World series baseball 2k1 had disapointing fielding control, but fantastic graphics!!! In my mind graphics are the biggest thing in a video game. World Series baseball 2k2 has ok game and fielding control, but horrible graphics, and terrible camera angles, the only plus is the instant replay! The batting stances are totally off and everyone's legs are huge and most of the players have very scrawny arms. VERY UNREALISTIC! Another thing about world series baseball 2k2 is you can't do all the recent trades that just happened: (Jermaine Dye), (Pedro Astacio), (Fred Mcgriff), to name a few, unless you do a franchise or season mode. But the catch is you could only do the trades with one team at a time, and if you were to do the rest of the trades with the other players to their new teams you would have to overwrite the season/franchise mode even if you save it a billion times it would still ask you if you wanted to overwrite it. Say.... that you're 161 games into a season and then you decide you want to play an exhibition game with a friend or perhaps a home run derby tournament you would have to overwrite the season with the exhibition game or home run derby no matter ow many times you save the season. That's a major disadvantage! I suggest if you like things realistic in a sports game, you should not buy this product! World Series Baseball 2k1 is better. Thanks for reading my review!

Not a good way to send off Dreamcast owners

General/Summary: Visual Concepts would have been better off holding this game over till next year, calling it WSB 2k3, and giving us Dreamcasr owners a quality, bug-free game as a thank-you. VC had a chance to make a statement and unfortunately that statement was "This is all you get so like it!" Well, I don't. VC could have gone out in style. If you think you want this game please rent it first and play it a long time. In fairness, this game is probably fun against a friend but against the computer it is an exercise in futility because of the "rubber banding" otherwise known as catch-up AI. I liked this game initially but I simply can't have fun anymore. Take out the catch-up AI and it would be fun, although you would likely win most games by double digits easily.

Gameplay: As mentioned in the summary this game has blatant catch-up AI known as "rubber banding" in the video game industry. This is not an uncommon practice and doesn't happen just in sports games. Essentially whenever you take a lead that is deemed too much the computer will catch-up no matter how well you have done up to that point. Play this game long enough and you will see it. Enough on that. As far as gameplay goes we now have manual fielding but just like last year you don't have the option to have auto fielding, which is the reverse of last year. I do like using the four buttons for throwing to bases. Fielding is quite difficult because balls are often hit so hard (much harder than real baseball in my opinion) and its hard to react fast enough. This is especially frustrating when the catch-up AI is in force. Hitting is very easy to pick-up, a little too easy. Homers are common place, even from pitchers. I like the pitching interface a great deal. Unlike last years game you know what the pitches are and its rare that you get the wrong one by accident. Baserunning is 100% better than last year. The management/franchise options are cool but trading is near impossible unless you control all the teams. Stat tracking is pretty poor and don't reflect real baseball. Too many players hitting homers, stealing bases, hitting near or above .400.

Graphics: A major downgrade from last year. Last years game was beautiful and the players looked like themselves. This years game has some bright spots graphically but players really don't resemble the real players very closely at all. Stadiums look OK but not outstanding. Player animations are few but look pretty decent.

Sound: The ambient sounds are quite good. Vendors in the stands sound cool and the crowd reacts properly to on-field action. I like the PA announcement of players names. The play-by-play is average at best and often doesn't call the correct action. The announcer sounds drugged and not excited.

DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY![....]

This game is garbage compared to 2k1. I don't know what they were thinking. My biggest problem is the excessive control they give the controller. I've probably played 20 games so far and almost every game, when I had to try to field something hit in the infield and missed it, the ball would roll into the outfield. Then the controller would automatically set to he outfielder who would start going in the direction I had the infielder going. And by the time I would get to the ball, the player would have stretched (maybe) a single to a double or triple. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

Would choose no stars if there was a choice.

This game is TERRIBLE. Let's go down the list. When the ball is hit into the outfield the outfielder never makes a running catch with his glove, but with...hmmmm...nothing. The ball is just caught, but by what? Who knows. Offense is WAY to easy in the game, example, 2 homers with Rey Ordonez in one game, but pitching...my goodness. If you pitcher gives up one run, take him out! Or else, he'll never find his groove back and he'll give up a million more runs. There's nothing you can do about it because the cpu will basically keep on driving in runs through the infield. There are so many glitches in the commentary, it's no even funny. Wrong calls all over the place. And what's with there being an error or two in almost every game! It's like there always has to be an error in a game. Now let's talk about the camera angle after a ball is hit. It's terrible, it does not zoom in. The ball is hit into the outfield and you have to pretty much hope that you are in that little red circle to make the catch and what happened to all of the nice defensive plays from WSB2K1? Those were great, all you do in this game is pick up and throw. Really ugly. I actually broke my disc in half and threw it away just five minutes ago and I'm happier than ever. Everyone who has this game should do the same and don't make the mistake of buying this piece of junk.

Awesome game, few mistakes.

I bought this game becuase I love baseball and have been wating since I bought my DC for a b-ball game that was worth buying. Anyway, it is awesome. The grpahics might not be as good as WSB 2k1 but are better than any other baseball game out there. Hitting isn't easy, which is a good thing, making the game more real to life. One little thing I was very impressed with was the fact that the pitchers won't pitch some pitches. The create a player rocks, always a must in a game! And the game isnt so easy it is boring once you get the hang of it. There are some minor glitches. First off the franchise mode; my favorite way to play games. You can not re-sign free agents, in fact you dont sign anyone. After each season there is a "free agent draft" much like a rookie draft. This I do not like, if I am going to do franchise mode, I want to try and trade and sign guys to stay under the set amount of money etc. Also the commentary is pretty pathetic. Unlike all the other sega sports games. Besides that it is good and I say you buy it.

A lot better gameplay than 2K1....

I just bought this on Saturday and I gotta tell you, Sega, if you are reading, perk up! I got some nice things to say about your little (big) gem you got here! ----------------------------------------

Pitching--- This game is definitly 150% better gameplay than 2K1. The pitching stances are so realistic. Freddy Garcia (Seattle Mariners) has that little stretch-pause-delivery. Pedro is pretty much the same as the earlier game. The pitching is really not that hard to understand if you read the instructions first. On Rookie mode the pitches take about 2.5 sec. to get to the catcher and you can see where they are going to place it, too. Pro mode is a lot better for people who want a challenge. Very good pitching change from 2K1, though...

Batting--- The batting I would probably 3 stars. The stances are not THAT realsitic. In this game, Edgar Martinez (Seattle Mariners) looks like he's waving down a roaming hot dog vendor in center field with his bat! Trying to hit the ball, however, is challenging but fun. unlike 2K1 it is about 35% chance that a homerun will be hit in a game! In 2K1 there was about a 35% chance you would hit a dinger in every at-bat...

Fielding--- Terrific, TeRriFiC, TERRIFIC!!! I'd give this as many stars as ol' betsy could hold. The fielding really makes you feel that you are in the game. you can dive for lined shots up the middle, leap for and rob Ken Griffey of a HR (wide contrast, huh?) Anything you can think of. Even errors have their part in the game. To tell the truth, this was what I waned the most. Errors! A baseball game is not a game if there not AT LEAST some errors during the season. In 2K1 the fielders (not controlled by me of course) would catch every ball, and when you look close on the poor replays, they were sometimes 2 feet away from the glove. Still caught though. What I would have liked is that the fielders don't run the fast. Even Ichiro! (I have to admit, though, he does run faster than everybody on the field. He ran so fast that he stole 2nd and 3rd without even drawing a throw from the catcher!

Modes--- The modes are great. I don't care what that other person thinks. Using the Analog Pad to go through the modes is fine with me. (Do you know how to use it?) The minor leagues are so awesome. I called up for the Seattle Mariners that I had no idea existed. Japanese players! COOL!!! The trading is very complex which makes it a lot better than 2K1! I tried season mode and it is so cool. You can decide before you start a season what difficulty level, whether you want a flexible or tight schedule, etc. Things like that are what think are cool. If you just want to play postseason that gets a little too complicated! You have to set up everything. Including playoff tree, how many teams, what are the rules, etc. The managment is very cool, too. It has minor leagues in it, batting/pitching log, etc. The HR derby is hard to get to play. I still haven't figured out how to play it. But the doesn't mean it stinks! Franchise is very good, too. So is the Customizable mode.

Doxology--- To nail things down this has a few things that could have been better...mediocre faces, less complex HR Derby and Postseason. But this is definitly worth 4 and 19/20s stars. Excellent quality, terrific gameplay, and when you play you can just taste them weiners and popcorn and crackerjacks!

Get this now while it lasts!!

Now...PLAY BALL!

Tough choice between 2k1 and 2k2

I, like everyone else, was ecited about the graphics in 2k1. And like everyone else, I thought the game itself was lacking due to the fact that you didn't really play the field. In 2k2 you definitely play the field (which I like), but everything else is much worse than 2k1. The graphics are not even 1/2 as good as 2k1, it looks like Triple Play 2000 for Playstation. The Franchise Mode is no fun because you don't get to negotiate at all (like in Madden), you sign a player for the number of years they request and then at the end of the season there is a draft of all the players whose contract ran out. The game is fun, but the looks don't compare to 2k1.

Some good... some bad... some ugly...

Let me start by saying that I'm one of very few people who didn't think 2k1 was that horrible. The players looked good, batting was not so difficult once you got the hang of it (in fact it was too easy - my team had an over .500 avg!), and it was easy to learn. It did have plenty of drawbacks too... but that's been covered. So, on to the good, bad and ugly:

Good:
The inclusion of more game modes, especially the Home Run Derby.

The different zones for the hitters.

The more realistic movement charateristics of the pitches (although the speed is off which I'll cover below).

Control of fielders.

Bad:

It looks more "cartoonish" than the last title especially with the players finsihing off movements by going to this magneto football game wait position.

The time for the pitches to reach the batter was slowed down and is no longer realistic.

Batting with a button and not the variable power selection available in the trigger is a drawback in my eyes.

Player creation no longer allows you to choose batting stances or pitching styles.

Ugly:

A bug with certain memory cards that screws up season mode and doesn't allow you to pick up where you left off.

The most dull announcer I have ever heard. When will other sports games ever get announcers like the ones in EA's NHL series? They rule! =]

Replacing one player on each roster with a game developer? Ridiculous!

Overall:

I'd like to see a hybrid of both games. With no decent baseball game on the PS2, this was a let down for me. So I still wait for a good baseball sim...

Can be fun but not realistic at all.

...This game doesn't simulate real baseball very well.

1) It's nearly impossible to draw a walk.
2) It's tough to strike out the computer no matter WHO you use and no matter who the batter is.
3) The computer NEVER swings at pitches out of the zone.
4) It's almost impossible to strike the cpu out swinging no matter who you use.
5) Throwing fastballs gets you killed. Randy Johnson's fastballs get hit out by SS's in the game. Billy Wagner too. Randy Johnson is so ineffective in the game you'd think he was a AAA callup instead of maybe the Best LH power pitcher in history. LH'ers in this game can even hit hr's off him, it's a joke.
6) The computer doesn't K on splitters they either are taken for strikes or they get hit. Splitters in real baseball are not strikes. They break sharply into the dirt and even great hitters swing at good splitters in the dirt and whiff.
7) Fielding grounders is hard and the ball often goes by you all the way to the wall for a triple. Diving/leaping is all but useless.
8) Your fielders throw casually and never get a runner at the plate.
9) No matter who your catcher is, if the computer attempts to steal you will throw them out.
10) The announcer misses the action half the time.
11) You can smash a double off the CF fence but then get thrown out at 2B.

The Best Baseball Game Out There

This has got to be the best baseball game on the market. The learning curve is not to steep and you will be hitting the ball with ease in no time.Base running, throwing and fielding are all excellent.
I just got through playing a complete season which took about 3 months playing it pretty regulary and made it to The World Series and won....the cpu is smart and depending on what skill level you have the game set on the cpu is a tough opponent.

Pitching in this game RULES!Curveballs,Sinkers,sliders,fastballs,Change-ups,forkballs and splitters. They're all here!

The players are so realistic it's like you are controlling real life players. Each player has their own unique body type, batting stance and swing.

Mark Mcguire looks and acts JUST like Mark Mcguire. All of the players are true to life.

If you own a Dreamcast or are thinking of buying one this game is a must in your Sports Collection.
