A BLAND SEQUEL TO A GREAT GAME

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 16 / 18

Innovation, like intelligence, cannot be bought; or forced; or spread on a slice of bread. It is a fleeing ability that needs time and space to grow and bear fruit. Nowadays, there are no such conditions in the gaming industry. Hence, games like CoH: OPPOSING FRONTS. The cookie-cutter at work.

Whether one likes or not strategic-points RTS games (what are now called "WarGames") is a matter of preference (I do not, they reduce the immersion factor, as they remind me too much that I am playing a computer game). This is not the main problem with CoH:OF. After all, the original CoH was also a strategic-points game and it was a GREAT game!

RELIC, a company with a long RTS history, attempted to improve on the original. Running a game-mill produced mixed results.

PROS:
- Improved graphics and sounds
- Enemy AI. They will come after your dug-in troops from every possible angle.
- Did I mention the graphics? Yes, they have improved...

CONS:
- Slower gameplay (from unit production to movement - it can really get on your nerves when under pressure)
- Smaller maps (although strategically more diverse)
- Single Player practically...abandoned to fare for itself. Not very thought out and pretty predictable.
- Your own units AI: they will keep getting mowed down if caught exposed when moving - although there will be tons of buildings around. Nearby units do not come helping: if an enemy unit is outside its own detection range, they will not lift a finger. Now, I do realize this is the part the...player is supposed to fill; however, friendly units assisting in enemy detection would be much more realistic (even for a WWII game). Either C&C-TIBERIUM WARS spoiled us too much or RELIC relies too heavily on the pause-to-issue-orders game style.

Overall: if you liked the original CoH, I am sure you will like this one too. If new to the genre, start with the original CoH though.

What a buggy POS this is....

I have never seen a more buggy game. Patch after patch after patch. On # 4 now and it won't launch. Finally had it working after extensive emails to customer suupport then, today, it decided it needed another 112MB patch. After downloading it, it supposedly patched but on relaunch still wants the patch. ARRRGGHHH! Who is writing this crappy code and who is checking it? I just want to come home from work and play a little game...instead its sheer frustration.
I understand their desire for copyright protection, but their requirements for you to jump through so many hoops is ridiculous. THQ you should be ashamed....

Crashtastic

COH was and is a great game. COH Opposing Fronts is not only unstable it will uninstall and prevent you from enjoying the COH experience you already had. I have uninstalled COH:OF and spent a lot of time reinstalling my original COH with patches just to get back to where I started from...

Very frustrating. Just skip this game and stick with the original COH.

Great multiplayer and single player

OK, here's my updated review, now that I've played the game a bit more.

The campaign mode is compelling -- personally I think it's about as interesting as the original. I didn't get sucked into it; the cut scenes seem a little shoddier, and the German accents were bizarre; and the objectives were a little less fresh this time around. Still good.

Multiplayer is amazing, with some flaws that a patch should iron out. Playing as the new British or Panzer armies is a COMPLETELY different experience from the original American or German armies. You don't get snipers or heavy machine guns anymore for either the Panzer Elite or the British. Here's how it breaks down:

Panzer elite: You've only got a choice of four buildings total, and they crank out some pretty cool units. You've got a mobile mortar vehicle that can shoot fire balls to destroy buildings and groups of infantry. You've got halftracks that can transport infantry across the map (a new feature). The command tree options (special abilities) of the faction, however, are the really cool part. You can disable strategic resources once you've captured them, which makes it EXTREMELY important for allied players to watch their ground. Otherwise, a panzer army can take allied points and then destroy them, so that they can never be reused by the enemy! The Germans also have some amazingly durable tanks and can construct heavy flak weaponry.
Cons: RANGERS are overpowered. This allied special unit simply devastates the panzer elite armor, at all levels, and desperately needs to be weakened in a patch. Also, look out for sticky bombs!

The British: yikes. Mobility is the key here. The British buildings are simply 3 trucks that you should place around the map on different strategic points. The upside is that you get more resources from points you place your buildings/trucks next to. The downside is that your trucks will be vulnerable since they will be so spread out.
The British can construct cool fortifications, like a trench that shields infantry extremely well, and a bunkered mortar that basically needs to be hit by either grenades, flamethrowers or a tank to be beaten. Officers are also really important so that you can build more buildings and improve troop effectiveness.
Cons: This is a hard side to play. Your fortifications are easy to destroy or even to use against you (the trench especially) and your AT capability is TERRIBLE. You do get some cool special abilities, though, like the ability to "intercept axis transmissions" by setting up a triangular radio network. Basically, your infantry can place transmitters at 3 points, and from then on you can see everything your opponent does within that area! It's tough to use, but effective if you pull it off -- much like the res of the British arsenal.

Conclusion -- fix Rangers. Make them weaker. Other than that, this is an A+ expansion. There's always 20-30 people looking for a game online.

Extremely user UNfriendly game

I really enjoyed the first of this series but I must say that the online platform is ruining this game entirely for me. After a long install, tha game refuses to start unless you download a huge file, patch, create an account on their platform and wait for access to a server.

But the worst part comes next: when you launch the game the second time - it offers you to replay the first game of the series but asks that you re-buy the game ?!? And customer support is nowhere to be found.

Until the publisher refocuses on providing entertainment rather than forcing buyers into its additional web services, stay away from this.

Great Game with Technical Issues

Very FUN game when i can play longer than 5 minutes without crashing...see below...As soon as the game loaded a very large patch is required, now i think their is an additional patch which i also downloaded. It is very large and takes time even with highspeed cable. Once i had everything installed and patched my problems started. I had been playing Company of heroes and had not had any problems in single player and online multiplayer.

I had purchased a dell xps 700 with dual sli Nvidia 7900 last December and it ran great playing COH, however, my system would crash to desktop constantly playing COH:OF. I downloaded all the patches and the problem persisted. I came across a hardware problem on my XPS and Dell sent me out a NEW XPS710 two weeks ago....It came with with the ATI CrossFire X1950XT. Again i loaded both COH and COH:OF.

My new system still crashes but now i lose my gameplay and cannot pull up the game from the desktop which forces me to reload the entire game and pull up the save games if i remembered to save..if not im starting over again. This mornings after trying for two weeks to enjoy the game but having to start over time after time I uninstalled COH:OF and reinstalled COH and loaded all the patches to 1.7V. I have not had one Crash to desktop and am playing on highest resolution of 2560x1600. The COH game runs great not one single issue...all my problems started when i loaded the Opposing Fronts and associated patches. I would have thought it might have been the ATI card but i was having the same problem with Both ATI and Nvidia cards. So this leads me to think its the COH Opposing Fronts especially since my reload of COH has not had a crash and IMO its the game and not my system...

I will wait and see if other patches are available in the comming months before i try and reinstall COH:OF as i really enjoy the online gameplay. Oh my system has an Intell Quad Core, 4gig ram, dual CrossFire X1950XT so is a very capable machine to run COH and COH:OF

About the game its Great and i really enjoy the Panzer Elite and British factions added to the gameplay. I was able to finish both campaigns through constant saving and even managed an online 4v4 game. The two campaigns are very fun and some are very tough. I really enjoyed the skirmish mode and being able to fight with a combination of American, British, Panzer Elite and Wermacht and it makes for some great gameplay.

I do expect relic to add additional factions like they did in Warhamer 4000 which has 7 factions, so maybe they will add the Russians and Italians sometime in the future. Overall its a great game so take a chance and try the game maybe you will not have the crashing problems some of us have experienced. Im sure relic is on top of this and will come out with a patch to help fix the problems.

couldnt even get running

I also played the first COH.
After the long install, it tried to patch.
patch failed over and over. no help in forums, although
many many others had the problem. relic should
have made an easy to find patch process available.
terrible quality control here.

I done with this game. wasted too much time on debug.
very disappointed.

Amazing

This is a great expansion for an amazing game. First of all, if you don't have the original Company of Heroes, I recommend getting that first. It has a solid campaign mode and a brilliant multiplayer online mode.

The reason the original game was so great is that, in addition to innovating and introducing new RTS mechanics, everything just felt right. For starters, gone is mining ore and chopping wood for resources. In Company of Heroes, you gain munitions and fuel by seizing critical points around the map. This makes the game far more dynamic. Other cool features, such as the way infantry can take cover behind walls, how machine gunners can take up position in buildings, how flamethrower infantry units can burn down a building, etc...all combine to make this one heck of a game. When you see tanks battling it out with infantry, as paratroopers fly in from above, you'll know this game is great.

Opposing Fronts adds 2 new factions to the multiplayer, and they are tailored more to people who have played the original game. The original armies are more traditional -- they have sniper units, machine gun units, and a wide variety of light and heavy vehicles. The new armies are more specialized. Neither the British nor the Panzer Elite have many infantry units. Instead, the British rely on officers to lead their troops and the Panzer Elite rely on vehicles.

The balance is good. Originally I thought the Panzer Elite were too powerful, but the armor of their starting vehicles is quite vulnerable to Allied sticky bombs and Rangers. The British can also construct static AT emplacements to counter many of the Panzer Elite's initial forces. I think the only matchup that needs some tweaking is the British vs. the Panzer elite (all others seem well balanced to me). In my opinion the British PIAT anti-tank ability needs to pack a little more punch so that the British can ward off Panzer Elite rushes.

Overall, a great expansion to easily one of the best RTS games ever made.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

For those that are still thinking this is the same game from last year, think again.

For starters, there is a considerable amount of strategy that one has to put into playing this game.

Some may call it a slower pace, I like the pace because it gives you time to build and plan your attacks instead of swarming which some people tend to do.

Whereas the Americans in the first CoH seem like they won battles by overwhelming brute force, the Brits have to be wiley. This is why I like the Mobile HQ and also being able to lay down emplacements to grant covering fire.

I ike the fact that there are far more ways to upgrade soldiers and your engineers don't seem like they are going to waste.

Graphics wise, it's about the same which is good because I still always enjoyed the variety of the maps and the deforming from all the damage.

If you enjoyed the last one, then you should ahve fun with this.

Hands down, I love this series.

Please fix the bugs!

I purchased CoH and loved it, and as far as I remember, it was fairly stable. Now with Opposing Fronts, as soon as load a map, it crashes, and freezes my computer. This is a known DX10 issue that even with the latest update from Relic, has not been properly addressed. It happens to users with both NVIDIA and ATI cards from the last generation (7XXX for Nvidia cards)- if you go read the relic forums, it's a common issue.

Until they fix this bug, I can't play the game, much less give it more than 1 star. However, for the few brief moments that I was able to play, I like the new British units. I'm a fan of defense and turtling up, so the new British fixed emplacements (howitzers, Bofors guns, Mortars, 17 pndr AT-gun) are an interesting new addition.

***************UPDATE*************************
After the most recent game and Nvidia updates, the game is finally rock solid! THIS is the product that they should've released, rather than the buggy version. The campaign missions can be played without crashing, HOWEVER, the skirmish maps crash repeatedly. Which stinks in terms of keeping the game around for replay-ability...

I could actually finish all the campaigns without a single glitch. The graphics and physics are incredible, the new units are a hoot to play with. Like I mentioned above, I'm a big fan of the British. The 17 pndr and 25 pndr AT-guns and howitzers respectively deal out more damage than the American 105s, and the Priest can rain destructive power down on any part of the battlefield. The Panzer Elite doesn't feel as different from the regular Wehrmacht as the British do from their American counterparts. Panzer Elite plays like a stronger armored force, and that's about it.

If only they had fixed their bugs earlier, I would've given them a much higher rating!
