A Metal Gear Game...Need I Say More?

I can't please everybody with one review, so I'm gonna give you two:

Never Played The Original PS-one Title?
---"This is the game that created stealth gaming as we know it. The emphasis is on avoiding the enemies to reach your objectives, though enemy contact is sometimes unavoidable and will result in some bloody gunfights. There are creative boss battles, each vastly different from each other. Simply put, this game never runs out of ideas to keep the experience fresh. Like the great "God of War" or "Zelda" titles, it's an epic game, but not so big that it's overwhelming - it's got just the perfect balance of familiarity and discovery. The basic story is that six terrorists have taken over a nuclear weapons base in Alaska, and a retired covert operative named Solid Snake is sent to stop the crisis. Make no mistake, this plot is one hell of a labyrinth. This story goes from double crosses and political intrigue, to figurative subjects like the nature of love and the ethics of genetic research. Also, even though this is the third game in the 'Metal Gear' franchise, the game includes summaries of the first two 'Metal Gear' games. However, I hadn't played those, and found this game just as easy to follow. You will be doing more watching than playing, but both are experiences like no other. Give it a rental, as this game is only 8 hours tops, and see what you think."
{For more info, skip to the end of the review}

Already Finished The Original PS-one Title?
---"This game is identical to the original in almost every way. The levels design hasn't changed at all, although the graphics are much prettier. The written dialogue is pretty much the same, however the new voice-acting make it feel less forced. The cutscenes are the biggest change, as fight choreography and cinematography are given a breath-taking facelift. As many have said, the story from the first MGS merges with the gameplay of MGS 2: Sons of Liberty. Unfortunately, this makes the game much easier to beat, which is the only reason I'm giving this game an overall 4-Star rating. But that's a small price to pay, because this is a proper tribute to the PS-one classic's gripping story and innovative gameplay. In short, 'The Twin Snakes" isn't different enough in order to guarantee a purchase for the skeptical, but it's defintely worth a rental even if you've already beaten it."

An exceptional remake to an exceptional game

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes is the remake to Konami's Playstation smash hit Metal Gear Solid where we were reintroduced to our favorite super spy of the 1980's - Solid Snake. In both the original and Silicon Knight's remake, Solid Snake is pulled out of retirement and sent to a nuclear test base in Antartica called "Shadow Moses" to stop a bunch of geneticly enhanced super soldiers from unleashing the new Metal Gear. Along the way Snake is going to meet up with some people from previous missions, make new allies, and unravel a conspiracy far beyond Snake's comprehention.

Twin Snakes is straight up one of the most action packed games I played, even though you are supposed to rely more on stealth then fighting. However, you will find yourself taking on a tank with grenades, crossing a minefield, repeling down a wall while being fired at by a Hind chopper which you will later be shooting rockets at, fist fights, a massive firefight going up a large tower, and the most intense sniper shootout protrayed in any video game. Obviously you will be doing more than this, but I think I caught your attention by now =]

So the story is told, so how does the game play fair up? The basic idea behind MGS: TS is this: You run around using your enviroment to your advantage, such as pressing against a wall or crawling under a table, to avoid being seen. You have guns, like the SOCOM pistol or the FAMAS machine gun, but in all reality those are supposed to be used as a last resort. Anyway, when you approach a guard you can grab him and snap his neck, when he falls you can grab his body and hide it in a locker or other various areas. If you wish, you can go into first person mode, aim with your weapon and shoot out a camera or a guard in his head.. its really up to you. You get grenades too - chaff (which jams electric devises) and stun (which knocks out enemies for a short period of time). Also, you can do a small melee combo, which at first, doesn't look like much - but I guarentee you will use it almost constantly when in tight spots.

From the original, pixalated Playstation version, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes looks almost life like with fluid motions both in-game and in FMV sequences, realistic (for the most part) physics, and some of the best graphics I have ever seen thanks to Silicon Knight's hardwork and Nintendo's awesome Gamecube system. Everything looks magnificent, and at the same time, dark, lonley, and terrifying. The character models look so real its hard to tell if its simply a video game, and that goes double time for Snake & all the bosses he fights. The codec sequences seem a little corny, that same as it was back in the original, so that sorta sucks.. but oh well.

Musically speaking, this game has one of the best scores I have heard in a video game. It is just very catchy, and always adds elements to the atmosphere. Ontop of that, the sound effects are awesome as well. Each guard lets out a satisfying scream when he is either shot or beaten up, and the guns sound virtually like their real life counter parts. The voice acting is superb; David Hayter did an excellent job on Snake.. the same goes for the rest of the cast.

You can unlock things too, depending on what you do during the torture scene with Ocelot. If you give in and let Meryl die, then at the end of the game, Otacon will give you a stealth suit. If you insisted on enduring the torture to let Meryl live, then you are rewarded with a special bandana that gives you unlimited ammo. Also, if you take certain pictures with your camera you are given the chance to see the "ghosts" of the creators of the game in the pictures. There are other unlockables, but I will let you find them yourself.

But no game comes without some sort of flaw. Two major problems I have with MGS: TW is the excessive amount of talking (but thats found in EVERY Metal Gear game.. so we can't blame Silicon Knights) and in the movie sequences, Snake does almost impossible moves. For instance, when he first meets up with Meryl, she shoots at him with a FAMAS - Snake quickly does a flip in matrix mode and the bullets miss him.. sort of lame.

To wrap it up, you need to buy & play Twin Snakes. It is, by far, the best Metal Gear game in the series. It is even better than the original.

A Worthy Remake of a Great Classic

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is Nintendo's first foray into the MGS series. (Note: The first Metal Gear game was on the NES, though.) Those who have not experienced MGS before should play this game immediately - Metal Gear's brand of stealth action is unmatched in any other series of games. For those who are familiar with the original, the game offers little new content. Mostly, the cinematics have changed a bit, and the controls and enemy AI have been brought up to MGS2 standards. The graphics are also noticibly better, although they do look a bit muddy compared to the PS2 Metal Gear Solid 2, and it certainly doesn't take full advantage of the GameCube's power. Also, the controls feel a little oversensitive compared to the PS2 controls.
Also note that although the back of the case says that this game is a blend of Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2, it is only a remake of the former. It involves the controls and abilities of the second game, but it does not include it.
Metal Gear fans can't do without this game. Neither can those Nintendo fans who haven't experienced this yet. That's it.

Another Great Game in the Series

My Gamecube has shown me the amazing graphics the system offers, but the controls are still a major battle for me. However, Metal Gear never lets me down. This version is more of Snake working alone to save the world. I have mentioned in previous reviews that my gaming skills are pitiful at best:) I love games and my skills limit me at times. In this version of Snake's story the Metal Gear gaming engine was what I expected easy to navigate, great graphics. The camera was usually okay for me however as I said I have to get used to it. Now I have played the Twin Snakes several times. Still I have yet to get more than 1 or 2 Dogtags, but the gameplay is enjoyable and even possible for people like me who aren't the best gamers.

If you haven't played Metal Gear this is a good one to start with it. It's full of references to Snake's history and moves the story further. Gamecube's version of this game is great. I'm glad I bought the system. Now, there is another series I can look forward to. I can't wait for the next MG.

David Hayter who does the voice of Snake is PERFECT! I'm glad they were able to get him again. I hope they continue using him as well as the other actors.

First off, i would like to say that i am a Major Metal Gear Solid nut myself. When I heard this game was comin out for the Nintendo Gamecube, i just had to buy the Gamecube just for this game, becuase prior i had no intention of buying a GCN. The game description is already been stated, and if u dont know anything about MGS, SHAME ON YOU. This real reason Im writing this is becuase i just can help but get annoyed when people start these pathetic stupid game console wars. Listen, people play video games for it fun factor, not because of the graphics. I admit the the graphics does draw a person ore into the game, but its actually the gameplay thats important. The people that compare game consoles on power are complete morons. heres the run down on all recent game systems. PS2 does has the power and has excellent graphics, and other complain about disk read errors, well I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY PS2. XBOX has great powerful system, unfortuantly this system does have as many great games as PS2. GameCube has great power, and the Resident Evil Series showed that. Gamecube is a great system, but most of the games ae based on " games for everyone" philosphy, so thats why most of the games for GCN for sort of kiddy, but still fun. Its all based on what kind of games your into. Again, its not the graphics, its the gameplay and fun factor of the games that are released for the games systems. I hope you fanboys get that through u thick heads. in closing, Fanboys.... do something better with your lives

Isn't it fun to play without Raiden?

Finnally back to the golden days with Snake. Not the crapy ones with Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2. Nitendo decided to make a remake of the classic beggining of the Metal Gear Solid tales. With better graphics, more gameplay controllers, and more bloodier. It is still 2 disc, but its all good.

When this game first came out for playstation, I didn't find much of it. But then when I finnally played it I simply said, good story, good graphics(for ps1 anyways) and it is very fun. The gameplay could be kinda confusing at first, but then you will get use to the controllers eventually. It then becomes addicting. The story goes as an undercover agent named "Snake" is looking for a nuclear weapon called "Metal Gear". The real object of the game is to go through every thing and not get caught. Its not a shoot everyone you see kind of game.

In this version though it looks like they changed the voices because in this version it sounds more clearer then the playstation version. Lets look at the facts:
1.kickass graphics
2.cool game play
3.great story
4.very challenging
5.most importantly (best game ever)
you definatley need to buy this.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is the remake of a classic Playstation game that I hailed as one of the best Games ever. This remake is no different. Nothing has been changed to the story. We still have all our lovable characters like Ocelot and Raven. The game hasn't lost its touch. The game still has the classic characters and all there voices back...well atleast of few of them. Metal Gear Solid Remake is a really great addition to the Nintendo Gamecube library and is a must have to any die hard Metal Gear fan. The game has new gameplay elements that were from Metal Gear Solid 2. So it's a mixture of Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2.

The game had great visuals. It's even better then Metal Gear Solid 2's visuals. It really shines the Gamecube and is suprisingly tasty and juicy..eheheh. The game has fantastic visuals on the bosses and the infamous Rex looked even better then ever. The Visuals are simply awesome. Really makes the Gamecube look good for what it is(not that it isn't). The game has a great position of camera angles. It really is good to see a game with good camera angles. Besides the Camera Angles and Visuals the boss battles are even more fun. The game has really great boss battles and there much easier now that you have first person view. The boss battles are just as good as the original too. Visuals, Camera Angles and Great revamped gameplay makes this just plain awesome....

Oh boy but now lets get to my baddies....

Ok overall this screams A+ game but man did the creators let this game go. WHAT HAPPEND TO THE CLASSIC MUSIC! The classic boss battle music are taken out and new music that sucks compared to the original are played now! Ugh I loathed the music played in this game! They took all the classic songs out! To make things worse I was more mad that they changed Mei Lings voice and Grey Fox's Voice(Cyber Ninja)!!!! How can you change those classic voices. Besides that the characters were more believable in the original then the remake!!! And the original had not face emotions!! I couldn't take it! To make things even more worse!!!....They took out the infamous "Snake?..SNAAAAAAAAKE!!" Now it's all horribly done! I really didn't enjoy any of this and Metal Gear Solid is a classic. I couldn't take it anymore! I must agree with a previous review saying that Snake looks like "Neo" I agree, what's up with that!? That just ruined it for me I thought Snake looked way better in Sons of Liberty..heck I thought he looked better in Metal Gear Solid one and I'm not even gonna get into the controlls!.. Lemmi just get to it...

Good
-Visuals are great
-great camera Control
-New revamped level desighn makes this game even more better
-The Boss battles are even better then the original
-Some cool music but not that good overall
-Some cutscenes are very memorable..
-Some character voice actors return to play there voices of the characters they once were...

Bad...oh man I might sound harsh for most of these..
-The music! They took out all the classics
-The cluncky controlls are terrible! Especially getting in codec why did they have it set up like that?
-The voice acting...Ugh Even Snake was more believable in the original then he was in Twin Snakes, What is up with Me lings voice? The cheesy american Accent was great and Some other memorable characters have lost there voices!!
-Ugh the Cutscenes?..what is up with the Matrix like moves man?!? Silicon Knights should have done a better job
-What happend to the infamous "SNAKE?..SNAAAAAAAAAKE" Now it just stinks!
-A game I was very hyped up for ended up being a stinker..

The Ugly
-Grey Fox's voice is now not the same memorable character we once knew and loved...And so many I can't keep count just look at the "Bad"..

The Game it self is 5 stars worthy but ruined by so much classic things taken out...

The game is a revamped and better looking then ever. The first person perspective, new character models, and great revamped scenarios like the battle with Rex is just awesome and I loved everything about this game but only to be ruined by so many memorable things that were in the Original. Also I must mention that they should have added some stuff like the superior Resident Evil REmake. This game should have had some added things and that is another con I had. The Extras and easter eggs are pretty lame too most of them are just Ninteno Licenced stuff like Mario ect. The game can be beatin within 4 hours heck it took me longer with the original then the remake! Overall it is a must by for few but people who were expecting more of the same like me will be very dissapointed. I remember I reserved this game and was hyped as heck only to be dissapointed when I put this baby in my GC...Man this game is overall great but also a huuuuuuuge dissapointment...

In the end I give it a

3.9 out of 5 stars...

yeah that's pretty harsh but that's what I think..Overall it is solid joy but alot of classic things were take out of this remake..

Final Verdict:From my opinion I stick to the original anytime...Still more superior then the Remake..

Lates

A remake of one of the best games ever conceived...

.. being developed by Silicon Knights (the awesome developer of Eternal Darkness and the upcoming Too Human), Konami, and Nintendo is a guaranteed recipe for success; this is a partnership of historical proportions. We all know that the original Metal Gear Solid was an incredible game, but after MGS2--even if it may have been a huge disappointment--the play mechanics seem very outdated. A remake of the original with new features like hiding bodies in lockers, first-person aiming, etc. is more than enough incentive for every GCN-owning MGS enthusiast out there to buy this. But great new features like a totally remastered musical score (composed by the genius Steve Henefin and supervised by Konami), graphics that push the GCN--a system that is inarguably techologically superior to the PS2--to its limits (with extensive bump-mapping, shine-mapping, textures much crisper and much more detailed than those of Sons of Liberty) as well as totally reworked cutscenes and a revamped script, all elevate this title to greatness, and give even those who have conquered the original reason to buy this game.

If you are a gamer and you haven't ever played the Metal Gear series then you need to start with this game right now! It truly is THAT good, the best in this genre hands down.

I've never seen bosses as interesting and likable as the ones in this game. The Boss fights alone are worth playing the game. But it's not only the bosses that make this game truly amazing, the story, the stealth tactics and the suspense will really grab you and not let go until the end and you will no doubt be wanting more and the great thing is that there are two more fantastic sequels waiting for you to experience.

I can't recommend a game enough. Play it and you'll know what I mean!

Having never played the first 'Metal Gear Solid' for the PSX I was happy Konami decided to let Nintendo port it to the Gamecube.

This is a game full of story. In fact there may only be 4 hours of game play compared to the 5 hours of cut scenes and codec dialog. Sure some of it is cheesy, or drawn out, but over all this game has one of the best stories you can find in a game.

The graphics are a huge improvement over its PSX counterpart, but they are only on par with 'Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty'. In fact I'd say they are a tad bit worse. Some of the character faces look weird up close, and the codec uses hand drawn art instead of 3D models like in 'Sons of Liberty'.

The voice acting is top notch. In fact it's hard to find a finer performance in a game. You won't find Keanu Reeves caliber acting here.... Like woah!

The controls suit the Gamecube controller quite well. 'A' is used to fire your weapon. 'B' takes care of your non-weapon attacks. 'X' toggles standing up/laying down. 'Y' climbs on objects, and is used to hang off ledges. 'Z' is held down to go into first person view. However I prefer to go into options and change it to toggle. Finally 'L' and 'R' are used to equip items and weapons. The codec is brought up by pressing Start+A, and the map is brought up by pressing Start+B.

All in all 'Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes' is a great adventure. If you can sit through the long cut scenes and codec sequences you'll really enjoy the deep story and great game play. If you can't sit through long periods of downtime then this may not be your game.
