The graphics are certainly worth 1 star

I should start by saying that I was eagerly awaiting the release of this game, or any baseball game on the Dreamcast system. I really hoped that the Sega sports team would do as good a job with this title as they had with NFL 2K and NBA 2K-- I've tried to give their developers the benefit of the doubt and forget about NHL 2K. So, when I got a chance to pick this game up a few days before the release, I was hyped.

I must say that the graphics are really outstanding--the players and stadiums are very true to life. There's also some good looking cut scenes done with the players after big plays; when runs are scored, home runs launched, etc. However, that's about where it ends.

There are so many things that are poorly done in this game that I don't believe I'll have enough room to go into everything. But, if there's a chance I can save you from dropping the $50+ dollars on what could very well be a beta version of a game, then I feel it's my duty to bring to light just a few of the numerous aspects of this game that are awful.

On Defense:

The pitching is... OK. The way the available pitches are displayed and are chosen works well. But, when delivering a pitch there's a power/accuracy meter that you try to click on at it's peak- very similar to a power meter used for kicking in many football games- that gets old.

Also, there's no bullpen. If you want a new pitcher, you just put him in the game. There's no warming up the righty to face the big hitter, or getting your closer up and throwing to grab the save. As a result, an element of realism is definitely lost.

The fielding is...TERRIBLE. You can't even toggle between the fielders. When the ball is hit, the AI tracks down the ball with your players. Only when they get to the ball can you take control of the fielder. Once you do take control of the fielder, you have the option to either throw the ball, or hit a button and push towards which base you'd like to run to. (this is the first time I've ever seen this in a game, now I know why) No kidding, you can't just run in any direction you'd like, you can only run towards a base.

On Offense:

The batting is...HORRIBLE. You squeeze the right trigger prior to the pitch. Then, you release the trigger when you want to swing the bat. The bunting looks cool enough, but there's no way to angle the bat and project the ball down or up, towards the first base line or towards the third base line. I mean, you can't even check swing-- need I go on?

Overall gameplay:

One person does the commentary, and there's no color commentary at all. The announcer just says things like "fastball" and "slider." He says the player's name when they bat and states the score between innings.

The controller's can't be assigned during gameplay. If you want to let the other player in, you'll need to quit the game.

And the kicker...You can't even play 2 players in season mode-- unbelievable!

If you're really stoked about this game, like I was, there's probably nothing that is going to stop you from buying it. I just wish that I would have been exposed to some real, honest reviews of this game. Not what the Sega marketing department puts out. Truly, the catch phrase "If they can do it on the diamond, they can do it in this game" is a flat out lie. I really don't know if the previous positive reviews were submitted by people who played the game, or saw footage of it, because it definitely looks cool, no doubts there. But, I ask you, what is real player modeling and motion capture technology worth if the gameplay is weak?

Bottom line-- if you're the type of gamer that enjoys baseball games like EA's Triple Play titles for PSX, or the All Star Baseball titles for N64, you'll probably be disappointed with World Series Baseball 2K1.

WSB2K1 is pure acrade,a place where bsbll games dont belong

WSB2K1 is nothing but a pretty face, dont be foold by the other reviews...i love my dreamcast, but this game has nothing to offer but graphics. The fielding is automatic, which takes away 1/3 of the game...and it "slows down" whenever you steal a base. Also, it seems like all hits are in the outfield or home runs. This game should be played by the easily amused 16 and unders who want nothing more than to swing the bat.

This is a huge step back!

WSB2K1 is a joke. The whole game feels like a homerun contest becasue you CANT FEILD! The computer actually does it for you. You have very limited control of the pitcher and when your hitting you have to hit the R trigger twice just to swing. The game feels like you are watching a preview of a beautiful game while pushing buttons pretending to play. I have wasted my time and money with this game.

IT'S NOT ALL THAT!

I just purchased this game and have been playing it for a day.....and I DON'T find this game to be as good as it SHOULD be. Most baseball games usually comes out when the season starts, so this game has been pushed back already...and the result is NOT as great as it should be. I must say the graphics are spectacular...but there's not all that I'm looking for. There could be some improvements, for example: a dynasty mode(like the ones from any EA sports games) would be nice. The GM mode is terrible! I can't trade multiple players in one transactions, I can't release a player, and there's no valuation on the trade...basically there's not much but a one for one deal, and that's not even

The best game for dreamcast!

This is the best game there ever was. The graphics are real and just looking at the pictures that america online has provided us looks like a real live baseball game in more ways than one. I guranteed you that no game will ever beat this game unless someone smart enough can go the distance with tecnology.

When I first saw pictures from World Series Baseball 2K1, I couldn't believe my eyes. The graphics were great, it seemed so real. I had to give this game a try. The game was great, it had great game play, great graphics, and amazing detail. Sega has done it again, by creating another sports game masterpiece. There is no question, WSM 2K1 is one of the best baseball games ever made. This game should be at the top of everyones must buy list!
