ok-

for a person who only plays sports video games, this game and virtua tennis were the two most exciting buys for me this summer. However, based on my feeling that certain characteristics of sports games shouldn't change, WSB2K1 isn't that great. What is so fantastic about Virtua Tennis is that it holds true to its predecessors, most notable Super Tennis for SNES. You have to control everything in Virtua Tennis. In World Series Baseball, the most disgusting feature invented in a baseball video game is unchangable, the dreaded auto fielding. How on earth could Sega produce a game that takes all the fun out of baseball, fielding? I mean, you still get to throw the ball, but it's making those diving grabs that are the fun part, at least for me. Not to mention that control on your pitches is impossible, and not being able to use the D-pad to throw to a certain base gets annoying b/c if you rub the analog thumb pad the wrong way you throw to the wrong base. I'm more content playing any of the Ken Griffey Jr. baseball games for the Nintendo systems, whether it's the original for SNES or Slugfest for N64, those games both stay true to the original format of baseball games.

U have got to be kidding me! Wheres the defensive control?

I was one of the many people who bought into the hype of world series baseball 2k1. I have one question . Do the people that wrote these reviews of the game work for sega? I mean c'mon , This game plays out kinda like a PC game . Its Gameplay is choppy , players dont move smoothly AT ALL! This game kind of reminds me of going to a book store and buying a book because the cover looked great. For thoses of you who like arcade style games and are not interested in total control, this is the game for you. You may be wondering why im so dissapointed . Well for one thing when i buy a sports game I am looking for Smart AI , Smooth gameplay , And most important TOTAL CONTROL! I have to wonder who approved the automatic fielding. Baseball games on lesser quality consoles such as Playstation , N64 , etc. , give you total control in the field , why then did sega decide to ignore that? I played two games and couldnt get into the flow so i returned it . I am a huge fan of the Sega 2k line , but this game plays out like it was rushed before completion to 2k standards. SEGA next time you put out a baseball game remember these two very impotant words TOTAL CONTROL! PS : ESPN BASEBALL TONIGHT can not be any worse.

This game was not worth the wait. It earned 1 star due to good graphics. Game play is horrible, no control of the players playing the field, no homerun derby, no franchise, no batting practice, game play is very sluggish, poor stats and to top it off instant replay cuts off very quick. This game was not designed in the states and it shows. When batter is at the plate it is very difficult to aim where you would like to hit the ball, when the pitcher throws the ball it is very difficult to determine if the ball is a fast or a curve. I have been playing video game for 18 yrs and this is so far one of the worst I have ever played Triple play 2001 is way better aside of graphics.

It takes time.....

This could have been one of the best games ever, but it needs more. At first the game is IMPOSSIBLE. You will get very frustraited in the begining. The first bad thing, the fielding. The problem is that the comp does it. This may not seem to bad for some people, but the fielders are so stupid they make a lot of aviodable errors. The first and third basemen will NOT go for a pop fly even if it's next to them. The controls are a little odd in my oppinion but they will become second nature in time. The real problem though is depth. There are no fun extras like Home Run Derby or Bating Practice. It's kind of dissapointing that the first and second players cannot be on the ame team in exhibition mode. Now for the good points. The grapics are BEAUTIFUL, but sometimes they slow the game. The roster options are great. Everthing down to the All-Star roster is customiseable. Give this game a week or two. It will be confusing at first, but it is well worth it. I can't wait untill 2k2 is out.

high hopes

how can this game be good if you can not even control your fielders. So what i am trying to get to you is what kind of a baseball fan likes a game where the computer controls your fielders and not you. There are also other glitches in the game like sometimes in the infield your infielder runs in place before catching the groundball whitch results to the computer being safe on first. There is one good thing world series baseball 2K1 has good updated rosters for the 2000 season not the 2001 season. Also pitching to the batters can be fun but with all the glitches and not being able to control all your fielders drags the game down to a two.I really had high hopes for 2K1 to bad the game is not good.

Pretty Enjoyable

World series Baseball 2K1 is a half-way decent game. It has its ups and downs. For hardcore baseball fans like me, it is a very enjoyable game. This game has superb graphics, many players look fairly close to what they look like in real life. The computer (with artificial intelligence) provides some competition for beginning players, but as you get more experienced, you may find yourself beating the other team 25 to 2. It is cool to see your players have amazing stats, though. You, however, have no control over fielding whatsoever. Some plays are made correctly while others become jawdroppers. You can player multiplayer in the exhibition mode, but not the season mode. This game definitely needs improvement, but it can satisfy some players.

It's terrible

I'm the biggest baseball fan you'll ever meet, this game is pathetic. To bat, you have to hold a trigger while moving ur finger @ a 45 degree angle. Pitching is impossible. It is the worst

Do not buy it really stinks

This game is a waste of time and money. It is nothing like real gameplay on other systems. After you pitch a ball for say a ball, it goes right to the next pitch immediately. You dont pick your pitches! What kind of psycho thought this game up? I had a bad taste in my mouth after this one. BOO SEGA.

This is the most disappointing game ever.

I have never been more shocked by the breathtaking lack of care taken in the release of a game as I was with World Series Baseball 2K1. This was unquestionably Sega's most durable and highly praised sports franchise, getting its overdue Dreamcast facelift. And that's just about all it got. The graphics in this game are incredible, and for that it is great...they are the best I have seen in a video game to date. They are complemented by sound that is roughly the quality of that found in Sports Talk Baseball, the old Sega Genesis release. In other words, the sound is awful. The commentary is broken and incomprehensible, and is utterly inexcusable given what the Dreamcast is capable of and the quality of the sound in the Sega Sports 2K releases.

However, the most agregious and horrifying aspect of this game is the control, or lack thereof. The pitching control is pretty good, that I will admit...but you'd better get used to pitching, because you'll be doing a lot of it. Batting is absolutely impossible. To bat you release the R trigger, and watch as your player either swings immediately or a second later...there appears to be no rhyme or reason to when the player will actually swing. This makes precise timing absolutely impossible. The game instructs you if you were too early or too late on your swing, as if correcting it were a possibility. After playing my first and probably only 5 games, I had yet to score a run. I've saved the worst for last, however. The fielding control...well...there is none! You cannot manually field, which isn't a problem for some, like me, because I usually let the computer field in baseball games. It is a problem, however, when the computer can't field worth a lick. I saw Andruw Jones stand still as a fly ball flew within 2 feet of his head, waiting for the left fielder play a ball hit to dead center. Players will run in place, not dive for reachable balls, and make horrible mis-plays. The laws of physics don't apply, either...a computer outfielder ran through the crooked part of the wall at Fenway to put me out. Throwing is manual and tricky...to get your player to throw with any sense of urgency, you have to press the button exactly when the game decides he has control, and the only way this is consistently accomplished is by pounding the button until the throw is made. Still, players will lazily throw the ball and slowly take it out of their glove at crucial times. Baserunning also gets a big fat "F", as it is only manual, and your player will run on contact, no matter what. You have to tell them to go back, and the game regularly does not obey such commands.

As for gameplay modes, there is no home run derby, as was previously promised. In fact, aside from exhibition and season play, there isn't much to do. The game, in fact, promises a game play mode on the back of the jewel case that doesn't even exist.

I don't really know how to articulate my rage and disappointment at Sega for releasing this game, especially when I know that it was delayed NUMEROUS times to make it *more* playable. As it stands, this is a truly awful game and is not worthy of anyone's money. I read a mediocre review of this game and bought it from Amazon (who, as far as I know, does not allow returns based on the quality of the product), and I wish I had at least bought it locally so I could take it back. This is probably the worst [money] I purposefully ever spent, and I urge you to make the same mistake. Any postive review you read of this game must either be from someone who has never attempted to actually play it or someone who is on the take from Sega. Take that money and buy Virtua Tennis or any of the other Sega Sports "2K" releases, as they are all excellent games by any standard.
