One of the best games I've ever played!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 3

I purchased my XBox 360 specifically to play Fable 2. However, the release date for Fable 2 has been pushed back again until next year. In the meantime, I purchased Assassin's Creed to keep me occupied until the release of Fable 2. The previews looked good for AC and I was excited to try it out. As it turns out, Assassin's Creed is one of the best games I've ever played!
I'll start with the graphics and sound:
Graphics are amazing. The opening scene shows as a tyrant is assassinated while executing peasants and then the ensuing getaway. This scene looks very cinematic and beautiful, which is how the game looks through about 95% of the actual gameplay as well. The settings and characters look terrific and I wasn't even playing on a HD set. There are a couple of minor visual flawes, but on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd rate this game a 9 for it's overall graphics.
Sound is great. The score really fits the settings and sound effects are right on. I really like the subtle audio cues when you are at a view point or some other place of interest. Most of the character's accents were well done and almost any questionable character performance can be explained away easily by the game's sub-plot. It's the way the Animus interprets things. I won't explain this further because I don't want to give anything away for anyone who hasn't played yet.
Interface; The interface is well done. It is not overly complex, nor is it a button masher. There are two sets of controls. One set is for passive actions and one set is for aggressive actions. This allows for playing as a stealthy assassin or as an in-your-face, warrior type of assassin who kills in a very public manner. After going through the initial tutorials, it is very easy to have complete control over your assassin. You can also learn valuable tips during load scenes. With a little practice, combo-kills can make you a beautiful bringer of death to those who stand in your way!
My one problem with the interface was with choosing a weapon during combat. For some reason, whenever you are cornered and draw a weapon, the system seems to default to the long sword. I prefer to fight with the short blade, but switching to this blade during combat can be a bit tricky and you sometimes end up empty handed or back to the long sword. Another annoying thing about using the short bade in multi-combat is that it is the same button that you use to select throwing knives. So, sometimes when your opponent takes a step back you end up wasting throwing knives on him as the system automatically selects throwing knives at a certain distance.
One last, minor annoyance with the combat system is that when you knock an opponnt down, the system will sometimes switch targets and turn your attention to a different opponent rather than finishing off the opponent you have knocked down. This doesn't happen too often and can be easily accomodated once you get used to it.
Combat is fun and easy once you get the hang of it. I also reccommend trying some horseback combat during your travels from Masayaf to another city when you encounter formations of soldiers. The horse will knock soldiers over and you can slice them down with your long sword. If you are knocked from your mount, try to get soldiers positioned behind your horse and he will kick at them. The controls for riding are easy to learn and only get annoying when you are trying to ride through crowds of peasants who are too stupid to clear a path for you.
Gameplay; I've become totally addicted to this game and haven't slept for days. At one point in the game, it mentions something about people becoming so involved that they begin to combine element of the game with reality...(that's exactly what happens. lol) AC has taken some hits for being repetitive, but I don't find this to be a problem for me. Sure, there are certain things that must be done for each mission, but they vary enough that it doesn't feel repetitive to me. In fact, I find it hard to decide which element of the game I like best; Investigating the target, assassinating him, evading the sodiers or just plain fighting. The only truly annoying element of the game were the beggars and nutters that get in your way. But even they add to the game by making some tasks more challenging.

The pros - Beautiful sound and graphics. A unique (yet somewhat predictable) storyline. Believeabe characters and settings. An open and interactive environment. An interesting sub-plot with a litle bit of a secondary game integrated into the story. Fun in every aspect of the game. Amazing game overall with replay value derived from the pure fun factor. A rich and uniqe concept, the way the entire game is designed and presented to the player is amazing.

The Cons - Some repetitive dialogue from NPCs. Somewhat predictable plot points. A little difficulty in choosing weapons quickly during combat. Occasionally ends up with a bad camera angle during combo-kills, with view obstructed by part of a structure or tree. Cut-scenes can be annoying at times; especially after saving a citizen when you want to get out of the area quickly.

Overall reccommendation - This game is a must have! It is nearly perfect and is left open for a sequel (which I would buy in a heartbeat). It looks like everything I expected from a "next-gen" game and more.

Awesome experience. Must play for any serious gamer.

I was immediately turned off by this game when I saw the visual "glitches" in the early gameplay trailers. I never imagined that Ubisoft would be able to explain it as well as they did. This game has a great story, unique gameplay and a unique setting. The graphics are some of the best ever seen in a videogame. You actually feel like you are an assassin in the Holy Land in 1100 AD. While I can see how some people might find elements repetitive, I think it is due to the way they approached the game. There are literally dozens of ways to complete each assassination mission. You can choose to complete it however you see fit. Are you pissed off because you had trouble completing a side mission? Go in with your sword out and massacre the entire army of guards in one gigantic fight. Want to play out as a true assassin? Slowly take out the guards above and work your way silently around your target assassinating ground guards along the way. In a hurry? Approach your target without rousing the guards, take him out and run out of there.

I've played over 70 Xbox 360 games and I would rank this as the third best game on the system. I feel so strongly about this game that this is the first review I've posted on Amazon.

I thought the game was to easy and it ended up getting boring after playing for a 1 week. It was fun at first but the moves are just all the same. I was expecting more...

Amazing!!!

From the opening sequence to a bit into the game I must say that this game is breathtaking! There are so many things to learn in this game and it really keeps it interesting!

My favorite thing to do so far is climb the buildings and jump into the haystacks. You can pickpockets, eavesdrop, and be an Assassin!

I know this is a short review but honestly this game is great! With all of the must-have games this year (Mario, Metroid, Halo 3, Bioshock, COD4, the future Mass Effect, Rock Band, GTH3, and this one) this is one of the best holiday seasons for gamers of all time! Assassin's Creed is easily one of the best games of the year...A must have!!!

UbiSoft took a chance. They redid the stealth action game. Assassin's Creed combines Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia to create one of the most amazing action games I have ever played. Most of the technology in this game is top-notch. As a rock climber myself, the climbing in this game hits a sweet spot for me. It's pretty impressive how realistically they implemented it. It's definitely one of the best parts of this game.

The combat has been criticized as being an endless string of counters. Well you can make it that way if you want -- waiting around to counter -- or you can make it interesting and actually go after guys. Either way, I find it to be fun, original combat system that adds greatly to the game.

Another new feature that is very Prince of Persia-esque is the "free-run" system. Basically, Altair can run over any obstacle. It's so fluid and easy to do that the issue isn't a matter of control. It's a matter of which way are you going to go, and how hard do you want it to be to get there. It's very fun.

Assassin's Creed replaces "stealth" with "blend". You hide in the open within the crowd rather than sneaking around in the shadows. It's fun and realistic, and quite impressive.

The story is interesting, but will certainly have it's share of critics.

The enemy AI so far is a mixed bag. Sometimes they're smart, other times they're complete idiots.

No doubt the next version of this game will be absolutely amazing.

Single Player Gaming At Its Best!

After about 3 hours with the game, I feel like I can give you guys a pretty good review about everything ive seen and done in the game so far. You really have no clue what you are getting yourself into when you pop this game in. First off, the game does start a little slow/strangely like some other reviews have pointed out. The start is pretty scripted but it does a good job at teaching you how to play. After you play through about the first 30 minutes the game sort of gets into a pseudo groove and you start to play at your own pace. The controls to this game take some getting used to but they do work well after you get the hang of it. Im going to try not to comment on the story much in the review; you really need to experience it without knowing anything before hand.

The graphics are amazing. The cities are huge and very well detailed. Every environment has great detail. The smallest things around you are animated and act true to what they would in real life. Early in the game you get to ride a horse. The horse animation is the best ive ever seen in a video game. Overall, it is a visual treat.

The game play is very well done. Once you figure out what you are doing, you can really get into what's going on around you in the game. You can basically go anywhere you want. I love climbing the buildings and running around on top of them. They did a nice job with the movement in the game. Animations are smooth and you can easily get into the realism they are going for.

Some other reviews comment on the way the game makes you do similar things over and over again. While it is true that you do have to do things several times, I haven't found it to be a bad thing. When you are scouting around for your kills you will have to interrogate and do other actions for information. This would be true in real life. While you have new targets, you do need to collect some of the same information before you can carry out the kill. Like I said before, I haven't found this to be a bad thing.

Lastly, this game does do some things ive never seen in any game before and ive been playing games for over 15 years now. I would go as far as saying it is groundbreaking in many ways. If you are looking for a new, innovative, addictive, well done game, Assassin's Creed will fit the bill. It is single player gaming at its best!

This game is a must have for next gen gamers...

This game is by far one of the best thought out and exciting gaming experiences I've ever had. There is a small twist at the beginning but don't worry it's awesome (kudos to the game team keeping it on the low down). The graphic are incredible and it flows very smoothly. I've experienced absolutely no glitches or hiccups. But the main thing is the story detail and the writing. I've not seen a game this good since Indigo Prophecy (Old game but great story). The combat is really all about timing and NOT button mashing. and story really makes you think. All of these other people don't know what they are talking about!!! This Game FREAKING ROCKS. Can't wait for the next one.

Assassin's Creed--Funnest Game Ever, with a Few Disappointments...

Assassin's Creed is an amazing game. I am terribly impressed with the fighting system, the overall scale of the cities, and the number of NPCs. The game does have quite a few shortcomings, in my opinion, however.

First off, AI is not great. It shows some interesting programmed responses, but the people are clearly doing nothing but walking or standing. As expansive as the game is, I still feel limited. I cannot go inside buildings, barriers are still clearly existent--which is inevitable in a video game--and water is inaccessible. The sidequests are repetitive to no end; as much as I love the gameplay, saving one civilian is the same as the next fifty, and pickpocketing and eavesdropping are nothing special either. The game feels as though it needs more variety in gameplay

As much as I may seem to be bashing the game, I only complain because I have held this game above any other in my mind for the past two years. I am satisfied, but I feel the game could have been much more, could have been far improved upon what it is. Assassin's Creed is an amazing, revolutionary game, and on a scale from 1-to-10, I would give it an 8/10. Freerunning is endlessly fun! =)

This is a refreshingly fun game with tons of adrenaline pumping moments. It seems like half of the NPCs will attack you on sight sending you on one death defying adventure after the other. At first, I missed the ability to really set up a nice quiet little assassination but by the end I was craving the free for alls that result from your mere presence. This game took me on one wild ride and the final conflict had everything plus the kitchen sink.
