Great game - but CRASHTASTIC

Company of Heroes was one of our favorite RTS's to play, definitely the best RTS to date. Very stable, very fun. Opposing Fronts, the follow on, is a good game, but was released too early without adequate testing.

Even after the latest patches, my buddy, brother and I experience a lot of bad system crashes while playing. Relic's support continually blame this on drivers, but we're all running the very latest. It's the game, Relic.

If you've got a multi-core system, avoid this game like the plague for another four months, until they work the kinks out.

*** UPDATE 15 Mar 08 ***

We've tried playing a few times over the past four months, hoping Relic would release a patch that would let us play for more than 10 minutes without a crash.

My buddy, on a dual booting Mac Pro, continually complains of crashes that would mess with the video ram of his ATI card, forcing him to go through 4-6 reboots before the graphics card would work properly again. (yes, this is with the latest drivers from ATI). Last night it bit my Nvidia card for the first time, and totally corrupted my VRAM, requiring the graphics card to be replaced.

I can't say if this is a problem with Apple's Windows drivers, or a general problem with Relic's coding (it's got issues with Vista on Windows boxes as well). However, no other game I have has EVERY caused a problem like this, or crashes like this.

If you're using a dual booting Mac, do NOT get this game. It's fun, but the repairs are expensive.

great fun for 10 minutes then crash

Brand new Del XPS 720, latest non-beta Nvidia drivers. Games is great, graphics spectacular (especially heat shimmer and lightening at night) but CONSTANT crashes. I got through the first few scenarios but the latest one I've done 6 times and crashed everyone. The last time I was so close to finishing.

And they wonder why people are going more and more to consoles. Very frustrating, doesn't seem to be anyway to fix it as I've tried everything. Computer is less than a week old.

Can't recommend the game in this state for Vista users. So much for "games for windows."

EDIT: finished the scenario tonight, no crashes. Also remembered to save every few minutes. Next scenario didn't crash at all. I would promote it to 3 stars overall.

This is Great...

Today the 2.102 patch came out...

Folks,

I have read threads where they say this game is so much slower than the original, boring, etc...I have found this to be the opposite from *my* truth...I am seeing FRAPS in the upper 60's, whereas they were low 50's from vanilla COH. The game's graphics appear slightly better, but that may be my imagination. They have reverb sound now, which is so cool...I love the British artillery sounds.

The interface is easier to use. For instance, I now know what the potential radii of effect my mortar placement is going to be. Same with all of the arty. The map also lights up as to the range where you can fire too, and so now I can pinpoint where the enemy is (red squares), click over there quickly, and then drop the arty on them. THANK YOU Relic for making arty placement soooo much easier.

I am so happy I bought the expansion. The game runs smoother, much easier arty use, fun factions to play, love the new reverb/audio...Nicely done.

I know people are comparing OF to the original Company of Heroes, but having nd it keeps getting better. played this for months I can safely say it is simply awesome. It has a few bugs, but those are gradually being phased out in the patches rolling in..

Typical windows Product. GARBAGE! The first game was great, this one takes a VERY long time to install, then has a long update(even over cable internet)THEN wants you to create an account online. Since the game is not smart enough to look for multiple dvd/cd drives, it will eject you back to the desktop if the CD isn't in the drive that the game happens to be looking at.

Great Game

The stand-alone expansion to Company of Heroes brings 2 new factions into play. Both of the factions are fun, but if you haven't played the original Company of Heroes then you should probably pick that one up first. The new factions can be hard to get the hang of if you haven't had any experience.

Otherwise if you have played the original game then Opposing Fronts' new factions will be fun. The British are just about capturing and getting a firm hold on territory. This is perfect if you are a defensive person. The Panzer Elite however can take territory quickly due to having fast vehicles, and cutting off the Allied supply lines. They hold the best infantry in the game, and are also the most versatile. The only problem that I have with Opposing Fronts' is how it could have stayed in development for a few more months or weeks. Some things could have been finely tuned, and there are a few balance issues. The FG42 upgrade for fallshrimjagers is clearly overpowered and, some other panzer elite units are overpowered if used correctly. There are few technical difficulties in the game, some random crashing. Relic Online also has its moments, where it would sometimes crash, or just go offline. Some of these moments are maintenance, while others are just random crashing. I marked off one star off because of the crashes in the game, and Relic Online.

2.301 Patch: The game is now much more balanced. Relic Online is more stable and best of all, there is team automatching.

A nightmare to get up and running.
Straight after installation the first thing it does is want to download a 140Mb patch, which fails to complete after several attempts.
I downloaded the pathc seperately, extracted it, and so far I have been unable to get the patch to install.
i.e. I haven't yet played this DX10 game on my DX10 card.

Absolute fiasco!!

If you purchase this game you will be sorry.

This has to be the worst install and update system I have ever seen in a game. The patches dont come in one patch but several large incremental patches that you must suffer through and restart the game for each. Even after installing the patches the game tends to lock up and bog down. I am running a 3.4Hz system with high end Nvida graphics card.

This game I feel was a total waist of $39. It also forced me to patch my working COH original and it too has become unstable.

Awesome Gameplay bad multiplayer

I honestly enjoy the actual game itself, but the multiplayer is unbearable. The sides are very diverse and use completely different strategies from another. The new campaigns from what I've played seem pretty fun, and the quality is no less than the original. The sounds kinda threw me off though. I really liked that old explosion and they changed it plus the sound seems lower even with the volume at max. Overall I have to say that the game is lots of fun and definitely worth a buy if multiplayer is not a huge concern.
