This game needs to be a success. If a game as good as this sits on the shelves then we GCN owners have no one to blame but ourselves. This will own every Metal Gear Game ever (even MGS3.) If you only get one game this year, make it this one. Let's show all the companies that are dropping support for the GCN that they are making a mistake.

I want to first off say that the person who gave this game 1 star is crazy and don't be fooled by that bozo.
This game is great, no, amazing. The cut-scenes are beutifully rendered and are not overly long because they are extremely entertaining. Here's what I think:

Graphics 8/10: The graphics are great in this but I know that the Gamecube and Konami are capable of better (hint: Resident Evil, Silent Hill).

Gameplay 10/10: No difficult controls here, they all are super easy to use and you'll never find yourself looking at the game manual to see the controls.

Learning Curve 10 min.: As I said, the controls are extremely easy to learn.

Sound 9/10: The cutscenes and gameplay sound effects and music are put together very tight and crisp and there is no delay at all. I just wish you could hear the gaurd's footsteps.

All in all 9/10: This is truly a triumph in the gaming industry, extremely innovative, easy to learn, and pure FUN. Not to mention that the story is awsome.
Remember, buy this game and stay away from the stupidest thing on the planet, Lord of the Rings.

Great game......Hey TO THE GUY WHO SAID ITS STUPID

Hey if you think the game is stupid why the hell are you reviewing it. This game is awesome! You dont know crap about video games. AND WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU GO TO BEST BUY JUST TO SEE IF THE GAMES WERE SOLD OUT????! If youre trying to prove a point than you suck at it. Maybe if you wanted to get something thats alright but just to check if they were sold out is just plain stupid. Like you.........So why dont you go check your self stop making a stupid point.
This game is off the hook even though they didnt add anything new.

Overall a very good stealth game for the CGN.

When Metal Gear Solid was released for the Sony Playstation back in 1998, it was like nothing that had been seen before in video gaming with movie style cinema graphics and a deep tale about terrorism and genetic manipulation. In this new version, the lead character Snake has some new moves and the ability to shoot in first person mode. The graphics have been greatly revamped from the PS1 but the textures are a bit muddy and lack an overall sharpness to them. A nice looking game, but are not as good as the GameCube can display. The ambient sound and sound effects are well done and the voice acting is top-notch.

I hadn't played the original so I found this game to be very enjoyable to play and much better than Splinter Cell's method of trial and error style of play. There are a lot cut scenes, which you easily skip, but then you may loose most of the story and greatly shorten the game. If you've played the original on the PS1 from years ago you won't find much new here except for Snake's new moves and the upgraded graphics. Replay value is in going back in to collect all of the dog tags from fallen enemies and upping the difficulty settings.

Metal Gear Solid story + Sons of Liberty gameplay = FUN

It's been nearly four years since I've played the original Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation. When I heard that this game was being redone using the gameplay of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, I was as giddy as a school girl...or a flambouyant school boy. In any case, some concerns arose before the release of this game such as concerns about the voice acting that has been completely redone as well as an updated soundtrack, but ultimately this is a solid remake of a solid game.

GAME DESIGN/CONCEPT: Chances are you have never seen one single video game if you don't know what Metal Gear is, and if that is the case you should slap yourself upside the head five times. For the unitiated, here is how it works. This is a game about stealth. In the upper right corner of the screen is a small overhead map that shows enemies and their field of vision (FOV), which if you walk inside the FOV the enemy will spot you and call in reinforcements. The idea is to get by these guards without being caught, but the means to do this have been vastly increased from the old game. Lockers are present so you can hide inside of those, and you can hang from rail edges to sneak past enemies on catwalks. You can also use first person view to shoot your opposition. These were key additions to the Sons of Liberty, but along with those helpful additions are the other things that hinder your progress as well. Enemy bodies remain after they have been taken out, and if another guard spots them then they will call for backup (if necessary) and the clearing crew will search every nook until they find you (or until they give up and replace the dead guard with another, undoing all of your hard work). Simply put, stealth is the key to survival in this game.

Boss battles in this game have been made infinitely easier with these new mechanics from Sons of Liberty, especially Revolver Ocelot while using first person view. The only boss battle that I found difficult was the Hind battle on Extreme difficulty, which I will admit is the hardest in the game (and it is HARD). Another feature that was brought into The Twin Snakes (TTS) is the five (or six?) difficulty levels which accurately reflect their titles; VERY EASY is a joke of a difficulty level for people who have never played any single form of interactive video gaming before whereas EXTREME is the one that causes people to whip controllers across the room. Dog tags make a return, but unlike Sons of Liberty you do not need to get them to unlock anything; they're mainly there for an extra challenge and that's all. The demo reel, bandanna, cloak, etc. are all unlocked exactly how they were in the original.

One of the biggest revamps in TTS are the cutscenes. They are downright incredible this time around, adding onto the storyline from the original game. Believe me when I say the sequence before the Ninja fight is spectacular...but gory (parents be warned). The cutscenes feature many over the top fight sequences that would be present in a Matrix movie, and they add to the overall excitement of the game.

One gripe that many people have about this game is the length of the story versus the gameplay. I'm not going to dock a star for this because even though there is more story than gameplay, the gameplay is good enough to stand on it's own. Besides, this is a remake of the original game, and by trimming the story the developers would essentially have made too different a game to warrant the remake title (relax, the game costs ten bucks less than most regular games). And you can breeze past the codec conversations with a few pushes of the A button.

GRAPHICS: Needless to say, the Gamecube supplies graphics infinitely superior to the Playstation version, but there are some issues with blurry textures. There are some early in the game and a sparse few afterwards, but for the most part the graphics are excellently done. The 3D models look absolutely terrific (Snake looks less like the doofy goon that he did in Sons of Liberty), and some of the effects, such as the stealth suits of Otacon and the Ninja, look wonderful. The codec screens still have the drawn facial animations of the characters from the original game, rather than the 3D models used in Sons of Liberty. Slight bummer there but it was probably a better move to help preserve the feel of the original.

MUSIC/SOUND: Most of the music has been redone or remixed, and there are different combat songs as opposed to the annoying one for every boss battle and enemy encounter from the original. FYI, the music for the ninja fight is awesome, IMHO. Also, all of the voice acting has been redone. Although Vulcan Raven does not sound as cool as he used to, everyone else sounds magnificent. It should be noted that not all of the voices are the same, most notably Mei Ling; I'm glad they dropped that nails-on-chalkboard accent of hers from the old game and replaced it with that of a comprehensible human being.

CONTROL: The controls take some getting used to from the Playstation analog controllers, but when you grasp them they work perfectly and you will grasp full control of Snake in no time. One odd feature is that to bring up the codec screen you have to hold Start AND A. Just pushing pause does not pause the game.

OVERALL: Despite the combination of a goofy control issue, some slight texture blurriness, less gameplay then story, and a "tell everything" storyline that seems to never end, this is a near solid game. The gripes that I just listed are nitpicks at best, so if you're unsure about getting this game because of some naysayers who discount the game entirely because of these nitpicks, erase them from your memory and buy this game.

One of The Best games ever made...

I am one of those people who bought the origanal because of the good things we were hearing about it, and I wasnet dissapointed at all. One of the best plots ever put into a video game, mixing reality with fantasy and hitting just right. But, the graphics and some of the dialog was really outdated, so when they remade it, I picked it up quick. Some of the reasons why I love this game are as follows:

1. Villiens- This game packs some of the coolest villiens in video games. Im a big beleaver that a hero is only as good as the villien he or she is fighing agaist, and MGS TS did this perfectly.

2. Cut Scenes- With this version, you get WAY better cut scenes. Updated graphics help make this game more real, and will make it age way better.

3. Music- One of the biggest reason why this is better than the origanal is the great score with it. True, down to earth, ruthless operative music.

4. Story- This is one of the best games cuz the story is so that u dont know whats ganna happen next. Things just continue to happen and even with all that is happening, u must fight on.

The only thing I kinnda fround on is the matrix feel I was getting out of the cut scenes. But other than that, this movie is well worth the $40 price tag.

This game is awsome and is easily the best stealth game. (Pac-Man sucks snake.) It has good graphics and cool cinematics. I like the movie where the ninja kills everyone. It has an interesting plot that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's fun to Sneak in it because the gaurds have fun AI so its fun to manipulate them. I like this game.(...) Bukake Power!!!!!(...)

Not a bad combination.
Pros:
Excellent graphics
The good ol story from Meta Gear Solid, and the Graphics and gameplay from Metal Gear Solid 2 SOL
Some boss battles are easier from the PSX version, like Sniper Wolf
For Nentendo fans who waited for Snake to return to Nentendo, it couldn't have came in a better way
Cons:
Longer cinamatics, which I really don't care for
The voice acting is not as good as the PSX version
The Gun sound effects are not as good as the PSX version
the music is not as good as the PSX version
nothing added on to the game

Well despite the cons, this game in so many ways is a crazy revamping of the PSX version. I just wish it sounded the same. Those who have a gamecube, and never played Metal Gear Solid should definitly play this eye candy revamped version. To those who have played Metal Gear Solid, as long as your not expecting alot of new stuff, this is a nice buy.

peace

Memory Lane Has Had Some Renovations...

Man, what a sweet game. Sure, I beat the pants off of MGS back in the day, but I bought this game back on its release date, beat it that night, and have beaten it several times since. I can't get enough of the first MGS!

Ryuhei Kitamura has done an excellent job with the cinemas (sure, they're a little unrealistic, but then again, videogames are a form of escapism and the demos are fun to watch). The gameplay has been reworked (but thankfully untouched in the parts that count. Except for the Ocelot fight. Waaay to easy now).

And the voice acting is top-notch. Forget what everyone else says: Naomi's british accent sounded VERY fake in the original, the ninja sounded too much like the DARPA chief (mostly because they used the same voice-actor for both characters), and Mei Ling no longer sounds like an embarrassing stereotype (why does her new voice bother so many people? She was raised in the U.S.! Why would her accent be that thick!?).

So go out and buy this game. Only the most jaded of gamers will dislike it.
