Crashed and burned. Horrible tech support.

I bought this game after having really enjoyed the first CoH. It was a truly innovation on strategy games, no more silly minerals to mine! The first CoH had some minor technical issues but the company worked them out and got the game running just fine. So I decided to give CoH Opposing Fronts a try.

It was a total waste of time and money.

My machine was a month old top-of-the-line souped up laptop. 4 GB of RAM, dual core centrino, 512 MB of video. One would think that so much power would be enough to run a simple WWII game, right? Wrong!

I couldn't get the game to run, so after I jumped some hoops, downloaded about 700 MB of patches and followed complicated install-uninstall-reinstall sequences I got the game to finally run. Now I'm a senior software engineer and even I got frustrated by this, I can't even imagine what it would be like for the ocassional non-technical user.

The cinematic sequences ran truly slow and sometimes crashed the whole game, so I just pressed ESC when one of those popped up to avoid these crashes. Playing the German Campaign was OK, but sometimes it got really frustrating because I couldn't get my units moving in time to save the barracks or whatever because the game engine ran too slow!

Then the game just stopped working at all in the middle of the British Campaign. No matter what I tried, and I spent hours debugging the problem, the game would not advance, so I decided to contact Tech Support.

The guys at Tech Support demanded some files from the DirectX diagnostics tool, the game's log file and other information about my operating system. I guess they were trying to discourage me from further contact because their demands were extremelly hard for the non-technical user (ie. opening the game's debug console mid game) but since I had no problem getting this information so I sent it right away. Then they asked me for a few days while they looked into the issues.

A whole week passed and no response, so I decided to email them to see what was happening. To my surprise they didn't do anything with all the information I provided. So I asked again if they could look into it.

A few days later another tech support guy, an outsourced foreign guy I could barely understand, told me that my laptop wasn't on the supported list. Well of couse my laptop model wasn't on the list because it was a NEWER 2008 model! Then this dude just said "the game requirements were printed on the box previous to your purchase, sorry, no luck, no refund, bye bye"

I was truly polite, understanding, and helping right until the point they told me to stick it. But even after I escalated the issue, I got no response from them.

Lesson learned. I gave them some money, and they gave me a buggy game. No tech support whatsoever. I haven't bought anything from THQ since. There were some games I was interested for my PlayStation 3 but I didn't buy them because they were from THQ. They've lost about $680 right there! That $29.99 refund would make sense now wouldn't it?

After reading the reviews about the crashes and the instability I didn't have any problems at all just 10 minutes of updates and it was fine, it did exit but that was my anti virus the causing problems i have a 8800GT (nvidia) and the visuals and effects were AUSOME!!! no problems that would make me stop playing except being bad at the game all I know is that I didn't have the problems that were described so I'm happy.

Excellent game -- could be better if it wasnt rushed out the door

While not as great as the first, It could have been.

The theme of CoH is still alive and well, and the ability to play all four factions at this point is awesome.

cons-
Buggy game, constantly changing balance/rules.

Overall, still a must have if you like RTS games.

Company of Heros: Opposing Fronts

This game is actually an expansion to the original game, but it almost seemed like a stand alone game in itself. It's a very good add-on to the original and continued on with the theme. If you liked the original you'll definitely like this one.

Great New Sides Without Straying From the Original

I've played CoH:OF for a little while now and absolutely love it. The new sides add enough differences from the original game without deviating from the old formula to make this an excellent addition to the original. Let me say that again, it's an excellent addition to the original. If you don't have the original, get it first. I don't recommend it as a standalone because I don't know that the depth offered here is enough for anybody to play just this game alone. Gameplay is fun and certainly challenging. The AI is good and will always aim for your weaknesses, try and flank you, etc. Graphics are great, and the controls intuitive. If you're a fan of RTS, this, coupled with the original are must owns.

I just finished a two hour long session vs. two different enemies and had no problems whatsoever. The British side is a lot of fun to play. I haven't tried the new German sides. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because they still won't let you play allies vs. allies or axis vs. axis. It's a nitpick, but something I'd wanted.

Yes, there are a couple of bugs still crashing the games here and there but that is the exception no the rule. This game plays well 98% of the time; at least on my end. I can't stop playing it. Buy this one and the original; you won't regret it. The atmospheric effects are worth every penny not to mention the new units and maps. CoH and CoH : Opposing Fronts are the best strategy games I have played so far. You won't be able to put them down.

I liked the first Company of Hero's so this one is great and it even has a campaign for the German side and a bonus unlock-able campaign

The new battels are great lots of fun I play this game alot got tried of battlefield 2. On line play is fun too, If you have the first you'll like this one.

It is truly an exciting game. However, the forces are kind of unbalanced, with King Tigers and Jagdpanther dominate the whole field of armor and the British trench digging are render useless by mortar halftracks and motorcycles that just wander around capturing and cutting out your forces. It seems to me as if some of the doctrines doesn't even have the effect Relic intend to produce (or I am bad at the game...) The music is barely okay, and the campaigns get super repetitive after a while and especially after you earned all the metals. Online and local skirmish are the only elements that are the elements I like and have high replay values. The units are also detailed if your computer's graphics allows it to be. My PC is weak and sometimes experiences a few lagging experience. However if your computer is good then you are good to go. Take notes, the patching up is annoying. I spend two-three hours fixing almost nothing expect to play online (which I rarely do).
