with other players is now a necessity - solo content in this game is gone. If the player is looking for fun and content, I strongely recommned not entering Star Wars Galaxies!
Save your money, this is coming from someone who knows...

There is no real content in this game. They deviated from the story line in January and the game has been fully derailed ever since. And if you are looking for credentials as far as how veteran I am to this game....4 accounts 26 professions mastered, Jedi Included, played since October last year, Guilded, both Imperial and Rebel aligned, and a stint as a neutral non guilded.
In short I have Played this game....I gave it every chance, I held out hope that the next publish might be the one that starts to turn the game around. They talked about the Combat Revamp in DECEMBER 2003...It is now 30 SEPTEMBER 2004. That should give you a clue as to how reliable this game is.
The content in this game is laughable. I read one review that says it gives us free reign to do whatever. Any veteran MMORPG player knows that free reign gets quite boring after a while...
The PvP system in SWG is completely imbalanced and broken, exploited regularly to grief other players. CSRs are useless in settling these disputes, and other players just don't care.
The roleplaying in this game is also non existant. RPers are rare in this "rpg" game.
The Jedi profession, which has been pumped up as the end game the ultimate profession in this bug ridden game, is garbage. Jedi are infinitely exploitable. Currently another profession Bounty Hunter (of which I had one of these as well) exploit the system to grief Jedi so badly that a High percentage of the Jedi currently in game have quit over it, canceling their accounts.
I have recently canceled all 4 of my accounts, and truly have 0 desire to come back to this game....Sadly I love Starwars, and I would love to play a good STARWARS MMORPG, but this is not it.
Save your money, toss this game in the trash where it belongs...
Extremely addictive game.

Gameplay: Not sure what I give gameplay, it is so differant from any other game in the options you can do that, that in itself is a 10. You want to hang in the cantina and that's all you do, you can.... and get xp if your a entertainer or chef/bartender. You can hang out in the med center and wait for pt's. You can just gather resources and craft all day. The options are many and varied.
Graphics: 10, the game is beautiful, much nicer then anything out there, nothing can come close at this time. Customization is fantastic, and will soon be the standard I think, not many will like anything less if they ever play another MMO. You can literally make your character as beautiful or ugly as you want.
Sound: There are still a few issues with sound in my mind, the music is great, but it doesn't play all the time (which may be a good thing) but sometimes it just starts, and you don't know why. And of course you have combat music. All sound is very star warsy, blasters sound like blasters, the droids sound like droids. Great, but needs a little tuning in my opinion. Also I would love to hear wookie sounds, its just wrong seeing them, and not hearing the howling.
Professions: There is a fantastic diversity of what you can do, this game I think caters more to crafters then anything else. Alot of professions still need work, but they will tweak them after release I'm sure. Many are limited by the pvp choice that the developers have made. Some are limited by the fact that there is no player space flight or vehicles. Some professions just need to be made more entertaining. I think many will be happy though.
Star wars appeal: 10, super high, its a star wars game, if you like star wars, play the game, easy as that. They are true to the game world, but if you think about it, some play styles will only act out a small part of it. You will not be Luke Skywalker or Annikin, or on par with these types of movie personalities unless you have a roleplaying PA that will act all of this out with you. Roleplaying will be like any other MMO, hard to find in my opinion. You may think you are the next coming of the chosen one, but don't be surprised when a chubby little bothan droid engineer calls you a loser noob, and to get a life.
Attention to detail: Well the game needs a little more polish if thats what you meant. The programmers did a great job, but they missed things here and there. If you mean it in the sense of how close did they pay attention to the star wars lore, well they had someone whose job it was to do this, and he did it well. Even the gungans talk as annoyingly as jarjar.
Creatures: The creatures are very nice, some are super tough, and will chase you down and kill you. Not very civilised near Coronet, but that's what blasters are for. I think the creatures are diverse, and entertaining. You may not connect with them in the same way as other games, but it depends on where you go and which ones you meet.
Overall rating: Well there are things that I don't like about SWG that have to do with design decisions. I would have loved a better PVP view then the one they took, which is sad in my opinion. Single Character servers is just a copy, bilking players for more money, its already the most expensive MMO, and yet you will not get the same options as other MMO's. SCS will not save the player economy, and there will still be what everyone considers griefing, in my opinion, SCS is just a greedy move (probably more a corporate decision then a developer one).
But enough with my complaints about the development decisions. I will play the game, the game will hopefully be alot of fun. You can almost look at it as a tool that they are giving to the players to do with as they will. I hope players will get into it, and make it fun for themselves and each other. If you run around expecting an involved story to unfold before you, it won't happen. Everyone knows the story already, this is set after episode 4, and there will be no amazing historic changes. You can interact with many of these characters, but not affect very much.

This once was a thoroughly enjoyable game. The new changes to the system that came Nov 15, 2005 make this a laughable MMORPG. There are still MAJOR issues with lag (less than 10-30 FPS). The alot of the game still remains bugged. The combat system is slow and simple. If you have played any other online games, don't waste your money or time on this one.

I played...note the past tense...this game for close to 9 months and loved it until the Combat Upgrade was introduces just a few days ago. What was once a fun, enjoyable game has now been turned into an exercise in futility and frustration. If you want to save yourself both of these emotions and a little money then avoid this game like death! If by some chance you like screaming at your computer, pulling out your hair and getting nowhere fast, then this game is right up your alley!

MMORPGs always attempt to build worlds that are immersive, seemingly real. Star Wars Galaxies moves up a notch from all previous games by making characters VERY customizable. So very much so that if you were in a room of 100 player Wookiees, chances are you'd not see any 2 alike. The character creation process involves a lot of choices, but all are easy to do and as you tailor the looks of your character, you get an instant preview. For those who want to just move quickly through the process, you can click a "randomize" button.
SWG also has a vigorous player economy. Everything from food to weapons are made by other players and available from a central marketplace much easier to shop than EverQuest's "Bazaar." You don't even need to meet the seller in person, or even have them online at time of purchase.
SWG features all the familiar alien races you've seen in the movies, plus some new species you've probably not seen before. It has varied and diverse planets, a wide variety of places to see, an easy way to begin "missions" that you can do solo or join together with friends to accomplish, and of course the Rebel and Empire sides to the civil war... you can elect to choose sides or play neutral. For those who like to pick a faction but do not particularly like Player-vs-Player conflicts, you may elect to go "covert."
This is the next generation MMORPG, built on a lot of valuable lessons learned over the years from successes like EverQuest, carrying it forward to a much better and more exciting set of possibilities. This actually inspired me to quit EQ in favor of playing SWG!
I was not a huge fan of the Star Wars universe, but found myself very compelled and entertained by the intricate crafting, constructing, and unique character profession building in this game. If you even THINK you might enjoy playing in the Star Wars universe in an MMORPG, you cannot miss this!
