This game used to be cool, and one of the Best MMO's out there.
However, in the past few months, Sony Online Entertainment has completely scraped the original game coding and rewritten it from scratch.
There used to be 30+ professions to play, and players used to be able to mix them and be hybrids.
Now there are only 9 professions, and players are stuck in their jobs... You wanna be a Smuggler, great your a smuggler, only there is no smuggling existent in the game... and you can't play your favorite Stars Wars musical instrument anymore in the Cantina's... as a side job.
The Combat System in the game has been overhauled at least twice in the last few months, the original system completely scraped and re-coded from scratch.
All these changes to the game are forced upon the players by SOE, and the players have to download them from SOE's servers to make sure their installed version is up to date with SOE's version.
Some of the downloads take hours, some even days for Dial Up users. I have to burn all the downloaded updates into a CD or DVD for a friend of mine, and mail them to her because she gets them quicker that way.. because her Dial Up takes 36+ hours to download the biggest updates, and she can only let the download run for a few hours a day.
The game, at the present time... November 21st, 2005... the Game sucks. SOE keeps promising changes to make things better, but they're either not coming fast enough for the players... or they just never come out with the cxhange at all... Smuggler's have been waiting 2 years now for the "promised" ability to be able to Smuggle in the game... Players are cancelling their accounts left and right.
SOE, on the day of their latest, and largest recode of the game... two weeks ago, Fired their Community Correspondent (Tiggs, a very popular person with the players) who is their voice between us the Players.. and them... because they didn't like what she was telling them what we were saying about the changes.
The game is supposed to be set in the timeperiod between the first two, Original Movies... Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back...
Yet LucasArts is producing the Expansions for this game and they keep pushing in Episode II and III content... instead of content designed for the correct time line. Not only that, the new Clone Wars Content... is far better then the current timeline content... which supposed to be 20 years more advanced.
Jedi's... You wanna play a Jedi... this should be called, Star Wars: KOTOR Online. The Jedi Population is out of control and it was SOE's biggest mistake to allow players to become Jedi's... They should have left that as a rarity in the game, only had a few NPC Jedi's like Luke Skywalker in the game, as novelties for offering special Quests...
But no... they wanted to let players be Jedi's as a selling point.
How many Jedi did you see charging across the Hoth Battle Field with Luke, to take down the Imperial Walkers?
In Star Wars: Galaxies... there will be several hundred of them out there on Hoth... if SOE and LucasArts ever gets around to adding Hoth.
They're too busy adding Episode II and III content like the planets Kashyyyk and Mustafar... speaking of which, if you're a Jedi then you can go to Mustafar and help save Obi Wan Kenobi's ghost; whose "lost his way" ... how lame is that?
Now, they can't remove the Jedi from the game like they should.. because they hyped up being Jedi so much that "everyone and their mother" has one, or has played one... and would cry, bitch and comlain if SOE removed them.
SOE is "claiming" all these changes are making the game feel more "Star Wars" like... however within the last two weeks they have destroyed the in-game player economy, destroyed the orininal 30 Player Professions and redesigned 9 new ones... removed the ability to play a Hybrid Profession.. and turned the game into a massive online FPS that seems like it is based off of the KOTOR Timeline, instead of the Timeline it is supposed to be based off of... and ruined the combat system.
Do not buy this game.
If you want to play a Star Wars game, go play one of the Console Games like Star Wars: KOTOR series... or the new BattleFront series.
At present, this is probably one of the worst Star Wars Games ever made now.
It is all thanks to mismanagement and bad design ideas at SOE and LucasArts... who both seem to think they can use this game to completely rewrite all of Star Wars history.
Maybe, someday in the future they'll get smart and fix this game... but for now... George Lucas ought to be ashamed of this game, it is an embarrassement to the Star Wars Universe.

If you want terrible customer service, buy this game.
If you want to left click until your wrist hurts, buy this game.
If you want shallow and uninspiring gameplay, buy this game.
If you want hours upon hours of your play time thrown out on a whim, buy this game.
If you want to feel neglected and abused, buy this game.
In all honesty, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. The rest of the reviews speak for themselves.
Horrible...pay to be a tester...

This game is the worst bug-filled disaster I have EVER had the disappointment to play. Not only is the monthly subscription the highest I have seen (15.99) but there are too many HUGE bug. We are not talking just small glitches, but big technical and human errors, like; disappearing items, teleporting characters, rollbacks, unannounced server shutdowns, etc. And to top it off the publisher is not very responsive to their customers.
Oh, that is in addition to the lousy Player-vs-Player action, the unbalanced characters, the crippled professions (classes), the unfinished quests (missions)etc. Basically , this is an unfinished release.
I really wanted to like this game. But, I didn't. Save your money, I wish I did.

That's not a countdown. That's how the ratings of this game have dropped. It WAS the best mmorpg on the market. Then it slowly developed problems with game play and what not. Small fixes would be made, on occasion large ones. They would usually just be a band-aid on the wound, but would never fix the problem. They had many options to to do and to fix the issues, but they decided to scrap any fix, and just replace the game. So basically its a New Game, in Old SWG Clothing. It has been dumbed down to the point where it is on par, at best, with the rest of the lower mmorpg's. It was once the most complex, unique game out there. Now it is mindless, takes no planning. It's tactical skills are more about "should I push F6 before F7" and rely on what instant buttons you can push, as oppossed to building your character up over long periods of time and fine tuning it to your individual wants.
The Developers took a Great, Great, dare I even say "The Best" game ever (in my opinion) and not only drove it into the ground, but hit reverse, backed up and dug it in farther. If you are under 13 this might be the game for you. If you are an older Star Wars geek dating back to the 70's. This was once your dream game. Now its not.
The Devs have ruined this game stay away

I have played this game since launch and have recently quit due to highly protested combat upgrade which sucked the fun out of this game.

This used to be a great game, original, entertaining and diverse.
Now it is just a shell of every other game out there, except full of bugs. Save your money on this one, perhaps go with World of Warcraft, or FFXI. atleast those ones work well

there is no one point at which i could even possibly think to begin, but i'll give it a whirl. i will start with crafting, i started the game as an artisan. i continued to create in-game items that could be used by myself and friends for over a year. now i have since turned my back on the craft because all of the super resources i have spent the better part of the last year collecting and saving are worthless to me. why use the highest quality resources if i can get the same crappy result with mid-to-fair resources. i must point out that this change came with what SOE called a "Combat Upgrade". im no rocket scientist, but where in the phrase "Combat Upgrade" is crafting overhaul mentioned? the promise of more armor and more weapons was something i looked forward to, but that was ruined when i found that the only new armor is factional. all of the old armors that we had all grown bored with are still the only armors in the game, just that now they are only usable by certain professions.
now i will turn my review to the newly pushed "CU" and how it has made combat "a popcorn and cotton candy show" for children. new icons i can handle, just takes some time to learn and recognize. overall the combat experience has taken a dramatic turn from fun to frustration. solo adventure was one thing that myself i did not prefer, but i did enjoy the fact that if my in-game friends were not online i could find some things to do to earn experience. now that is almost totally a thing of the past. i admit that combat needed some attention and perhaps some restictions, but a total game changing update was not called-for.
this is my final paragraph and i know i haven't nearly covered enough to satisfy myself, yet typing this only fuels the fire of anguish i feel. if SOE were a pumpkin pie with whipped cream(which i love almost more than life itself) i wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole after the blatant disreguard and neglect they have shown me and and my fellow SWG players. from now on before i buy it i will make sure SOE does not appear on the package. im not trying to turn any potential subscribers away just wanting the potentials to know what kind of service they are paying for before they invest time and money into a game that has
a reputation for ignoring their customer base.
...and a small note to those few reviews that are planted by SOE personel....don't lie to these people, tell them the truth about the polls. stop deleting forum posts that are merely pointing out flaws in your "new game". you may have fooled me once(shame on me) but you will not fool me twice(shame on you)
BOYCOTT SOE(imperial scum) FOREVER!!!
SOE AND LUCAS ARTS HAS COMBINED TO RIP PEOPLE OFF!

Dont be fooled by the cover of the box or the title of the game. This is not Star Wars....Sure there are some references to Star Wars themes like a few storm troopers here and there...some Mon Cal who is a rebel recruiting people to join the rebellion, and being able to see jabba the hutt...but the game lacks real definition and accuracy. After playing the game for 4 months, I have become a bounty hunter, creature handler, and a medic. I am rich and have most all the stuff in the game that would make people envious, but what I've realized is the treatment that the Devs and CSR treat the players.
They treat us like we are stoopid little jawas. They obviously never saw the original star wars films and have no love for the genre. In fact, Han Solo is the same height as a JAWA! OMG! I couldn't believe it! There were times when I counldn't log on and that the starwarsgalaxies forums were not running.
As of now...I am banned from the forums. Why? Well, I don't know....I just checked my messages on the forums one day and found myself banned. Great. Another one of SOE's charming way of tellingme they are making me beta test the game for them.
The game is still in beta mode! Do not buy this game! It will drive you crazy. The frame rates never gets over 30 fps and frequently falls to 1 fps. I ahve a geforece fx 5900 ultra 256 mb ram and I get at MAX 29 fps. That is unacceptiable at 1024 X 768 resolution.
The content is boring and repetitive. The game focuses on being a power gamer and there is a lot of boring grind waiting for you if you buy this game.
About 80% of the missions are broken...meaning that if you take a mission and travel 2-3 kilos out of town and finally get there...the mission target isn't there. Great! Wasted your time.
sine the new mount and player cities patch, the game crashed a lot. Building disappear and shuttles take 10 minutes to arrive. The shuttle ticket droid still wont take your ticket after the first, scond, and third tries...forcning you to watch as the shuttle takes off making you wait another 10 minutes fo rit to arrive again.
I've wasting time and money on this game with no satisfaction to date. I was excited at first! adn played constantly only to find the repetivie nature of the game and the lack of good technical support.
for all you die-hard starwars fans out there....rent the movies and play jedi outcast...because SWG isn't star wars...more like holo wars......
DON'T BE ANOTHER SWG VICTIM!

SO MANY PROBLEMS!
The SERVERS ARE HORRIBLE. CRASH! LAG! LOST CONNECTIONS! CAN'T GET ON A-L-L D-A-Y! I'm writing this now waiting ... hoping ... praying ... to maybe get on and play a game I AM PAYING FOR.
The game is also immensely HARDWARE AND DRIVER CRITICAL. If you don't have the latest stuff and you're not PC savvy, prepare to spend many long hours with Tech Support. Then there are the almost DAILY PATCHES (that's right: you're BETA TESTING for them -- and PAYING FOR IT).
When this game works -- it'd be almost enjoyable if it weren't so TEDIOUS. Maybe you want to be an Artisan? Be prepared to dig in the gound for materials for COUNTLESS HOURS! Want to be a Marksman -- you'll have fun killing TENS OF THOUSANDS of bugs and other critters. B-O-R-I-N-G! There is NO HEROIC ELEMENT at all to this game. You're not gonna be Han Solo or Luke Skywalker. Forget it.
Do yourself a BIG FAVOR -- stay away. Me, I'm not continuing after the first free month. Lord knows, I wish I could get my money back.
This game suffers form outrageous LAG and other gameplay iss

Guys and Gals,
I dont know about you but I am getting REALLY fedup witht he LAG, even on light servers. I cant do ANYTHING in Mos Esiley (Cant spell too good either) simply because i move about an inch and stick for up to 50 seconds or so. I got inapacitated 4 times and killed twice within a foot or so of the first position I got attacked. Probably some of my fault for going back to enact revenge, and loot the body, but hey its all a game.
This game is a very great idea, but the practical application is falling very short of expectations. So far I have experienced 4 separate crashes, only one that caused a log to be transmitted, twice it just dropped to windows, no error message, nothing. Once it hung during a fight, and I found myself in another CITY! after cloning. The really bad one was when I gave my ticket to the droid at the Mos Eisely starport. It crashed my kernel so badly I had to reinstall the game!! No Log on that one either! The economy is completely askew, guns and equipment low, cloning and insurace extravigantly high. My clothes and all my stuff totaled to around 800 bucks but the insurance was over 2000!! Pardon my thingy, but that seems WAY off the base here.
I remember when battle.net got started they had some lag problems, but not this bad! And we have vastly faster modems and servers than we did back then. When Starcraft came out it had its slowdowns but that was what they were. SLOWDOWNS, not COMPLETE HANGS for over 30 seconds. Did anyone beta-test this or did you just not see how many people would jump on this bandwagon? Who dropped the ball?
Now I know that new games have bugs, but these are downright INFESTATIONS! I dont know how to type it. THe keystrokes are illogically placed, the game sometimes wont see a command from the keyboard, and sometimes the game seems to punch in commands by itself. I deleted one character that had five uncommaded purchaes at the bazzar kiosk. The NPC bad guys just gangd up on me and my friend, 2 v 12! Huh? That is a real "DOH!" Homer style. Are you TRYING TO KILL US!!! Gee I think so.
I am sorry this has become what it has, but I just plunked down 50 bucks for the game, and another 15 for one month of play. I am as you might say a little HOT!! This game is a SERIOUS letdown, more so than Metallica's new CD. IF this is the way it will play, then make the servers free of charge. I am NOT paying for jerkey, slow, 486DX servers running this game, but that is the performance I am getting from this game. Did I say 486? I meant 286!! Without a math coprocessor!
DONT BUY THIS GAME UNLESS YOU ARE A DIE HARD STAR WARS FAN!
Now for the Pros
1. Smooth textures on the graphics (When they work)
2. Highly variable character features (But that wont matter)
Cons
1. Definetly NOT Evercrack err EverQuest for Star Wars
2. Got Fast Graphics Card?
3. Got Fast Processor?
4. Got LOTS of RAM?
5. No replayability at present
6. Limited weapons and equipment
7. Huge Hard Drive footprint (2GB!)
8. Like crashes? (Even in XP?)
9. Got Cable/DSL/T1/T3?
10. You have to RUN EVERYWHERE!!...
