Yes, I could rate this in negative stars I would. Sony completly messed this game up. They did a "Combat Upgrade" and completly messed it up. Bugs to numerous to count and completly changed the way the games it played. If you buy this game be warned it will completly change again at any time. Previous to me somewhere is a post that says there are 250,000 people playing SWG. This is not true. It had in January, 175,000 people roughly. Just before the CU it went down to 125,000. Post CU I think it has been calculated that 40,000 accounts were cancelled. Thus the new wopping total of 85,000 left.
Also the person said of crafting, build what you want. I crafted for two years to find after the CU that every single thing I did changed. Every resource, ever way to create items. All gone in 48 hours. Everything I had create Pre-CU. Gone. No good. I had to delete the items. So if you want to play a game for awhile then have Sony change it when ever they feel. Buy this game. You wont recognize it in 6 month to a year.
Unfortunate changes

This isn't the original Star Wars Galaxies where you could "Experience the greatest Star Wars saga ever told -- yours." No this is where you are brought in to experience the exact same saga as everyone else, or at least everyone else in the game. No longer is there a dramatic and personal series of decisions made to pick up the skills that interest you and make your character entirely unique, now you get exactly the same skills as everyone else, pretty much regardless of what iconic profession you choose. One attack does damage, one heals, one for defense, and that's about it. Don't let them tell you that the turns have been taken out, it's still who fires first wins. All the weapons are about the same effectiveness, all the armor is the same, some is just uglier than others.
With lush textures and beautiful planetscapes, detailed and very sexy characters for guys and girls to oogle, and some very Star Wars sounds included, this game looks and sounds fabulous, but this is little consolation to the unfortunate gameplay, the user interface that covers the beautiful visuals, and the severe lack of balance testing that makes the game very unrewarding to play at even higher levels.
The opportunities you have in the game now are about following a predetermined series of quests that likely don't have anything to do with your character or how you want to develop him/her. At it's best it's become an interactive book, but with less imagination or creativity involved. At it's worst it's a waste of time and money with frustration and dissappointment lurking around every corner. The game was far far better at launch than it is today, and I consider myself lucky to have had 2 years of enjoyment with it, but anyone picking up the title now may consider themselves lucky to have 2 weeks enjoyment with it.
slow, buggy, boring

You are paying for a product that is incomplete. The only thing Star Wars about this game is the name of the planets. I have been playing the *game* since launch and have yet to see any intresting depth or dynamic. It tries to force players to roleplay and communicate by having insane amounts of downtown. Normally though most people just go AFK during that downtime hoping someone will heal them. The only intresting thing in the game is the crafting system but teh player driven economy means you will be spending all your time getting your own resources as there is no commodity market.
The game does have promise, but I have played enough MMOs to know that 80% of the promises that companies make is a lie. Look at Anarchy Online, Everquest, and so on... They keep stringing you along, getting that monthly fee while they finsih the game as you test it for them. Maybe in a year with something other than boring missions and inane level grind SWG might be fun to play and hang out in... as for now, steer clear.
this game will screw you out of time

ive been playing this game for over a year, i was hooked on this game until the combat upgrade came out. the server i play on was rolled back 2 days therefore everyone on that server lost 2 days worth of work. ive lost millions of credits, items i looted, skill boxs. Customer service wont do anything about it. Tells me how they would compensate the people who were on the server by giving them 4 times more of experience, which did no good since half the crap i killed gave me no experience. Bugs are worse then the game hit. This game is just grind grind grind, get screwd by SOE and take it, then repeat. Im tired of the games content always changing. making what was once the best weapon or profession in the game to the worst in a day. and the new combat system managed to do to much in one day for me to end up quiting the game. the game was fun, not no more. it just changes to much to make things that took alot of time to earn worthless.
a half-good game, killed by the cu

I've played this game for 6 months now. It's a lot of fun, and friends are what keep you coming back.
The graphics are cool, and the options are endless. Sort of.
The single greatest drawback? The development team for this game.
They focus predominantly on the Jedi system and Jump to Lightspeed, and when they aren't focusing on that they focus on combat professions. Meanwhile, many non-combat roles in this game remain basically as they did at Launch.
Smuggler is an excellent example. Those poor Smugglers have need a Revamp from day one, and have gotten nothing but more aggravation to deal with (crafting changes that are inexplicable and were never fixed).
I shudder to think what the future holds for SWG. I wouldn't recommend playing an Entertainer, as the profession is dominated by Away From the Keyboard (AFK) macro players who now make more money in-game than live Entertainers do. The Developers claim they don't like it, but they've done nothing for months now - and the professions are slowly dying.
The entire time I've played this game, I've had Musician and/or Dancer skills, because of the Mos Eisley cantina scene - i wanted to play those horns and that weird box looking thing. Or, dance around like the Twi'lek in Jabba's Palace (the one the ol' Rancor got).
After having played this game this long, I wanted to tell potential customers interested in Entertainer professions in this game (called Social professions) how much the Entertainers are ignored in the game by the Developers, seen as a nuisance by the game community (they prefer the robots to live Entertainers, mostly - due to the inconvenience of broken game mechanics for live Entertainers that were never fixed), and the horrendous treatment Entertainers got during their recent addition to the game - 1 new song and 1 new dance since Launch.
The Entertainers' main money maker, Mind enhancements, can be AFK macroed. The code is also buggy and sometimes doesn't work. Music and Dance enhancements used to work at the same time (they take about 4 minutes to apply), yet that got broken over 2 months ago and we've never heard a word on them fixing it. So, Combat players now wait 8 minutes to get in the field ready to fight, instead of 4. Yet, nothing is done. Is 4 minutes of game time valuable to you? I know all my time is valuable.
This game has development problems, if you want to do anything besides combat. Heck, even the Revamp for the Combat system got pushed aside for Jump to Lightspeed starships and letting people get their precious Jedi character.
The development team completely ignored feedback from Entertainers and pushed to Live a dance which is known to have a broken base step in it. What kind of Development team solicits feedback on new content, gets it, then never communicates the concerns brought up, and seems to just implement broken junk like we never told them anything?
Our new Entertainer Quest was supposed to go Live 3 weeks ago. The date we were told came and went, and we never heard an update. When I say never, I mean never. We just...didn't get our stuff. No excuse. No explanation. Just didn't show up. That's horrible customer service.
This is most definitely a sign of things to come - they're in way over their heads if they can't even manage to organize 1 new song and 1 new dance and communicate to Entertainers like they're...hmmm...paying customers. I don't expect much from Jump to Lightspeed, given that bugs go unfixed since Launch of SWG - and new bugs go unfixed continually.
This game would probably be best avoided completely - it has serious issues. No lie. It's a ridiculous way to get treated for spending $15 per month for a game.
Considering cancelling, pending response by Devs in the SWG forums as to why Entertainers are treated the horrible way they were with their new content. No response yet. Big shock. It's like we don't exist to those people. Is that how you want to feel in a game you pay for?

Save your money. Do not buy this game.
A little history:
Its been around for 2 years. Despite the bugs it was fun. A challenge and fun. It was a little to complex for some people but a large enough base really liked it. It was different from MMORPGs, there were plenty of problems but PVE and PVP both worked and were fun when you got to understand how to play your character.
Recently, April 27th or there abouts, the producers decided to debubt the much hyped and anticipated "Combat Upgrade". This was an unmittigated disaster for several reasons. The key ones are:
1. It is not finished. What was released really couldn't even be considered a beta version. They are actually launching continuous hotfixes after they publised the game to live.
2. The "Combat Upgrade" is a complete misnomer. Nothing was upgraded. Rather combat is now slow and accompanied by some of the most childish and bushleague animations in the gaming industry.
3. Following what could only be described as a pattern of lies by both their sales force, correspondents and customer service none of the promised fixes were delivered with the update. No major bug was addressed. Many more were created.
In general the game looks like a very poor and unplanned attempt to emmulate the much more popular World of Warcraft. Its funny, even thought WoW has a very strong user base and published a much more finished product with fine art and content many Star Wars Galaxies players never left SWG to play WoW. Many of those that did actually returned in the months before the CU after their trial with WoW expired or they lost interest in that game. Still SOE decided to push this unfavourable update on its userbase after receiving a flood of feedback from its own users and independent sources to not go through with it. The result was painfully realized by this and many other users when we finally logged on and realized that all the work and time that was invested in this game was destroyed overnight. Star Wars Galaxies is now the worst rpg on the market. It is not fun at all to play. Even for the most die hard rp'r. I'm sad to see the old version go. It was fun, despite the bugs. Things really were getting better before the combat upgrade. Now this game is horrible and completely devoid of fun.

I played this game from July 2003 to April 2005. The producers of this game broke faith with their customer base. They significantly altered the game experience and playing style. They made changes to the game that were not requested by any significant segment of the player base.
The game population has reached an all time low. Many veteran players have voiced their dissatisfaction and canceled their accounts.
Just look at the reviews here and at other gaming review sites - it takes a serious foul up to cause such an uprising. I LOVED the SWG game in its original incarnation. Now it is but a shadow of what it was.
Ask yourself - Do you really think THOUSANDS of former players would be going out of our way to express our discontent if everything was just fine? No. This is Sony Online Entertainment's "Boston Tea Party" and we are not going to take their breach of faith lying down.
Why all the 5 stars?

I am very skeptical of all the high marks for this game when it isn't even released yet. I'm in the beta currently, and I can tell you, its no where NEAR ready for lift off. If they launch it on the date advertised here then we are going to see a very shakey launch. The beta is very impressive though, everything is interactive, but that also creates a situation where a bazillion developers have to put detail to all the interactive stuff -- ugh. The commerce system is non-existant at this point, everything costs like 5 credits, so we're not even balancing that yet. I think SW is going to be a great MMO, but to rate it so high right now is ridiculous, it needs to be launched before given such high marks. -- Wookies Rule!

understand why this game has so many negative reviews: the operator (Sony Online) arbitrarily changes the rulesets so often most players are left greatly weakened and their acheivements lessened. This is a deliberate tactic to keep players subscribing -- by reducing people's effectiveness and abilities, Sony creates the need for people to keep playing longer and more often. If only to match where they once were. It is a terribly UNFAIR and defect-ridden game, where Sony prioritizes productivity (shoving out more paid-for expansions) than quality (fixing bugs and working to retain and help existing players).
Do not buy this game. Save your money and don't be frustrated.
