After a few days of playing I finally beat the game (gimme a break, I got a job). After the credits start to roll (and boy do they take their time on that one) and after I messed around a little bit in the lab room, I put the controller down and thought to myself, "Wow...I really really want to keep playing." Very few games have made me feel like that in the 20+ years I've been gaming.
When I first popped the disc in, I was expecting a fun game, but with a lot of faults. Mainly collision errors when trying to find spots to climb up buildings or trying to jump from building to building, but not doing it correctly and just falling. Surprisingly, this didnt happen once for me. Watching Altair (that's you), run into a building and seamlessly running up the wall a few steps and then grabbing either the top of it, or a loose brick, or a nook, or just about anything, and then pull himself up is just amazing looking. Then when I saw something that jutted out a little bit overhead of me, I immediately thought, dang, I'm gonna have to move to the left or...wait a sec...NOPE, he's actually removing himself from the wall a little bit and jumping or pulling himself out and over it. Very nice. Then when I got to climb my first 'high point' in a city, and hit the 'Y' button to investigate the area, my mouth actually dropped open and I said to myself, "Wow, I can actually go anywhere in here?!" Even my World of Warcraft addicted roommate removed himself from his computer to watch me play this game for a few hours.
The story itself, at first was pretty boring for me. Or maybe it was just cause I didnt care about it cause I just wanted to go go go and keep playing. After awhile I started listening in on the story, and it proved pretty interesting, ESPECIALLY closer to the end.
The controls are very very easy. You've got the nonchalant mode where mostly what you do is look inconspicuous by pressing 'A' to look like you are a scholar and praying, or pressing 'B' and gently shoving people out of your way and so on. Then you got our attack mode where you can run 'RT', or attack 'X', sprint 'A'. It's really very simple. Which can be a bad thing and a good thing. Good thing is that it makes it very simple and everything flows very nicely..like the graphics. Bad thing is, well, it's simple. Some people like to be able to hit button combinations to create spectacular moves or really just have their own kind of freedom on how to attack. I'm usually in the latter here, but this time I liked the simpleness. It made it a lot of fun without having to be to frustrating, especially when I would bust up a soldier party (<--future rap title I bet!), kill a couple, and then haul butt to another party, and then another, and then have to kill about 40-50 guys at once. Talk about feeling like a bad ASSassin! Wow..bad pun...whatever.
The missions are fairly simple...and pretty repetitive after awhile. You show up to town, head to your little headquarters, find out what's going on, climb some towers, find more stuff going on, then go pick pocket, eavesdrop, save some people, beat some info out of people, and then go assassinate the 'boss'. That's how it goes. Now dont get me wrong though, it sounds a little tedious, but for some reason it was not at all for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Ok I lied, I didnt enjoy the eavesdropping and the pick pocketing. You stand or sit there, listen to the convo, and then leave or you have to pickpocket a guy and then leave. That was pretty boring after the 2nd time of doing it. But everything else was fun to me.
Once the ending happened, like many people, I was left a little confused. I checked online and found a lot of info that made me go 'Ahhh..ok'. Plus I found out that this was the beginning of a trilogy. Yummy Yummy! I can not wait for the next installments and go a treasure huntin..YAAAR!
One thing that REALLY irritates me about the game is you can not hit a button to skip through the story. Now if the makers want me to sit through it, then that's fine, but make me do it only once. If I've made those credits roll, give me the option to skip through the dialog the next time I play through. Cause some of these scenes can get pretty long winded. I made a bowl of spaghetti-o's during one scene.. =\
Whatever you do, you must play this game at least once. It's a sight to behold for sure. Especially if you got a 1080p/i set up.
PLEASE RENT, DON'T WASTE 50 BUCKS LIKE ME!

Assassin's Creed is a beautiful game that has many things going for it. The graphics, fluidity of motion and vastness of the in-game world are some of those things. I really have to hand it to Ubisoft's PR people for hyping this game up so much. They really had me thinking that this game would require me to use my brain and plan in order to reach my targets like in the Hitman video game series. The way I figured it would be like would be that I would gather info about the target, stalk it, and then use one of many different ways of killing him just like hitman. I could have just hacked and slashed, blown him up somehow or poisoned his food by bribing the castle cook with a rare item. No. In this game you just pretty much walk up to the targets and cut them up in front of all their dumbass guards that just stand around and if they slash at you it doesn't hurt you much. The information gathering part is the worst part. The game consists of you going after your targets in one of three cities and climbing large towers in order to find people that can help you. Apparently the main character, Altair, has the magical ability to spot EXACTLY the right person to help you get info even if theyre mere specks from the vantage point that youre at. C'mon now.... this is 2007 and these are the next generations of consoles. Was this the best way they could have thought of gathering info? It's repetitive as hell because of this and other reasons too. Many of the people in cities repeat the same lines. Another disappointment was in the AI although maybe I was expecting too much. I really thought you'd have to use your head. I figured that if I lived in a midievil city, I wouldn't be able to walk up to an armed guard, put my hands all over him, shoving him or whipping out my sword in front of him. In order for guards to get pissed and chase you, you have to run into them hard, fall on em' or start killin' people. Pretty wack. Overall, the game had it's moments for example being chased on rooftops by guards was fun as hell. I give it the low rating because I paid for a game that is way too easy and I beat in a week after having paid fifty dollars for it. No replay value whatsoever folks. If you're gonna check it out, PLEASE rent it first, and if you don't beat it and actually like it, THEN buy it.
From a picky gamer - excellent gameplay but watch for younger kids

While I have an Xbox 360, I don't use it much. I bounce back and forth between the Xbox and my PC for games and wait for top notch games for an experience rather than to burn time, which I don't have. Assassin's Creed it a top notch game. There's an excellent premise and story to it like a decent book. The gameplay itself is smooth and fun, from climbing towers to scout areas to the actual fighting and assassinations themselves. The game, environment, characters, and music come together to create a rich and beautiful experience. It was well worth my time.
BUT watch this game for younger kids. The game has some very nice and engaging moral dilemmas around if who has been killed is actually "a bad person." I felt the conflict which is great gameplay for adults but it's something that can get in kids' heads. Also, it's violent like running up on the top of a building and then jumping on an unsuspecting guard, who you really don't know if he's good or bad, and plunging your hidden sleeve knife in his throat. I'm usually not one to care but since this game draws you in so much, I can see how it would have stayed with me if I was younger in gradeschool, for example.

When it started it was all great. More you play the game.. more it starts to show its ugly skin. Latter part of the game is totally buggy and broken. It is easy to forgive the bugs, as it looks awesome.
Just that the gameplay department is empty. I think they spent all their money on Art and Graphics and forgot to wrap it around with a game. After all it is called Video Game.. not a 'Interactive Video'. Where is the game ????
Fun, but slight problems

I bought the game, after lots of hype and expectation the day after it came out. I started playing it right away, and the tutorial, was.... well, it was really boring. Action picked up a little bit later on, and the beauty of the crowd dynamics began to show. The chases, the kills, the crowd, all that is quite interesting, but... there were some drawbacks. Firstly, the repetition. After saving several citizens (who look identical), then doing it 9 times over, you get a bit bored. Luckily they're optional, but it's still really repetitive. The plot also seems a bit weak, as the genetic memory belief is a bit farfetched...
All that aside, the scenery is refreshingly beautiful, and the dynamics are great... I recommend this game simply due to it's unique, gorgeous gameplay, and looking beyond the drawbacks, I'd say it's worth most of the hype.
Repetitive quests mar an otherwise brilliant game

When I first started playing Assassin's Creed, I was really impressed with the graphics. The developers really put a ton of effort into making realistic environments. For example, the level of sunlight lighting the world constantly changes, simulating what we see in real life as clouds pass in front of the sun. The motion of the main character as he moves is incredibly well done, from a slow walk to stopping in his tracks to sprint in another direction, to climbing complex vertical walls and buildings.
Unfortunately, the gameplay is what ended up making me lose interest in the game. While the game had my complete and utter attention as the story unfolded, I became a bit tired of flag-collecting and pick-pocketing. The interesting, unfolding plot is challenged by repetitive and eventually predictable sub-quests. If the developers could add more kinds of sub-games, and perhaps wait to reveal them until later in the game, then I think Assassin's Creed would truly capture my interest through the whole game. There were also times where I kept falling off ledges or jumping off cliffs when I thought I was doing the right thing, but I chalk that up to my own inexperience.
All in all, I think this game is a breakthrough in the control it gives you over your character, but the game needs to explore more ways to turn this into a wider variety of quests. I'll buy the sequel to this game on the good chance the developers are already exploring this very thing.
Good game, but better to rent

This is a good, fun game. It is revolutionare but it seems the designers ran out of ideas early. Once you beat it there is no real point to playing again. Better to rent then buy but it is a must play.

I will keep this short, this game is excellent! The graphics are the best I have seen to date, and the user interface is intuitive and simple to get used to. There is a bit of exploration/strategy employed which may be seen as slowing the game play a bit, but I actually appreciate it.
The game is rated for mature, but even so I find it disturbing at times. Some of the cinematic scenes are a bit graphic and the scenes disturbing. I think this was done to increase your desire to assassinate the individual. Maybe that's not a good thing?
Overall this game is well worth the investment.

Although there was a lot of repetition in this game, it is beautifully rendered and still very entertaining. While some gamers may be turned off by a game that doesn't constantly offer action, I enjoy following story lines and playing games out like a virtual and interactive book or movie. So while there are some slow spots in the game, I think it all evens out in the end, because the last half hour or so of the game is pretty intense.
