Sony Online Killed Galaxies

I used to love this game, I would play for 3-5 hours a day. But Sony changed the whole game with what they called an "Upgrade". It is a colossal waste of time and money now. I will never buy anything from Sony again, They have no respect for there customers and don't listen to what those who pay there salarys have to say.

Stay away from this game.

In the course of 2 months I've gone from a defender of Star Wars Galaxies, to someone deeply against this game. The game was rushed out over six months early by Sony, knowing full well the game was not ready for release. It is plagued by a lack of content, game stopping bugs, massive class and skill imbalances, cheats, exploits, and a development team unwilling to resolve these issues because they state the game is working as intended.

Many of the current fans of this game base their reviews on the potential of what's to come. The problem is, the game as it stands is simply not worth the price of the box, or the monthly subscription. Further, reviewing the game based on what's to come or it's future potential is deceptive because the developers have already broken many of their early promises. It's a shame because this game did have potential, but we're left with little more than a hyped up version of an AOL chat room.

With that said, there are those who do like this game. My sister is a die-hard Sims fan, if you liked the Sims Online, you will like the superficial social features of this game such as sitting in a Cantina for hours a day dancing while players remain silent and aim to leave as quick as they can. There is forced social interaction through-out the game which generates a mood and feeling of "I don't want to be here, I don't care about you, I just want to get this done as quick as we can and leave."

Star Wars Galaxies is not for players looking for anything remotely similar to EQ, UO, DAoC, AO, or any other massive multi-player game on the market. The developers tried taking a gamble to make something new, and fell flat on their faces. As I've said, despite the massive discontent, thousands of players canceling, and a dying community, we're left with arrogant developers and pretentious social players telling us "this game if not for you!" The game lacks any sense of adventure, quests, combat, immersivness, or fun.

Worse of all is the development team has broken the faith of the community. Despite all these problems, many in the community were willing to wait and see the game through it's potential. But it has become clear that potential will never be realized because of this development team and Lucas Entertainment. Just like in the new movies, we're left with a final product that is over-hyped, filled with over-whelming graphics, but little substance or awe-inspiring content.

Avoid this game at all costs, you will regret buying it. I've never felt this strongly about a game, and this is the first time I've taken to making sure my fellow video gamers save their money for the better. But the developers at Sony and Lucas Arts have brought this upon themselves by giving the gaming community such a terrible game.

Where is the Star Wars ???

This game had the potential to be the best game ever. Sadly, it will never reach that potential. If anything the game has gotten much worse. It no longer feels like Star Wars. The graphics took an even greater departure from Star Wars & are very cartoonish & have no place in a Star Wars game. Add to that the fact that the game is purely designed to be a continuous grind with no real content to be had & it makes for a completely lousy gaming experience. It's a chat room with semi-Starwars graphics... & nothing more. Save yourself the $15 bucks a month & use ICQ for free.

Layered with Issues

The game seems ok the start out, but once you discover the unethical practices of SOE (releasing many major updates riddled with obvious bugs), it becomes apparent that there is a serious lack of quality control. This results in a poor playing experience. The game has fairly good graphics, although it is somewhat showing its age against the current latest releases.

The quest system in this game is very poor. Virtually every quest in the game can fall within 3 categories. Run somewhere and escort a NPC, deliver an item, or go to a location to fight and kill a NPC. The quests have no real variety and get boring very fast. Supposedly, they have improved upon this in the latest expansion pack by adding real quests, but that leaves a problem. One, is you have to purchase the expansion and two is that it doesn't affect the regular game. Hence, that leads us back to the original statement I made above about unethical practices.

What should you come away with from reading this review is that if you can accept a game that has many bugs (many show stopping ones), then you may be able to cope with the game; otherwise, look elsewhere for something else with better development.

Utter disappointment - SWG = EQ and SIMs in space

It only took 3 weeks for me to realize this game is a joke. The only draw is the crafting system and the Star Wars theme. Even then, there are no creature mounts, vehicles (which almost seem like additionaly characters in the original trilogy), and several months away before any Jedi PCs arrive.

The game mechanics interfere with the game.

The game content is nonexistant. Grab a kill mission, blow up a lair, collect cash and repeat until you can afford that next gun or piece of armor.

I could go on, but I'll say this...I obsessed over this game for a long time. I had decided to build a new computer just to play with two accounts on the same server. I had all my RL friends all on the same server. But ultimately, these things couldn't convince me to subscribe.

I get more out of my free mods for Half Life than I did in 3 weeks of SWG...and I could see where the game is going.

What to do? Wait for another big title to keep me happy.

this game is a waste of your time

You are better off buying a game like WoW of Guild Wars where you don't get bonked so much by the "nerf" bat. I urge you to look elsewhere for an online game.

Sorry, no longer worth buying

SWG was unique. Crafters, entertainers, explorers, hunters, fighters, PVPers, anything was possible. You could easily mix professions and experience a bit of everything. The game was bugridden, but we kept hoping those bugs would be fixed. Gradually, a lot of them were. The long-promised Combat Upgrade, which SOE claimed would balance combat, brought an end to this diversity, however. It is an obvious attempt to ape WoW and EQ2: a level bases system in stead if a skill based one. Professions have changed entirely overnight, solo players are punished - it is now group of die - non-fighters are marginalised. No longer can you dabble, you are either a level 80 fighter, or you cannot participate. And combat is more unbalanced then ever.

The CU was released prematurely. SOE admitted in a letter to the community that it would have MAJOR bugs still in it, which would take months to iron out. Allready we have suffered rollbacks of up to 10 days. People are quitting by the hundreds. And despite of what some people claim, we are not a minority.

New Buyers Beware

I've played as a casual gamer for 6 months. You can absolutely forget about buying this game if you intend on playing solo or as a casual gamer. You will be forced to group with other characters at all times to advance in this game. Don't get me wrong, groups can be fun. But if you are paying $15.00 a month, you should be able to have fun solo or in a group. The folks that changed this game are taking your money and dictating how you play this game successfully rather than you helping to add flavor to a dynamic environment. Should paying customers have some input to how they play? Also, if you are playing oversees (military or Americans living outside the US) you will definitely have a hard time playing. This new combat upgrade forces group playing, but those of us living outside the US can rarely find other folks playing when we are on.

Accept it.

All you people who give this game a five are in denial and i hope you soon come out of it, and realize how bad this game really is now.

The Death of a Proud Game

In 1977 I was four years old. My mom says she took me to see the first Star Wars in the theater but I don't remember it. I DO remember ESB and ROTJ. And I certainly remember growing up in that time where THE toys to have were Star Wars related.

My point? I grew up waiting for a game like SWG. When it came out in 2003 I was ecstatic and I've been playing it ever since. Sure, there were always problems with it, but what MMO pleases everyone all the time? Yet I stuck with it through some very rough spots because I had faith that no matter how bad it got it would always get better. After all, who could screw up Star Wars?

Well, now I have the answer to that question. SOE can, apparently. I played EQ and watched as it devolved into a game for uberleet lewt wh*res, so perhaps I should've seen this coming. I'm torn whether I'm to blame for my naivete or SOE is for their abominable handling of the Star Wars license.

In the end it doesn't matter. Because the bottom line is that SOE has absolutely crushed its playerbase with the recent "Combat Upgrade".

It used to be that the game economy was player based. No longer. Crafters can barely step outside their houses lest they get one-shot killed by a creature that resembles a bunny. Insert Monty Python joke here, if you please.

It used to be that combatants had some solo content and wouldn't have to spend hours finding and maintaining groups. No longer. Soloing in the game is frustrating at best, impossible at worst.

It used to be that the vast majority of equipment worth having was made by player crafters. And while that may still be true, with every patch and "upgrade" it becomes less true as SOE desperately courts those for whom loot is the only thing in the game worth pursuing.

It used to be that patches and upgrades for SWG, while never bug free, at least were given a reasonable amount of time in the Test Center for beta testing. No longer. The CU was released with almost no substantive beta testing. What little beta testing DID exist made utterly no difference, as the feedback from beta testers was completely ignored.

I could go on, but what's the point, really? The bottom line is that SWG, as it exists now, is a terrible, terrible game. Buyer beware. Buyer be-VERY-ware.

I am a longtime gamer and you can trust me when I tell you that your hard-earned money is best spent outside of SOE's coffers.
