I bought a dreamcast just for this game and after 2 hours of play I took the system and the game back for a refund. Graphically this game is amazing, and the sound is also great... but after 2 hours of playing I find it the game is slow and gets boring very quick. Living in a virtual world is frustrating and slow most times. This game is for people who have tons of time, (not for me) I like games that I can jump in, have a blast, and get out. This game does not let me do that.. it's so slow that it makes final fantasy feels fast paced. For realz, I feel the only reason to play this game is to check out the amazing graphics and the 3D environments. But living in a virtual world is just sad imo. you gotta be a person with no life to do that...

This game is just simply amazing. It's THE reason to own a Dreamcast. This game is the one that Sony should have released for the PS2. The graphics are the best ever seen in a game so far. The story is totally cool. You play Ryo, who has to find his father's killer, and while doing that, you can do anything else you want. From playing arcade games and darts at the local bar to finding a job and working to make money. This game has it all and more. You best run out and buy it now before it's gone!

This is the sort of game that should have come out on the DC ages ago. Spectacular graphics, an interesting story and a great concept.

the game does have some problems still, but they are not big enough to diminish the enjoyment this game brings.

If you can avoid all the hype and just play the game on its merits and hopefully we will see more games of this calibure being released.

As soon as I started playing this game I soon realized that it was going to be a classic. I went through the game without any flaws and it kept me interested. I was immediatly pulled into the game's story and could almost feel the emotion in the game because of the highly detailed facial expressions. The graphics were by far the best that I have ever seen in a game in a long time. The graphics didn't astound me as much as the fact of being able to interact with almost every object in the game. There are a number of minigames that you can play if you go to the arcade, casino, or even the bars. Great battle system and the game runs in real time. The date changes from day-to-day and so does the weather. The game starts around Christmas time, so during that time the streets get decorated for the holidays including Christmas music playing on the streets. That was just a small list of the incredible things you can experience in this game. With SEGA owning the rights to this game they shouldn't have a problem with SONY. I can't wait until the next one comes out. For those of you that have a Dreamcast go out and get this game immediately (or get it from here) and for those of you that don't own a Dreamcast...GO AND GET ONE ALONG WITH THIS GAME!

this game is amazing. there is no way of describing the actual experience of playing this "game". There are a lot of people walking around who seem like filler characters who don't talk to you because they have thier own lives and are not concerned with yours, just like real life. and they aren't nameless faces every character is unique. If you use the passport to go online you can get info on EVERY character in the game, even animals, and the 70 man battle at the end of the game, every guy you beat up has an actual name and profile. and the story, [surpasses] any other game i've seen, EVER. a true-to-life quest for enlightnment. But there are some down sides to the game, shenmue 2 isn't out yet. Every game has room for improvement, and if you get caught up in what isn't in the "game", you'll miss what is. i played thru FF7, all 40+ hours, and never touched it again. shenmue takes about 20 and i'm on my 3rd time thru, still learning things about the story i didn't know before. just playing the game once thru doesn't do it justice, to truely grasp the greatness of this game, one must truely imerse oneself in the game. it's like buying a 100 room house and using only 5 rooms, never even entering the others, never knowing what's there, kind of a waste...

Ok, Do you remember the great classic games such as the Final Fantasy series, Sonic and Mario. This game is all those games put together with better gameplay, controls, and graphics. When I turned on my dreamcast and started a new game the intro video started and I was immediatley interested in the game. Once the video ended I expected to see a little bit worse graphics but guess what they stayed the same. This just made the game better. All of the different modes are great and I really like the fact that you can go anywhere and do anything. All and all this is definetly my favorite game ever and probaly will be yours too.

This game is incredible. This cannot be denied. It is slow at points, but the manner in which it is concieved makes you actually feel a part of the game. Things could have been done better. Maybe it could be sped up a little, maybe it could be a little less linear. Believe me, some people say that you dont have a life if you play this game because there are many aspects which dont engage you enough as a gamer. Yes video games are meant to play, and Shenmue is more of an exploration, story driven game. The combination of graphics, story, and sound ( the music is probably the best I have ever heard in any game, let alone most movies). You actually feel invested in the characters. If you go into the game sceptical then you might just find everyhting wrong with it. If you want to experience something new this game WILL change the way in which you view games. Shenmue is an experience that I will never forget. It might be the best game ever, not because it is so great to play, or because the graphics are so good, it is the vision of what the future of games is. Playing Shenmue conveys an experience that you cannot get from Final Fantasy type games or 1st person shooters. It is the most virtua reality type game ever made. But it is not truly virtual yet. The ending is a kick in the nuts and makes you want chapter 2 really badly. Go buy it, if you dont like it then return it. Believe me I dont think you will want to. Its unfortunate that this game was overhyped because even though it was, it delivers in ways that you will not expect it to.

This game is masterful. In my opinion it is the best Dreamcast Game available. It is extremely realistic. A lot of people say the voice-acting is horrible, but really, it isn't. This is why I give it a five out of a possible 5 stars. If they were six stars I'd give it six!

I loved this game!!!! I was so wrapped up in it that i ended beating it in 2 months (shenmue time) you were supposed to have finished disc one by around april, i beat it by the 5th or 6th of December, then disc two, finished that in a matter of (shenmue timed) days, disc 3 left you hanging though. I'm yearning for the second, which is due out this fall. The time system was excellent, fight sequences were extremely fun. My favorite part was the 70 man gang fight, i've never had so much fun! In real time, i beat this game in about 5 days, i was totally sucked into it. I have yet to find an equal match to this game, graphics-amazing, gamplay-good, story-awsome. overall one of the best games, ever.
