First off you need to understand this game has actually gotten worse with time. Hard to beleive that 15 bucks a month leads to a worse game. Just for anyone curious I have to list off the main points of what is wrong.
The combat system for the game is god awful. Five professions are super unstoppable strong, and the rest are relatively weak. The system is overly dependent on template strenght as opposed to player skill. In other words you can get by mashing one button. Then to top it off there is no variety reward. There is only one acceptable armor, and a handful of acceptable weapons. All the rest is garbage. In a game that did not have crafters that would make sense. Next on the list is the fact that the game now incorporates player powerups buffs. That are now mandatory, and must be administered by one player class. Not uncommon for a player to sit around in a city for an hour just to go out and kill something.
Enviroment, and dungeons. Sure they are huge, but there is a problem. The game has a quick fix player vehicles. That can cover a on foot fourty five minute run in three or four minutes. Part of the fun is getting there. Now you are there in an instant. On a side note it does seem they tried to make the planets very atmoshperic, but what you get is too much of one thing or another. Tattoine for example is blinding bright, and dathomir is pitch black. You will find yourself fiddling with the filters in the game alot. Just so you can see where you are going. The dungeons are almost cookie cutter in nature. Out of the fourty dungeons in the game only five or six are worth playing. The good ones are always camped by players looking to loot rare items. Add to that alot of the dungeons have spawn timers on them in the game. So you can easily go to a dungeon and wait half an hour for the creatures to respawn.
Lag the game is chopped full of it. Not uncommon to go in an area, and have it slow to 2 frames a minutes. Increadibly easy to just lockup and be helpless. This is not just an issue in heavily trafficed in game areas. It can afflict you at any place in the game.
Crafting most likely the most well designed feature in the game. Its time conumeing, but rewarding. The entire system is rather well done, but is still afflicted by many bugs. To make matters worse. You will need to collect hundreds of resources to make everything you can make. Then the crafter simply shoves a schematic in a factory and waits three hours for the factory to get done. Most items are made on an assembly line basis, and are often sold in crates or huge quantities of items. Sadly after that you have to deal with the fact that ninety five percent of what you can make nobody wants.
Professions the game has fourty titles to acheive. Not going further into the fact that many are broken worthless. Most of them can be done in under three days. Detracting from any satisfaction you might get from mastering them. Plus mastering a player class usually involves players being forced to do skills that are neither useful to the the final product, or give any real bonus at all.
The economy and items. At this point the game is totally reduced to camping dungeons for rare super good items, or doing repetitive missions over and over. The ingame economy is flooded with easy money, and nothing to spend it on. The ingame missions are not only redundant, but are drained of all fun value. People do them because they have to do them, and there is nothing else to do. It breaks down like this you go to a terminal you grab two missions in the same direction. You pull out a bike ride out kill them usually with great ease, and return to the terminal and repeat. There is no variety at all. Even the bounty hunter missions are reduced to this. You simply have to take a few steps and go to another planet to run out and kill target. The quests are equally unfullfilling being that they are the same to missions, and have absolutely no storyline to follow.
Galactic Civil War this is what starwars is all about right. Well not in this game. The pvp the fun part rarely happens due to the broken combat. There are no starwarsy events to participate in. Being in a faction rebel or imp is reduced to being able to wear a faction armor, and the imps get atsts pets. That they can only use on faction targets. This has gone on so long that neither side has any faction pride left, and its not uncommon for a player to see two opposeing overts standing and talking in the middle of a player city. Two players that are advertiseing they want to player vrs player are not even doing that.
All in all the game is majorly broken. Ninety percent of the players playing the game will tell you they are sticking it out till the game gets better. People are playing out of hope that they will actually get a starwars game. Sadly with pathetic combats systems, enviroments, and no starwars to actually speak of buying and paying 15 bucks for this game is a real waste at this time. Maybe another year and a half from now. They might actually finish this product and make it fun to play.
Also do not get blinded by other reviews with five stars. These are usually people who just started to play the game, and are overjoyed by the concept of a mmorpg. A new gameing style they have never seen. In mmorpg terms SWG is a wholey pathetic product.

This game used to be my life non stop action and fun, i would phone in sick from work, stay in on a nice day blah blah, but now i have quit my 3 accounts SOE have killed what was once a greeat game.
Worce still has been there deletion of peoples comments, the deletion of there own SOE opinion poll when it hit 84% of people rate the game poor and there lack of responce to peoples questions on the forums. Some of the worst customer service I have ever seen.
Would i recommend this game to you or any of your friends? No not in a million years, nor will i buy another SOE game again..

What drew me to Star Wars Galaxies was that it was different. With an interesting and robust crafting system, Player controlled Cities, and it's unique combat system.
Recently, the combat system was completely re-written by Sony Online Entertainment. The players had been asking for combat fixes since the game went live. Not once, not one single time did I EVER hear anyone say, "Oh we need a new combat system.". I think all the veteran players wanted some kind of balancing done with the combat.
Oh no. SOE has a history of lousy Customer support (It has became 1000 times better since my days in EverQuest) and for either not really listening to the players or taking what the players ask for and going overboard.
This is one of those overboard things they took from the players and went crazy with.
Imagine if you will, you play a game for 2 years, gathering millions and I do mean millions of credits worth of weapons, armor, and medical supplies (if you are a Doctor).
Then one day the people who make the game announce 10 hours from now this "upgrade" is going live. That's all the time you have to do anything you enjoy then it's not gonna happen anymore. How would you feel?
Yes yes, it's just a game, but MMORPGs are different and unless you play them (even some of those who play them have no sense of community) you have no idea how special the games community can be or how attached you get to your characters.
So now, after the CU (Combat upgrade. lol what a joke name), our combat is just like every other MMO out there. It's basically EverQuest/EverQuest 2 in space. I'm not gonna say it's World of Warcraft in space because that game is actually fun for more that a week.
This Combat Upgrade (every time I say it I start getting nauseous) has down graded the system to a dumbed down, cookie cutter system of combat. Anything a couple levels higher than you will smoke you fast than you can say "Boba Fett wears combat boots".
Now, if you like generic combat systems (Read - EQ EQ2) and don't mind having to group to kill almost anything a couple levels above you, then this is the game for you! Have fun, enjoy the bugs. Oh? Bugs I say? Yes, this game is riddled with bugs. Client crashing bugs, space combat bugs, housing bugs, waypoint bugs, bugs bugs and more bugs. The list goes on, but none of it is getting fixed. Instead we get the new combat system which is heavily buggy itself (Seriously, it needed at least 2 - 3 more weeks of testing before it was even close to ready), an expansion based on Episode III (The movie coming out in May. For those that don't know) when the game is set right after "A new Hope" (The first Star Wars Movie, you know, the old one).
So if you don't mind bugs galore, generic combat, gimped crafting, being forced to group, a so-so game engine (SOE's gaming engines are always a bit bloated), and not being able to wear armor as a crafter (The new system won't allow you as a crafter to wear armor, so you can check your harvesters. Many of the top notch resources are typically on some of the most dangerous planets. So it's now a game feature you have to depend on someone (hire them) to protect you.), Massive lag causing "Spell" effects (Yes they added all kinds of ridiculous effects to combat and even when you get on and off a speeder!), seriously gimped classes, and finally the ugly crayola sesame street icons. Then as I said, this is the game for you!
To be fair, there are some who enjoy the new combat system and I hail them for their bravery in defending the CU. They should be heralded because more people hate this "upgrade" than like it. They braved the storm and are continuing to play and good for them, honestly. I hope someone likes it because there are 12000 people plus that don't. I doubt the game will come to a crashing halt but I don't see much longevity in it. I'm not an expert though so what do I know? :)
Enjoy!

I've been playing 4 accounts for almost a year. Star Wars was a whole world experience, where one could do more than simply fight. The latest upgrade has ruined the experience for me. They have changed it into a game like all the other MMPORGs out there. I played Star Wars BECAUSE of the differences. Changing Star Wars into a "sci-fi" version of EQ2 or WoW has taken away all the reasons I loved the game -- most notably being able to immerse myself in a whole world, not just a game.
Do yourself a favor and play World of Warcraft or a first-person shooter game if that's how you want to play. Sony Online Entertainment has ignored its user base with these changes. Four accounts cancelled.
A galaxy truly, truly ruined...

Brawler classes being forced to use Skill Points that have nothing to do with their profession from Brawler's skills, why do I say this? As a Master Swordsman, 2-Handed Swords, I have to have the 1-Handed tree in which there are no modifiers for 2-Handed Weapons. This applies to all four Brawler Classes, meaning you need a tree that does nothing for you other than waste Skill Points that can be used elsewhere to improve your character. Why was this done? Most likely because all Ranged Professions require not only their basic tree from Marksman but also Ranged Support. What this means is the same Skill Points are used to be either a single Master Marksman Elite Profession as a Brawler Elite. I understand this concept but at least the Marksman get modifiers from the Ranged Support tree that help them no matter what they choose. They should have added modifiers for the other professions that the trees are required for instead of making them just Skill Point wasting trees.

I loved this game from day one almost 2 years ago and went through all the changes, but the CU I cant stomach anymore, I gave it a shot and sure if you like grouping with friends Im sure it might be fun. But all my friends have already canceled and tried making new ones and they hate the game now too and cancel and trying to solo and get xp has become impossible now. I have a Jedi too and they forced us to have to group now if we want to gain xp so now we could be hunted consistently by BHs. So unless this game goes back or gets a major overhaul again. Dont waste your money, this is still a beta and shouldnt be paid for or have a monthly fee. Ive gone to Guild Wars (no fees).
Don't buy this

The developers of this game have done just about everything to alienate their customers. Just about every update to the game has introduced as many bugs as corrected bugs. They have announced updates that have never come to pass. They have made changes to the game that make your character obsolete. There have been bugs in the game that have remained unresolved for years.
Simply put, don't waste your money on this piece of garbage.

As a beta tester of SWG, I feel this is one excellent MMORPG. For any star wars fans or for an traditional RPGers, I'd highly recommend this game. It's fun, exciting, the graphics rocks (especially when there's a bug and NPCs are naked, hehe), and the game play is definitely long lasting.

I'm a 29 year old veteran of MMORPGs....and SWG so far is a Bust... Why? well, I played Beta...as I have played many MMORPG Beta's....and... well.. SWG as it is, has NO Content...and there is NO High End Game. The Official SWG Forums are splattered with irate customers... it's nearly as bad as AO's launch and the current state of affairs is leading SWG to a almost AC2 fall from grace. Again, I played Beta...and Screamed, pleaded and begged them not to release the game for another 6 months becasue of the issues still at large... Do yourself a favor and WAIT at least 6 months...I and many others have already canceld our subscriptions for now.. including my 2 roomates.. I may try again in 6 months but then again, World of Warcraft may be out by then..and a fair comparison of SOE release's VS Blizzard releases has me wishing WoW was out now. and I LOVE SW.... but SWG..and Empire Devided...the only thing devided is the player base from anything FUN.
