A month or so ago, I would have given this game 5 stars, no contest. Unfortunately, Sony Online Entertainment, the idiots that developed and maintain the game, came up with an idea to make the game "better". About two weeks ago, a new patch came out for this online game called the "combat upgrade" or CU. Granted, combat did need to be tweaked a little. Certain professions in the game were overpowered and some skills and moves where almost impossible to counter or defend. But this new CU completely changed the game! I won't go into too much detail, but lets just say the FUN is gone. The game no longer has a Star Wars feel, and instead, feels cartoony and childish. Day by day, the people who love SWG are leaving. Pretty soon, there won't be anyone left. If you're interested in a MMORPG, try Guild Wars. SWG is a sinking ship. :(
If youve seen one...

Read anyone of the vet reviews who have played SWG for over a year like I have.. with 3 accounts.. and youve read them all. Everything they all say I would say about the new CU, so I have very little to add. Its all true, the game is now ruined, not that it was a very good one to begin with, having seen very little improvements and no bug fixing in the year I have played. Save your money and play something else like Guild Wars or World of Warcraft.
Combat Upgrade Killed the game

I have been a player in SWG for close to 2 years now - I opened my account the 1st week after launch. Over those years, I have witnessed the steady decline of the game. SOE had a clear vision and I latched on as I knew that was what we all wanted. Maybe it was the Star Wars fanboy in me that made be believe...I wanted to believe!!! Anyway, I suspect that the corporate masters pushed hard to get the game on to the market and the developers have been working hard to patch and patch and repatch the game ever since.
With the Combat Upgrade(CU), I figured they had finally fixed all the problems - bad character names (l33t d00ds, Ima Forcesensitive, etc.), limited high end game content, jedi character invasion, quest and mission bugs, balancing and "rebalancing" of the character sets...is "rebalancing" a word?
I must say that when I bought the game, I would have rated it a 5 star for fun and a 4 for an overall rating. Today, however, with the CU, the game is not very fun and experienced people will not find the game very playable in the lower levels...
Project at a new low with latest 'update'

The long-overdue 'combat revamp' that half the players have been waiting over a year for, to resolve longstanding balance and gameplay issues, has finally been pushed out as a 'Combat Upgrade.'
Just as they did in the original release, SOE pushed the update out on a schedule determined by the marketers, not the engineers, and the code really shows it. I'd say player opinion is about 4 or 5 to 1 against this MASSIVE change to the game, that has generally dumbed it down, dumped the character-development work done by players over the last two years, and added a bunch of cartoony and extremly non-Star Warsy animation effects to the game.
I can't fathom what they're thinking, but it's a new low for this development team. Players are heading for the door in record numbers (including yours truly). Darned shame, the art and music in this game, the complex crafting system, the variety of classes, always contained a great deal of potential. But the team running this project has consistently made really awful decisions about what to do and where to go. Of the 100 or so people I knew well in the game a year ago, maybe half a dozen are left, and they all went into the game with great hope.
Wouldn't recommend it to ANYBODY. Just too many other good options out there for your gaming dollar to hitch your hopes to this falling star.
Bad Service from SOE

Just wanted to drop you all a line and let you know how terrible the service is from SOE. Got an in-game problem? Feel free to use the in-game customer service system. Just don't expect any help. Their service is slow and useless - worse than that - it's frustrating. You know, when you're experiencing a problem due to a game bug - you expect a little understanding and reasonable in-game compensation. Instead, you get cut-and-paste form responses. But really - how many in-game bugs can there possibly be in a product that's been on the market for almost 2 years?! Let's just put it this way - the latest major fix released by SOE known officially as the "Combat Upgrade" is more often referred to in the SOE forums as the "Combat Downgrade".
It's really a shame as this game - if it were even decently administered - could be one of the best MMORPG's ever created.

When I bought this game, it was great, fast, fun, and so much to do. You could make money crafting, or as a doc, or on missions plus there were thousands of people to play with.
Now the game has been completely revamped twice with dire results to the game. over 90% of the player base left the game. Sony keeps pushing for new releases to sell and never fix the bugs.
Run from this game. It is no longer playable. I spent a lot of time and effort in this game, and now everyone has left it including myself.
If was a devoted customer of the Star Wars games, I only wish I had been treated like a customer instead of a chump punk. I will never buy another game that Sony or Lucas Arts is involved with.
The Farce is strong with this one...

Star Wars Galaxies is a game of broken promise upon broken promise; ill-conceived updates, constantly shifting goalposts, bugs and poor content.
I beta tested this game pre-release and then played it for 18 months before quitting as a jedi (back when they were rare). Only one (out of 20) of my friends still play now and he only due to a 12 month subscription.
The game was originally released over 2 years ago, and in the opinion of most at the time well before it was ready. Many of the basic constituents (weapons for whole classes of characters, vehicles etc.) were missing as they were not ready in time for the launch. Content was entirely missing and the game could be any other MMORPG with a simple star wars skin tacked on in places.
Instead of fixing the bugs and adding content, the effort was directed at revamp after revamp, never finishing anything or polishing it until it shined, but scrapping and re-launching with new bugs and new problems.
Decide what you want to do with your character, spend months developing him/her along the path you want and then wait for the next publish to come along and render your choice useless as your profession changes radically, or in some cases is even scrapped.
The latest re-launch, known as NGE, scrapped the entire game and started again with a very dumbed down version losing the one redeeming feature: the diversity of characters (and the majority of players to boot.)
There have been rumours recently that SOE are to lose the franchise from LucasArts in the next year and their response has been denial stating "On our forums, we have shared early plans for game updates through Publish 34". This really doesn't say much as just prior to the release of NGE, SOE were posting details of future publishes which they knew would never be implemented.
IT was good till they tried to EQ it.

Been playing the game since Beta adn though there have been other problems, when they ignored their entire playerbase to push a complete rewrite of the game to EQ standards they ruined it. If you want to Play Starwars then I reccomend Knights of the Old republic or Battlegrounds. If you want to play EQ/WOW with Starwarsy Characters then guess you will want to buy it.
Don't waste your money. REALLY!

This game and the recent work done on it by SOE, is the single reason I will never buy another SOE product. This was once a good game, you could log on and play without spending hours looking for a group unlike Everquest or other online games, but... not anymore. On top of having a huge unfinished patch force upon the live servers, (bringing some of them down for over 24 hours) it was a patch that created huge protest and mass people saying it was not wanted. Let alone wanted in its unfinished full of bugs state. But SOE and their team did not listen. People were banned for protesting and saying they wanted to keep they old game, forum post were deleted for the same reason. To end this review, I must repeat, do not buy this game.
A Wonderful Idea Given Into the Wrong Hands

I absolutely love the Star Wars story and universe. The movies, the books, etc. I remember sitting on my big brother's shoulder's for several hours, in a multi-block line waiting when the first Star Wars movie came out. I freely admit to being a geeky Star Wars fan. I am also an avid MMORPG gamer (online roleplaying games), and have played them for years. When I had heard that they were going to make a Star Wars-based online game, I was extremely excited. Then I learned Sony was making it. I gave them the benefit of the doubt anyway and tried it. This game is extremely bad. The concepts they used (and didnt), the graphics, the tech requirements, the long term playability. Everything about this game is quite simply...horrible. Do not waste your time or money playing this game, you will regret it, especially if you're a major SW fan. Sony in general has been getting progressively worse with games for years now. They're like the AOL of gaming online. Big and quite useless.
