'Bout time!

I've been waiting SO LONG for Pokemon Advance (as both games are collectively called), so long, in fact, then when I found out about the March 19 release date, my brain nearly exploded. I've enjoyed the previous games immensely, and though some may find these games childish, the gameplay is actually quite involved. Each Pokemon has it's own strengths and weaknesses that can be capitalized or exploited, and there are also items that can afect how your Pokemon performs in battle. With 100 new Pokemon to catch, including Kyogre and Groudon, the two Pokemon pictured on the boxes, you'll have more options when you start assembling your six-man (or woman, as Pokemon can be both) dream team to take on your friends. That's right! Once you've beaten every single person possible, you can use a Link Cable to battle your friends, and believe me, nothing builds strong bonds between friends like pitting teams of fuzzy little monsters against each other in a fight to the death. Good family fun!

Disappointing...

I am a long-time Pokemaniac. I got into pokemon five years ago as of next month, back in 1998 when it first came out, and it literally changed my life. I think it hit its peak gameplay-wise with the metallics (G/S/C), but eventually even they got old. I was hoping that the new games would inject life back into the series. Unfortunately, no.

I don't care what any of you say, there's just something deeply wrong with not being able to trade your old pokemon over to R/S. I cried and lost sleep over the idea of leaving my old team. We'd shared so many battles and memories together. But then I got over it, and figured I could just raise my team again on the new game. It wouldn't be the same, but it was close enough that I figured I would still enjoy the new games. Even without my faithful old team.

Well, guess what? You can't do that. They removed many of the old pokemon altogether, to make room for the new ones. So if you'll miss your old pokemon at all, don't buy this. You need not read further. You'll never get them back in any incarnation. Not to mention the new pokemon are, to put it mildly, ugly and uninspired. Seriously. Go look at an online pokedex, and you'll see what I mean. They just lack the charm of the first 250! I wanted to love them, but...there just wasn't anything there.

I bought the game anyway, played it for a few weeks, and put it down with a sigh. The old night/day/morning feature is gone. I tell you, there was nothing like playing my Silver version until 5 AM, and watching the little pixels brighten as I left the Pokemon Center. Now that's gone. The 2 on 2 battles may seem intriguing, but after a while, they become mere novelty. If you have a favorite pokemon from the first six games, chances are it's gone now. Remember meeting Lance in G/S/C, and going back to Kanto? Not so here! The R/S world is completely removed from the previous games. There is no connection. No familiar people, places, and rarely even any familiar pokemon!

Those of you who have never played the old six will probably enjoy this anyway, but let me say-- you'll get more bang for your buck if you buy one of the other games. They're cheap now, too. And for those of you who loved the old games and are wondering if Ruby/Sapphire is a worthy sequel-- it's not. Skip this. You'll play it for maybe two weeks and then get bored, because they took out all the cool old features, pokemon, places, people, and just about everything that made the first six great. What was replaced, instead of being removed outright (as is often the case here), is vastly inferior to the original stuff.

In short, no matter if you're new to pokemon or an old fan, you should buy one of the older games: Gold, Silver, or Crystal, or Red, Blue, or Yellow. They will give you many more hours of happiness and quality play.

Why, Nintendo? Why?

Love it

I'm 10 years old and I LOVE THIS GAME. I have ruby, and my sister has sapphire. We've already beaten the 8 gym leaders, and caught Kyogre and Groudon. If you have played the other pokemon versions,(like me and my sister) I suggest you get this one. Its the BEST one yet.
Then again, if you haven't, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. There are great pokemon images, like if you had the party page(in the other versions, they don't have exact replicas of your pokemon). Also, here's a great tip: When your picking berries, plant more berries where you picked them. Come back in a little while and see if they have sprouted.

Very interesting yet a tad disapointing

I've been a fan of pokemon since the show came out but only been playing since the yellow version. I'm really excited with Ruby since there are a lot more things to do to keep you busy. The pokemon actually have "personalities" with likes and dislikes and natures which effects their stats. The moves look cooler and I'm really glad of the status animations. Though of corse there is the down side where the pokemon lost the animation feature which would have made them even more lively. Though you still have to give them credit, there -are- 300 and something pokemon now, so of course that would have taken more time to do that the game would now have come out till 2004-05.
I love the beauty contest but extremely disapointed that I can't put my old and most loved, golden-tailed Ninetales (Fire-Storm)in the contest for her infinite beauty lol. Instead my Mightyena(Butch) takes up the tough contest (hee hee).I also got a kick out of the berry blender. It's a simple game but is a great rpg attribute since depending on how well you play, the better the Pokemon Block becomes.
I haven't tried the breeding feature yet that was introduced in G,S&C and I hear there is a grooming feature other then then the pokeBlocks. So I guess I have more playing to do.
The PokeNav was a great idea. Though, I don't know why, but it reminds me of .hack//infection...guess cause of the setup. The trainer eyes was interesting, along with the conditions. ^^ Atleast it showed who got what ribbons, just too bad you can't enlarge them.
The Storyline so far has captured my attention but I'm disapointed that there is no night or day feature along with the days of the week. I thought that was an awesome feature with certain events and pokemon. I'm also disappointed that you can't get to Kanto and Johto. That would have been cool to find out where in Johto the Character came from and see that everyone knew exactly who they were, meeting "old friends".
The 2 on 2 feature was what really turned me ono the game though. I've seen it on the show and was really hoping the Stadiums for N64 would have it because of the 4 play. I was so excited when I got to try it and how the experience points are distributed but again, I really want to try it with my old pokemon from Crystal, too bad...
Overrall it's a fantastic game and I give it a 4!

New Monsters New Lands New Fun

This game is like the defenition of fun. I started out with Mudik but I do reccomend starting out with Treecko. He can take out the first couple of gym leaders easy, plus his third form looks pretty cool. I never chose him but my rival uses it. My friend started out with Tortick. There's a lot more to do in this one. You can run and you can dive into water and catch Pokemon you can't catch on land. I caught Groudon but the bad thing is I used my Master Ball to do it. Here's some tips. Like I said before start out with Treecko,be sure to catch alot of Zigzagzoons because each one comes with a rare item, and be sure to catch Groudon because he's stronger than a level 60. Well I hoped this helped you a bit.

Nintendo: smart, or out of their mind?

When I first bought these games on poke'mon some 3 or so years ago I thought they were the best games ever made. I was even more suprised when there counterparts gold, silver, and crystal came out. Then I had figured out that you could trade back and fourth between all of them. Then when I was strolling through a store I saw an advertisement and the "Cool" pokemon the game possesd, I went nuts! I think it was a little foolish that nintendo did this for two reasons: Pokemon, aare pretty much over. And the new pokemon look somewhat "unattractive, or uncarismatic if you will". Then I thought of haveing a whole new world to explore in the game and thought it might be fun, and the "hip" thing to would be to purchase them. All over all this game will probobly be fun and challengeing in Its own way, but these new flashy games,(no Quotes)will never replace the origional pokemon games.(P.S. Why didn't nintendo release pokemon green in america?)

4.5 stars - Not the best Pokemon RPG but excellent still

Pokemon 3 (Ruby and Sapphire versions.) The third installment in the Game Boy Pokemon RPG series.

Nintendo's Pokemon franchise became a massive success in its native Japan relatively quickly. Although it took the franchise a little longer to catch on in America, it finally did catch on, and when it did, it took the nation by storm. Pokemon games and products sold like crazy, despite the fact that the franchise was virtually unrecognized in America at its time of release. By 2003, the phemonenon was pretty much dead in America, but still, Nintendo went ahead and released the two latest adventures in the series, Ruby and Sapphire. How do these games up? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-THIS GAME GIVES YOU MORE OF THE SAME MONSTER CATCHING AND BATTLING ACTION THAT YOU HAVE GROWN TO LOVE IN THE FIRST AND SECOND GAMES. To put it simply, if you liked the first game, it's quite unlikely that you won't like this one.
-THE GAME GRAPHICS ARE DRASTICALLY IMPROVED OVER THOSE OF THE PREDECESSOR TITLES. In this game, the graphics are not only improved, but the game is also optimized to make usage of the Game Boy Advance's thirty-two bit technology. It's nothing earth-shattering, but it's as good as a Game Boy Advance game like this can look!
-IT'S NOT JUST A REHASH OF EARLIER GAMES. Although the game uses the same general formulas, the game is entirely new, and the world is much larger this time around. Even after you beat the game, there is still a ton of stuff to do, like capture all of the creatures in the game and train new monsters. The game even introduces the concept of two-on-two battles!
-NINTENDO DESIGNED THIS GAME WITH PLAYER CONVENIENCE IN MIND. Remember how in the first games you had to go through all those menus just to use an item (like your bike or fishing pole?) Well, in this game, you can set the select button to use an item! This really comes in handy and speeds up the general flow of the game.
-TONS OF NEW CREATURES AND ABILITIES. Many of the old Pokemon are gone, but there are tons of new ones! And some of the new ones are pretty damn cool. Needless to say, there are new legendary ones as well.
-YOU CAN TRADE WITH POKEMON SAPPHIRE, AND THE UPCOMING FIRE RED AND LEAF GREEN GAMES. This is necessary to complete your Pokedex, since no one game has every creature.
-THE GAME REUSES THE CONCEPT OF BREEDING POKEMON. If you get a male and a female Pokemon together at the Daycare center, they just might lay an egg! This concept is necessary to get many of the "baby" Pokemon in the game.

CONS:
-YOU CAN'T TRADE WITH THE OLDER GAMES! This is a huge problem which is the major reason the game doesn't get a five-star rating in my book.
-MANY OF THE PROBLEMS THE OLD GAMES HAD WERE NOT FIXED FOR THIS GAME. Examples of this include not being able to rename Pokemon you get in trades, not being able to unlearn HM moves on your own, and the general pace of the game moving too slow.
-CONSIDERABLY MORE DIFFICULT THAN EARLIER GAMES. Chances are you're a gamer who is looking for a challenging portable RPG, but in many ways this game is TOO difficult. It seems that no matter how much you level up your monsters, it just doesn't seem to be enough in many places.
-THE MYSTERY EVENT/EON TICKET CONCEPT IS FLAWED. Why, you ask? YOU NEED AN E-READER FOR THEM! And, to say the least, the E-Reader is a rip-off! Why didn't Nintendo find another way to incorporate these elements into the game?
-WHY DOESN'T THIS GAME USE THE TIME OF DAY AND DAY OF THE WEEK SYSTEM THAT THE PREVIOUS GAMES USED? This was one of the best things about the previous games, and I am disappointed not to see it here.

OVERALL:
Pokemon 3 is a damn fine RPG, even if it doesn't quite top Pokemon 2. If you have a Game Boy Advance, this is an excellent game to add to your collection. A little word of advice - you can NOT get all of the Pokemon in one game, so if you get Ruby, you might want to make sure a friend owns or will buy Sapphire, or vice versa. Also, these games are going to be compatible with the forthcoming Fire Red and Leaf Green, so you might want to start building up monsters in this game now so that you can import them into that game when it comes out! Either way you look at it, Pokemon 3 is a damn good portable RPG.
