For my money, the folks who found this game a bit on the dull and repetitive side have the right of it. The game *looks* fantastic - the cities and buildings, the movement of the horse while riding, the look of the main character . . . all these things are impressive. But who wants to have to ride around looking at a game versus playing it? Plus, if you're riding through the countryside and guards begin chasing you (which happens a lot) you end up running away and missing the scenery anyway.
Not being able to skip the cut scenes was aggravating.
After saving a few citizens and "blending" to evade guards more than a few times, I got bored pretty quickly. Did not find the game particularly intuitive, mostly because the gameplay isn't that deep: there are really only a handful of things the character has to do in this game, and he has to do the a LOT.
After looking forward to playing this I've been more than a little disappointed.

Repetitive, boring, circular.
The horse controls much better than the horses in Oblivion.
Overall, however, the control scheme is annoying and somewhat counter intuitive.
The story is ridiculous.
Character design and level designs are gorgeous, however.
This is the most overrated game of '07. Save your money.
do not believe the hype.

if you were to play assassin's creed for only an hour or two, you might believe it to be the outstanding piece of brilliance that people have made it out to be. the graphics are phenomenal, the world design is spectacular; it really feels like you're moving through a living, breathing city, and free-running through it is amazingly fun.
for a while.
play a bit longer, however, and you will see how reptitive, limited, and undamentally flawed the game is.
every cutscene in the game is unskippable, and for a game with such a weak story, the characters talk A LOT.
missions vary from quite literally *sitting on a bench and listening to people talk* to *chasing down flags that have been scattered throughout the map* to *walking slowly behind someone while holding the B button.* there's a remarkable lack of assassination going on here.
the enemy AI is laughable. murder a guard directly in front of another, and that guard will stare at the body, yelling 'who did this?!' enter an area where you shouldn't be and be spotted by a guard, and the guard will just point his bow at you menacingly until you throw a dagger into his face.
the game is frustratingly, mind-numbingly repetitive. there is no escalation of plot or gameplay. this claims to be a stealth game, yet the end devolves into a series of absurd hand-to-hand fights. and the ending is such a blatant non-conclusive call for a sequel, it's detestable.
there is potential to this game. the world is well realized, the controls are slick; there's a good game in here SOMEWHERE. but ubisoft missed the mark this time. hopefully they'll learn from their errors to produce a fine sequel, though considering the accolades being heaped on this flawed, overhyped game, they may not think they need to.
Wonderful Fun!

I've been waiting for this game since I saw an add online about 6 months ago. It was said to be the first truly next-gen experience, but a day before its release, IGN's review made it out to be "not worth while." Guess what. They were oh so wrong. Amazing graphics, smooth movements, interesting story, insane free running/climbing, and great controls/combat. Some of the most fun I've had on my 360. Definitely a game to pick up for anyone who enjoys good old fashioned single player gaming. (Don't worry, the sequel will have online play!)
Great graphics, irritating gameplay - worst next-gen title I've played

First off: I was very disappointed in the complete lack of immersion of AC. From the box I thought I was buying a game set in the 1100's. But no, the ridiculous concept is "genetic time travel" regarding a kidnapped bartender, so expect little digital garbles, a virtual reality theme and instead of health points, the "synchronization meter", instead of simply loading a save you are loading a memory, etc., etc. In other words: there is absolutely no sense of immersion. And never mind the worst opening of a game in gaming history. I seriously got a headache and had to stop looking at the tv - in general the fuzzy, digital trippy stuff was hard to deal with.
The story isn't worth talking about but worse, there is no real gameplay (as far as I'm concerned). You may push a button here or there, but I honestly made it through most of the tutorials without much looking at the screen and just mashing whatever button they asked me to. You can climb even the hardest of walls/buildings with little effort. There are quests where you just have to climb up the same type of tower over and over. It wasn't fun the first time but you have to do it a dozen times over. At least you don't have to climb back down - you jump into a bail of hay. Wow, games have come a long way, eh?
Combat wasn't any more fun. The fact its a stealth game simply drags any action on longer than need be. The assassinations were irritating and guess what: that's the game. I decided I'd try skipping the assassinations and the climbing quests since it wasn't any fun - well, there's little else to do in the game. That's it.
And now for The Worst Idea in a Game. Ever: The "gentle push" button. Yes, there's a button used just to gently push people out of the way. Yeah, its as exciting as it sounds. If the "gentle pushing" gets too heart-pounding of an experience there's always the "blend" button that has your character hold his head down. That's almost as exciting as gently pushing people out of the way and several steps more exciting than say, reorganizing your sock drawer or filing your fingernails. I found holding the green xbox button for several seconds ended up being more desirable. The "shut-down console" option solves many of AC's problems.
Also get used to looooooooooong scenes where the character you're puppeteering just stands there in clouds, doing nothing. Seriously. Just wait and something trippy will happen until the next dream/memory/whatever loads.
I can't imagine what the developers of this game were thinking. I'd be wary to ever get another Ubisoft game - maybe its just the Montreal group.
I put it up for sale the day after I bought it. Other than the graphics I can't say a single good thing about it. Want a stealth game? This isn't the one. So 1 star seems generous but its the lowest you can choose.

I beat this game in like 10 hours. Not including the brutally two hour long tutorial. Your first mission is cool, but when you realize you only got like 8 more and they are just like it, it's a huge letdown. This whole game was a huge letdown. Side missions are the same, and boring. And the big plot twist is obvious from the opening scene. So I turned around and sold it to make my most of my money back, instead of waiting to spend more money when they release downloads. Don't buy this game, it's a waste of money. Rent it, cause it can be fun, but you can beat over the weekend and return it.

More Anti-Religious Garbage

It was fun for the first few missions. There are several problems with this game. First, it is not truly a freedom of movement game like Oblivion or Grand Theft Auto. The story really follows linear missions and deviating from them really isn't any fun. Second, there are odd cuts in the graphics that are both intentional and unintentional. Movement on horse looks incorrect, some jumps are obviously missed, but the game moves your character so you make the jump, and some fight scenes (such as when countering a grab) have an odd cut very much in the flavor of Dirk the Daring in the old Dragon's Lair game.
The fourth problem is the most obvious and the one I have the most issue with. The story line become very anti-religious quickly. Regardless of the warning at the beginning of the game that it was created by a cross-religious team of experts, I believe the game follows an athiestic evangelistic path.
I was very dissatisfied with the gameplay, but the added storyline agenda just made me angry with my purchase.

Assassin's Creed delivers!
From the moment you first put in AC, you will be sucked in. Forget what you've heard at IGN, the reviewer must have been paid off :D
Really, assassin's creed is amazing. The storyline draws you in from the very beginning, nothing seems out of place. Even the tutorial for how to play the game is crafted neatly into the story. Your "life" display is explained as your synchronization to your memory. You do not "reload" your game, you re synch up with your past memory. Fans of POP will identify this with when the prince would die, he would say "oh wait, thats not how it happened"
The gameplay is wonderful. The controls are definitely difficult at first, i often found myself accidentally pushing over civilians or jumping of walls to my death. However, you soon pick them up and will be scaling Cathedrals and performing leaps of faith in no time. Assassin's is definitely worth the dough, you'll be hooked from your first kill. :D
Spectacular, maybe the best third-party game of the year

Calling Assassin's Creed eagerly anticipated is saying it lightly. In what may be the best holiday season for video games ever, Assassin's Creed may very well be the best third-party, multi-platform game to come out all year, as it delivers on every level and then some. From the minute you plunge into the huge, absolutely gorgeous world of the major cities of the 12th Century Holy Land, you will be immersed in the story progression of the game, as well as the overall presentation of this long in-development project. Assassin's Creed puts you in the shoes of Altair, a master assassin who has more than one trick up his sleeve. His graceful moves are what makes Assassin's Creed so good to start with, as you run, jump, and take out targets. Altair's stealth moves are performed surprisingly easy thanks to the incredibly fluid controls, which shine even more in the heat of combat. Presentation wise though, is where Assassin's Creed will receive the most accolades. The three towns that take up the game; Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus, are brilliantly realized. Everything from the townspeople to the brilliant sound designs and effects will get your attention, but it's the little things that really make Assassin's Creed special. Little touches in terms of character movement and behavior as well as environmental effects are what also help make Assassin's Creed a real winner, as well as the brilliant music score to boot. If there's any drawbacks to Assassin's Creed, there are occasional graphical glitches, but nothing that super noticible. The game's ending may cause some confusion as well, and leaves the door open for an inevitable sequel, but if there ever was a game that deserved a sequel, Assassin's Creed definitely does. All in all, Assassin's Creed is a spectacular game that lives up to it's hype, and saying it's an essential pick up is saying it ever so lightly.
