Interesting...but not fun.

I will preface this by letting you know I am of the casual gamer variety and like games I can pick up and just have some fun with. I also only played this for a relatively short period of time before giving it to a friend.

I am not a huge fan of the fantasy/medieval type genres. I urge the reader to take this into account as this certainly could be a fantastic game for the more serious gaming community or those fascinated by some "old world" history.

I found the storyline ridiculous to the point of it being a pain to endure. It actually gave me severe stomach cramps. I found the graphics in the initial videos very annoying, and far from chic or modern or revolutionary. I found the character movement slow and quite honestly boring. I found the pre-set missions very limiting and the gaming world particularly slow to navigate.

I fully acknowledge my negative reactions are largely due to my game preferences (free-world environments/action/fighting/real life simulations) and this just isn't a good fit for me. I did however think that because of the rave reviews and tremendous hype, that this should be a "must have" for any Xbox 360 owner. It isn't.

Highly Underrated

This may be the most misunderstood and underrated game of 2007. I was weary purchasing it because of the mostly negative reviews from game critics. GameSpot and XPlay were in the minority giving Assassin's Creed a high rating. Their reviews usually align with my tastes and I thankfully listened. When I look at a game like Zelda Twilight princess for the Wii (which shares attributes to AC) where IGN gives that 10 year-old outdated design a 9.5, and then gives this game a 7.7; I have to wonder what they are smoking. AC is hands down one of the single greatest achievements in video game history. I could not stop playing this game from the second it hit the disk tray and XBOX live updated the software. Assassin's Creed can be summed up like this: An adult version of Sly Cooper 2 & 3 with the visceral feel of Ninja Gaiden. All of this while attaining the greatest graphical fidelity and beauty in video game console history. Here are the categories:

Graphics -I have yet to see better graphics on the XBOX 360. Having played Mass Effect, COD4, and BioShock, I can still say this with confidence. The world is huge and the graphical detail is mind-blowing throughout the macro to micro stratification. A few hours into the game when you pull up on your horse overlooking the ancient city of Damascus, your jaw just drops. There is no draw-in distance that I can see usually present in massive world adventure games. I did not witness the visual glitches others have mentioned. It could be that the software update fixed those, but there may also be a misunderstanding of said glitches. Without giving away too much, I believe it is pretty well known that you are playing in a virtual world. It turns out that visual "glitches" were programmed in to give the player a cue to switch camera perspectives during cut scenes. You can control a limited camera during cut scenes very similar to what Metal Gear Solid 3 utilized, for those familiar.

Sound -Environmental sound and the implementation of surround sound is blockbuster action movie quality, as is the voice-acting and musical score. The quality is on par with BioShock and God of War 1 & 2 for PS2, which had stellar audio attributes.

Gameplay - Wow, refreshing. Though the implementation of the gamepad is tricky at first, once you learn the controls, they are butter. Combat is simple yet innovative. Words cannot describe the exhilaration you will feel the first time taking a running leap to plunge your hidden dagger into the neck of a roof guard and watch that animation unfold. It's Ninja Gaiden-visceral for those of you played that epic title. When jumping and climbing on the roof tops of these incredibly well designed cities, it felt like Sly Cooper 2 & 3 for those of you who are familiar the designs of the cities in those great titles.

Story - Good concept. It won't win any Academy awards, but everything else in this game is so superb, you really cannot fault the premise of the story.

Summary -Stop any further hesitation and buy this game now! You will enjoy an epic experience on par with the greatest games ever made.

Quite an Experiance to take

Solid game. Still has flaws however.

Graphics: Just beautiful, nothing compares to this game when you see these graphics both characters, architecture and landscape. The game also has realistic lighting, where I really felt the heat scorch the buildings and light up the characters while i was moving around. This is how video games should be visually, as this game felt very alive.

Gameplay: Repetitive.Simply put once you play this game, you will be doing the same thing over and over.Hope yer ready. pick pocketing, interrogation, saving citizens, assasination, synchronizing are part of the game and are done over and over throughout the levels.

Plot: Very bizzare plot as you are a man who supposedly was a bartender and is now working for a secret enterprise contained in a lab where you are drilled day by day to sit down on a machine called "animus;" to uncover the truth behind the crusades and the faith amongst the religious cities. This game is to be continued.

Cons: There isnt too much interactivity amongst the towns people and yourself as the player. Walking through crowds I expect more talking, smoke in the air from foods, more wildlife. These are things that ubisoft failed to do as you feel somewhat alone as no one says anything directly toward you unless there your leader or the person you assinated. When you smash a shop the vender doesnt punish you, when you climb a guarded building, the guards dont punish you...whats going on?? There needs to be more variety in gameplay, to many a times you find yourself doing the same thing over and over, and it does get boring :(. There are two stories going on, one in reality and one in the "animus" world, which is hard to follow both at a time.

conclusion: Overall the visuals are what shocked me as they are just stunning, i would rent the game just to wander around looking at all the landscape which really brings out the HD in the xbox 360. This is mainly why it got the 4 stars was the spectacular graphics followed by the fun times climbing buildings. This game does get boring when you start doing the same missions over and over so you may want to set it down for awhile and then come back to it.

check it out/ rent it.

I got this for my son for Christmas instead of Call of Duty 4 because I thought I read that it had some biblical standing to it and he did like it just not as much as Call of duty 4 which he ended up borrowing from a friend who got it for Christmas, lol.

good but no cigar

Beautiful, but overhyped and boring

Anyone in their right mind can see the Assassins Creed, is one of the most graphically flawless, XBOX360 titles to date. Complete with a beautiful sound score as well, but ultimately very overhyped and boring.
Climbing, jumping, sneaking and stabbing. It just gets SO dam repetitive and painfully boring after awhile. Xplay, actually said this first publicly, before anyone did and they were right.
Personally I have officially lost interest as of last night. I could no longer bear the idea of having to revisit the same cities at the same snails pace.
Each mission sends you back to areas already combed and with little to no change in gameplay. I had two more missions to go before some mysterious secret was to be revealed.
sadly, I just put down my controller and said "I don't care anymore". This sucks now. Many people love this game, however if you read their reviews most are based simply on appearance alone. I was hesitant to play The "Orange Box" title when it came out because I hate overhyped crap.
I was never so wrong with a game as with that one.
What a masterpeice! Feeling like I learned my lesson, I figured I could very well be wrong in assuming Assassins Creed, would be the same lesson taught. Nope. So far, if Xplay says it's one way or the other, I'll be inclined to pay more attention in the future.

Great Game ... Terrible Ending

(SPOILER ALERT) My review is based upon what happens at the end of the game.

I really liked playing Assassin's Creed. The action was great. I loved the fact that it required me to do things like climb towers to open up more of my option in a town.

That being said, the end was so bad that it completely overshadowed the rest of the game. I'm trapped in the lab and the Templars got everything they needed from me? That just plain sucks. It made me feel like I lost. I actually looked up a walk-through because I thought I screwed up and missed something. Nope that's the way the game ends. I was hoping that I'd get to use all those assassin skills to escape from the lab, rescue my family, and defeat the Templars. Oh well.

Starts off great, gets tired.

This game starts off really great, but after you've committed the first big assassination it gets stale quickly. It wasn't long before I had the feeling of "been there, done that." Granted, the foes become more numerous and stronger, but you are still doing the same things as you did before: climbing towers, eavesdropping on people, picking pockets, and dealing with guards who don't like you and want to kill you.

Be aware that you can't play this game with kids in the room. It's rated M for a reason. I'm long jaded by video game violence, but that and the F-bombs that are dropped in this game make it unsuitable for children.

Evaluating the game from the start to the end of the first assassination, I'd rate this game a five (5) star game. From there though, it drops to a three (3) due to its repetetiveness. Making it all the way to the end of Memory Block Seven (7) can tax your patience.

Great First impressions, but quickly fades.

This game starts off very fun. The graphics are great, as are the game controls (once you get used to them), and the open world interaction. You can go mostly anywhere you want in the games and climb on anything as long as it has a place to grab on.

Then comes the actual storyline (or lack there of) and missions. At first these things seem fine, but you will soon realize that you are performing the few missions over and over (one of which is sitting on a bench) to progress a weak story that you don't really care about.

I initially had fun playing this games because of the controls and graphics. As those things wore off I quickly became bored because of the lack of content in the story and missions. I would still recommend trying the game for yourself, but you should save yourself potential big disappointment and rent the game before you buy it.

Do Not Buy From This Company

I have to say, waiting for over one week and paying what I'd pay in a store up the road is ridiculous, we were quoted this game only being $54.99 and we have been charged $64.85. When we called amazon they directed us to Taget, then we got some random email directing us BACK TO AMAZON. SAVE YOURSELF THE GRIEF, go to the local game stop and get your video games. I have my step kids coming in two days, and this game was supose to be a late christmas gift to him in two days, well, I'm not getting this game until January 9th after he leaves, AND IT WAS SHIPPED DECEMBER 27th. Once again, do yourself a favor, buy from somewhere else.
