Diving in a World of Dreams

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 5
Date: January 28, 2008

Endless Ocean is possibly one of the most innovative games of the year, and it comes to us from Arika, who has given us forays into tropical waters before.

To start off you are given a boat and a crewmate named Katherine. She's a hydrophobe studying the ocean with your help and diving expertise. You can just straight dive, give underwater tours, or unleash your camera on some wildlife. During dives you also can interact with creatures, gaining yourself dolphins to train and specie data in your notebook. There is also no life bar and no danger of death, this serves to make the game both relaxing and educational.

Traditional gamers will struggle with the lack of listed goals, but this is a game more about exploration and education than accomplishments. There is no offensive language or content of any kind, only a handfull of specie may be frightening to young players and even then I'm talking VERY young. The controls work very well and little movement is really involved. All this wrapped in a [...]$ game with Wifi connectivity that lets you train dolphins with a friend or cooperate on dives.
I'd recommend for parents, gradparents, children, teachers and all lovers of the ocean.
The negatives are that it could have more species and areas but hopefully we'll get a sequel somewhere down the line. All in all a five-starred game!

Endless Boredom

I don't even know where to start with this 'game'. It's not even a real game, there's no point to it, you just swim around and interact with sea creatures. You can't die or get hurt, you don't level up, you don't even run out of air. Find sealife pet it, poke it, feed it, get bored. Here's a Great White Shark, hmmmm, let me pet it. Hey, a Stingray, I'll pet him too, it worked out well for Steve Irwin. Ok, that was bad, I miss Steve a lot. I'm sure he'd hate this game too though.

Mini Heart Attacks....not therapeutic

I'm 11 years old and this game is too creepy for me. I was hoping for a peaceful, relaxing game but I got nothing of the sort. It started off as 5 stars for me because it was very calm and nice. It quickly dropped to 4 stars because I had to explore an abyss. This wouldn't have been so bad, but as soon as I got down there, it started playing scary music. My mom's friend (Banana Pup...see reviews) was kind enough to explore it for me while I hid my eyes, listening to a play-by-play description of what was going on. Then I had to find a whale shark and came across some ruins and some creepy music. Immediately I got scared, my mom's friend took over, and my rating dropped to a 3. We found some artifacts on the ocean floor and when we came back up to the boat, instead of talking to Katherine, there was another cut away scene, looking down at me, like a bird's eye view, saying something like "you must atone to the sleeper." I had no clue what was going on, and revised my rating to a 2. Then I got an anonymous email titled "HE IS COMING"! Then it said something like "darkness and terror eat you up and turn your hair white"! That was enough for me to say I'm never going to play this game ever again. Then it was left as a one star game. I wasn't expecting any of this to happen. Every single review that I read NEVER said anything like that! If you don't like creepy games.....STAY AWAY!

Mindless and numbing

I bought this because I am a diver, and the other reviews were favorable. OK, the graphics aren't too bad, but there really is no purpose. There are no challenges relating to diving or the wildlife. The whole purpose, more or less, is to pet fish. That's right, pet fish. After a couple of hours I was ready to open a vein. So I had my 16 YO daughter try it. Maybe I was expecting too much, being a diver. It took her less time than me to lose interest. I would have rated 1 star, but it does make a nice coaster.

Adult Point of View

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3

Unlike some and seems most reviews this review is from a playing point of view of an adult. I've wanted this game since i saw it released over seas (called Forever Blue over there). I love the ocean and sea creatures, except sharks but the great part about this game is you can't die. I like this game for it's pure enjoyment, no other reason than that. Though it would be a great learning tool.

Plot:
Though you can not lose, die, or make mistakes in this game there is a goal. The goal of the game is to find a certain creature in the ocean, which you're boat mate tells you about as you progress in the game. The plot also thickens as you venture further and further out into the ocean. I don't want to give it away but it does have to do with your boat mate and she kind of gives you the story as to why she is out in the ocean and her background and asks for your help to find the creature.

Controls:
They are easy as pie. Press B and point and it gets you everywhere you want to go. You can take pictures with your camera, save them in an album, draw underwater with your underwater pen, feed the animals, pet the animals, train dolphins, and swim hands free all with ease.

Pros:
-Learn about sea life and creatures
-It's like a hunt for treasure sometimes
-How interactive it is
-You can have online play with other friends who own the game
-There is no loseing, dieing or time limit
-You can stop at any point and save
-You can put in your own SD card and listen to your own music while you swim
-Being a diving instructor
-Being the camera "guy" for a magazine
-You get to fill the aquarium with fish of your choice
-The video is awesome when you find some new underwater hole

Cons:
There is only one thing that i would have liked to see more of and that is special requests. Diving requests, you take people around the ocean and try and find a certain fish/creature they wanted to see. Or picture reuquests, you get small and big fish requests for a magazine.

Overall i think it's a great game. Sometimes i can sit there for so long i lose track of time. I think it's great for any age range, though it isn't packed full of action it does have it's perks.

Other games i enjoy if you want to see if you relate to my likes and dislikes:
-The Sims
-Mario Kart
-CSI
-Metroid
-Resident Evil
-Guitar Hero
-And of course Endless Ocean

Quite the Experience

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3

Who would I recommend this game for?
Marine biology nerds, moms, dads, younger kids, and anyone who wants to go scuba diving or explore in a submarine but for whatever reason can't.

Who is this game not for?
Hard core gamers, people who want something more of a thrill than discovering a rare species of marine animal such as the giant squid or coelacanth.

What flaws did I find or desires were left behind with this game?
- The boat and characters on while not swimming need help.
- Not quite enough straight interactivity with underwater animals, ie. I would have preferred seeing the diver stroke/touch the animals rather than seeing a cartoon hand.
- The guide dives can be kind of annoying, being that you usually are looking for a certain fish and they remind you to find it until/if you can. The guest is also rather corny in speech.
- No voice acting.

What did I find was the best about this game?
- Has more to it, areas to explore and things to see, than I expected.
- Animal and diver animations/movement underwater were top notch.
- Graphics underwater topped any Wii game I've played before.
- Has structure but totally free play at the same time.
- No death, blood, gore, mutation, destruction, explosions... and it's still a good game.
- The price made it VERY appealing. [...]

Why the 4 stars instead of 5?
Because, as stated in my point by point review, this game does indeed have a few elements that could've been vastly improved that would have made it a $50 title easy. They could've gone that extra mile, but they didn't. And thusly, 4 out of 5 stars seems appropriate though I wish I could give it 4 and a half. But 5 stars for the fun!

Fun for everyone

My husband told me about this game where all you do is swim around and look at fish. My response was "eh". Then he said it has dolphins. So I agreed to check it out--I love dolphins. I usually get bored with games after about 30 minutes.

The first time I played the game, I looked up and 4 hours had passed. And it really is a stress reliever. The music is very relaxing. My kids who are too young to play (only because they can't get the hang of the controls yet) like to watch it. I let them pick what fish we feed and touch and they learn the names. Of course, we have found most of the characters from Finding Nemo so that helps too (Wook mommy, Memo!!)

Overall, I'd say the game is a fun alternative to the blood and guts crowd and the shoot-em-ups and even the Mario world. There are missions of a sort, but you can choose to play them or not. I do agree with one reviewer who comment about the stiffness of the deck scenes. But who cares? The really fun stuff is under water!! And you get to ride a whale :)

Not my cup of Tea

I could basically cut and paste the previous 2 star reviews and it would sum up how I felt about this game. You get little mini missions where you have to take pictures or take people diving with you but there's no pop there's... no point. Its sort of educational I guess, I wasn't really paying attention to the information that is given about the fish too much as I was looking for the fun to begin. I probably played it a total of 2 hours exploring the sea, poking, petting and feeding fish. I was hoping something, anything would happen to make it slightly challenging or keep me interested. That did not happen.

This would not be a game I would purchase...I'm very glad I rented it so I can return it. :)

Takes boredom to a new level!

I read the reviews here on Amazon and thought that this would be a great game. I bought it, got home and played it.
What a letdown, this game is boring and tedious. My kids won't even play it, there is no action, no danger, no nothing. They don't even let you have a harpoon gun! If you like to pet fish, then this game is for you.
Petting fish is not exactly what I was looking for in a game.

A disappointment

It was a big flop as nothing resembled reality. Characters were wooden, fish unrealistic. A waste of money.
