I bought this game after reading all the wonderful reviews it gets. Now I know I won't be very popular in saying this, but this game [is not very good]! It's true. I played it for a few hours the first day I got it and haven't played it since, I wish I rented it first. All you do is walk around and talk to people following a confusing story line. It made me get bored with the quickness. Where's the nearest pawn shop, cuz I gotta dump this [game]!
Stay away from this abysmal game.

Shenmue is like an RPG with no battle system. I do not know what Yu Suzuki is thinking when producing this game because it's so darn boring. Sega's multimillion dollar disaster leaves the player sleeping through hours of asking people for clues about who killed the main character's father. To add some action to the game, Sega added a pathetic Budo fighting system that is similar to Virtua Fighter 3 but with an even worse animation. Please stay away from Shenmue, this game is the Weakest Link of RPGs.

I have to add my $.02 here. I rented Shenmue and played through the first disc and into the second before I had to return it. I can say that I will not buy this game. The main reasons being 0 replayability and absurdly easy game play. I found no challenge to the game so it got boring. Yes, the graphics are good and the game play is new and different, yadda yadda, but it's boring. Simple as that.
Just fantastic

Can't think of too much to write, except that this is one of the best games I've ever played (only complaint: they should have mip-mapped the textures)
Sucks you in and keeps you in.

With all the hype I expected better. I'm 68 years old, and this is by far the most boring game I have ever taken on. Not enough action stuff. Walking down a street knocking on doors is NOT action!! In addition, it is difficult to play a half hour a day. I can't remember where I was or where I was going, and I'm too old to be continually taking notes for all that stuff. I spent more time messing with the records than playing the game. Graphics not as good as Skies of Arcadia, wow, that is a viewers delight! I never have been into this judo stuff, and the game reviews never mentioned that. Hit this button, that button, another button, up, down, over, back, over, back, and something good'll happen, maybe? Give me a good ol' game where I can press a spell button and some beast drops down and does the butt kickin' for me!! I hung my jock up on this one!! One Shenmue game for sale! Gonna find something more interesting and entertaining. And next time I'll wait and read the CUSTOMERS reviews first. Some gamers here have told it like it is.

The high point in the game is quickly clear;the graphics. Thay are the best I've currently seen, better than the PS2 games. But of couse, there is more. A good story that devolops well, plenty of little sidegames too waste your time on, and quality battle systems. The only minor complaint is that the control in the main world can get a tad frustrating to some, but you can handle it. A very good, huge game.

I pre-ordered this game right when I first saw the ad in May and was expecting the best. Sure enough gaming genius Yu Suzuki came through with a masterpiece. Go anywhere, do anything, open any cabinet, go into any store, and watch time and people pass by on their own schedules. This game, built in the period of four years, has drawn the line for good games for a console. If you have a Dreamcast this is a must-have and a must-get! (and if you can, splurge for the fast shipping this time...)

This is the most original and is the best game ever. It is so realistic. All the people in the town have every day lives, and everyone is different. The graphics are the best for the dreamcast and the ps2 today. It is the best game I have ever played The acting can be a little bad, but this game is truly the best. You sould bye it I am possitive you will love it.

I read the reviews of this all over the internet. Everyone was all like 'woooooowwwwww, this game is -awesome-' so I found it used for $12 and went ahead and got it. At first, I thought it was pretty cool. I loved being able to meander around and talk to people, find out important information, etc. etc. But the longer I played, the less I liked it. Your character, Ryo, is looking to revenge his father's death. But to do so he starts getting involved in the seedy underbelly of whatever city it is he lives in. By the end he's beating the bejeesis out of people just for bumping into him, which is a terrible thing to see happen to someone who's supposed to be 18, even if they are just a game character. Toward the end it gets very cheesy. Nozomi is leaving for Canada, and Tom is leaving for America. *sniff* And Gui Zhang gets hurt! Geez, I was expecting them to then say that the kitten you rescued earlier had died and Ine-san came down with some horrible disease etc. etc. And you were left with no resolution. It seemed an awful lot of work to do to find out the bad guy had gone to Hong Kong. Overall, I did not feel that the effort was worth it.
