Great new RPG

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 51 / 57
Date: October 28, 2003
Author: Amazon User

Just to start off, this game is essentially the same as Pokemon Sapphire, for those of you who are new to Pokemon. There are some differences, such as who the bad guys are and what Pokemon you can collect, but if you're just starting out with the series, don't worry about that. In the Pokemon games, you start off by choosing to be a boy or a girl, and then you get right into the game. The goal here is to capture wild Pokemon by battling them. Then, you train them so they will be strong enough to fight other trainers' Pokemon,

Pokemon Ruby is a great new addition to the Pokemon family, anyone who enjoyed any of the other Pokemon games will love this one just as much. Even if you are just starting out with the Pokemon games, this is a great way to get in on the action. Ruby has more than 200 all-new Pokemon to capture, updated graphics, new battle styles and tons of other great features.

At its heart, this is an RPG, so if you hate them, stay away from this game. Of course, if you love RPG's, this is a great game for you. The graphics are also wonderful for an RPG on the Game Boy advance. It plays just like the previous Pokemon games (looking in a 2D-like position over your character, but that's pretty good, considering this game is going to take you a VERY long to beat), but now there are added effects such as rain and volcanic ash.

The sound is (thankfully) much better than that of the previous games. The soundtrack fits the game and is pleasant to listen to (if you play for hours on end though, it can get kind of annoying, but that's why you can the sound off).

The most notable new battle mode is the battles where you can have two of your Pokemon battle at once. You can use this to get a good advantage over your opponent by using different type Pokemon together.

And then there is the multiplayer function (you're going to need a game link cable and another game pack, however). You can battle your friend's Pokemon in head-to-head battles, and even trade Pokemon with each other. You can't trade Pokemon with any of the Game Boy Color games though.

Pros:
New graphics
New battle modes
Hundreds of new Pokemon

Cons:
Can take a while to get from one place to another
Wild Pokemon get really annoying when they attack you every five seconds

This is definatly an excellent addition to the Pokemon family. RPG and Pokemon fans alike will love this game (you're going to be staying up late playing this one).

Chris's Game Reviews: Pok'emon Next

Torchic, Mudkip, and Treecko. Those are the 3 starting monsters. Wynaut, Volbeat, and Yomawaru. Those are other great monsters.
This game is the greatest one yet and Groudon on the cover is very cool. Pok'emon Sapphire has different Pok'emon though. Will they come out with something like Crystal again? This new game features:

2-on-2 battling for trainers and they can both play their Pok'emon at the same time.

You can also see your shadow on the beach, in the water, and in a London type- setting.

100 new pok'emon!

Play as a silver headband wearin' guy or a hot girl!

You probably won't get bored off of this one like the last ones.

So Many new things... or are there?..

With the new Ruby and Sapphire games coming out everyone's rushing to buy one... Or are they? Is this game worth getting? Well, lets look at the new things.. There are new 2 on 2 battles. Unfourtuanly, you can only do this in trainer battles and link cable battles(up the four people can battle now!). There are nice new effects like leaving footprints in the sand when you walk, rain on some routes, sunlight when you release the legendary, Groudon, trainer lookup(look at almost all the trainers you've battled and see if they want to battle), pokemon contest, special fruits, you can find latios or latias(depending on which version you're playing) in the wild random after beating the Elite 5, legendary Kyorge(only in sapphire), legendary Groudon(only in ruby, new snake legedary, 3 rock, steel, and ice legendarys, secret bases where you can put up to 16 rugs, dolls, and other things you buy, and more.
I really recommend this game even though you can't catch most of the old pokemon(Bulbasaur-celebi, etc), but there is a way to get them...
Wait and see...

The First Gym

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 26 / 28

As you know, in the new land, there are also new gym leaders. The first leader is Roxanne. She likes rock types. When you battle her, the first pokemon is a Geodude at level 14. It's pretty strong. Her second is a level 15 Nosepass. Yes, Nosepass. Both pokemon have a new skill, rock tomb. If you win, you get to keep rock tomb, and receive the stone badge.
If you chose Treecko, you may have slight dificulty, but use absorb, and make sure you get rid of Nosepass quickly, it can cause damage quickly, and she likes potions. If you can evolve it before Roxanne, it will be stronger.
If you choose Torchic, here are a few words. MUST BE EVOLVED!! If Torchic is unevolved, it won't have enough power. And when Torchic evolves, it becomes fighting, so rock attacks will do less damage. Also, teach it double kick. That is the only attack that is strong against rock Torchic would know.
Mudkip you don't need to train as much, but still train. Try and evolve it like the others. It will become stronger against rock, and will have a lot of power.
This gym is so fun. It's a lot harder than Kanto, and much more than Johto. This information is all accurate. It has been played on the English version.

Many people do nothing more than critisize Pokemon because of its reputation of a childs game. In my opinion the movies and episodes are what has not grown with its viewers. However the game is completely different. The first Pokemon games are what Made the Gameboy and Gameboy Color consoles so popular at first. I know this because these first Pokemon games are what enticed me to buy Gameboy, then crystal version came out and I wanted it so bad that I baught Gameboy Color just to have it. Now I purchased a GBA for the next two games and am surely planning to buy the Gameboy Advance SP so I can play these games in the dark at night.
The two games comming out now for GBA are going to be so superb and stupendus that I am going to buy them the day the come out (maybe not at Toys R Us). These games will have so much more capabilities than the first few games.
#1.There will be shadows to your character
I know this is not that exciting if your used to other consoles like Xbox and Gamecube or even Playstation 2 but for GBA this is a miracle.
#2.Reflections in water.
Again this is amazing the way they increase graphics.
#3.foot prints in changing seasons.
Just imagine you walking around in the winter time with footprints being left behind you in the snow.
#4.100+ pokemon and allows 2vs2 battles with 4 players at once, each controlling 1 pokemon making a 2vs2 with 4 people
Incredible advancements to the pokemon games. Im almost willing to bet these games will also keep life time. So when it is night in life it is night in the game and when it is day in life it is day in the game. Allowing you to only catch certain pokemon at night or at day making it more strategic and making you stay up late at night playing pokemon.
Overall I believe this will be one of the best pokemon games ever!

Gotta catch 'em all... again!

Just when you thought it was safe to own a Game Boy Advance, Nintendo announces a brand new Pokemon title.

What we have learned is that -- in addition to a hoard of one hundred new monsters being added, as per the usual -- four player GBA link cable play is being tucked in. How do four players Pokemon at the same time, you ask? Easy: two-on-two battles. With four players (and monsters) involved, the battles get that much more hectic. For that matter, just two players can choose to engage in "Double Battle". That means even with just two trainers present, you can send out two Pokemon at once to battle in a four monster free-for-all.

Beyond that, the Pokedex has been entirely disposed of. It's been replaced with the Pokemon Navigator (of course, it's known as "Pokenavi" for short.) Inside the Pokenavi's copious confines you'll find more than a simple list of Pokemon. You'll be able to see a map of the game's world, and check out what's in different towns you've visited so you can refresh your memory without trekking back there to discover it all again. In a section of the Navi dubbed "Trainer Eye", you'll be able to review your win and loss record, and the inclinations your Pokemon display during battle. You'll be able to check strategies and schedule rematches with other characters.

It seems like Team Rocket finally hung up their hats, because this time you'll be battling two syndicates of Pokemon mischief: Team Magma and Team Aqua. Team Magma will trouble players of Ruby, while Sapphire fans will have to contend with Aqua. The stories of the two games are more or less the same, otherwise, though.

With the addition of new modes, new monsters, and all-new game interface options, it sounds like more than a little care is being put into Ruby and Sapphire to assure fans of an extremely enhanced Pokemon experience.

Out with the old

How can you ditch Pokemon? If it were for little kids they would have olkadotted cats and striped dogs as Pokemon. But they dont so this game was meant for bigger kids. First I will give you some bacround on the game.

You just got off your moving truck, and now you are in Little root Town, a new town in the new world of Pokemon, Hoenn. Your Mom tells you to walk for a bit. While you do, you run into Proffesor Birch, who is being attacked by a wild Pokemon, which I think is a Zigzagoon, needs your help. He droppes his pouch, which has three new Pokemon in it. Treeko, the grass Pokemon, Mudkip, the water pokemon, and Torchic, the Fire Pokemon. Chosse wisely, you get to keep the pokemon you use to save Professor Birch with.

But overall this game is awesome. Who cares if you cant go back to Kanto and Johto? When I played my Gold, Silver, and Crystal, thats when I thought the game got boring. And a slashed Pokedex means less to catch! But I know GBA can produce better graphics than this.

Another cool feature is that you can battle 2 on 2 with a friend! And the animations have been spiffed up a LOT...

A must have

I have been playing the JPN version of this game for 30 hours now. It is definetely a quality game.

Aside from the introduction to 100 new Pokemon, the greatest thing about this game is that it establishes a lot more strategy. Moves such as "attract" have now been severly overhauled into permanent status effects. Also, many of the new Pokemon pertain to 2 different classifications; combos such as Dark/Ghost and Ground/Psychic make their appearance in this game. Many of the new Pokemon also will inflict a status effect(ie. paralysis) by attacking them or knocking them out of battle. The Battle Tower has been revamped in this new addition and is sure to provide hours of challenges once the main adventure has been completed.

If you plan to buy this game for cutesy Pokemon, save your money. With exceptions to Luriluri, Plus & Minus, Torchic and Mudkip, the majority of these new Pokemon are very unattractive. Many of the familiar faces, such as Tyranitar and Blissey, are not in this game. Although this will force you to adapt to the new characters, many fans might be dissapointed to learn that they can not use their favorites. Neither Sapphire or Ruby can trade with earlier versions, so please keep this in mind when you purchase this game(Ruby & Sapphire can trade between each other).

2 vs 2/4 vs 4 battles are rather different and will make the player come up with a new strategy. While you can choose which Pokemon your attack will hit in these battles, attacks that effect the enviroment(ie. E-quake) will not only hit both of your opponent's Pokemon, but also your own. You'll need to think twice about using some moves, especially if your partner Pokemon is weak to a certain element attack.

As for Legendary Pokemon, the only ones you'll be able to catch in this game are Latios & Groudon(Kyogre & Latias can only be caught in Sapphire). Despite the rumors, Celebi, Mewtwo, Entei and all other previous Legendary Pokemon can not be caught in Ruby or Sapphire.

Overall, this is a great game. It offers enough challenges to keep anyone into the game for hours and will draw any player into the world of Pokemon immediately.

Introduction
In 1995, Nintendo had released the first two Pokemon games Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. The series was extremely popular in Japan, and was released stateside in 1998, with the release ofPokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. The series started off slowly, and the popularity boomed in the beginning of 1999, starting with Pokémon trading cards, clothing, a Saturday morning television show, and more. With the large userbase of Pokémon, Nintendo released a special edition of the game, also known asPokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition which tried to emulate the television show, where Ash (the main character) would start off choosing a Pikachu, instead of a Charmander/Squirtle/Bulbasaur. It was extremely popular. It was the best selling game of 1999, selling over 1.1 million units in it's first week of release. Then, in 2000, Nintendo and Game Freaks released a brand new game called Pokémon Gold and Silver. This game boasted a whole new adventure, starring over 250 Pokémon, a time system, and a new character. The game was extremely popular among the younger children, and even amongst the older teenagers who played the Red/Blue/Yellow versions. Then, in the summer of 2001, Nintendo and Game Freaks released a special version of Pokémon Gold and SilvercalledPokémon Crystal version. The game wasn't as popular as the Gold and Silver versions. Yet, it still sold well. In 2002, Nintendo and Game Freaks released Pokémon Stadium 2, the sequel to Pokémon Stadium released in March 2001. Now, 5 years later from the release of Pokémon Red and Blue , Nintendo released brand new adventures, Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire. Now, I will review the Ruby version of the game, which is the version I own.

----------------------------------------

Gameplay

If you have played the original Pokémon games, the gameplay will be basically the same. You walk around with the D-Pad, do actions with the A button, cancel Actions with the B button, pause the game with Start, register an item to Select. L and R have no use, unless you want L to be A and R to be B. The battle system has been greatly improved. Now, you may do a 2-on-2 battle! This means when you fight two people, or 4-way battle with link cables, you use the first two Pokémon in your party are used in battle. It's very cool indeed. Don't forget, this game features 386 Pokémon, so you'll have plenty of time playing this game. There are 8 badges to collect, like all of the other games.

Graphics

If you have seen any screenshots of this games, you will have definetly have noticed the upgrade of graphics. There is now shadowing, footstep marks, water movements and reflections, etc. The battle graphics are very good, they have the usual movements of when the Pokémon attack, etc. The graphics are fair, but it's not the best seen on Gameboy Advance. It's not the best graphics seen on GBA, but near it.

Sound

There isn't many different sound effects from the original Pokémon games, but the music of the cities is great. Every Pokémon has it's own cry, which is over 386 different sound effects just for the Pokémon. This is about the same kind of sounds you would hear on the Super Nintendo.

Lasting Appeal

This game will last you at least 35 hours, and if you take the time to train a perfect Pokémon party, battle with all your friends, and collect all 386 monsters, you will easily clock hundreds of hours on this great game. Battling and trading definetly give this game a lot of lasting appeal.

Gameplay: 10.0
Graphics: 9.0
Sound: 9.0
Presentation: 9.5
Lasting Appeal: 10.0

Pokémon is coming to the GBA with more battle-options and of course more pokémon.
You start in Littleroot Town, where you'll get a pokémon from professor Birch.

You can choose from

-Treecko, gecko grass-type pokémon.
-Torchic, fire-type pokémon.
-Mudkip, water-type pokemon.

With your pokémon-friend at your side, you will be traveling through Hoenn, earning badges and catching all 386 pokemon!

However the graphics don't seem that much improved from the previous GBC titles, the world Hoenn itself is much and much bigger.

I played this game, and had even more fun than with Golden Sun!
(For those of you who can compare Golden Sun with another GBA-game!)

Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire is going to be a real hit, and pokemon-fans are going to love every minute of the game!
