ruined multiplayer

Relic, Relic, Relic.... why did you go and thoroughly ruin a multiplayer experience that needed to be fixed in the first place? The updated graphics look nice, but have made multiplayer 4v4 games so laggy that the games are unplayable now. When will progammers learn that it's about the overall experience and not just the graphics? I've got a pretty good system too (C2D, NVidia 7800GT) but since multiplayer is p2p, it's dependent on everyone's systems.. and most can't handle the new expansion.

Amazing

This is a great expansion for an amazing game. First of all, if you don't have the original Company of Heroes, I recommend getting that first. It has a solid campaign mode and a brilliant multiplayer online mode.

The reason the original game was so great is that, in addition to innovating and introducing new RTS mechanics, everything just felt right. For starters, gone is mining ore and chopping wood for resources. In Company of Heroes, you gain munitions and fuel by seizing critical points around the map. This makes the game far more dynamic. Other cool features, such as the way infantry can take cover behind walls, how machine gunners can take up position in buildings, how flamethrower infantry units can burn down a building, etc...all combine to make this one heck of a game. When you see tanks battling it out with infantry, as paratroopers fly in from above, you'll know this game is great.

Opposing Fronts adds 2 new factions to the multiplayer, and they are tailored more to people who have played the original game. The original armies are more traditional -- they have sniper units, machine gun units, and a wide variety of light and heavy vehicles. The new armies are more specialized. Neither the British nor the Panzer Elite have many infantry units. Instead, the British rely on officers to lead their troops and the Panzer Elite rely on vehicles.

The balance is good. Originally I thought the Panzer Elite were too powerful, but the armor of their starting vehicles is quite vulnerable to Allied sticky bombs and Rangers. The British can also construct static AT emplacements to counter many of the Panzer Elite's initial forces. I think the only matchup that needs some tweaking is the British vs. the Panzer elite (all others seem well balanced to me). In my opinion the British PIAT anti-tank ability needs to pack a little more punch so that the British can ward off Panzer Elite rushes.

Overall, a great expansion to easily one of the best RTS games ever made.

Huge number of technical problems

Unfortunately it appears to be badly bugged for many people. Problems include inability to play online as game freezes on login in screen. Some people are unable to even play offline without physically disconnecting their computer from the internet as the game tries to log you in online to verify your software. This problem occurs even for those who have their DVD in their drive.

Should be a good game if they figure the bugs out.

Awesome Gameplay bad multiplayer

I honestly enjoy the actual game itself, but the multiplayer is unbearable. The sides are very diverse and use completely different strategies from another. The new campaigns from what I've played seem pretty fun, and the quality is no less than the original. The sounds kinda threw me off though. I really liked that old explosion and they changed it plus the sound seems lower even with the volume at max. Overall I have to say that the game is lots of fun and definitely worth a buy if multiplayer is not a huge concern.

Not as good as the original.

Company Of Heroes: Opposing Fronts I've only played this for a few hours but I liked the original a lot more than this one. This seems slower and not as interesting. The new version also uninstalls the original so I can't go back and play it without uninstalling the new version?? What's up with that?

I hope that I'll get into it more as I play it more but so far it is a substantial disappointment.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

For those that are still thinking this is the same game from last year, think again.

For starters, there is a considerable amount of strategy that one has to put into playing this game.

Some may call it a slower pace, I like the pace because it gives you time to build and plan your attacks instead of swarming which some people tend to do.

Whereas the Americans in the first CoH seem like they won battles by overwhelming brute force, the Brits have to be wiley. This is why I like the Mobile HQ and also being able to lay down emplacements to grant covering fire.

I ike the fact that there are far more ways to upgrade soldiers and your engineers don't seem like they are going to waste.

Graphics wise, it's about the same which is good because I still always enjoyed the variety of the maps and the deforming from all the damage.

If you enjoyed the last one, then you should ahve fun with this.

Hands down, I love this series.

Not an average RTS

OK, let me start by saying that I have read certain reviews about diversion among different units in this game being bad. This is the whole reason I love this game. In almost every other RTS game each player has the same goals, build up certain units and grab the choke points on the map. In COH not every strategy works so you are constantly looking for ways to counter your opponents.
There are not many flaws in the game play; however multiplayer does require all players to have a good setup on their computer, as with all games. I don't have a duel core or a high end video card on my laptop (I travel a lot), but I can run the game on high settings with 2 gigs of RAM and Windows Vista. If you do experience lag in game play I recommend adjusting the sound settings, this can help out in some situations.

Great multiplayer and single player

OK, here's my updated review, now that I've played the game a bit more.

The campaign mode is compelling -- personally I think it's about as interesting as the original. I didn't get sucked into it; the cut scenes seem a little shoddier, and the German accents were bizarre; and the objectives were a little less fresh this time around. Still good.

Multiplayer is amazing, with some flaws that a patch should iron out. Playing as the new British or Panzer armies is a COMPLETELY different experience from the original American or German armies. You don't get snipers or heavy machine guns anymore for either the Panzer Elite or the British. Here's how it breaks down:

Panzer elite: You've only got a choice of four buildings total, and they crank out some pretty cool units. You've got a mobile mortar vehicle that can shoot fire balls to destroy buildings and groups of infantry. You've got halftracks that can transport infantry across the map (a new feature). The command tree options (special abilities) of the faction, however, are the really cool part. You can disable strategic resources once you've captured them, which makes it EXTREMELY important for allied players to watch their ground. Otherwise, a panzer army can take allied points and then destroy them, so that they can never be reused by the enemy! The Germans also have some amazingly durable tanks and can construct heavy flak weaponry.
Cons: RANGERS are overpowered. This allied special unit simply devastates the panzer elite armor, at all levels, and desperately needs to be weakened in a patch. Also, look out for sticky bombs!

The British: yikes. Mobility is the key here. The British buildings are simply 3 trucks that you should place around the map on different strategic points. The upside is that you get more resources from points you place your buildings/trucks next to. The downside is that your trucks will be vulnerable since they will be so spread out.
The British can construct cool fortifications, like a trench that shields infantry extremely well, and a bunkered mortar that basically needs to be hit by either grenades, flamethrowers or a tank to be beaten. Officers are also really important so that you can build more buildings and improve troop effectiveness.
Cons: This is a hard side to play. Your fortifications are easy to destroy or even to use against you (the trench especially) and your AT capability is TERRIBLE. You do get some cool special abilities, though, like the ability to "intercept axis transmissions" by setting up a triangular radio network. Basically, your infantry can place transmitters at 3 points, and from then on you can see everything your opponent does within that area! It's tough to use, but effective if you pull it off -- much like the res of the British arsenal.

Conclusion -- fix Rangers. Make them weaker. Other than that, this is an A+ expansion. There's always 20-30 people looking for a game online.

New Armies Add Twist

The new additions to the game really add a big twist to the story line and change the multiplayer tactics all together. Also supports other players styles and habbits. I'd still recommend new players get the original so they can play the traditional armies as well, since they are easier to learn and control.

A BLAND SEQUEL TO A GREAT GAME

Innovation, like intelligence, cannot be bought; or forced; or spread on a slice of bread. It is a fleeing ability that needs time and space to grow and bear fruit. Nowadays, there are no such conditions in the gaming industry. Hence, games like CoH: OPPOSING FRONTS. The cookie-cutter at work.

Whether one likes or not strategic-points RTS games (what are now called "WarGames") is a matter of preference (I do not, they reduce the immersion factor, as they remind me too much that I am playing a computer game). This is not the main problem with CoH:OF. After all, the original CoH was also a strategic-points game and it was a GREAT game!

RELIC, a company with a long RTS history, attempted to improve on the original. Running a game-mill produced mixed results.

PROS:
- Improved graphics and sounds
- Enemy AI. They will come after your dug-in troops from every possible angle.
- Did I mention the graphics? Yes, they have improved...

CONS:
- Slower gameplay (from unit production to movement - it can really get on your nerves when under pressure)
- Smaller maps (although strategically more diverse)
- Single Player practically...abandoned to fare for itself. Not very thought out and pretty predictable.
- Your own units AI: they will keep getting mowed down if caught exposed when moving - although there will be tons of buildings around. Nearby units do not come helping: if an enemy unit is outside its own detection range, they will not lift a finger. Now, I do realize this is the part the...player is supposed to fill; however, friendly units assisting in enemy detection would be much more realistic (even for a WWII game). Either C&C-TIBERIUM WARS spoiled us too much or RELIC relies too heavily on the pause-to-issue-orders game style.

Overall: if you liked the original CoH, I am sure you will like this one too. If new to the genre, start with the original CoH though.
