After having played The Sims for PCs, I was a little worried that I wouldn't like The Sims Online. I shouldn't have!
This game is so totally addicting, just as the PC game is. I got this game for Christmas and I log on just about every day to play. It hasn't taken the place of PC game and all my wonderful expansion packs, but I give it four stars for the potential it has, which is endless.
This is the first online game I've ever played, and there are no others that interest me. The Sims Online can be engrossing, but if you're a veteran online game player, it may be a bit too slow for you in the beginning. As Maxis or EA adds more content to the game, I predict it will be just as big as the PC game.
Happy Simming!

I'm not the type of person who gets bored pretty fast, Especially for the sims. I couldn't give it a five because I haven't played it yet. The only thing that pisses me off is the tri-monthly payment. It would be better if there was one upfront payment. now every three months I have to buy a [$$$] game time card, but I can deal with that. I also heard that there is a 100 object limit. I can deal with that also.
They kick you off the game if they find out that your under 13. Just don't say your age. To me, if my parents will allow me to play online war video games they will let me play this.
I like online chat & play games. For example, Battlefield 1942. You meet people, and then try to kill them if they are enemies. Online games are great ways to meet people. Just don't say your full name to them for safety reasons.
I also hope I get married to someone! That would be funny!

This is not a fighting game.
This is a role playing world with the Sims that you control. I have found that girl's and women enjoy it the most, but a lot of boys do too.
I enjoy this alot more than the offline sims with the interactions with real people. I have met people all over the world.
Prepare to be addicted

this game is pretty cool if you like the sims series. it gets pretty boring after a while though...
You cant't get a job on the game...you need to build up skill points(which takes about a month of playing to get only one),then you make pocket money by making gnomes or solving problems on a chalk board....
they start you off with only 10k....that gets you about a 8x8 ft room with the ... stuff you could buy....
there are some good things about it though....
you can chat w/ real people...
instead of builing your own house you can move in with someone...
there are alot more reactions in the game to....you could even fart on someone...lol
i dont know...if ya like the sims you would probably like this...good luck
Brace yourself...the Sims are online...

...i was so amazed by all that you could do. there are so many new objects and interactions. hey..if people say its as bad as they claim..would it have won Best of E3 2002: "Best Simulation Game"??? i think not!! lol.
some of the goals of the game are to be the "most popular sims" or to have the most money and a successful buisness. my advice would be to start it out slow. its easiest to start out w/ a roommate. it saves you a lot of money. make sure you get to know your roommate first and dont move in w/ the first person you meet and end up hating the game. just take it easy at first and let it all sink in.
one of the only drawbacks of this game is that there is no longer a fast-forward button anymore ::sniff sniff:: ..lol. no money cheats either...you have to actually make money on your own..WOW!! WHAT A CONCEPT!! no more rosebud!!
monthly fee...ehh...?? not too bad. just keep a little jar w/ spare change..it all adds up..or get a 3 month card..very useful.
if your still a little skeptical about buying this game..i would wait a few more months until Maxis gets all of the bugs out.
over all...its a must have for sims fans alike!! if you're new to the whole sims scheme...you may not really get into it as much as diehard sims fans would.

Being a new player to The Sims Online (TSO), I had high expectations after enjoying the single player game for many years. Regardless of the various negative reviews, TSO can be a fun experience once you set your expectations before playing.
The game consists of alot of 4+ minute waits while you perform menial, vaguely informative tasks to earn cash, while balancing time you spend on those tasks with fufilling your needs gauges and training up on the skills that will allow you to gain better money for future performance in one of said menial tasks. There are tons of fun social animations, but you will rarely use them because your social needs get filled by simply hanging out and "working" in popular homes with other Sims. There's alot of this "fluff" that really has little impact on your overall goal to gain skill and money.
The game uses the same outdated engine as the original Sims, and whether you're on a T1 line or a 56k modem, you'll still have the same laggy camera and pathfinding issues. You'll need a massive 1.2gigs of drive space to install the game. The animations and sound are excellent, but you won't spend much time enjoying them after the first few hours - there's just no incentive to stop your skilling, crafting, or interrupt replenishing your needs. Likewise, rarely is any other serious player idle long enough for you to perform those actions on.
If you consider the game more like an interactive, graphically pleasing chat room you will enjoy it much more. The people are generally nice and most large areas where Sims assemble have ample services to attend to your needs (food, showers, beds, etc). Sadly it is difficult to have conversations in large groups because chat balloons stay above your Sim for only seconds, and there's no scrollback buffer in case you miss what someone said.
Skill depreciation is a big problem with the current rules in place. Unlike the single player game, you can spend hours and hours getting a bunch of skills fairly high (meaning more profit when you make garden gnomes or cook or whatever), but if you don't practice them each regularly they'll just fade away until your combined skill total is under 10 total "bars". Seeing as there's 6 skills, each with a maximum of 10 bars, you're almost forced to specialize in Logic or Cooking instead of being okay at everything.
If you enter the game with the hopes of making a fancy home in which people will flock into admire your architectural prowess and play in your hot tubs or dance to your radios, you'll be disappointed.
Owning a home is ALWAYS a poor venture at first, because you won't have enough money to purchase anything that people will want to see... your house will just be another of the hundreds of existing cookie cutter slums with below average items that you yourself will hardly spend time at, because the game rewards you for practicing or crafting with many other Sims at the same time. Thus you have to hang out elsewhere to build up a nest egg, and then build a circle of friends that will evenutally visit you in order to make your new home profitable. Note that unless you or a roommate (you can have up to 8) is online and in your home, nobody can visit the property.
If you become a roommate, you share in the income generated by a well equipped home. However, it's then your responsibility to keep the place clean - there are no Maids or Gardeners in this game. Roomates can buy items or redecorate to help the overall appeal of the property, and thankfully nobody else can sell or destroy the items you buy yourself. There's a bit of a spam problem with unselective strangers randomly screaming for roommates (i.e. your cash to buy items to make their property more attractive), but thankfully you can set an Ignore flag to people who really annoy you.
However, the game has alot of potential. EA is constantly patching the game to make it more interesting and less of a chore, and it's great fun to finally jump into the game you've played for years and tinker with the items and meet new people. For now I am content to hang out in popular areas, play with hats and costumes, skill up and make money, and chat with mostly friendly people.
I'll have to see whether this feeling will last once the game goes out of it's 30 day free trial and into the $(...)/month range.
Update: I did not renew my trial subscription. The boredom factor just got a bit too high. I will check the game out again in June 2003 to see what patches and improvements the development team has made.
Not what I expected

I played TSO for about a couple of weeks I think, but it really isn't worth paying a monthly fee for. It is a great concept and it was a great game (the original that is), but unlike the off-line version, you really have no goal except to raise your skills and make money and build a bigger house I suppose. You can't actually get "jobs" and have a "career" the way they would have you believe, nor can you really run a restaurant or other business the way you are led to believe.
For a few bucks more a month you can play a game like Star Wars Galaxies, and be an entertainer and have a similar gaming experience... only with much much more content and a much more cohesive world.
